Horsing AroundEvery year, the fift grade classes held a big softball game and talent

show. This year, Amy and Carmen decided to enter the talent show.Since their team was the Mustangs, the girls decided to dance in a horsecostume. Amy would be the front half and Carmen the back half.

They spent an entire weekend making a papier-mâché horse's head.

Carmen's dad sewed the body from fleecy brown cloth. The girls madethe mane and tail out of thick black yarn. Amy's mom helped them learn

a dance to a song called "Plains Pony."At last it was the day of the show. But as the girls nervously

galloped onto the softball diamond, they heard giggling from theaudience. Someone caned, "Hey, Horsey! You forgot something'"Carmen gasped, "Oh, no!" Peeking out from the horse's head,Amy saw something black near home plate. Their tail!

"What wil we do?" Carmen whispered. Amy replied,"We'll pretend we planned it this way!" The next timethey passed home plate, they dan.ced around the tail

and Amy snatched it up. Then she and Carmen

danced backwards off the field, shaking theirhooves to the music as Amy waved goodbye

with the taiL. The audience applaudednoisily, screaming with laughter.

Alexa hadn't meant to break the bowL. In fact, she'd

always loved that china bowl and its pretty blue pattern. But

she had broken it, and all week she'd listened with dread for the

phone call she knew would come. It would be Mrs. Holabird, their neighbor, calling to tell her mother about the accident.

The Holabirds had no children of their own, so they wereespecially fond of Alexa. She had been helping Mrs. Holabirdwith chores for about two years. When they went out of town,

the Holabirds always paid Alexa to cat-sit for Misty. Alexawould come twice a day and refill Misty's food and water bowls.

She usually stayed for a while, holding the big, silky cat on herlap and scratching her behind the ears. Sometimes she helpedMisty exercise. It was fun to toss a ball or a catnip mouse intothe air and watch the fat, fluff cat leap and grab for it with herpaws. How was she tû know that lVlisty would crash into the

bowl and knock it off its stand?Alexa had been so horrified that she had hidden the

broken pieces under the sideboard. She went home andfearfully awaited the phone calL. But three days later it stillhad not come, even though the Holabirds had returned two

days ago.

On the fourth morning, Alexa awoke with her mind madeup. She put on her coat and walked to the front door, callng,

"Mom, I need to go see Mr. and Mrs. Holabird."

Read the following passage. Then complete the activity on page 117.

Space Shuttle Science

The space shuttle has many importantuses. One use is for scientific research. Inthe weightless environment of space, scientists can carry out experiments theycannot do on Earth.

Inside the shuttle is a complete researchlaboratory called Spacelab. Spacelab isdivided into two parts. One part is inside, where scientists can work. The other isoutside and holds telescopes and otherinstrments that need to be exposed tospace.

Most experiments take place in theinner section. Scientists on the space shuttle

tyically do experiments that make use of

micrograviry and weightlessness. They makenew materials, such as crystals and silicon chips, and they also create

medicines. Scientists even use themselves as test subjects, recordinghow weightlessness affects the human body.

Experiments in the outside section of Spacelab take advantageof being outside Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere helps preventradiation from reaching Eart, but it also makes radiation hard tostudy. Being outside the aL'1osphere also lets scientists use

telescopes to get a clearer "view" of space.
