Cyclones are subject to frequentblockage caused by material de-posits which occur in the timberindustry and mills, especially in thechipboard industry. These lead toabrupt discharges of material onthe clean air side. Special sensorsare installed in the tapered sectionof the cyclone to detect this mate-rial build-up at an early stage andthus avoid operational interruptionsand prevent emissions of harmfulsubstances.
Monitoring is based on the light barrier principle, with a VMX 3001 S infrared transmitterand a VMX 3001 E receiver fittedopposite each other.
Air-jet adaptors are provided toprevent the detector window frombecoming dirty.
The complete detector constructionand ball mounting are designed forheavy-duty industrial applications.
Cyclones with a diameter of up to 3 m can be monitored with stan-dard detectors. Ball-mounted jointsenable exact alignment of thetransmitter and receiver.
Standard detectors can be used for cyclone surface temperatures of up to 70 °C.
The signal “Cyclone blocked“ is displayed visually and acousticallyon the fire control panel. Floatingcontacts are provided for retrans-mission and any desired localalarming and/or shutdown. Ananalysis time range of 1/10/35 s canbe set in the receiver to suppressany brief interference variablesthat may occur.
Continuous monitoring of the cyclone for blockages. No undetected material build-up,due to monitoring with the VMX 3001 and shutdown of sub-sequent machines. Mounting adapter for easy installation and maintenance.Fast maintenance device.Detector LED integrated in thehousing enables rapid checking of the detectors operational readiness. Both devices can be connected to an existing spark extinguishingcontrol panel or Minimax fire control panel. Only a free sparkdetector group is required.Easy Detector alignment is facilitated by ball-joint mountings.

Technical data
Differences between MDF and dustFibres are, in terms of the bulk weight, much lighterthan dust and chips. The materials have almost thesame colour and the same relative humidity of 8 % to12 %. These materials are water repellent, due to theirdry condition. The sum of these properties must betaken into consideration in the case of a blockage.
VMX 3001 S (transmitter)The VMX 3001-S is operated with an emergency DC power supply of 24 V. It is a freewheeling infraredgenerator operating in light impulse mode. The com-ponents are designed as single-hole detectors in themechanical sense.
VMX 3001 E (receiver)The VMX 3001-E is operated with quiescent currentmonitored 9 V DC (line voltage). It is an infrared receiver that generates an alarm current on the 9 V line after a set delay period if it fails to receive the triggering infrared light impulses.
Cyclones are used in the timber industry for separatingprocess and conveying air resulting from wood products(e.g. chips, dust and fibres). Separation is based on cen-trifugal force, with the wood products rotating againstthe inside wall of the cyclone and downwards to therotary valve. This principle is also employed for hotcyclones, which separate hot air from wood productsafter a drying section. This downwards rotation oftenleads to material blockages above the rotary valve.
Cyclone anti-blockage protection functionThe present protection concept shall identify a blockagethat has already occurred and stop the further feed ofmaterial. Material deactivation is always associated witha delay period, as deactivation means a shutdown ofthe plant.
It is not possible to identify bridging during its earlyformation phase.
