My Reflections

While completing my internship at Miami Dade College Single Stop Wolfson Campus I given

several duties. My duties consist of several different task as I state below:

Classroom presentations that consist of going into classrooms and do a marketing pitch

about Single Stop Services.

Create, plan and put on an event. Which I gave the task to my volunteers and I

supervised the event.

Solicit, schedule, evaluate, train and supervise about 53 volunteers.

Prepare monthly reports about their volunteer hours, events, classroom presentation and

outsourcing in the community.

Keep track of my hours and do my weekly schedule.

Assist students with direct services such as Food Stamp application, Financial Aide

forms, helping those finding shelters if homeless, etc...

The biggest work issue I encountered was scheduling the volunteer hours and managing all other

task I need to complete. The way I handle this challenge I trained then delegated the task to a

volunteer then I just monitor him to make sure it was being done.

During my internship I had a chance to network with Dr. Jaime Anzalotta, Dean of Student I got

a chance to work with him while planning the Breast Cancer Awareness Event. Dean Anzalotta

called me to his office to go over the event because he was made aware of it then showed me the

correct procedures to follow when planning any future events. Afterward Dean Anzalotta

applauded me on what a great job I was doing at Single Stop. Another person I had a pleasure to

network with was Wayne E. Rawlins Reentry Coordinator (Contractor) from the Violence

Reduction Partnerships thru the United States Attorney’s Office Southern District of Florida. I

worked with Mr. Rawlins on the Reentry seminars for prisoners coming back in to society. My

task was to inform them on what Miami Dade College Single Stop services that we offered if

they began or return to college. I also worked with him and the local police department with a

One Stop Walk program where we went door to door in poverty areas letting the community

know of all the services available to them.

The only conflict I encounter was creating an event and the correct channels to go about putting

on an event. To handle getting an idea for an event, I delegated that duty to my volunteers and

they came up with the complete plan for a Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser Event. However

the biggest challenge was learning the correct procedures after finding out at the last minute that

the dean need to approve something he wasn’t aware of he showed me the correct procedures to

handle event of this type and still allowed me to put it on.

To describe my team experience all I can say that I had the most awesome team which include

my Coordinator Mercy and all my volunteers. Mercy gave me the lead with them but was there

to assist at any time I needed her. My volunteers just work with me as a team and any task I

gave them they completed plus always gave me bad or positive feedback which help correct

some area such as I should delegate duties and just supervised them to make sure it was done.

My future plans for the next year is to continue my education to a Master Degree in Non-profit

Management at FIU or St. Thomas University. Career goals would be to continue to work for

now with Single Stop so that I can gain more experience in the non-profit industry.

Bio-sketch

My career passion is either get a position or be on the of a non-profit organization that help

families in poverty stricken areas or that help college students stay in school so that they could

graduate on time not 31years later like I did. My short- term goal in the next two years is to have

completed my Master’s Degree and long-term goal in five years is to have started my own non-

profit for young people at risk of going to jail and also being able to have in place services for

their families.
