Chairman, Nailsea Disability Initiative
Eight years ago when NDI started I wanted to
encourage independent living for disabled people in
North Somerset and help give them a voice so that they
could express their needs to the community and
achieve change in various ways. This Directory is the beginning of a new wave of
change and improvement in access for disabled
people, both residents and visitors to Nailsea. I thank
the Team for its great effort in producing a unique and
valuable guide for residents and visitors alike. We need your partnership in change to continue the
process. Talk to the traders about access matters.
Please take every opportunity as you move around the
offices and shops to observe, record and then tell us
where you think access improvements are needed. We
will do our best to effect change in partnership with the
business community. I commend this Access Directory to all of you and the
link within the NDI website where future changes will be
recorded. Please use them often and tell your friends.

The majority of businesses in Nailsea want people with
disabilities to share as fully as possible in all the town’s
amenities and opportunities.
It is really encouraging that so many have allowed the
Disability Access Team to assess their premises.
The result of that project – this booklet and the
corresponding website - indicates that there is still
much room for improvement but there is also a general
awareness of the need to do more to facilitate disability
access.

This booklet is at the forefront of that process and I look
forward to seeing access improvements for myself over
the coming years
The information in this publication is an aid principally
for disabled people. But it also sends a message to the
whole of North Somerset – that Nailsea is going all out
to encourage disabled people to shop here because
this is a town with good and improving access which
cares about EVERYONE, going the extra mile to
welcome and assist them.
I commend and congratulate the team for its
persistence and hard work. They have been
encouraged by Town Council, Chamber of Trade and
funded by the Big Lottery and I thank everyone,
including Nailsea's business community, who has
supported them.

INTRODUCTION
Nailsea Disability Initiative is a registered, self funding
local charity run by volunteers.
We provide a disability information, advice and assis-
tance service, raising awareness of disability equality
issues, including access, in the North Somerset com-
munity.
NDI aims to make Nailsea THE NORTH SOMERSET
TOWN where disabled people choose to shop. Why?
Because over time, access to NAILSEA’S shops,
offices and leisure facilities has gradually improved
through increased awareness of the need to help
disabled people.
NDI is encouraging and assisting businesses towards
further improvements so that everyone benefits through
increased trade because of easy access. Owners of
some individual shops and businesses have already
made exceptional access provision for people with dis-
abilities.
We hope further improvements under Equality Act 2010
guidance (formerly the Disability Discrimination Act) on
access to goods, facilities and services will be
implemented with alterations to premises.

We hope, too, that traders will want to improve access
simply because it is right to do it.
Street and pavement infrastructure is also improving –
there are many more dropped kerbs and crossings.
Getting to and around the town is somewhat easier
today although there is still much more to do in the built
environment.
If you are disabled or a carer this pocket sized directory
is for YOU. We hope it helps you plan safe and acces-
sible shopping trips to NAILSEA, wherever you live.
The printed directory focuses on most frequently used
shops and services in central NAILSEA. Our web site
will, over time, expand to include many of the initial
omissions and will include updates on existing entries.

HOW TO USE THE ACCESS
DIRECTORY
Please read all of this section first to gain most benefit:
The directory is based on facts and
measurements. Except in a few unavoidable
situations, judgements have not been made.
See page(s) 16-19 for car parks and disabled car
spaces if you are coming to Nailsea for the first
time.
Clevedon Road car park becomes full very early in
the week day so consider using one of the other
three.
Please measure and note down the width of your
wheel chair or mobility scooter as it may determine
how easily you will gain access to some premises.
Pages 20 to 94 list shops and service providers
alphabetically within each alphabetic category.

Unless stated to the contrary, assume the following for each premise:

The ground floor is flat and the surface appears safe and appropriate for walking and
wheel chairs

STOCKWAY SOUTH - 11 disabled spaces outside
Tower House medical centre and public toilets
(including disabled toilet) on the RIGHT having entered
the car park.
Access to Somerset Square, about 100 metres is via
the pavement in front of the medical centre, up a slight
slope then RIGHT the library.
For access to Colliers Walk and Crown Glass Place go
RIGHT from disabled space then LEFT via a wide
passage between Boots Opticians and Britannia, about
90 metres.
LINK ROAD - 10 disabled spaces close to the Waitrose
supermarket wall to the far LEFT, driving from the
entrance to the car park. Level access to Somerset
Square – about 150 metres is via the Waitrose path and
onwards. Go immediately LEFT for access to High
Street.

For access to Colliers Walk and Crown Glass Place
continue across Somerset Square then go LEFT down
the steps at the Pharmacy or use ramp.
STATION ROAD - 10 disabled spaces behind Mendip
Carpets.
Access to High Street is to the RIGHT across the
service road then via a choice of alleys, about 60
metres.
Iceland and a row of small shops are opposite the car
park across Station Road, about 30 metres.
There are 3 more spaces at the opposite end at the
rear of the Factory Shop.
CLEVEDON ROAD -10 disabled spaces, 2 by the
pedestrian ramp, 4 opposite recycling bins and 4 to the
LEFT on entering the car park.
For access to Somerset Square, about 150 metres, go
up the pedestrian ramp to the traffic lights at Stockway
North, cross to enter the Precinct area via Clevedon
Walk, a wide covered passage.

PUBLIC TOILETS RADAR KEY INFORMATION The National Key Scheme offers disabled people
independent access to over 8,000 locked public toilets
around the country (see www.radar.org.uk for further
information)
Nailsea’s public toilets are situated at Stockway South
next to the car park and Tower House Medical Centre.
There are disabled toilet facilities here which you can
access with a radar key, currently priced at £3.50 and
available at Nailsea Disability Initiative, 10 Crown Glass
Place.

Jubilee Stone Wood Nature Reserve and
Badgers Wood (in Backwell)
Backwell Environment Trust has two nature
Reserves on either side of the road up
Cheston Combe from Backwell Church.
Jubilee Stone Wood Nature Reserve is on the
left as you ascend and Badgers Wood on the
right. Both have disabled access to view
points with associated parking spaces and
we are very keen that they are used.
Ascending Cheston Combe from Backwell
Church and Church Town, Badgers Wood can
be accessed from a single car parking space
on the right towards the top of the climb. This
connects directly onto the road and is very
obvious. Continuing up past this point there is
a left hand bend and the road levels out.

The Post Office confusingly calls this flat bit
“Backwell Hill”. Look out for a concealed
Entrance on the left about 150 yards along
the flat bit and about 100 yards before the T
junction with “Backwell Hill Road”. Turn very
sharply into this entrance and you will find a
wooden barred gate. There may be a chain
but the gate is not locked and indeed may be
open.
Drive through the gate and swing left into a
two space car park with a notice board. Do
not park on the access track.
The path to the Jubilee Stone viewpoint is
about 300 metres long but there are
Strategically placed rest benches along the
route.
