Although there is an age restriction on the purchase of some of these games and on-line activities, we do understand that parents make the decision as to what is viewed in their homes. The school has a part though, when the content of these games comes to school and is shared with other students and has an impact on them. After receiving a number of reports last week, we have investigated these games and have found that they do have themes that contain horror, violence, killing and shock content. We want to share this information to ensure that parents are aware of the content of some of the games presently being shared amongst students. We are seeking support as the content is not something we want young students to be subject to at school. This is an extract from the “1997, Bringing them Home” report and resonates with us to highlight our way forward. As a school we have registered with the “Closing the Gap” institute, led by Cathy Freeman that promotes the need for improvement in Literacy skills for all students, especially our Aboriginal students. On the 6 th June, next Tuesday, students are invited to wear mufti clothing in the colours of either: Red, Black and Yellow, or all colours together. We ask that students bring a gold coin donation that we will be sending to the “Closing the Gap” institute. We look forward to a great day and will add photo’s to next week’s newsletter.

30th May 2017 Term 2 - Week 6

Welcome to week 6. What a wonderful assembly we had on Friday. It was exciting to see the learning that is happening in the classrooms. It was also fabulous to see many of our parents come along to share these events. Our students demonstrated outstanding Nana Glen Public School manners in listening to awards and respectfully acknowledging these achievements. It is great to see how proud they are of their peers efforts.

I have an important matter that has come to the attention of staff that we are asking parental support with. It has been reported that some of our students are playing on-line, violent -games, that contain horror and distressing themes.

Last Friday was National Sorry Day and we would like to acknowledge our Aboriginal students, families and the elders past and present from Nana Glen. Last week four staff members participated in the Connecting to Country training. It was with great respect that we listened with open hearts to the many stories of members of the Gumbaynggirr nation.

On the 6th June, next Tuesday, students are invited to wear mufti clothing in the colours of either: Red, Black and Yellow, or all colours together. Life Education Van – We just wanted to inform parents that there were some difficulties with the van last week so we have arranged for the van to return on the last week of school and all lessons will be repeated to ensure that all content was covered. We thank the Van organisers for this as they also wish to maintain the high standards of this essential service.

Next Monday is our School Athletics Carnival. The canteen and P&C will be holding their usual BBQ and cake stall. If you have donations of baked goods, could you please send them in on the day. As we have nut allergies and students requiring Gluten Free goods, could you please notify us if the goods are nut free and Gluten free friendly. The P&C will also be looking for volunteers on the day. Please let Doreen know in the canteen if you can help out.

The next big event is the Local Rodeo where the P&C are putting on the canteen. Volunteers and offers of baked goods are also needed for this day. Also, don’t forget our Disco needs helpers too! Thank you in advance to all parents who put in so much time to help. We have a great team! Have a great week!

What’s going well in Class 4/5 It has been an incredible start to Term 2 in Class 4/5. Students have been productive inside and out of the classroom. We have had a visit from Healthy Harold and the Life Education Van. We participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time and were treated to the author Tony Wilson reading his book The Cow Tripped Over the Moon. We contributed 26 mouthfuls towards the Big Vegie Crunch which saw 27,858 students participate nationally and 5,033 in other activities (If you can figure out the combined total I will hand out a Smiley Award to you!). Our Narrative and imaginative writing has been going well with stories in the peer feedback and publishing stages of completion. So

much done and were only half way!
