Successful start to 2011 for Naas GAA Club

2011 has been an exciting year for Naas GAA Club, we have already seen success in both U16 division 1 Hurling and football, minor ladies football and our U14 camogie team won the Kildare Feile competition and are preparing for their trip to All Ireland Finals in Galway at the end of June. Our senior football team had a fine win in round 1 of the Senior championship defeating Leixlip and are performing well in the division 1 league.

The senior hurlers drew with Ardclough in round 1 of the senior championship after a mixed league campaign.

Off the pitch there have been many developments in and around the clubhouse, the long awaited Ball wall is now in use and is proving to be beneficial to all club teams

Many thanks to each of the section P.R.O.’s for their contribution to the club newsletter.

In March 2011 we launched the new-look Naas GAA website, here you will find latest fixtures, results, photos, match reports and club news, the site is updated on a daily basis so check back regularly to keep up with all the latest news from Naas GAA Club

Intermediate Team

Following our Junior A Championship win last year Naas Adult Camogie has progressed to Intermediate League and Championship competition this year. The Intermediate League started in April 2011 with 4 teams in the group on a home and away bases. With all first and second round games played we finished in joint 2nd place along with Sarsfields. We now are in a playoff with Sarsfields for a place in the league final which will be against Leixlip. This game takes place next Monday 20th June followed on Wednesday 22nd

June with the final.

Our Championship begins in July and our training nights are Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7.45pm

We are a very young panel of players ranging from 16 years to the early 20’s and have competed very well in our first year in intermediate competition and 14 of this panel won the first Minor A title in the club only last year.

So we are looking forward to going from strength to strength and we are always looking for more players to join our panel and are very welcome.

U8s, U10s and Nursery Our younger members have been very busy during the camogie year so far. Naas Camogie joined in many initiatives to increase the perception of camogie in the Naas area with the intention of increasing participation levels. This has resulted in over 70 girls joining Camogie in the 10 and under age range. Some of the initiatives included:- An indoor schools camogie blitz in November. Mags Darcy (Wexford and All-Star goalkeeper) visiting the local schools in February. An outdoor schools blitz in the Spring (389 girls from Kildare schools took part, over 70 girls from local schools). Beginners local schools blitz in June (53 girls participated). Coaching in the schools (big thank you to Eamonn O'Callaghan and Tony Maher). Four teams (2 x u10s, 2 x u8s) took part in a series of blitzes over April, May and June hosted at Eire Og, Kill and Naas. Further such blitzes will take place in Johnstownbridge and Leixlip in late August and September. The Naas girls have performed very well in these blitzes. We also have been working hard with the very young age groups to develop their enjoyment of the sport. It has been great that some new mentors have joined us this year; however we need more adults (parents, players, former players and helpers) to ensure that we are able to sustain and indeed further develop the new young players and to further develop the skills of the existing young players. So, if anyone can help in any way whatsoever, please contact any current mentor of Naas Camogie.

A very successful Mum and Me programme was rolled out over 6 weeks by Naas Camogie. Over 20 mothers took part in the programme which ran during February and March on Saturday mornings in the clubhouse grounds.

Mothers were invited along to their daughters training and were taught a specific skill of camogie for the first 20minutes of the session while their daughters were with their regular coach. They then took their own daughters for the last half of the session and coached them the skill. The programme which is an initiative by the Camogie Association aims to involve parents more in their own child’s development as a player, help in recruiting mentors and address the issue of drop out at a later stage.

The programme was rolled out with the help of Kildare Sports Partnership which enabled us to buy all mothers a Hurley and Sliotar to practice with. Huge thanks are due to Eve Talbot, Regional Camogie Development Officer who organised this initiative for Naas. This programme went down a treat with the mothers and a special mention goes to Ollie Mernagh who tutored the mothers for the 6 weeks. A presentation of certificates took place on April 9th to all mothers who took part in the programme.

U12 Camogie This group have had a busy year to date. Some highlights include: (Squad 30 players) March: Challenge match with Lucan April Challenge matches with Celbridge & Palmerstown and in house blitz day May Challenge matches with Kilruane McDonaghs & Burgess (Tipp) and Go Games blitz with Eire Og & Maynooth June Annual tour to St. Martins, Piercetown (Wexford) followed by fun activities at Leisure Max Naas in Mini League Amber Group with Rathcoffey, Eire Og & Kill Nas na Riogh in Mini League Blue Group with Broadford, Kilcock, Johnstown Bridge & Cappagh

U 13 Camogie The majority of this group of girls have been together since they started playing camogie at the age of 6 or 7. As they advanced through the years they have taken part in the various leagues and blitzes of each age group. They have always given their best for their team and their Club and have numerous medals/trophies to show for their hard work and commitment. 2009/2010 They reached the final of the U12 Div 1 League, being beaten by their main opponents Maynooth. 2008/2009 They took home the trophy for the U11 Div 1 League 2008/2009 They won the U12 Div 3 League 2007/2008 They won the U10 Div 1 League A number of these girls also play with the U14 squad, (some since they were U9) and have had success with this team also. One of the girls also plays with the County camogie team. Many of this group of girls are part of this years Feile team representing Kildare in the National Feile Finals in Galway. Mentors: Patricia O'Callaghan Catherine Conway Eamon O'Callaghan

Kildare Camogie – 2011 has seen Kildare Camogie switch to a County School of Excellence(SOE) program rather than competitive games which they had taken part in the past. The emphasis has been on player development & improving core skills as well as fostering inter club friendships amongst players & mentors alike.

Naas Camogie Club provided 2 mentors (Frank Hegarty & Leah Finnerty) as well as 6 of our current U14 panel, Aisling Kelly, Claire Kavanagh, Megan Campion, Katie Kellaghan, Aine Conway & Roisin O’Hara. The girls committed to 6 Sundays of training out in Eire Og as well as 2 inter county blitz days which I am happy to say Kildare managed to field 3 teams in each blitz.

The county provided each girl with their own windcheater at the last Blitz day in Thurles and it is great to see our 6 girls wearing them with pride at training & matches as well as watching them catch up with their fellow county players from the other participating clubs at league matches.

Best of luck to all who took part & to the Naas six I hope to see you pull on the white of Kildare for many years to come. – Frank Hegarty

U14 Camogie

Naas U14 camogie team reached the final of the division 1 league in May this year. Despite a strong second half comeback Naas lost out to Celbridge on final score line of Naas 3.00 Celbridge 5.03. Despite this loss the 2011 league campaign can certainly be described as a huge success for this group of girls born in 1997 and 1998. See highlights below

Round 1 - 9th April 2011 Naas 1.04 Celbridge 2.01

Naas travelled to Celbridge for their opening league encounter and dominated the first half with scores from Aine Conway and newest team member Claire Cahill. A lapse in concentration from the Naas backs in the second half saw Celbridge take the lead, however two points from vice captain Megan Campion saw Naas earn a well deserved draw.

Round 2 - 17th April 2011 Naas 5.03 Eire Og 0.01

Captain Aisling Kelly put in an outstanding display in this encounter with a very young Eire Og side. Scores from Aine Conway, Claire Cahill, and Kelly Doolan were some of the highlights.

Round 3 24th April 2011 Naas 2.02 Maynooth 0.00

Naas put in an excellent team effort to defeat Maynooth at home on Easter Sunday, There were good performances all over the field however the half back line of Niamh Bergin, Hannah Cusack and Tara Breen were outstanding and dominated the game.

Round 4 - 15th May 2011 Naas 1.00 Kill 0.00

Naas travelled to Kill for round 4 of the league fresh from victory in the Feile final. As is always the case, close neighbours Kill put in a battling display. Lorna Bergin continued her excellent league form with an outstanding display from midfield. Roisin O Toole grabbed the vital winning score with 5 minutes remaining.

Round 5 - 21st May 2011 Naas 5.01 Rathcoffey 3.02

The final league game was a home encounter with Rathcoffey. A win would ensure Naas a place in the league final. This was an excellent performance from the Naas side who have developed into a strong team unit over the past 6 months. There were good performances all over the field from Claire Kavanagh, Niamh Bergin, Tara Breen, Lorna Bergin, Megan Campion and Aisling Kelly.

Feile na nGael 2011

The Kildare Camogie Feile took place in Hawkfield on Sunday May 8th 2011. A large crowd turned up to see girls from Celbridge, Clane, Maynooth, Moorefield, Naas and Rathcoffey battle it out for honours on the day. The day began with a parade of the teams led out by piper David Ussher and with club colours and banners in abundance we were set for an exciting day. The Feile A semi-finals were first with Celbridge playing Rathcoffey on pitch 1 and Maynooth and Naas on pitch 2

On pitch 2 things were very tight as Maynooth and Naas were level at full time. In extra time Naas got the all important point from the hurl of Aine Conway to secure a spot in the Final over a young but gallant Maynooth side. The Feile A final was always going to be a close affair as Celbridge and Naas had played two very competitive draws in the last month. In front of a packed stand Celbridge started the better and should have scored on at least three occasions but some brilliant goalkeeping by player of the day Roisin O'Hara kept Celbridge out. Instead it was Naas who scored first with goals from inform Megan Campion and Eve O Callaghan followed by a lovely point again from Megan Campion gave a commanding half time lead.

But the reigning champions Celbridge were not about to lie down and they laid siege to the Naas goal in the second half. Gillian Keegan opened the scoring for Celbridge with a brilliant individual goal and when Hannah Quinn fired over a superb 45 we were in for a grandstand finish. But the Naas defence held rock solid for a nail biting final ten minutes to keep a proud Celbridge at bay and claim the Kildare Feile title for only the second time in their history Naas captain Aisling Kelly and her team were presented with the Feile Trophy by the President of the Camogie Association Joan O 'Flynn, and they will now represent Kildare at Feile na nGael in Galway on June 24th – 26th.

Naas U16 Camogie put in solid campaign Naas U16s had a highly successful league run during the late Spring. Naas played in Division One South and had difficult opponents in St. Laurences, Eire Og and Na Brideoga (a combination side drawn from Nurney, Athy and Moorefield). Naas opened against old rivals St. Laurences and had a good win over a game St. Laurences team on a 4.06 to 0.02 scoreline. Naas followed with a smooth home win against a young Eire Og team, 5.02 to 0.00. As Naas were idle in the subsequent week, they had a useful home workout against Dublin side Naomh Fionnbarra and made it three wins on the trot. Naas were now playing at their peak and had another good win against combined team Na Brideoga on a strong 9.08 to 3.02 scoreline. Having come through their group stage in very convincing style, Naas now entertained Celbridge in the Division One semi-finals. Despite going into half-time just behind, Celbridge got a run on Naas in the second-half and won on a slightly flattering scoreline of 5.09 to 1.04. Naas now faced Na Brideoga again in the Shield final. However, injuries suffered by key Naas players in other activities meant that the settled line-up had to be altered and changes had to be made. However, the final was a thrilling game and the lead continuously changed hands in the second-half. A draw appeared to be on the cards coming towards the final whistle, however a very late Brideoga goal sealed it for the opposition in a game where their goalie had a very rewarding night, on a 6.04 to 5.04 scoreline. Naas had put in excellent performances throughout the campaign with Saoirse Ferguson, Niamh Hegarty, Niamh Tuohy, Síne Kenny, Niamh Phelan, Ellen McNamee, Eimear Holohan and Sarah Clancy amongst the most consistent performers. This solid performance will put the members of both the minor and u15 squads from this grouping in confident form entering the Autumn campaigns. Naas Squad: Ellen McNamee, Emma Lewis, Roisin O'Hara, Eimear Holohan, Niamh Hegarty, Síne Kenny, Karen Benn, Niamh Tuohy, Niamh Phelan, Sarah Clancy, Emma Casey, Chloe Pitt, Maedbh O'Brien, Saoirse Ferguson, Ciara Brown, Sarah Benn, Sarah Kelly, Claire Kavanagh, Katie Kellaghan, Roisin O Toole, Aine Conway, Aisling Kelly.

Juvenile Hurling Group Updates U5s & U6s: 35 players attend training regularly each Saturday morning since the outdoor season began in April. Much of the emphasis for these boys is placed on varying the skills and building a fun element into the training sessions. The boys played Sallins in a challenge recently and further games are planned throughout the summer. U7s: Between 20 and 25 players train every Saturday morning. The U7s do not have a North Kildare League competition to partake in so they have been busy playing a series of challenge games both home and away. The boys have played Ballyboden St Endas, Lucan Sarsfields and Sallins and are heading to Littleton in Tipperary to play Durlas Óg and Moycarkey Borris in June. U8s: The U8 group played Celbridge, Leixlip & Maynooth in the North Kildare League. Although there are small numbers in this group the boys put in great performances securing 3 victories, a draw and only 1 defeat. The U7s teamed up with the U8s to play challenge games against Sallins and Ballyboden and a number of similar challenges are planned. It is hoped the success of the “Street League” will lead to more players joining the U8 group. U9s: 18 – 20 boys attend the U9 Saturday morning sessions. Training has focused on developing the skills of lifting, striking from the hand, blocking and tackling. Good progress has been made and is evident in the increasing ease with which many are lifting, striking and blocking in competitive games. Two U9 teams participated in the North Kildare Board Spring League, playing home and away. A highlight this year has been the opportunity for a number of U9s to join the U10 Shield team for the Naas U10 Tournament on June 11th. Their outstanding performances helped Naas secure the Shield. U10s: The U10s had a busy North Kildare League campaign entering two balanced teams with home and away games against Éire Óg Corra Choill, Edenderry, Maynooth and Leixlip. The group also played a series of challenge games against Bray Emmets, Na Fianna, Passage East, Naomh Eanna, Tramore, Kilruane MacDonaghs, Ballyboden, Skerries and Kilmacud Crokes and trained twice a week in preparation for the Naas U10 Tournament on June 11th

Naas Juvenile Hurling Section have in excess of 300 boys playing, training and representing the Club on a regular basis throughout Kildare and indeed participating in many of the traditional hurling counties where they have achieved many memorable victories. The “outdoor” season began in mid-March 2011 following the “Indoor Marathon” which traditionally signals the end of another indoor season. The Easter Hurling Camp again proved very successful and the newly constructed “Ball Wall” has proved a major asset and resource. In early May a “Street League” commenced for boys U8 and although initially planned for 5 weeks the event has been extended to mid-July due to the enormous success of the event and the enthusiasm shown by all.

U10 Hurling Tournament – June 2011 The U10 Tournament was a resounding success with teams from Ahane, Athenry, Dicksboro, James Stephens, Na Piarsaigh, Naomh Eanna and Passage East participating. Both Naas teams played with unbelievable determination and skill throughout the day. The Cup team had memorable victories over Ahane, Dicksboro, Passage East and Naomh Eanna only to be narrowly beaten by James Stephens in a very exciting final. The outstanding Shield team remained undefeated in their group and then had a very impressive victory against Naomh Eanna in the final. Well done to all involved, the boys, mentors, parents, volunteers, sponsors and many supporters.

U11s: After an exciting and competitive Indoor Hurling Season the U11 panel entered the U12 North Kildare Spring League with teams in Division 1 and Division 2. The group have played in U11 tournaments in Cuala and Ballyboden and travelled to Athenry and James Stephens for challenge games. All the games were thoroughly enjoyed by the players who enjoyed the opportunity to play and compete with boys from other counties. U12s: On St. Patrick's Day the U12 group travelled to Lucan Sarsfields and fielded two teams for challenge games before heading onwards to Croke Park to watch the All-Ireland Club Football and Hurling Finals. A great day was finished off with a mandatory “pit stop” in McDonalds on the way home. Two balanced teams played in Division 1 of the North Kildare Spring league with both teams qualifying for the semi-finals before bowing out to Celbridge and Edenderry. This group also entered two balanced teams in the Kildare All County Registration Blitz on June 4th where Naas2 emerged victorious defeating the hosts Leixlip. Naas1 were very unlucky not to make it an all Naas final after narrowly losing out on scoring difference. On May 31st a challenge game was played against James Stephens in St Kieran’s College with the hosts winning on this occasion. Further challenge games are planned including games against Na Piarsaigh and Gorey. The group hope to participate in the Camaint event in Dublin over the summer.

Page 11: NAAS GAA CLUB Club Club Newsletter June 2011sportlomo-userupload.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/7080/naas_gaa… · Successful start to 2011 for Naas GAA Club 2011 has been an exciting

U13s: The u13s entered Division 2 of the U14 Kildare Féile competition. Having secured a draw with Éire Óg Corra Choill followed by four great victories over Confey, Ardclough, Kilcock and Coill Dubh the young Naas team qualified undefeated to play Kilcock in the final in St Conleth’s Park Newbridge. Throughout the league all 24 panellists contributed to the team’s success. Although there were many fine individual performances within the U13 group in the various rounds of the competition their greatest asset was their large panel. On many occasions the boys who joined the field from the bench made a huge difference and contributed greatly to the match outcomes. Un the Final, Kilcock emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins when age and physical size proved a deciding factor. Since Féile the group played Clara for the Dan Ryan Cup and the Kilkenny boys proved too strong on this occasion. The U14 League has commenced with victories over Éire Óg Corra Choill and Confey. U14s: The Naas U14 panel began their outdoor season with a series of challenge games against the Kildare U14 Development Squad, Faughs, St Judes, Lucan Sarsfields, Mountmellick and Portlaoise in preparation for the Feile competition. Competing in Division 1 Naas began their Féile campaign with victories over Clane, Maynooth, Leixlip and Celbridge and qualified for the final against Leixlip. Despite having defeated Leixlip in the group stages, Naas struggled to find their form in the County Final and had to settle for second best on the day. Since Féile, Naas have played a number of challenges including a fine performance and victory over Lucan Sarsfields and a loss to Kiltale from Meath. Currently the boys are playing in the U14 league and have won their first two rounds of matches. Congratulations to U14 panellist Jack Sheridan on winning the Feile Skills competition in Donore recently. Jack will now represent Co Kildare in the National Féile Finals in Galway. U15s: The 15s played in the U16 league Division 2 and despite their age and the physical difference in strength and size the lads reached the final before losing out to Éire Óg Corra Choill . The group played Lucan Sarsfields and are planning a number of challenge games before the Championship starts later in the summer. U16s: The U16s have retained their 2010 panel of players and have a successful year to date with good turnouts at the training sessions. The group defeated Clane in St Conleth’s Park in a very exciting final of the U16 League Division 1 having remained unbeaten throughout the league stages. The players are currently on a break as many are sitting their Junior Certificate exams. Further challenges are planned for later in the year and the panel are looking forward to the Carlow U16 tournament later this summer.

Finally, a special word of congratulations from the Naas Juvenile Hurling Section goes to the Naas U14 Féile Camogie panel on their recent victory in the Kildare County Finals. Best wishes to all concerned in representing the Club and County at the National Finals in Co Galway.

Juvenile Football News

Juvenile Football Update

There are 373 registered players spread across all age groups from nursery (5+) to U18.

A lot of competitions have yet to get up and running fully because of exams etc but some highlights for the year were the U16 team winning the Division 1 Final beating Kilcock 1-13 to 1-7

And the U14 Feile D team reached their final but unfortunately lost to Celbridge .

At the moment the U14 Div 6 Team are top of their league with 4 wins from 4 while the U14 Div 2 team have some work to do in their league.

As always all teams are dependent on club volunteers to help coach the teams, organise pitches , transport players to matches and even ref the occasional game! Any parent who is interested in helping out in any capacity should contact a team mentor as all help would be greatly appreciated.

S coil Bhride Football Update

Scoil Bhride competed in the Cumann na mBunscol league again this year, both in the U10 & Senior leagues. Last year the U10 team won the Div 6 final and was promoted to Div 5 for 2011. Both teams got off to a great start with the U10’s winning their 3 group matches to top their group and advance to the semi finals where they were beaten by a point by a very spirited Milltown team.

The senior team also got off to a great start winning their first 2 group matches but then came up against two very strong sides from St. Patrick’s in Newbridge and Brannockstown near Kilcullen. Both these teams were fully fielded by 6th class students against a spirited Scoil Bhride team mainly made up of 4th class students with about 4 students from 5th class. Scoil Bhride also beat a strong team of 6th class students from Suncroft in the campaign.

The promising outlook is that for next year the senior team will have all the players available from this campaign to compete in the senior team for next year, with a few promising players to join the team that took part in the U10 campaign this year. There are also a lot of players coming through to fill the places of those players leaving the U10 team for next year and the school should be able to field a very strong team for the U11 campaign in September in both the boys & girls competitions.

A lot of players took part in the training sessions & matches that had never played the game before and hopefully will keep the interest going and start training with the club shortly, with a few players really catching the eye. Naas GAA was strongly represented by the school by Eoin Prizeman, Cathal Daly, Liam Cummins, Joseph Mooney Del Campo, Eddie Byrne, Mark Sleator, Eoin Archbold, Sean Burke, Luca Antolovi & Dylan O’Sullivan.

U10 team looked after by Muinteor Orla & Muinteor Deirdre, senior team looked after by Muinteor Darach with help from Tom O’Sullivan from Naas GAA for both teams & training sessions. Special thanks to Naas GAA for providing equipment for training and pitches for training & matches (particularly John Rapple for laying out the pitches for match days).

Above: U14B Football team who reached the Feile D Final and are currently top of the division 6 league.

U8 Football Update

The U8 football panel has 43 players involved and we had a great turnout for our matches vs Celbridge when 39 players turned up

We are also lucky to have 11 mentors putting in the time and effort every Sunday in coaching this group of footballers.

This year is about building on the great work started by Tommy in the football nursery by improving on the skills the players already have and starting to use these in a match situation. While we play all our matches under the Go Games rules which ensure everyone gets equal game time, they can also be very competitive.

In the U8 league we are in a group with Celbridge, Kilcock and Maynooth and our players are definitely holding their own and may even be at the top end of that group which looks good for the future.

We have been training every week since the 27th Feb and expect to finish up on the 26th June in time for school holidays!

Thanks to all the kids for turning up every Sunday and training and playing in the right spirit. Hopefully we will see some of them move on to bigger and better things in the future with Naas and maybe even Kildare

Senior Hurling News

Senior hurling team- The senior hurlers have been on the go since early Feburary. With a registration night and fitness programme it was the start of a new season. With some new faces / older faces / regular faces it was time for the hard slog on the cold nights, and sometimes very wet nights. With a mixture of all the grades there was a good turn out overall, but always room for more. First up was the Leinster senior league. Fingallians away and a comprensive win there took us back to Naas for a home game against Shanahoe from laois. In what was a very good tough game Naas lost out by 4 pts. That left Naas travelling to Trim in Co.Meath for their next game, which they won with some ease. All this was a nice warm up for the kildare senior hurling league which started on the 20th march away to old rivals Coill Dubh. Below is a list of results so far.The Senior hurling Championship started on the 18th of June v ardclough where Naas drew with their old rivals. Support always appreciated.

Intermediate Team- The intermediates like the seniors have being training since early in the year mixed in with the seniors and juniors. The league has started for them aswell and with some mixed results in league and challenge games they are starting to find there way.

Championship on the way they need full attendance from all there panel.Practice make perfect and to go one better than last year its going to take loads of hard work.

Best of luck to Jim, Pat S, Pat D, Eddie and all involved

Junior Team

The Junior team again like the rest have been training on and off since early Feburary.

Under the guidance of Eamon O Callaghan/Liam Mockler they have been also been getting mixed results in their league campaign. With plenty of matches played both league and challenge, championship couldnt start soon enough.

Again like the other teams to be succesful you have to do the hard work.

If championships were won on heart and determination alone this team would have a string of titles to their name.

Best of luck lads.

U/21 Team

This team started out in early January on a crisp snowy surfaced Monread park. The championship was never finished in 2010 and semi final was down for decision on the 22nd of January.Facing a very strong and determined celbridge team, this game could have gone anyway up until the last 10min. Celbridge ran out convincing winners in the end.

They went on to contest the final a week later and were defeated by a single point from a strong killard team.Well done to Don, John and Denis

U/18 Team

This team finished off last year by winning championship and have started the 2011 season in the league final(postponed) until after the leaving cert.

This is again a very talented bunch of players and under the guideance of Jim Byrne / Pat Stafford, these lads have a great future ahead of them with some already playing leading roles in the three adult teams.

Well done so far lads and best of luck in exams and rest of the season.

Things to look forward to-

FOURTH TEAM Naas Adult team 4 takes part in Senior Football league Division 7. This years league started off well with a good win over Eillistown , but this was followed by defeats to Athy , two mile house and Rheban , Next match was scheduled to be against Allenwood , but they withdrew from the league with the points awarded to Naas, The next match away to Clogheringkoe must go into the records books as Naas won with a huge score of 10:19 to 0:00 .

Kildare Senior Football Championship 2011 – Round 1 – 8th May 2011

Naas 0 - 13 Leixlip 0 - 9

In a windswept Hawkfield Naas had four points to spare over Leixlip in this First Round senior Football Championship game.

The first half was very competitive with each side having their period of dominance. The sides ended the half level at 6 points each. The highlights of the second half were five unanswered points by Naas and an exceptional save by Naas keeper James Cronin and three sendings off, two for Naas and one for Leixlip. However this was not a dirty game and Naas were deserving winners. Leixlip opened the scoring when Eamonn Murphy passed to Paul O; Neill who pointed for Leixlip.Aiden Ryan put them two up after four minutes.Ross Kelly then placed Conor Mellett for a Naas point and then Kevin Curtis equalised at two points each.

Paddy Meagher(Leixlip) and Ronan Joyce(Naas) swapped points before Richie Ormsby put Naas ahead after a solo run up the right wing. Ormsby;s runs up the right wing caused the Leixlip defence some problems.Naas mid-fielders Neil Higgins and Shane Bergin were on top now and the latter put them two points up.Leixlip rallied in the final minutes of the half when they split the Naas defence to score three points through Eamonn Murphy, Paul O'Neill and David Hanlon to lead by one point. On the stroke of half Ronan Joyce equalised for naas. At the interval the sides were level 0 - 6 each.

Leixlip were quick into their stride at the start of the second half. David Jordan pointed and after a goalmouth melee the Naas keeper made a fine save, Naas took control again and pressuried the Leixlip defence. This yielded five points through four Ronan Joyce frees and a Conor Mellett point from play between the 7th. and 16th. minute. Naas now led 0 - 11 to 0 - 7. Between the 17th. and 23rd. minutes two Naas players and one Leixlip player got their marching orders. Leixlip with their numerical advantage reduced the arrears to two points when substitute Eamonn Lambert and Eamonn Murphy pointed. But Naas recovered their composure and points by substitute Kieran Mc Donagh and Shane Bergin restored the four point advantage. In a determined Naas defence Paul Sullivan,Seamie Barrettand Richie Ormsby stood out while midfielders Higgins and Bergin had their best game yet this year. In the forwards Ian Kinlon,Ross Kelly and Ronan Joyce were most prominent. Alan Keary and David Hanlon worked hard in the Leixlip defence while GTommy Moolick put in a good performance at midfield,The Leixlip forwards were impressive and players like Murphy ,Ryan and Claffey would have been dangerous with a better supply of the ball.

Naas: James Cronin,Paul Sullivan,Keith Mc Donnell,Brochan Cocoman,Richie Ormsby(0-1), Seamie Barrett,Eoin Doyle,Shane Bergin(0-2).,Neil Higgins,Ian kinlon,Ross Kelly,David Gahon,Conor Mellet(0-2)t,Kevin Curtis(0-1),Ronan Joyce(0-6)Substitute Kieran Mc Donagh(0-1)

Ladies Football News

Girls Nursery Group :

With the numbers in the Juvenile Girls Football Nursery increasing, it was decided to split this group into two groups from last February. The girls born 2002/03 now make up one group and those born 2004/05/06 the other. With the 2004/05/06 concentrating on learning skills , all in the guise of having fun, the 2002/03 group have finally got the opportunity to play some matches in the 2011 U10 Go Games League.

The first match for the U9 Naas girls was away against Maynooth.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed their first encounter with the opposition. Their next encounter was at home against Leixlip – again another enjoyable experience. The objective of this League is to get children participating in matches and we think you’ll definitely agree from the photos that the girls got stuck in and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

U10 Team

The u10s mentors are very happy with the progress in our group. We feel the girls are enjoying the training & matches, improving their skill level, and an average of approx 15-20 turning up from a panel of 25

We decided at the start of the year to use the “Fun do” Coaching packs from Croke park, at each weeks training, and we’ve found this has improved their overall skill level. We’ve also given out the free “Passports” to the girls, that allow us to grade their skill development, in Gold, Silver & Bronze levels, up until they are 13. We hope to have a special day soon, where some of the minor & senior footballers, will come down to training, to grade each girls on their passport skills.

Regarding matches, we had a few friendlies, before we entered the girls into the u10s spring go-games league, which is currently running, and they’re doing well in this. We also plan to enter them into the u11s Autumn league….which will be a step up for them, and we hope to complete the “skill 2 challenges” from the “Fun Do” Coaching pack for them before the xmas break up.

Thanks to all girls and parents for turning up to training & matches.

Were now in the league proper and are in a group with clubs who have also entered second teams ( Maynooth, Leixlip & Clane ) our first game will be next week against Clane . We currently have up to 15 girls at training every Sunday morning and have a strong team of mentors helping out namely Ger Dunne , Ann Marie Tipp Doyle , Mags Rebel Maher , Anne Tierney and Paul Rossie Duignan. All our games are well supported by parents and we hope to soon have a a group of cheerleaders made up of fanatical mothers .

U12 Girls Team

The under 12 girls football squad have been busy during the autumn 2010 and spring 2011 seasons. We will have clocked up more than 25 matches over the year by June 2011. The vast majority of these matches have been away. We have played throughout Kildare. Players, mentors and a great group of supportive parents also travelled to Offaly and on a regular basis, to Dublin to fulfill fixtures.

In autumn 2010, we took part in the Kildare under 11 go games competition. We performed extremely well. The squad were split into two teams of 9-11 players. The teams played simultaneously against Sarsfields, Confey, Clane and na Fianna. Both Naas teams won comfortably in all games only losing one of their two matches against Clane.

The following spring, the squad then took part in the Under 12 Dublin league, division 2. Despite an encouraging start with a run of victories against Thomas Davies 1 5 to 0 5, St Peregrines 5 11 to 5 5 and Clan na Gael Fontenoy 2 8 to 1 9, we eventually lost out to St. Olafs and St Maurs and two particularly strong teams: O`Toole`s and Naomh Mearnog. Unfortunately ambitions of topping the table on this occasion diminished.

Well done to O`Tooles who now look like the clear winners of this 2011 Dublin League. This squad also look certain to give their division 1 table topping opponents from Foxrock a run for their money next season. The Naas girls reported that in particular, they learned a lot from their experience of playing against this competitive side. O`Tooles were able to pass the ball off efficiently and with speed. Our Naas referee on the day, Des Bergin also came in for high praise for the time he took to explain and highlight, as required, important points of the game to players during the match.

Since that particular game, the Naas girls are setting their standards high. They know their focus needs to be sharp and their determination sustained. They understand that they need to constantly draw on their strong capacity for positive teamwork. The Kildare under 12 league began in early May. To date, we have played and beaten Sarsfields and Robert Emmets in preliminary rounds and Cappagh, Carbury and Maynooth in the league.

As a result, we are now graded into division 1 for this Kildare under 12 league. Last weekend the squad turned out for their first game of the league against Cappagh. Focus, determination and team spirit were very much in evidence. The girls put on an impressive display in this away game, giving them a cracking start to the league and a fantastic win: 6 7 to 1 2. Success continued for the squad when we played our second away match that weekend in Tallaght against Thomas Davies. It was a physical game but the Naas girls held the lead throughout the match to finally win 4 5 to 1 6. The team now look set to capture third place in the Dublin league if they can continue to perform this well.

We are very proud that this squad has over 20 players who show great interest in playing football as proven by the always high and often perfect attendance of players. We are confident that the attitude that goes with this dedication will be rewarded in time with even more success.

U13/14 Girls Football This squad of players have trained enthusiastically since last September in preparation for the u13 autumn league. The 1998 group competed very well, but were narrowly defeated in a final group match and consequently did not qualify for the semi-final stage on this occasion. The club were well represented on the u12 County panels who participated in the final Leinster Blitz in September in Carlow.

Niamh Bergin featured as a forward on the County Kildare squad in Division 1 while Molly Ryan, Mary Creaton, Georgia Mc Holmes and Aoife Shaw played on the Kildare North squad in Division 3.This was invaluable experience for the girls and has greatly contributed to their skill level and performance for the club.During October and November there was an u13 Development squad organised and three of the panel were selected to participate in this 10 week programme. They included Shauna Weldon, Anna Begley and Niamh Bergin. They all showed great committment and represented the county and club with great distinction.

Building on the experience in a competitive u12 league in autumn, the squad was strengthened by the 1997 group of players, numbering six in total, and commenced training for the Féile A Championship. They competed agaist Rathcoffey and St Laurence's in the group stages at the end of March; the latter being one of the eventual Féile finalists. The age profile of the team was very young on the day and many thanks to the u12 players who competed in this u14 competition as the squad were depleted due to players receiving Confirmation on that day.The majority of the players are eligible to compete in the Féile competition again next year. It has been a worthwhile learning curve and will serve them well in the future.

The u14 league commenced in April and players and supporters alike thoroughly enjoyed the fine displays of skill in closely contested matches as is evident from the report Naas v Ellistown. This group of players improved with every match and grew in confidence ; culminating in securing a semi- final place in this league against Celbridge. The opposition were physically stronger and went into an early lead but the Naas team battled back and gallantly competed to the end.The young age profile of the Naas team was a telling factor on the night but an invaluable experience for all the players. The management team would like to compliment all the players and parents for their dedication and support during the past season and look forward to the autumn campaign when the team will compete in u13 and u15 leagues respectively.

Training will continue during the summer months and challenge games have been organised beginning on 7th June when Naas will host Dunlavin u13/u14 ladies' team.Wishing you all a very enjoyable summer and remember to practise your skills whenever an opportunity arises.

U14 Ladies Football League - Round 3

Naas 2-13 Ellistown 3-6

14th April 2011 This third round match of the league opened in lively fashion as Naas hosted Ellistown.Niamh Bergin ,playing at centre field, opened the scoring with a point from play .This was promptly followed by another point from Anna Begley and a goal scored by corner forward Mary Creaton.

Ellistown responded well and notched up afew points after some fine running from Louise Scully.Naas added further points courtesy of Shauna Weldon and the Naas forwards linked up well to extend their lead when Niamh Bergin finished the movement with a goal. Naas led by six points at half time but Ellistown were not deterred. Ellistown started the second half very confidently and found the net on two occasions due to great effort by Niamh Bracken who won and distributed the ball very well. This added great excitement and both teams worked very diligently to edge ahead. The ball moved freely from one end to the other and both defences had to endure some pressure.Miriam Corrigan played very well in the Naas goal, her debut for the club in that position, ably assisted by Grace Mc Entagart at full back,Aisling Kelly,Alison Walsh,Hannah Heveran,Kelly Perkins ,Siobhán Marmian and Eve O Callaghan who all played very steadily throughout.

Naas regrouped and their midfield and forwards worked tirelessly and they were rewarded with further points from Mary Creaton, Niamh Bergin,Anna Begley and Shauna Weldon. All the Naas forwards played very well and passed very cleverly to each other, namely Laura Naughtoin, Georgia Mc Holmes,Laura Owens and Megan Loughlin. The Ellistown defence battled very well and were particularly well served by Ella Mc Loughlin ,playing at centre back. With five minutes remaining,Naas proved too strong and notched up a few more points to claim victory by four points. Great credit to both teams for a most entertaining and sporting match enjoyed by all their supporters . Scorers: Niamh Bergin 1-4 ,Mary Creaton 1-3 ,Anna Begley 0-3,Shauna Weldon 0-3.

Ladies Minor A Shield Final - 15th April 2011

Naas 4-10 Celbridge 3-10 (After Extra- Time)

This game promised to be a very competitive game and it certainly lived up to all expectations.

Naas opened the scoring with a point from Saoirse Ferguson, quickly followed by a point from Chelsea Crowe who was awarded a free. She notched up a further point from play. Celbridge replied with their first score; a finely struck point by their midfield player Nicole Mc Donagh.

Both teams exchanged points in an exciting game. Clare Gahan and Naomi Curtis contributed a point respectively to extend the Naas lead while Nicole Mc Donagh and Leah Earley added to the Celbridge tally.

Both defences worked tirelessly throughout the first half namely Mairead Drewitt , Rachael Corrigan and Bríona Hoban for Naas and Aoife O Brien performed very well as centre back for Celbridge. Naas led by two points at half time on a score line ; Naas 0-5 Celbridge 0- 3. Both teams had missed chances in the first half but it was all to play for in the second half.

This closely fought contest continued in the same vein as Naas resumed the scoring with another point from the boot of Clare Gahan and Celbridge promptly replied with a goal after five minutes followed by a point from Ailbhe Earley . Celbridge had taken the lead by a goal but this was short lived as Naomi Curtis netted the ball for Naas after tenacious work by Bríd Doolan at centre field; evident throughout the match.

Celbridge continued to attack but was consistently foiled by Niamh Hederman in the Naas full back line and Rachael Corrigan as centre back collected a lot of breaking ball and distributed it well to the Naas forwards who secured another goal only to be cancelled out by another goal scored by Orla Gowran of Celbridge.

With five minutes remaining the teams were tied on 2-8 and both teams worked very hard to play their forwards into scoring positions and Celbridge struck first with their full forward Sarah Mc Niffe finding the net to put her team ahead with a few minutes remaining.

There was a final twist to this enthralling final as Sarah Ann Lahart linked up with wing forward Shauna Weldon who scored a cracking goal to force extra time as both teams ended on a very credible score line of 3-8 each.

Naas secured the first point in extra time courtesy of Naomi Curtis following a great block by Naas centre back Rachael Corrigan. Celbridge duly responded with a point which could have been a goal but for the alertness of the Naas goalkeeper Aoife Hederman who guided it over the cross bar.At half time both teams were on level terms and ten minutes remained to secure a result.

Naas continued to exert more pressure which resulted in another goal from the boot of Shauna Weldon after an accurate pass from Sarah Ann Lahart ; a similar passing movement which resulted in the equalising goal at the end of the second half.

Celbridge applied their pressure too and scored a further point but a final point from Naomi Curtis secured a well - earned victory for Naas on the day.

This was a most entertaining match and all the players on both teams deserve great praise for their enthusiasm and skills exhibited on the pitch. It was a very closely contested match and both teams were in contention until the final whistle.

The Naas squad feature many underage players and it portends very well for the future of the club.

Great credit is due to both teams and their mentors for their commitment and promotion of Ladies' Football in the county.

Scorers: Shauna Weldon 2-0, Naomi Curtis 1-4, Saoirse Ferguson 1-1, Chelsea Crowe 0-3 and Clare Gahan 0-2.

In 1933 a second club was formed in the town. It was called the Towers and they practiced on the Fair Green.

Naas had five players on the Kildare team that won the All- Ireland final in 1927 and 1928. They were Jack Higgins, Gus Fitzpatrick, Joe Curtis, Tom Wheeler and Dan Ryan.

Naas won their first Minor Football championship in 1932 as Naas St.Davids. They have won it four more times in 1934,1952,1981 and 1983.

Naas won their first hurling title in 1934 defeating Rathcoffey in the final 4 –0 to 2 – 3. This was called the Civilian league as the army teams were not allowed to play in the competition,

Naas camogie club known as St.Brigids was founded in 1931 by Fr. Owen Brennan.

In 1890 the club went out of existence, as did many clubs due to the Parnell split.

The club was officially reformed in 1902 as”The Dillons”

There was no official club in the town between 1908 and 1912.

The club moved from Spooners Lane in 1933 to Fr. Brennan Park

In 1973 the clubhouse was built and in 2004 the club moved from the Dublin rd. To its present premises on the Sallins Rd.

DEVELOPMENT MEMBERSHIP

Its over 7 years now since our development members signed up as long term supporters of the club. The membership was due to cease on 31st of March 2011.

However as a gesture of goodwill to those members, it was agreed at a recent meeting of the executive committee of the club, to extend this membership (for the original named adults only) until 31st December 2011.

This extension does not include any children of development members either aged over or under 18 years of age.

Social Nights

5th June last was a very memorable night for many club supporters. The 'Sunday night crew' aided and abetted by DJ extraordinaire Gerry 'The Legend' Halton organised a 70's themed disco for the Mammas and the Pappas.

The atmosphere at the event can only be described as electric and many of the revellers did as they were instructed - 'sweat till you're bet'. There was an EGM of the Sunday night crew held subsequent to the event to investigate how one or two 60's songs managed to make it into the playlist.

All was resolved at the EGM and any subsequent events will be as advertised!

Well done to the organisers who proved that they are much more than a Sunday night talk shop!

Indeed many other members/teams could take a leaf out of the book of the Sunday crew. Its often we hear the grumble that people dont use the club bar facilities because there's never anyone down there.

The Sunday crew simply text each other the 'throw in time' each week and each then knows they'll have company and will be able to spend an evening 'putting the world to rights'.

The success of the 'text a buddy' scheme is evident from the original number of 4 pals meeting up to a regular 10 to 12 every sunday night.

Why not try this with parents/members from your own team and see how quickly it takes off.
