Introduction
This Neighbourhood Action Plan (NAP) has been developed for Hazel Grove and Marple by Stockport Homes in partnership with customers, services and organisations working and living in the area. The Neighbourhood is located within Stockport Homes’ East Area Housing Team and is managed by a Neighbourhood Housing Officer (NHO), contact details are below.
NAPs are developed in order to identify the key issues in a neighbourhood and to develop actions to address these issues. NAPs can cover a range of social, economic and environmental issues, which includes housing, the environment, community safety, leisure and access to services and facilities. It has been developed in partnership with customers and partners living and working within the neighbourhood.
The NAP covers a number of dispersed housing areas in the vicinity of Vale Close, Bosden Fold, Hibbert Lane, Hazel Grove and Edwards Way, Marple and a number of dispersed properties in Compstall. Stockport Homes manage 668 properties, including 151 flats, 322 houses, 37 maisonettes, 96 bungalows and 62 studios. In addition there are three Sheltered Accommodation Schemes within Hazel Grove and Marple, a number of garage units, play and landscaped areas within the neighbourhood.
Hazel Grove and Marple lie to the east of Stockport Town Centre and are two distinctive neighbourhoods. Hazel Grove is a predominantly residential area and is one of Stockport’s eight district shopping centres. The main A6 road runs through the centre of Hazel Grove, connecting to Manchester City

Centre and the Peak District. Hazel Grove has one railway station served by the Manchester to Sheffield line, and a direct rail link into Manchester City Centre and the Peak District. Within the neighbourhood is Stepping Hill Hospital, providing services to approximately 350,000 people, the hospital has an Accident and Emergency department, maternity unit and a psychiatric unit, it is found along the A6 between Great Moor and Hazel Grove. Hazel Grove has a number of local primary schools and a High School.
NAPs are influenced by a range of existing polices, strategies and action plans at national, regional and local levels. The information used to develop the plan links to Stockport Council’s strategic plans and supports Place and People strategic objectives. The NAP has been developed by analysing data about the area, looking at current and developing policies and plans in the area, results of consultation with customers and talking to other partners and services about their plans for their areas.
Neighbourhood Activity 2010 - 2011 A range of projects have been delivered in the neighbourhood over the last 12 months. This has included physical improvements to properties and within the neighbourhood, in addition to a programme of activities and events throughout the year. Regular updates have been made to customers through the Neighbourhood Newsletters, and this will continue throughout this year.
The following highlights the key areas of activity of the last 12 months in Hazel Grove and Marple:
• A programme of community clean ups and estate walkabouts across the neighbourhoods with partners and residents, including Farndon Avenue, Bosden Hall Road, Catherine Street and Edwards Way Marple
• A programme of kitchen and bathroom replacements have been completed
• Area Forum held in Marple which identified need to improve areas including Park Bungalows and Cotefield Close, subsequently the NHO has undertaken estate walkabouts
• Works to improve communal external landscaped areas, access new recycling bins and garage improvements were carried out on Catherine Street, Hazel Grove
• Works started to provide a new play area at Bean Leach Road, Hazel Grove supported by funding from Play England, Stockport Council and Stockport Homes
• Improvement works to the rear of Cotefield Road, Marple to remove unused greenhouses and undertake a community clean up
• Bramhall Moor Lane, improvement implemented to provide additional car parking to alleviate concerns of residents
• Erncroft Road, works undertaken to improve community safety to provide gates and fencing.

Neighbourhood and Customer Profiles
This section provides a profile of the area covered by the NAP, including information on population, households, ethnicity and employment. The majority of properties within the NAP are located in two wards, Marple South and Hazel Grove and are covered by two Area Committees Stepping Hill and Marple.
The following information provides data on customers living within the Hazel Grove and Marple areas. Of the 662 Stockport Homes customers which data is held living in the neighbourhood, 4.23% are from a Black Minority Ethnic (BME) background. Of the 662 customers who have supplied disability and aged information, 25.08% have indicated a disability, which is the second highest percentage of customers living within Stockport Homes’ properties, 40.18% of customers are aged 65 and over, the second highest neighbourhood managed by Stockport Homes, and conversely a lower percentage of customers aged 16-24.
Stockport Homes’ customers are involved in many ways to ensure that all customers have the chance to get involved and influence the decisions and services received that affect their home and neighbourhood. Within the neighbourhood there are no active Tenants’ and Residents’ Associations, however there are a number of key customers who regularly attend the many activities and events that customers get involved in.
