Message from the Principal

NAPLAN NAPLAN testing has been taking place this week for our Year 3 and Year 5 students from 14-17th May. There is one test each day – Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy. We try and administer these tests in a way that reduces the perceived pressure and stress of the testing environment. Whilst they give us some useful information about our students, they are only one test on one day of the year. Our teachers are completing ongoing assessments of students all the time which paint a far more complete picture. Parents of any students in Year 3 or 5, please don’t hesitate to ask any questions of your child’s teacher or myself if you need to. Cross-Country success On Friday, Mr Marquand will be taking 8 of our students to Ballarat to compete in the regional Cross-Country event. It is absolutely wonderful that so many of our students have qualified to push and test themselves at this next level. We wish them all the best and hope they achieve their personal best on the day. Open Morning & Grandparents’ afternoon Next week, on Tuesday 21st May, we will be hosting an open morning for any families interested in finding out more about who we are and what we do here at Myrniong Primary School. If you know of any new families who might be considering where to send their children in 2020, please get them to give Karen or I a call to discuss their attendance at this open morning. There will be a brief information session and tour from 9-9:45 and 10-10:45. On Friday 24th May, as part of Education Week, we are inviting grandparents into the school and classrooms to share in the education of their grandchildren. There will be some delicious cupcakes for sale in the canteen. This will run from approximately 1:30pm. Student Attitudes to School Survey On Monday 27th May, we will be administering the student Attitudes to School Survey. This is completed every year with Year 4, 5 and 6 students across the state. It is a short online survey that takes approximately 30 minutes where students are asked to rate our school across a number of measures and domains. These are completely anonymous, and provide us with very rich data from our students about their experience at Myrniong Primary School. Have a lovely week. HEAD LICE

The lovely little creatures have shown themselves again. Please check your child’s hair and treat them should you find eggs or lice. Once your child has been treated than can come back to school.

LOST PROPERTY Please take a moment to go through the Lost Property Basket before Friday as there is quite a lot of jumpers in there. Many jumpers are brought from the second hand shop. Can you please find a way to mark them so as they can be identified. At the end of the month we will be cleaning it out, washing them up and putting them back into the Second Hand Uniform Shop for Sale. PIE WARMERS We are still having issues with large containers being sent to school in the Junior area. Containers any larger than 4.5cm don’t fit in the pie warmer therefore we having to microwave each container that is higher than this which is quite time consuming. Can you please ensure that containers are no more than 4.5cm in height. School Walkathon / Colour Run This Friday, the Junior School Council is holding the Walkathon / Colour Run. It will be held between 2:30pm and 3:30pm. It promises to be a fantastic fun-filled afternoon. Chil-dren are encouraged to wear very bright colours and a white t-shirt for the day. Thankyou to those students and families who have already been fund-raising. Please continue to do your best, because all funds raised are used by the J.S.C. on ventures that assist the student community. Due to the fantastic fund raising efforts of the school community so far, the students have been rewarded with an opportunity to waterbomb the teaching staff at the end of the day's festivities. They are very much looking forward to this. We all look forward to seeing as many members of the school community this Friday afternoon.

If more than $5000 is raised the students will be able to throw water bombs at the teaching staff. This will happen at the end of the Walkathon.!!!! So get fundraising !!!

GARDENING HELP

If any parent has a few spare hours here and there, our school gardens need a bit of

love and care. Please see Mr Garner or Mr Crilly.

JAPANESE DAY This year Japanese Day will be held on Wednesday 5th of June! Remember to dress up in a costume that celebrates the Japanese culture! You could come as a ninja, geisha, Pokemon character, samurai or even the colours if the Japanese flag (red and white). Students will be able to explore Japanese craft, cul-ture, fashion, food, sport and hobbies with a range of fun activities on the day! ~ Ashi Sensei

Head lice and nits, are you scratching your itchy head yet? Head lice are always around and it important to continue to check and treat these true survivors of evolution. They have survived for millions of years. It must be really challenging to concentrate in class when your scalp is itchy and all you want to do it scratch. Head lice are small, wingless insects that live, breed and feed on the human scalp. Direct contact is required for transmission from person to person. Lice will crawl from head to head without discrimination.

Each female louse (singular of lice) can lay up to 8-10 eggs (nits) a day about 1.5 cm away from the scalp where they stay warm until they hatch. A female head louse can lay up to 300 eggs during her 30 day life span… Lice can’t jump but rather crawl from head to head. I remember the first time I caught them as a graduate nurse at the Royal Children’s Hospital. I was always feeding and nursing children and one of my patient’s shared their ‘livestock’ with me. I called my Mum and her advice was ‘don’t come home’. Here is some more helpful advice from the Better Health Channel… Concentrate on treating the affected person’s head. There is no evidence to suggest that you need to clean the house or the classroom.

The only linen that requires changing is the affected person’s pillowcase. Wash it in hot water or dry it in a clothes dryer set to warm or hot. The easiest and most effective way to find head lice is to use the conditioner and comb treatment weekly. This in-cludes:

Step 1. Comb hair conditioner onto dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around.

Step 2. Thoroughly comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth head lice comb.

Step 3. Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.

Step 4. Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.

Step 5. Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times.

Step 6. If lice or eggs are found, the person should be treated.
