P&C Special Food Day
Welcome to Week 2. Another busy week ahead of us. You might notice some changes to routine as we refine
processes to ensure we maximise learning time and limit disruptions. Starting this week, students will still line up in
the line up area of a morning but only on Monday mornings will we have our mini assembly to announce birthdays,
give messages, hand out class awards etc. Every other morning teachers will take students straight to class. The bell
will go at 9:20am and students will be expected to line up in their class lines efficiently and in an orderly fashion. At
the end of other breaks students will head straight to their classrooms and line up outside their classroom door.
These changes have been explained to students. There will be an adjustment period, then the routine will be
expected to be part of our school routine.
Could I please reinforce to parents that the first point of call in the school is the front office. Parents coming to
collect students in the afternoon should wait in the COLA area. This is a great time to meet new parents and catch
up. Students walk up with their teachers and are collected from this area.
The P&C have two very big events coming up and they really need support for these events. Thank you to the many
people who have already put up their hands to help with either organisation, setting/packing up, working on the
day, baking etc… All these jobs bring together the whole event. The P&C still need 6 more people for the days. If you
can help, please let your P&C delegates or the office know.
We are still looking for a couple more people to assist on the Charity Golf Day in Coffs Harbour on 24 May to support
Cooper Hill and his Family, and the Leukemia Foundation. If you can assist to sell tickets, please let me know.
Another school raffle will occur this term to support Coopers family with ongoing costs. The SRC will start advertising
this next week and tickets will go out. Mr Hade and students are still collecting the 10c bottles to add to the support
for Cooper so if you have bottles please bring them in for Mr Hade. Thank you to the parents who have been
assisting and to those who have also cashed in their bottles and then brought in monetary donations. Every little bit
helps, and the family are very appreciative of the assistance. It has been wonderful to recently see Cooper linked up
with his kindergarten class. This is such an important link for both Cooper and his classmates.
Last week in the media, a new research was announced on the amount of screen time that is suitable for young
children. It outlined that research has shown that too much screen time can affect students developmentally. This
does not say that we need to race out and destroy our electronic gadgets. It does say though that little ones under 2
should have no screen time and children between 3-18 years should have no more than two hours a day with this
being a gradual time increase after introduction. This study was referring to both computer and television time when
they refer to screen time. The study encouraged parents and educators to consider more hands on and outside
activities. It is certainly food for thought for all of us, especially in light of students accessing social media.
Good luck to our students heading to Cross Country this Friday. We know they are all ready and fit as they have been
eagerly training with Mr Mitchell and Mrs Eberstadt in the mornings. As we always say, the result on the day is
always a reflection of the effort that has been put in before the day. It was so lovely to hear how excited our kids
were to see their improvement from last year with many saying, “I improved because I have been training and I
challenged myself.” Nothing comes without a bit of challenge! Have a great day kids and we look forward to hearing
about your stories and successes.
Last week notes were sent home to research lunches. Please be assured that this is not a personal research or one to
judge. There is no individual identification and all data collected is anonymous. It is in conjunction with the Healthy
Canteen initiative and trying to see what kids do like to eat in their lunches. All notes should now have been
returned indicating yes or no to your child’s involvement in the research. Please return by tomorrow.
Have a great week.

Premier’s Reading Challenge The PRC student site is available again this year! Students can search for books to read, add books to their reading
logs, and track their progress throughout the challenge. You can find the site at Premier's Reading Challenge Student
Site and there is a useful help video available to demonstrate how the site works.
Stewart House Stewart House is having their annual donation drive and envelopes have gone home today. If you are able to make a
$2.00 donation, please put the money in the envelop and return it to school by 22 May 2019.

What’s going well in class 4/5 Year 4/5 ended Term 1 with their Minecraft presentations. All students gave a 10 minute presentation
demonstrating their learning of materials, the how and why they chose materials for certain aspects and
how they could change or manipulate different materials. They did an amazing amount of learning,
collaboration and reflection and every student should be very proud of what they achieved.
Term 2 has seen our class start with 2 new exciting learning journeys. Students will be studying Bridge to
Terabithia with Mrs Happ as their literacy focus. The students put their creative hats on and constructed
toothpick bridges as an introduction activity to our literacy theme. Once completed, the bridges proved to
be a wonderful tool for students to reflect on their design choices and discuss the importance of correct
angle use in bridge construction. Tuesday continues to be hands on science learning with students creating
Rube Goldberg machines (think of the game Mouse Trap). The challenge this term is to use 2 different
types of forces to move a ball exactly 1 metre. Week 1 saw students using the Blue bots and Dash robots to
revisit their coding skills. These robots are from the STEMShare kit that our school was lucky enough to
book for this term. Our class will move onto the WeDo Lego as the basis for their Rube Goldberg machines.
We encourage parents to talk to their children about the learning that they are engaging with each day.

P&C News Hi Everyone,
Well Term 2 is well and truly moving on, so here is an update on what your P & C has going on this term.
The canteen roster for Term 2 is attached, there has been some updates to it, so please ensure you check when you
are rostered on.
Remember, if you are not able to attend on your rostered day, it is up to you to arrange someone to cover you. Kelly
our new Canteen Expert is not available until half way through June, so we need people to step up and assist until
Kelly is up and going again. Ideally, several people need to know how the canteen works, so several people can stand
in, if needed. So if your free and not on the roster, please see one of the P & C members.
Less people = rostered on more often, More people = rostered on less often.
Our first item on the calendar this term is the Mothers Day Staff, tomorrow, Wednesday 8th May. There will be a
stall for all the kids to purchase something for their Mums’. Price will be $1-50 per item through to around $8-00 per
item.
The Far North Coast and Mid North Coast Cross Country Carnivals’ are fast approaching, Friday 24th May is the
first carnival and we are in need of volunteers to assist with the running of the day. We specifically need
volunteers on the Thursday afternoon (23rd) to assist with taking items and supplies to the Equestrian Centre and
getting set up for the following morning. And again on Friday afternoon to take all the items back to the School
Canteen.
