WELCOME

Welcome to our sixth form Prospectus; I hope the information contained here will give you a flavour of what

it means to be a member of the happy, thriving, caring, inclusive and high-performing community that is Myton

School. Our learning community is based upon mutual respect and the belief that ‘every person can walk a step or

two with genius’. We know that the potential of our students is virtually limitless and that every person can surpass

every expectation if they dare to dream, when supported and nurtured by great teaching with outstanding learning

opportunities and a sense of community all based on a strong partnership between home and school.

Our excellent sixth form plays a vital part in the success of our school and in the fast-paced, technologically rich,

ever-changing multi-cultural world our students will live in, we know that those who will thrive will be adaptable, active

learners who see challenges as opportunities and who understand that learning is a lifelong process. We want our

students to be responsible citizens of the world who are environmentally and socially aware, and who by their own

actions make their own lives a success and the lives of those around them better. We believe that sixth form students

should be developing their leadership skills and that they have a responsibility for their own learning and the learning

and happiness of those around them, playing a full part in the life of the whole school. This process improves their

employability and flexibility, and at Myton it ensures exceptionally high numbers of our students obtain their places

at their first choice university. Recent research by the Sutton Trust and Department for Education states that, students

from good 11-18 school sixth forms are likely to be more successful than their counterparts from selective or private

schools in obtaining top qualifications at university. This is no surprise to parents, students and staff at Myton.

Whilst we are already a successful school, we are also ambitious and forward thinking. We demonstrate our drive

and ambition through the everyday actions of our community. We were the first school to convert successfully to

Academy status in our area; we are an active and preferred partner with universities; we have a relentless focus on

teaching and learning as a Training School and our results place Myton in the top ten percent of comprehensive

schools nationally for guiding students into work, training and university. Our priorities for the future include the

development of our site, the continued support for teaching and learning, enhancing partnerships with others and

further development of student leadership across the school and beyond. Academically, our standards are high

and continue to improve even further year on year; however we know that the key to our success is our shared

high expectations, underpinned by the happy ‘family’ atmosphere and enduring values that make up the everyday

experience of all the people in the Myton community.

INTRODUCTIONMyton’s aim is to foster a vibrant, supportive and happy sixth form community in which each student is encouraged to develop a wide range of intellectual, cultural and recreational interests, to strive for excellence in fulfilling their potential and to develop a sense of independence and social and moral responsibility in preparation for the roles they will play in the wider community of the 21st century.

By choosing to study at Myton sixth form you will have the opportunity to study in a professional environment with the support of a dedicated and skilled team of staff. Whether you are an existing Myton School student or a newcomer to the school, we believe that you will experience an outstanding education.

We are able to offer students outstanding teaching from a team of highly qualified teachers and tutors with a track record of success. Our excellent pastoral system in the sixth form is further supported by our dedicated sixth form Support Tutor skilled in key areas such as UCAS, Oxbridge applications, career planning and student attainment monitoring. Successive Ofsted inspections have noted the “outstanding” teaching in the sixth form as a significant strength of our school.

Our examination results are outstanding – well above local and national averages – with most students going on to their first choice of university, including regular entrants to Oxford, Cambridge and medical school. In addition, each year students gain entry into professions and high quality traineeships and apprenticeships in national companies.

Facilities for students are constantly developing. There is a large dedicated Common Room and a separate Study Centre for sixth form students as well as access to our outstanding Learning Resource Centre. The Study Room boasts a dedicated sixth form careers section, in which students can find copies of university prospectuses, together with a wealth of material offering advice for researching possible careers. A recent addition is the

hugely popular ‘Learning L@tte’, our cyber café, designed by sixth formers, around which sixth form life revolves. Students mostly use this superb facility at breaks and lunchtimes but the café is open during study periods as well. Here, students meet and socialise, work on classwork or homework, or explore wider learning opportunities on the touch screen computers.

The transition into sixth form can be challenging to begin with but at Myton, where the support system, academic standard and general atmosphere are so outstanding, it just makes things that little bit easier.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Sixth form tutors support our students in all aspects of sixth form teaching and learning and in the wider experience of being part of the Myton community. Whilst we concentrate our efforts on helping students to attain their best grades through our academic mentoring, we also encourage and support students to enrich their sixth form experience through the wider programme of activities. Key dates are set aside in the school calendar for progress reports and parents’ evenings where staff are on hand to work with students and parents to provide guidance and support. In addition, there is a very experienced sixth form Staff Leadership Team who work closely with tutors and teaching staff to support students’ development.

We have a specialist non-teaching sixth form Support Tutor who is on hand to work with students on all aspects of their development whether it be study skills support, university and careers guidance or academic intervention.

Students at Myton have a dedicated team of experienced tutors who support every aspect of their development. They meet with their personal tutor during registration time for notices, bulletins and tutorial activities and there are weekly assemblies which form part of the personal development programme.

Attending Myton sixth form has helped me develop as an individual and prepared me for university and the world of work; it encourages independence and self-discovery and I will be sad to leave.

All students take part in a personal, social and health education programme which covers a wide variety of topics. We have visits from local healthcare experts, a programme of university and careers speakers, a driving safety & skills course and we have developed links with national charities such as the Teenage Cancer Trust. A very popular activity is the termly ‘Question Time’ when students are given the opportunity to grill staff on a variety of topical issues. We invite speakers from a wide range of backgrounds and interests to address our students; recent highlights include Lord Faulkner of Worcester, Will Wyatt from the BBC and Charlie Higson, children’s author and Fast Show star.


THE SIXTH FORM CURRICULUMOur vision for all students is that they achieve and complete a set of high-quality, highly-valued qualifications that will prepare them for lifelong learning and the 21st century workplace. At Myton, it is a principle that we only offer high currency qualifications that enable our students to make real choices in life.

The sixth form curriculum has a core of ‘traditional’ A levels and has developed a complementary set of high quality BTEC and Applied qualifications to reflect student interests and allow a broad choice.

Students follow a curriculum which suits their preferred way of working, their interests, their ability and their future aspirations.

The student-teacher relationships at Myton sixth form are completely different to earlier on in the school, we break the boundaries and create a much more relaxed, enjoyable feel for our learning.

We offer several pathways for students; routes through their sixth form studies that are informed by GCSE achievement and 18+ aspirations; and we are constantly reviewing our offer to meet students’ needs. Each student’s case is considered individually and advice given accordingly. Some subjects can be taken without previous study.

We also offer the AQA Extended Project Qualification which is highly regarded by universities. This entails a student-led research project culminating in a 5,000 word report. It opens up the opportunity for students to specialise in an area of particular interest to them, which might develop an area of study from one of their existing courses or provide them the scope to investigate a new area of study completely*.

ENRICHMENT IN THE SIXTH FORMStudents’ wider development is encouraged through a broad range of enrichment and leadership opportunities which give students the chance to extend their horizons and gain valuable personal skills to support their transition to higher education and the world of work. Research has reinforced what we all know; that learning in a successful and high performing 11-18 age range comprehensive school reinforces the flexibility and social skills needed to flourish at university and beyond. (Sutton Trust research 2012).

All students are encouraged to help make a difference to others in the school and local

community by volunteering their services in a variety of ways. Many students give up their time in school to support younger students in the classroom or on the sports field. Current students have volunteered with the Myton Hospices, given support with our partner primary schools in the classroom and assisted in local charity shops, to name a few.

We offer the opportunity for students to become involved in

the Company Programme where they will set up and run their own real company over a year. This allows students to develop a whole array of enterprising skills and the chance to develop a clearer understanding of how business works. Myton students have an excellent record of success in local and regional competitions.

YOUNG

ENTERPRISE

Every week there is the opportunity for students to access sports fixtures and recreational sporting activities. There is a programme of fixtures with local schools in football, rugby, netball, hockey and basketball whilst some students take the opportunity to enhance their skills or wellbeing at local golf clubs, gymnasia or swimming pools.

SPORT

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is well-established at Myton and offers students the opportunity to

acquire new skills, serve others and experience new challenges and adventures.

Aspiring journalists and writers get together to produce a termly

magazine covering a diverse range of features and articles. Two of our recent editors are currently studying journalism at university.

Myton is proud of its musical and dramatic heritage and sixth form

students play a major role in these activities. Music offers opportunities in various choirs and ensembles and there are two major productions a year with significant sixth form involvement.

DRAMA AND

MUSIC

There are numerous trips and visits to support the curriculum and to develop

wider interests. Recent trips abroad include visits to Iceland, New York, Brühl and Barcelona, whilst closer to home sixth form students have visited the House of Commons, Warwick Business School and Bletchley Park.

Sixth form students have also enjoyed fabulous experiences with the World Challenge. Most recently students visited Zambia to work on a number of community projects.

SIXTH FORM STUDENT LEADERSHIPStudent Leadership is a key element of the Myton experience and this is especially true of the sixth form. Students are encouraged to develop leadership qualities in a variety of ways and there are opportunities for all students to contribute to the leadership of sixth form matters as well as making strides in personal development.

Each year a Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputies are selected via presentations and interviews to head the sixth form Leadership Team which represents student opinion, helps shape sixth form policy and plays a part in shaping the student experience at Myton. Currently the sixth form Leaders run committees as follows:

The Leadership Team also co-opt members from the wider student body including year 12.

The experiences of a student leader change each week, can be many and varied and include:

Running a student voice group

Sitting on an interview panel for new staff

Delivering an assembly

Contributing alongside staff to a school improvement group

Liaising with local organisations and businesses

Hosting special guests and school events

Subject ambassadors are selected in a similar way to work closely with departments to enhance the student experience. This new initiative has been a great success with students working alongside staff in a number of ways.

The well-established Buddy Programme invites external trainers to prepare 40+ students each year to support students in Key Stage 3 and the Read2Read scheme works with younger students to support literacy.

OUR SITEAs education moves forward so do the spaces in which our staff teach and our students learn. We value our environment. As a successful and high-performing school we have not been a priority for County Council funding over the years. We have been highly successful in improving our site with a number of partners ranging from our ‘Friends of Myton’, national foundations and the Department for Education.

As an Academy, however, we have ambitious plans to create a learning environment that will enable us to deliver a world class education; we have just completed the first phase of our visionary 10 year site development plan on-time and within budget. We have been successful in gaining grants and support in order to develop new learning environments and technologies.

Our new 12 classroom English Department has a cyber café for the sixth form and staff to use which is ‘Proud to Serve’ Costa coffee – one of the first branded coffee offerings at a school in the county. In addition it has two state of the art ICT suites and a flexible learning classroom that supports our strategy for delivering top class learning in English, digital media, communications and film.

Our outdoor learning space, with tiered amphitheatre seating for performances, was opened in September 2012. This is an exciting development that will create a focal point at the heart of the school for the performing arts and alternative teaching strategies. It is also available for students simply to perform to their peers at break and lunch times, as well as after school.

The next phase of delivering our 10 year vision is to develop a sixth form & adult learning centre that will again embrace modern technology and learning environments.

The plans for this large standalone facility will include a lecture theatre/conference venue, a significant study environment with state of the art technology for our students and a combination of the more traditional classroom and flexible learning ‘pods’. We are also looking currently at the feasibility of incorporating a day nursery for staff and community use.

Whilst we continue to maintain and

develop our site, we are always

mindful of our local community.
