It had been known for a long time that the plans involved cutting an entrance on the left-hand s i.dc of t:-0.e cab, there having previously been a doorway on ono s ide only. The Q.G.R. celebrated its centenary on 31st July. The Neilson 0-4-2 tender loco no.6, • the oldest working loco in Australia, travelled under its O':ID st ean 256 rri.Le s to Ipswich to haul two four-wheel coaches thence to Grand.cliestcr to re-enact tl1e opening ceremony. This loco had been specially bo rr-owed back f'r-on its present ovmers, Bingera Sugar Estate ( see previous page). Several connecting trains ran fro::1 Brisbane for the ceremony; the first with a 4-8-2+2-8-4-Garratt and 11 coaches; the second, a B18* class 4-6-2, no 1089,; the last st ean loco built for the QG-R, and 11 coaches; the third train was diesel-hauled,,. and the last was hauled by two diesels and nade up of the SUHL.ANDER air-conditioned stock. PUFFING BILLY PRESERVA'I'ION SOCIETY 2 Victoria. Gauge 2ft Sin 4

The former Upper Ferntree Gully-Gcnbrook line of the Victorian Ra.i Lway s was re-opened • a further 2f n.i.Les f'r ou Iienz i.ee Creek to Emer-a.Ld on 31st July. This gives a total length in operation of 6n 17ch f'r-on Belgrave to Ene.ra.Ld , The 3 mi.Les f'r on Upper Ferntree Gully to Belgrave were widened to 5ft 5in gauge in 1958-62. The Irrtended upper terminus is Lakeside, some three oiles beyond Ener-a.Ld ; the track onwards froo Lakeside to Gem.brook was lifted some years ago. •

THE END OF THE 1106ru:i GAUGE. 140 years-·of history cane to an end on 51st December' with the closure of the colliery line fron :Sreitenschti.tzing (on the nain line between Linz and Salzburg) to Wolfsegg and Kohlgrube ( which means "coal-pit", but is appar ei tly also the name of a village) • This line was the last in Austria to use the gauge of 1:lOfam ( .Sft 6in Austrian ncasur-e , == 3ft 7~in British), vrh.i.ch was originally adopted in 1825 for the first railway in Austria, the horse-operated line f'r-on I,inz to Budwo i,s (now Ceskc Budejovice). The Bremt.cnschutzing to Koh Igrubo lino, 11.6lm long, was opened on 8 J:ay 1854, and s bcan traction was introduced in 1871, a third-rail then being laid along the riain line for 7.4k~ to Laubach, to join the Lambach-Cuiinden line, nhich was al so 110600 gauge until 1905, though the Linz-Lm1bo.ch section had been st andar-d-cgaugcd in 1859, and Linz-Budweis had been replaced by stanctard-gaugo in 1872. The Brcitenschiit,zing-Lanbach third rail was rc­ noved in 1879. This last r ernran t f'r-on ·Brc itenschi.itzing to Kohlgrubc had not been stean­ worked since 1956. Latterly most of the coal fron tre tri.ne s , which arc a.lrro st worked out, has gone by road, rui.d the railnay has required a train only about once a fortnight, worked by a Diesel loco acquired in 1956 an d designed for easy conversion to standard-gauge for use elsewhere. In past years, a private p2,ssengcr service also oporntod; coach A.3, built 1854 was still in occasional use only a few yos,rs ago and is destined for a nuseum.

Kohlgrubo was al.so the b eg inrri.ng of a 4kr.'.1-long line of 58cn (1ft 101in) gauge to Gschwendt, which is already closed e::mopt for a short section giving access +o a drift­ nine which is expected to close s.1 ortly. On this line arc one diesel loco ( Je:qbach 1565, /57) and one bnttory loco (Ar!:G 294/41).

These two c ar s vrerc built in 1957 for the C.F.Depo.rteuento.ux do lo.. Dordoe;ne, as nos 608 and 610; retaining the sane nunbers. they later werrt to the Voies Fcrr&cs d :rnt6rct Local, rcse0,t1 du Pas de Calais, and then in• 1956 to the TC.
