1. Read the prologue and answer the questions.

2. Read the summaries for Act I, Scenes 1-4.

3. Then, close-read Scene 5 on your own. (Suggested: annotate or take notes). Answer the

questions on Scene 5.

4. Look at the images from the two video clips of Romeo & Juliet. Discuss each of the

directors’ choices and how Juliet was portrayed in each clip. Then fill out the comparison

chart.

Prologue: (A prologue or prologue is an opening to a story that establishes the context and gives background details, often some earlier story that ties into the main one, and other miscellaneous information.)

As you view the same scene from different film versions of Romeo & Juliet, take notes in the following graphic organizer (on the last page) to explore how the directors use theatrical elements to interpret the scene. These elements include costumes, makeup, props, set (the place where the action takes place, objects, such as furniture). You will also observe how each director portrays Juliet in each version of the film. This could be identifying acting choices, (gestures, movement, physical appearance, personality, tone of voice, etc.) Directions: Write down in the chart what you observe in the designated boxes based on each film clip. Film 1: Director Zeffirelli (1968)

Juliet gets dragged off to meet this handsome man that her mother would like to set her up with.

Romeo grabs Juliet’s attention again.

He tries to kiss her and convincer her to kiss him.

Then others begin to notice Romeo and the fact that he is a Montague.

Romeo kisses Juliet, but she is concerned about her mother seeing.

Juliet is told that Romeo is a Montague – her family’s mortal enemy. Romeo also realizes she is a Capulet.
