These are the everyday stories of food waste that have probably hap- pened in every house at some point. So unfortunately, for most of people the answer is probably... yes, you do really waste food. Most of the time, it's not intentional. No one likes to see good food go to waste. We buy delicious food to feed ourselves and our family. Do I really waste that much money? So why is food waste such a big deal? Is it really costing me that much money? Unfortunately for the average Victorian family, the answer is probably yes. Here's how much it's costing: * The average Victorian household throws out $2,200 worth of food each year that's $42 per week! * One fifth or 20% of the yearly grocery budget is wasted on average. That's like throwing out 1 in every 5 bags of food you buy! * Victorians collectively throw out $4 billion worth of food each year that’s enough to feed 367,000 families for a year, based on a weekly spend of $207. * Victorians throw away $700 million worth of leftovers per year that’s enough to buy laptops for 580,000 school children So while nobody wants to waste food, it certainly does happen. And it is potentially costing your family money as well as wasting precious resources. The good news? Wasting food is something that we can easily change by just doing a few things differently - like shopping with a list and checking if you're storing items correctly. You'll save on your grocery bill and help the environment!

Do I really waste food? Have you ever...

put leftovers in the fridge only to rediscover them a week later with

some fuzz growing on them?

bought some fresh fruit only to see its passed over until it's shrivelled

and unappetizing?

made dinner for everyone only to find plans have changed and only

half gets eaten? These are the everyday stories of food waste that have probably hap-pened in every house at some point.

Unfortunately for the average Victorian family, the answer is probably

yes.

Here's how much it's costing:

* The average Victorian household throws out $2,200 worth of food each year – that's $42 per week!

* One fifth or 20% of the yearly grocery budget is wasted on average. That's like throwing out 1 in every 5 bags of food you buy!

* Victorians collectively throw out $4 billion worth of food each year – that’s enough to feed 367,000 families for a year, based on a weekly spend of $207.

* Victorians throw away $700 million worth of leftovers per year – that’s enough to buy laptops for 580,000 school children

So while nobody wants to waste food, it certainly does happen. And it is potentially costing your family money as well as wasting precious resources. The good news? Wasting food is something that we can easily change by just doing a few things differently - like shopping with a list and checking if you're storing items correctly. You'll save on your grocery bill and help the environment!

Winter vegetables are the hero in this first month of winter. Snow is on the nearby mountains and a winter chill is in the air. Brassica’s and beets are amongst some favourites. What’s growing in your home vegie garden?……..Not much happens commercially on local farms this time of year so we are looking for inspiration from the home back gardens.

Silverbeet is the winner in ours!

Come along and learn some tips from Patrizia Simone as she conduct another great cooking demonstration with winter vegetables in the Church Hall from 10.30a.m –

What is elder abuse? Elder abuse is mistreatment of an older person that is committed by someone with whom the older person has a relationship of trust such as a partner, family member, friend or carer. Elder abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect. Elder maltreatment can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. Sometimes family, friends and carers may not know that their actions amount to elder abuse. The World Health Organization describes elder abuse as a violation of human rights and a significant cause of illness, loss of productivity, isolation and despair. (WHO 2002 Active Ageing Policy Framework). As such, it is an issue that affects not only the person who is impacted directly but also the broader community.

Older people have the right, just like people of all ages, to live safely free from harm, abuse, and exploitation. Any actions that breach this right are a form of abuse.

Who is affected by elder abuse? Elder abuse is a problem that exists in both developing and developed countries yet is typically underreported globally. Prevalence rates or estimates exist only in selected developed countries — ranging from 1% to 10% of older people. Elder abuse has been shown to affect women and men, people from different cultural backgrounds, people with different levels of education and wealth, and both city-dwellers and country folk. The incidence of abuse towards older people is predicted to increase as many countries experience rapidly ageing populations. Although the extent of elder abuse is unknown, it is nonetheless a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community.

Where can I find out more? Seniors Rights Victoria works to prevent elder abuse from occurring by offering free legal advice and information as well a range of educational and advocacy activities. We are committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity and independence of older Victorians.

You can learn more about elder abuse, and the services of Seniors Rights Victo-ria, via our website at http://www.seniorsrights.org.au

If you are experiencing elder abuse and want to know what options are available to you, call the Seniors Rights Victoria helpline on 1300 368 821

Warning signs of elder abuse may include an older person seeming fearful, anxious or isolated. There may be injuries, or an absence of personal care. Disappearance of possessions, unexplained financial transactions, and changes to a will, property title or other documents are also of concern. While the mistreatment of an older person may be carried out by a family member, it is often other family members who are best placed to support their parent or grandparent against the abuse, provided they recognise what is happening. Like other forms of family violence, most elder abuse occurs behind closed doors, so it is important for loved ones to watch out for signs, listen and offer help. Older people can reduce the risk of elder abuse by making sure their financial, medical, legal and other affairs are in order. They must also be empowered to recognise signs of elder abuse, and speak out.

The Pirate Day Friday Story PIRATE D Our tale began back in 2014 when Pirate Day Friday founder Nathan Colgan’s

son Conor was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. Nathan was told by

Conor’s doctors that the only way to find a cure for Conor and kids like him was

through research, and that costs lots of money.

Nathan discovered that the National Health and Medical Research Council,

which distributes the Australian Government’s annual medical research budget

only allocates around $5 million to paediatric cancer (which is less than 1% of its

total).

Nathan realised that the only way he could change this was to either raise

money through charity work or start a campaign to get the Government’s

attention so they would increase medical research funding.

In November 2014, Conor’s primary school held the first ever Pirate Day Friday

(although technically it was on a Thursday!). The day was such an overwhelming success with all the teachers

enjoying the chance to be a pirate as well, that he decided he would write to all of the primary schools in Australia

and ask them to hold their own Pirate Day Friday.

The first official Pirate Day Friday took place the next year on 12 June. It was decided that the second Friday in June would be set as the annual date for the event because it falls within the school term for all Australian schools.

Friday, 9 June is the official date for Pirate Day Friday 2017, however you can also nominate the best day

for you, your school or community to get involved and raise funds.

WHAT WE FUND

Funds raised by Pirate Day Friday go toward childhood brain cancer research to improve treatments and

find a cure.

Brain cancer is the most common form of tumour in children and is the second most common cause of

death in children in Australia. Treatments available vary depending on tumour type, grade, child’s age,

overall health.

As a child is still developing these treatments can be invasive and often result in substantial and

permanent side effects.

What Is Motor Neurone Disease (MND)? Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells - neurones - controlling the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, breathe and swallow, fail to work normally.
