New Zealand’s premier equestrian event 2018Showgrounds Hawke’s Bay Tomoana will open its gates for the twentieth time to Horse of the Year this month.

Thanks for this can be given to a dedicated group of local volunteers and horse enthusiasts who lobbied hard for the chance to host the event. In 1998 Horse of the Year (HOY) was brought to Hawke’s Bay and 20 years later passionate men and women have continued to work tirelessly to ensure that New Zealand’s largest premier equestrian event remains here.

The showgrounds are set to turn into a hive of activity over six days from 13 March with over 1500 riders and 1800 horses competing in 15 different equestrian disciplines. From show jumping to dressage, eventing to mounted games, HOY is the pinnacle of the sporting season for these athletes. Champions will be crowned in front of more than 50,000 spectators who walk through the gates. Pony clubs from Northland to Invercargill will also attend with teams competing in the official Pony Club Team of the Year competition, marking HOY as a show for all levels of riders.

There’s something for everyone with over 200 shopping sites, unique hospitality events and plenty of thrills. Look out for ‘Market Place’ where local produce from Hawke’s Bay will be exhibited. The Continental Event Hire Premier Lounge hospitality area will include the fashion and food focused Cup Day on the Sunday of the show, as well as the crowd favourite Cross Country Brunch on Saturday. The Hastings Heart of Hawke’s Bay Friday Night Extravaganza returns with a twist on previous years and some exciting new performances following the prestigious Silver Fern Stakes with a not to be missed Australia versus New Zealand test match.

The February announcement of Land Rover as principal sponsor of the show will take the event to new heights through many international relationships and it’s certainly exciting to think what the future holds for this fantastic Hawke’s Bay event.

Australia and New Zealand will face off in the first senior Trans-Tasman Jumping Challenge for many years at the 2018 Land Rover Horse of the Year.

At the end of 2017 the invitation was sent for Australia to send a team for an unofficial senior test match and four riders were selected to represent their country in NZ.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting a much anticipated test match against Australia at the 2018 Horse of the Year,” ESNZ Jumping Chair Richard Sunderland says. “The four visiting riders are sure to add to the competition and we’re looking forward to showing them New Zealand’s premier equestrian event.”

The youngest of the team is also the only female – at just 20 years old, Brooke Langbecker is on a mission to represent Australia at the highest level of the sport. She rides the impressive chestnut stallion Quintago I and the pair are ready to make their mark as part of an Australian team.

Fellow team member Clint Beresford is no stranger to HOY, having competed at the show in 2016 with his horse Emmaville Jitterbug. The combination won the 1.40m the first day of the show and was oh-so-close to a major placing in the Olympic Cup, finishing fourth. He’ll be aiming to improve on his last time at HOY and is sure to have a win in his sights.

Langbecker and Beresford are joined by fellow Aussies Stuart Jenkins and Hayden James riding Fairview Aliquidam and James Continue respectively. These two will set a high standard with plenty of experience in Australia’s big league as they come off their own impressive seasons.

Equestrian Sport New Zealand will be selecting a Kiwi contingent two weeks before the event after the new Takapoto Classic show in Cambridge. The hometown opposition will be exceptional with a strong line-up of riders vying to represent their country.
