Art is beauty!

The world of art, filled with dreams of nuances, is a source of magic, goals, hopes, colors, illusions; Maria E, as her friends affectionately call her, is the artist name she uses to sign her printings.

Those dreams took her through the crossings of life, forging her art little by little, with much sacrifice and work as is the case for most of the artists who have to carve out their own destiny.

The History of this artist was marked by an ideal world; since her teenage yeamy workrs, her passion for the beautiful forms of life attracted her; literature was the opening door to the world of magic; it set her onto the path she desired: painting. Eldest of 6 brothers, in a family of limited economical recourses, she always resisted from falling into the doom of utter poverty; she decided that studies were her only way to fight it and survive it.

She was born in Cali - Valle, Colombia, in 1966. It is not until the age 14 that she realized life had beautiful dimensions to it, which had to be immortalized through their plastic representation; even though she felt that way, never had she any idea that she would become the painter she wanted to be. She only started her art classes at the age of 28 in the workshops of the Institute Popular de culture. Her first art teacher is the person who discovered in her the gift of painting and encouraged her to study the art in a formal way. This was the boost she needed to undertake in arts career and pursue until the end.

After her studies in Cali (Colombia), She moved to Panama City to follow through with her higher studies in the INSTITUTO SUPERIOR DE BELLAS ARTES ROBERTO LEWIS, a

school of plastic arts where she had the opportunity to surround herself with the Panamanian artists among whom she received the best instruction, worked tirelessly, looking for ways to do a work that would be important for her and for the art work viewers. Her work and her quest led to the experiment with various techniques and materials, even recycled objects, all object being important for the experimentation and final development.

For Maria E the research of the theme that is going to take form is important; that’s why reading is an important part of her steps towards achievement. In books, she finds the answers to the meaning of symbolism, mysticism, eroticism, sensuality, love, which represent an emotional need to create. The legends that exist in different civilizations also arouse her curiosity; that is how she developed a keen interest in the legend of indigenous Australians, a theme that will grow to be paramount in her plastic evolution; the WANDJINAS «passengers in transit » paintings are inspired by a legend of rock art in Australia. According to the Aboriginal people, they didn’t paint such figures but rather special beings that existed in ancient times. These beings with special features brought prosperity to the region where they lived, with white faces and no mouth, large figures of six meters, their heads in a semicircular, horseshoe shape with thin lines that seem to radiate towards the outer circle.

In her paintings that translate energy, she uses the technique of action painting combined with shape in order to achieve freedom and emotion, to free energy and to transmit it to the viewer. Forms are flat and oblong and points and lines are used to adorn the spheres.

It was not until 2011 that she found a theme and a style she was satisfied with and with which she would identify. That triggered the creation of canvas, drawings, sketches and pre-sketches of wandjinas in the hundreds, inspired by 90% of work and 10% of successes and events of daily life and art itself that could be seen as a movement or a pictorial school. it fits perfectly abstract expressionism, with wild, shimmering, vibrant and flaming colors, used fearlessly and giving birth to deformed, oblong exaggerated characters, as are, in a more specific way, spheres in different dimensions.

Maria E is a pacifist, an artist, who doesn’t find any reason to feed hatred and violence among human beings and who rejects outright any kind of war that is brewing in the whole world, and she uses her painting as a refuge in face of adversity.
