SUMMARY

Dear Friends,

We are hereby presenting the Annual Report of our activities for the

period April 2016 to March 2017.

We have incorporated all the activities of NAB, India in Mumbai and its

surrounding areas, as well as those being operated beyond Mumbai. You

will notice, during the reporting period we have introduced many

innovative activities apart from our routine ones.

We express and place on record our deep gratitude towards our

Members, our Well-wishers and Volunteers and our Donors – both

Individual and Corporate – for their continuous invaluable support,

without which we wouldn’t have been able to go ahead with our new

programs and our mission, on the whole.

The NAB Advocacy Department aims at making difference in the lives of the visually

impaired (VI) in Mumbai and eventually at the national level. For this reason, several

measures were initiated to convince the general community about the need for

treating the VI on an equal footing with the sighted.

During this period 33 Visually Challenged Persons were provided assistance through

NAB Advocacy Department on their personal, education, employment and property

related issues.

The Department was involved in the following activities: • Liaisoning with Govt. Departments and other authorities.

• Counseling clients, their parents and family. • Handling local, state and national-level issues on accessibility, employment,

education, need for new disability law in accordance with UNCRPD and policy change in general.

• Disseminating information on benefits available to the visually impaired (VI) through Government and NGOs.

• Organizing legal help.

• Advocacy for Protection of Legal and Human Rights. • Any other assistance after ascertaining the genuineness of the need of the VI

individual. Consultation Meet/Workshop on Amendments to the RPD Act, 2016

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 has been enacted on 28th December,

2016 and the Central Government has invited Rules under the said Act. In this connection, NAB Advocacy Department has organized one Consultation Meet on 4th March 2017 to discuss and study the rules and one full day Consultation Workshop was

held on 25th March 2017. These Rules are forwarded to the Government for its proper implementation.

Free Legal Aid Centre for the Visually Impaired

The Legal Aid Cell introduced by the department has started functioning since March 5,

2016. At present Advocate Shri Siddesh Pilankar (through the kind courtesy of Adv.

Warunjikar) is visiting on 1st and 3rd Saturdays at NAB Headquarters to solve the issue

in connection with personal, employment and property matters. To-date he has

handled more than 14 cases out of which 3-4 cases were closed down and remaining

are in process.

Other Activities

Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for currency and coins in hon’ble High Court

It was observed and brought to the notice by the visually impaired persons that new

notes which have come in the market were not easily being identified viz.

denominations of Rs. 20/-, Rs. 500/- & Rs. 1000/- notes etc.

Three hearings were held in this matter and it is still in process and the honorable High Court has directed Reserve Bank of India to look into this matter. The next hearing will be held in the month of April 2017.

Release of Book on ‘Compilation of Landmark Judgements on Persons with

Disability Act, 1995 with Special Reference to Visually Challenged Persons’ The Department had organized a One Day Awareness & Sensitization Workshop for

Practicing Advocates of Mumbai High Court and Maharashtra on 24th September 2016

at NAB Headquarters, Mumbai. Hon’ble Retd. Chief Justice Mohit Shah was the Chief

Guest for the function. He inaugurated the Workshop and released a book ‘Compilation

of Landmark Judgments of Persons with Disability Act, 1995 with Special Reference to

Visually Challenged Persons’. This Book was published in Print, Braille and Audio

Format and distributed amongst participant Advocates and all NAB State Branches.

This workshop was basically on PWD Act 1995 and National Trust Act, 1999. Advocate

Shri Uday Prakash Warunjikar and many well-known senior Advocates participated in

this Workshop.

Meetings on different Committees of Government

• Meeting with the National Handicapped Finance & Development Corporation

(NHFDC) to discuss the loan sanction received from various districts of Maharashtra.

• Meeting with DRUCC, Western Railway and Railway Authorities regarding Online Identity Cards and different issues faced by visually challenged while travelling in train.

• Attended Job Identification committee meeting on 2 occasions called by Ministry of social Justice and special assistance.

SENSITIZATION PROGRAMMES

In the month of August 2016 two Sensitization programmes were held for AAHAR

Restaurants in joint collaboration with FRC Department.

Sensitization programme for Western Railways was held at NAB Headquarters for

Online Cards.

1) Camp for provision of Railway Identity Cards and Online Tickets. 2) The Chief Guest Retd. Chief Justice Mohit Shah felicitating Adv. Uday Warunjikar. 3) The Chief Guest releasing print editions of the book “Compilation of Landmark Judgments on Persons with Disability Act, 1995” along with President Bhaskarbhai Mehta & HSG Satya Kumar Singh 4) Felicitation of Adv. Jamshed Mistry by the Chief Guest & President Prof. Bhaskar Mehta

NAB Sir J. Duggan Braille Press produced 1,36,107 volumes running into 88,02,311

braille pages during the year. These included text books, periodicals and general

literature. The Braille Press also received sponsored orders for production and free

distribution of several general books/magazines, to institutions for the Blind in India.

Significant Developments:

1. Installation of an Automatic High Speed Computerised Braille Embosser – Braillo

650 SW received through the financial assistance from the Government of India under their Central Sector Scheme of “Support for

Establishment/Modernization/Capacity Augmentation of Braille Presses”.

2. Procured 4 Braille Displays “Braille Edge 40” through the generous donation

received from General Insurance Corporation of India.

Highlights: Supplied Braille textbooks from Std I to Std VIII to 57 districts (44 Zilla Parishad Offices

and 13 Municipal Corporation Offices) of Maharashtra state i.e. 3114 sets running into 17413 copies and 31,87,989 pages under Maharashtra Prathamik Shikshan Parishad MPSP

Project. This project was completed within the specified timeframe.

Supplied Braille Dummy Ballot Papers and Numeric Stickers to 227 Prabhag of Bruhanmumbai Mahanagar Palika Elections held in February 2017.

Braille Production and Distribution

NAB Braille Press published 29 New Titles – 15 Textbooks and 14 General Books in Hindi, Marathi and English and 101 magazines in Hindi, English and Marathi.

Sponsorship was received for production and free distribution of Five General Books (520 copies).

NAB Sir J. Duggan Braille Press

101 issues of 8 braille magazines (Hindi, English and Marathi) 74,382 copies of which were supplied to 2950 blind subscribers.

900 copies of NAB Dindarshika 2017 were supplied to blind individuals and

institutions for the blind all over India at subsidized cost. 22,416 copies of textbooks were supplied to Schools for the Blind and blind individuals.

30 Schools/Institutions for the Blind in Maharashtra were supplied textbooks from Std

I to Std XII (Marathi Medium & English Medium) benefitting thousands of blind children.

1343 copies of general books were supplied to blind individuals/organizations.

544 blind individuals availed textbooks, general books Braille slate paper from our Braille Press.

The Braille Press provided subsidy on all English and Marathi Medium Textbooks of Std I to Std XII and also general literature/periodicals are provided at subsidized cost.

Other Services: Membership of the Sobhi El-Ejel Memorial Braille Library stood at 162.

Braille Printing papers worth Rs.3,57,610/- were supplied to blind individuals /

organizations. The NAB Sir J. Duggan Braille Press acknowledges with thanks the support of the

sponsors – Reliance Foundation for the Braille magazine “Reliance Drishti” Hindustan Prachar Sabha for the Braille magazine “Hindustani Zubaan” and Ms. Upasana Makati

for “White Print” in braille, and General Insurance Corporation of India for generously donating the Four Braille Displays.

The NAB M. P. Shah All India Talking Book Centre recorded 243 new titles -

comprising general literature, novels, magazines and academic books - in English,

Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati - taking the total number of titles available to 4,950.

16,031 Talking Book CDs were dispatched all over the country to individual and institutional members of our Library. 6,376 CDs mainly containing text books were

sold. 4,994 titles were loaded on MP3 players/mobiles, on request.

The Talking Book Library enrolled 158 new members, taking its membership strength to 2,475 (2,333 individual and 142 institutional members).

NAB M. P. Shah All India Talking Book Centre

3,650 CDs containing study material and 96 general book CDs were dispatched to 23

institutions for the visually impaired.

During this period the Recording Studio of the Centre has been renovated and new

Audio Mixer Console is installed. The Centre also has started recording Marathi

fortnightly magazine named ‘Bolke Pakshik’ from August, 2016 which is in good

demand with the members of the Library.

At the meeting of Talking Book Narrators and Listeners, held on October 27, 2016 at

the Centre, Mr. Prabhat Kumar Singh, CEO, Social Foundation, Union Bank of India

(UBI) formally handed over books recorded by the Centre during April-October 2016,

to the President of NAB, India Prof. Bhaskar Y. Mehta and Honorary Secretaries of the

Association Mr. A. S. Athalekar and Dr. Vimal Kumar Dengla. Union Bank has

sponsored the recordings of the Centre during the financial year 2016-17.

1) Mr. Arun Tiwari, Chief Managing Director, UBI presented a symbolic cheque for Rs. 37,50,000/- to Honorary Secretary of NAB, India Mr. A. S. Athalekar & HSG Satya Kumar Singh towards sponsorship for recording of audio books for the finance year 2016-17

The Client Service Department offers direct and timely assistance to visually impaired

persons for resolving their day to day issues.

Services offered:

� Counseling, guidance and referral for rehabilitation (including shelter for

destitute blind persons) vocational training and education of the VI.

� Teaching mobility & personal care.

NAB Client Service Department

� Availing travel concessions and tax exemption.

� Sale/free distribution of aids.

� Financial assistance for diverse needs.

� Mobilizing resources for self employment.

� Information dissemination about various facilities available through the Government and other voluntary organizations.

The Client Service Department collected cash donation to the tune of Rs. 2,37,400/- to

carry out its diverse activities.

Aided economic rehabilitation to 266 VCPs – including 250 Hawkers at Rs. 1,000/

each. 11 Sewing Machines & flour mill were also provided to VCP’s to initiate their

business through personal donors.

4 individuals were provided equipments sponsored by General Insurance Corporation

(GIC) of India through a generous financial support of Rs. 23,95,000 under GIC’s CSR

initiative for the financial year 2015-16.

Provided financial assistance amounting to Rs. 7,000/- to 7 VC persons, primarily to

meet their medical needs.

Educational aids given to 130 school-going children of VCPs who are in an

economically weaker position.

80 new cases of blindness were identified. CSD also offered its regular service like

issue of concession certificates, distribution of personal aids like folding cane, fiber

cane etc and other documents to 969 individuals.

Other activities included Awareness programs, Medical camps, information

dissemination on blindness related issues, observance of commemorative days like

World White Cane Day and International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In all, the

Dept. provided services to 4,519 VC clients.

1) Dental check up camp. 2) Dr. Vimal Kumar Dengla, Honarary Secretary distributing financial assistance

for diverse needs to the clients 3) Mrs. Swati Thakurdesai, Honarary Secretary distributing Educational Aid to the clients 4) Self employment through sewing machine.

Integrated Education: 90 special teachers assisted 939 (530 boys + 409 girls)

students. These children were studying in 623 regular schools and residing in 468

villages/towns from 7 States.

Braille Kits: 2105 school going blind children in 16 States were provided Braille Kits.

Out of these 2000 Braille Kits were distributed from the donations received from SBI

Life Insurance Co. Ltd.

Brailler: A Perkins brailler was donated to NAB Vile Parle Centre for Visually Impaired

Children.

Sale of Aids & Equipment: 775 individuals and 135 institutions from 20 States within

the country, besides 2 individuals from Kenya and USA took advantage of this service.

Large Print Books: 573 copies of 142 text-books running into 85868 pages to 3

institutions for the blind from 2 States.

Human Resource Development Programs: 150 individuals attended training

programs organized in different parts of the country, for itinerant and regular school

teachers, parents and volunteers.

Participation in Workshops/Seminars/Meetings: Officials of the Department

attended several workshops, seminars, meetings, etc., as participants/resource

persons and provided expertise wherever necessary.

Field Visits: Department officials visited locations where I. E. program for V.I.

children/National Program for Multi-Disabled Visually Impaired Children (MDVI)

children, are operated.

Services for Children with Visual and Additional Disabilities: 104 MDVI children

from Mumbai and its neighbouring areas were provided services under this home-

based program.

National Programme for Home-based Services to MDVI Children:

10 units catering to 77 children have been set up at 5 locations in 2 States, providing

services similar to those provided by our Home-based Programme for MDVI children in

Mumbai.

Training Centre for Teachers of the Visually Handicapped: Training for the 17th

batch of the two-year D.Ed. Special Education (VI) Course (recognized by the

Rehabilitation Council of India) commenced. Training for the 16th batch (2nd year)

continued. 8 among the 17 trainees in both batches are visually impaired.

Achievements of the children of Mumbai I. E. programme:

1. 13 children participated in the Vihang Times Sanskruti Arts Fesitval organized by

Times of India during January 12-16, 2017 at Upwan, Thane. The children participated in Solo Singing, Solo Instrument and Group Song, etc on January

13, 2017. Mr. Vijay Shenoy and Mr. Suraj Pande from Wax Hand Wizards, Mulund had a stall at festival. He had organized an experiential session on Wax Hands for our visually impaired children. The response from children was

overwhelming.

2. Mr. Bhavya Shah, studying in Std. IX, Gopi Birla Memorial School, Grant Road won 1st prize in the school inter-house Hindi Elocution Kavi Sammelan

Competition and stood second in the in-school inter house instrumental competition. He played Piano in the competition. He also received Scholastic and Co-scholastic Achievements in 2016 Best Delegate Award at Indian International

Model United Nations Conference Mumbai. He also won the Best Delegate Award at Indian International Model United Nations Conference National

Championship 2016. Winner of 4 gold medals and visual category champion at the National IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities 2016, etc.

3. Miss Roshni Patro, Std. VI, studying in Sacred Heart School, Kalyan received Best Student and Best Singer Award from the School on January 26, 2017.

4. Master Aryan Joshi, Std. X studying in IES Chandrakant Patkar English Medium

School, Dombivli stood 4th in National A Chess Championship for Visually Challenged held at Mumbai during March 3-11, 2017. He is selected for World

Chess Olympiad, representing Indian Team to be held at Macedonia, Europe in June 2017.

5. Master Krishna Sheth, Std, V, studying in Swami Vivekanand International School and Jr. College, Kandivli (W) participated in Asia’s longest Tyrolean

Traverse at Malshej Ghat, Near Nashik and crossed 1900 Ft. distance and made into Limca Book of Record.

6. Miss Drishti Gaba, Std. IX, a totally blind girl studying in Mumbai I. E.

Programme acted in the advertisement of Samsung Service Van – Samsung

Cares.

7. Ved Vasudeo Pratisthan, organization in Pune had conducted a essay competition of V. I. Children from the Districts of Pune, Mumbai and Raigadh on December 3, 2016 on the occasion of World Disabled Day. The competition was

held in two groups, i.e. group 1 for Std. VIII to X and other group of Std. XI and onwards. From Mumbai I. E. Programme 3 students (Std. VIII to X) sent their

essays in Marathi for the competition. The topic of the essay was “Maza Jivan Sangharsh: Ek Satyakathan – Maze Dheya”. All three students won the prizes. Mr. Prathmesh Dalvi, Std. X won First prize of Rs. 1500/-, Mr. Akhilesh Kambli,

Std. X won Second prize of Rs. 1250/- and Mr. Deven Sonar, Std. VIII won consolation prize of Rs. 250/-.

Other Activities: A number of camps, picnics, excursions, parents meetings, annual

sports, annual get-togethers, etc. were organized for children in I.E. program and

those in Home-based |Program for MDVI in Mumbai and its adjoining areas.

The following activities were organized under Mumbai I. E. Programme:

Mathematics Education Project: 5 Mathematics Teachers provided services to 56 V.

I. children studying from Standard VI to X under “Mission Shiksha” project.

Publications brought out: Reprint of 3rd edition of Hindi title “Drishtibadhitonka

Shikshan Tatha Punrarvasan: Prarambha Va Vikas”.

1) Workshop on Clay Modeling for Students of Mumbai IEP. 2) Workshop on Braille Codes on Science and Maths. 3) NAB Department of Education organized a one day workshop for parents of MDVI children at Hitvardhini Sabha Centre, Thane. 4) Annual sports for MDVI Children.

The NAB Department of Employment provides gainful occupation to visually

challenged individuals through their placement in open employment or by offering

them the support for self employment. The Department registered 117 job aspirants

and placed 55 under open and self-employment. Referrals were also offered to many

visually challenged persons to Government and Private Undertakings.

Enhancing Employability Skills:

Competitive Examinations and Pre-Employment training sessions were organized which

benefitted individuals appearing for various job interviews and competitive exams,

under the VEER Campaign of American India Foundation. These individuals were

placed in various job sectors.

Banking Classes – From September 19, 2016 to October 31, 2016 ‘Competitive Exam

Training’ and ‘English Speaking’ was conducted from Monday to Thursday from 10.00

a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

NAB Kaikhushroo J. Chinoy Centre for Prevention of Blindness and Low Vision

In this year department also took up the activity of sensitization for the staff of Hotel

Industry at the camps organized with AHAR, A parent organization for Hotel Industry

in Maharashtara.

The Keratoplsty target is still achieved by department even though the MOU with

RELIANCE FOUNDATION was signed in month of JUNE instead of APRIL, we have also

received appreciation from the beneficiaries using spectacles for providing best

qualities spectacles.

1) Eye Check up Camp for Hotel Employees with AHAR at Gold Coin Hotel in Tardeo. 2) Eye Check up Camp for Senior Citizen with Disha Foundation at Parel. 3) Eye Check up Camp for under privileged students with Women Graduates Union at Colaba.

Basic Rehab Course:

The 118th batch of the 3 ½ months Basic Rehabilitation of NAB-Department of

Rehabilitation was held from January 12-April 20, 2016. 25 trainees completed the

course. At the 119th batch which was conducted from June 8-September 14, 2016, 32

trainees completed the Basic Rehabilitation Course successfully. Intensive training was

offered in basics of life, home management, physical education, Braille, social graces

and orientation & mobility. Vocational guidance was also offered. Trainees were

involved in various other activities like lectures, competitions, sports, educational

visits, participation in festivals and social events etc. Their health and eye check-ups

were organized. Certificates and white canes were presented at the passing out

function and best performers at various competitions were awarded.

The Short-term Need-based Courses

12th Course for Teenagers/Adolescents: 39 students who had appeared for Std.X and XII examinations enrolled for this course held from April 25-June 4, 2016. Topics

covered were health & hygiene, concessions, scholarships, training courses and employment opportunities available, stress management, goal setting, social etiquette etc. Sessions on Career guidance and sex education were also offered. Educational

visits and outings were organized.

NAB Department of Rehabilitation

Vocational Trades Course: At the Vocational Trades course conducted from September 19–October 25, 2016, 19 trainees completed the course successfully. The

participants were taught to make candles (fancy and simple), agarbattis (incense sticks), imitation jewelry, phenyl, liquid soap, popcorns, chocolate making, ubtan

(face/body pack/scrub) etc. and other trades. All the 19 beneficiaries were handed over kits to commence business, from funding received for the purpose.

7th batch of the Course on All-round development of visually challenged women:

There were 14 participants for this course held from November 3-December 22, 2016. This course is designed for all-round development of blind women. Orientation &

Mobility, personal care, Braille and communication, Yoga, personality development, social etiquette, stress management, goal setting, adolescence, sex education, child-

care, self defense etc. were the subjects covered. Workshops in the making of cakes, jams, juices, sauces etc. were also organized.

Physiotherapy and Acupressure & Massage Courses

Diploma Course in Physiotherapy:

The second year of the 20th batch (2015-2017) having 4 students and first year of the 21st batch (2016-2018) having 7 students, went on simultaneously. In all there were 11 students attending the course.

Certificate course in Acupressure & Massage:

Out of the 15 students admitted to the 24th batch conducted during January-June, 11 had appeared for the examinations and 9 passed successfully. 5 students were

admitted to the 25th batch conducted during July-December. Out of these, 3 appeared for the examination and their results are awaited.

All the above courses of NAB-DOR for the financial year 2015-2016 were funded by GIC-Re, as a CSR Activity.

RUDMI AWARD Two visually challenged persons Mr. Karim Najir Jamadar, from Kolhapur district and

Mr. Deepak Raghunath Mhade, from Ratnagiri (both recommended by NAB-DOR) received the "Smt. Nandini P. Divatia Rural Rehabilitation Award for Disabled for the

Year 2016" at the hands of PUJYA BHAI SRI RAMESHBHAI OZA, (Known Kathakar & Spiritual Exponent) on Dec. 3rd, 2016 at 11.00 am. at Ahmedabad at a special ceremony organized by the RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

(RUDMI), Ahmedabad. We are pleased to report that this year NAB (I) had also been selected to receive the “INSTITUTIONAL AWARD” by RUDMI. Dr. A. K. Sharma, Vice

President, NAB (I) visited Ahmedabad on 3rd December, 2016 and received the award on behalf of NAB (I). The beneficiaries were awarded a Cheque of Rs. 15,000/- each and a Certificate. NAB(I) received a Citation and TROPHY.

Innerwheel Club of Bombay Queen's Necklace supported for renovation and restarting of OPD section of Physiotherapy. Renovated centre was inaugurated by Ms. Phalguni

The NAB Louis Braille Memorial Research Centre (LBMRC) brought out two issues

of magazine “Blind Welfare,” April 2016, August – December 2016. The Centre also

published three issues of the “NABINDIA” Newsletter and the Annual Report of NAB,

India for the year 2015-2016.

Library and Information: The library collection of books stood at 5,810. 3 persons

took advantage of the library services. Since LBMRC also functions as an information

centre, information in the field of blindness/disability and other related topics were

provided to those interested, on request.

The Centre was also involved in content writing for NAB, India website besides

updating and uploading information on the website from time to time.

The committee conducted a workshop for visually impaired persons about the use and

operation of E-Wallet. Mr. Prashant Naik of Union Bank and Mr. Sai Bhagat were the

faculties.

Demonstration and workshop of Drishti, a Mobile Phone Application developed by

Accenture, was conducted at NAB Worli Seaface office on 11-03-2017. On capturing

and sending the image of the surrounding this application will give description of the

same to the person in audio thus enabling persons of VC to understand the same. It

also has print recognition and can read printed text to the benefit of blind person.

NAB Louis Braille Memorial Research Centre

NAB State Branches Department: The Office Bearers and staff of NAB State Branches Department regularly visit NAB State and District Branches to attend their

Governing Council Meetings, acquaint themselves with the ongoing activities and

advise the Branches on development of new projects.

All the Vice Presidents of NAB, India have been visiting the NAB State Branches in their respective jurisdiction and have been reporting their progress at the Managing

Committee of NAB, India meetings.

Visits : July 13, 2016 visit to Nashik in connection with the disbursement of Self-employment

equipment to the beneficiaries of NAB District Branches in Maharashtra.

31st July to 7th August 2016 – Meeting with the Office Bearers of NAB Kerala State Branch, attended the Governing Council meeting and inaugural of rural medical camp at block panchayat.

Attended the Governing Council meeting of Tamil Nadu State Branch and visited IEDC

programme at Sethu Bhaskara Matric. Hr. Secondary School, Pudur, Ambattur. 21st to 24th November, 2016 – Attended the Governing Council Meeting of the NAB Goa

State Branch and seen the activities carried out over there.

27th February to 4th March, 2016 – visited the Activities under NAB Kerala State Branch, Meeting with Members of Governing Council and also to attend with some legal pending matters.

Visited NAB Karnataka State Branch Rural activities in Mysore and had a meeting with

the Governing Council Members of the Branch. MARCH 11 TO 13, 2017 - Visited the NAB Andhra Pradesh Branch at Secunderabad

and attended the Governing Council meeting.

The State of Andhra Pradesh is now bifurcated into a new State of Telangana and the Secunderabad city comes in this new State.

Financial Assistance

We were able to collect donations for NAB Kerala State Branch, up to Rs. 3,91,000/-

towards establishing a Vocational Training Centre for the Blind at Thiruvananthapuram

out of the donation of Rs. 10 lakh procured by us and the balance Rs. 7 lakh is towards

the procurement of Braillers and Braille kits. Further we have also procured a

donation of Rs. 30,000/- to start a Massage and Physiotherapy Centre for the visually

challenged in the NAB Andhra Pradesh State Branch [Telangana].

NAB State Branches

During the above mentioned period, NAB Finance Raising Committee (FRC) raised a

sum of Rs. 2,65,95,716/- through various sources.

• As part of fund raising drive from Schools, in and around Mumbai we raised a

sum of Rs. 30,13,704/-. Nearly 12,000 students from 49 schools in Mumbai and its outskirts participated in this program. Children’s Academy – Asha Nagar,

The Dadar Parsee Youth Assesmbly High School and Children’s Academy – Malad were the first three highest school and Bhakti Chheda of SVDD Secondary English Medium School, Dhruvi Punamia of Children’s Academy – Asha Nagar

and Parita Mule of Saraswati Secondary School were the first three students to collect the highest donation for NAB, India.

• Under the CSR scheme, NAB India benefitted in a substantial way by receiving

contributions from GIC of India, UBI - Social Foundation, ONGC, The New India

Assurance Company Ltd, SBI Life Insurance and Union Bank of India. The total amount raised were Rs. 1,70,31,307/-

• Apart from the Corporates and Schools, we received much financial support from

employees of various Kotak Mahindra Group, contribution from employees of Microsoft, RBS and Aon Service and also matching grants through CAF – India, Give India, Bill Desk & Helpyourngo.com for our various activities. The total

amount we received were Rs. 29,74,366/-

• FRC also took part in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and raised an amount of Rs. 1,94,170/-

• Give India had organized a conference in Mumbai on 27th and 28thApril, 2016,

which was attended by Umesh Deshpande and Mahesh Nair.

• FRC initiated in conducting a workshop on e-wallet and also an application to

be launched in collaboration with Accenture.

NAB Finance Raising Committee (FRC)

NAB Department of Women’s Empowerment has 75 trainees at it DWE Training Centre,

Reay Road, Mumbai.

RAKHI PROJECT: ATOOT BANDHAN

During the festive occasion of Raksha Bandhan, trainees of DWE training centre were

instrumental in making 1,00,000 rakhis.

DWE Officials and some Visually Challenged women visited the Army Head Quarters at

Colaba, Mumbai on August 18th, 2016 where a program of tying Rakhis on the wrists of

the army personnel was organized. Similar programs were organized at the Katara,

Pehalgam and Barahmulla District, Srinagar during August 25– 31, 2016.

DIWALI PROJECT:

DWE successfully completed Air India’s order of 5000 boxes through trainees and

home workers. Orders for 500 boxes from Lotus Destinations, Think Why Not

Integrated Solutions and individual order from Manger- Cargo Sale (W.I.), Air India

Ltd. were also promptly executed.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OTHER ACTIVITIES:

� Trupti Poli Bhaji Kendra (Canteen) was set up individually at Cotton Green

Complex, under DWE from April, 2016.

� Inner wheel Club of Bombay Central arranged one program at DWE Training

Centre on May 5th, 2016 for girls and distributed one Atta Chakki to DWE

Canteen and dresses along with snack were distributed to 15 Visually Challenged

trainees and regular home workers.

� DWE has arranged one Awareness Lecture on AIDS with the help of Mumbai Aids

Association for trainees, home workers and other Visually Challenged male

beneficiaries on May 7th, 2016.

� DWE has celebrated its Birthday on 18th July, 2016 with trainees and home

workers and special lunch was sponsored by a well wisher for the occasion for

the whole complex.

� 7 Visually Challenged trainees from DWE and few Home Workers were

attended the general health check up camp arranged by NAB Client Service

Department in collaboration with K. J. Somaiya Hospital and Research Centre at

Sion on December 27, 2016.

NAB Department of Women’s Empowerment (DWE)

� 7 Visually Challenged trainees from DWE training centre and few of the Home

Workers along with their family members attended the Dental Health Check up

Camp held at Cotton Green Complex, Reay Road on January 25, 2017 organized

by NAB Client Service Department with the help of Angel Dentist Network.

� Annual “Haldi Kumkum” was organized at Cotton Green Complex, Reay Road on

February 3rd, 2017.

� With the support of wellwisher 9 Visually Challenged girls from NAB Kaka Patil

Centre, Andheri went to Aurangabad for 3 days picnic during 14-16 January,

2017. The to and fro journey for these girls was arranged by plane. This was a

very pleasant and memorable experience for the girls.

� Inauguration of CD of Audio Pocket Dictionary from English to Marathi was held

at NAB Kaka Patil Centre, Andheri on 27 February, 2017.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

After needs assessments financial assistance was given to 8 Visually Challenged for

medical, educational and other domestic requirements.

DWE has provided financial assistance at Rs. 500/- each to 40 Visually Challenged

female hawkers on May 7th, 2016.

HOME VISITS:

16 home visits were taken up to observe the conditions and understand needs of

Visually Challenged women. Counselling was also offered to 10 Visually Challenged

women.

TRAINING:

Regular DWE training was going on throughout the year. With the support of RKDC

Trust, training in making of Cane wire Bags was organized by DWE at Cotton Green

Complex, Reay Road, Mumbai during March 21-22, 2017.

NEELAM KHURSHED KANGA MEMORIAL AWARDS 2017:

On NAB’s Foundation Day – January 19th, 2017 DWE honored Ms. Tanya Balsara, Ms.

Kritica Purohit and Ms. Minal Singhvi with the N. K. Kanga Memorial Awards. Instituted

in the memory of Mrs. Neelam Khurshed Kanga – an ardent supporter of NAB – these

awards given to Visually Challenged women achievers for excelling in their chosen

profession, carry a citation and cash prize of Rs. 5,000.

• All India Flag Day for the Blind was observed on Thursday, 14th September,

2016. Honorary Secretary Mr. Gangaram Kaile visited Hon’ble Vice Admiral

Girish Luthra, AVSM, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding –in-Chief of Western Naval

Command and pinned a flag on him. As a token of appreciation they donated a

sum of Rs. 25,000/-.

World White Cane Day – Oct 15, 2016

An international awareness raising event observed the world over on OCTOBER 15 each year, the World White Cane Day highlights the Importance of the White Cane as a mobility tool used by the visually challenged. Each year on this day, NAB Department

of Rehabilitation (DOR) organizes demonstrations at many busy traffic junctions in Mumbai to educate the public about the significance of the White Cane as a symbol of

independence, self-reliance and safety for the visually challenged; familiarize people with the sighted guide techniques employed to guide visually challenged individuals in different travel situations; and sensitize them.

Major Events

This year DOR organized the first demo at Worli Seaface, which was flagged off by Mrs. Swati Thakurdesai, Hon. Secretary, NAB, India. Prof (Mrs.) Asha D. Bhatia, K. J.

Somaiya Inst. of Management Studies & Research was also present with a team of research students to document and study the efficacy of the awareness drive. Also

present at the site were office bearers and staff of NAB, India. This was followed by an awareness drive – promoting a safe environment for individuals with visual impairments at Mahalaxmi Railway Station Traffic intersection. The final demo was

held near Regal Theatre wherein Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai officials were present at the venue and participated in the demonstrations. They also sponsored snacks and

refreshments for the participants. The T shirts, Caps and information leaflets were arranged through K. J. Somaiya Inst. of Management Studies & Research.

Support of Amway Opportunities Foundation

To commemorate the World White Cane Day, Amway Opportunities Foundation (AOF) came out with a Unique Concept “Dialogue in the Dark”. A temporary dark room was

created wherein different games and identification of objects, computer etc. was demonstrated in the dark room. 25 corporate and individuals experienced the dark

room which was guided by visually challenged people. AOF also donated white canes on this occasion.

The response from the corporate and individuals was an eye opener. Mr. P. K. Singh, CEO, Union Bank of India Social Foundation and Ms. Jayashree Prabhu, Chief Manager,

GIC, liked the concept and they appreciated the efforts of NAB, India.

On the 65th Foundation Day – January 19, 2017 – NAB, India honored workers in the

field of welfare of the visually challenged, with the Rustom Merwanji Alpaiwalla

Memorial Awards – 2017. Mr. Rahul Raman, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax,

Mumbai and Mr. Mukesh Modi, Sahakarharati, Mumbai along with HSG Satya Kumar

Singh, Dr. Mrs. Vijaya Wad Chairperson NAB R. M. Alpaiwalla and N. K. Kanga

Memorial Awards Committee presented the Award to Ms. Anuradha Dalmia, Director,

National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities, Dehradun in

Professional Category. Advocate Mr. Uday Warunjikar, Advocate, Mumbai High Court

and Dr. Nagendranath Nagar, President, NAB Dahod-Panchmahals Dist. Branch were

awarded for voluntary category respectively.

Mobile Library Van a unique project initiated for the visually challenged beneficiaries.

The objective of this Mobile Library Van is to provide services to the Visually Challenged persons to the nearest stations so that they can avoid commuting in the

crowded trains/places. The services include Braille Books and Talking Book CDs and

also Educational Aids can be purchased. At present the vehicle is parked at two locations viz. Kamla Mehta School for the Blind, Dadar and MNB Industrial home for

the Blind, Jogeshwari between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The beneficiaries who would like to avail the facilities make all the concern staff and procure the required material. This Van is being sponsored by Inner Wheel Club of Bombay West. The Van is in circulation from January, 2017.

Rehabilitation Initiatives

Although the primary objective of this is to impart vocational training to the visually

impaired boys; efforts are also made to help trainees find suitable jobs. During the

year under report the Polytechnic was successful in placing a few number of trainees

in the nearby industrial setups.

Donation

Rs. 7,12,553/- was received as donation during the year of which an amount of

Rs. 1,99,000/- was received against sponsorship of uphar Yojna which equals to a total 66 days of single meals (@3000/-). The total amount includes an earmarked donation

of Rs. 3,25,000/- for construction of conference Hall & amount of Rs. 1,31,000/- for organizing picnic cum outing for students & a total sum of Rs. 57,053/- as general donation .

In addition the institute has also received donation in kind (e.g. food grains, bed

sheets etc) to the tune of Rs. 3,50,000/-

Leisure & Recreation and other Activities

Trainees celebrated Foundation Day of the Polytechnic and World White Cane Day,

besides important festivals. Yoga camp, picnic, etc. constituted leisure time activities

at the Polytechnic.

On 4th January-2015 (on the occasion of 105th Birth Day of Louis Braille) the Amway

Opportunity Foundation, Mumbai organized a cultural and Sports competition involving

our visually impaired trainees. Successful candidates and participants were given away

attractive prizes at the hand of Chief Guest, Mr. Jignesh Mehta, Manager Corporate

Communication and Amway India Enterprises.

RESIDENTS:-

Blind/Partial Blind who are above 50 years old either Male & Female of any religions,

Caste, Creed, Needy person, and Physically Mentally fit and active are admitted in the

Home. As on 1.4.2016 the home has the total strength of 71 inmates. During the

period 7 were newly admitted, 5 left the home and 4 inmates have passed away.

All are entitled for free admissions, Lodging, Boarding, Medical treatment and Funeral.

Activities carried out by the inmates are WEAVING, KNITTING, TAILORING, CANDLE

MAKING, CHAIR CANING, PAPER BAG, LIQUID SOAP and EMBROIDERY

MEDICAL CARE :-

Doctor available daily for two hours to prescribe general medicines.

If Doctor advises patients are sent to Local hospitals or Sasoon Hospital, Pune for

medication.

Lonavla.

13) On 26.1.2017, Republic Day celebrated in the Home, and Flag hoisting was done

by Blind resident Mr. Ganesh Dhond.

The NAB Phiroze & Noshir Merwanji Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind, Mt. Abu

(Rajasthan) is a full-fledged basic rehabilitation centre for blind adults providing

training in life skills, pre-vocational skills and computer operation, besides education

through open board to adult visually impaired persons.

During the year, 11 new trainees/students were admitted to various courses taking the

total strength of individuals being trained at the Centre to 48. State wise students are as follows:-

Twelve trainees completed their training course, and left the Centre for further

education/training, job etc.

Education: Apart from running a special school, which provides education from class I

to VIII, the Centre also supports education through the open schooling system for

further studies. 24 students appearing for class X and XII examination of Rajasthan

State Open School, Jaipur were provided computers and study material in Daisy

format. 6 students appeared for under graduation examinations with the help from the

centre.

Co-curricular/Extra-curricular activities: These included sports, outings, music/drama,

debates, etc. to encourage talent and potential of the trainees. They also participated

in various competitions and observed commemorative days. Our students took part in

March Past competition organized on the Republic day celebration 2017 on Polo

Ground, it is a matter of pride for us the troop from our centre got the first Prize in the

competition amongst all schools.

Through fund raising drive organized on All India Flag Day for the Blind in September

2016, the Centre collected Rs. 26,971/- and We have placed collection boxes at

various locations in Abu and were able to collect Rs. 40,769/- .

Products/services: Rs. 29,940/- were raised through sale of products like candles,

phenyl, liquid soap, door mats etc. made at the Centre and provision of services like

chair-caning, and so on.

Highlights

1. Distribution of the talking mobile to 35 blind students on 29 January, 2017 along

with 8GB memory card.

2. 8 blind students from the centre represented the team of Rajasthan State in

national cricket tournament organized at Lucknow from 1-5 March, 2017.

3. Counseling and training students for competitive tests for employment in open

industry.

The training programs in Computer, Handicraft, Therapeutic Massage & Spa, Managing

Front Desk/Reception, Life Skills and Personality Development, cracking Bank Exams,

Entrepreneurship, Research etc., conducted by NAB Sabita Saradindu Basu Centre

for Blind Women and Disability Studies(CBW) benefited 90 visually challenged

individuals. Besides, CBW was able to arrange placements for 13, provide Hostel

facility to 61 (including eight working women) and offered Scholarship to 32. Further

21 VC girls were provided support to pursue higher education by offering them career

counseling and getting enrolled in college. Ten VC girls pursuing secondary and higher

secondary education as private candidates, were helped to complete class X and XII as

private candidates, through donor support. The annual festival and talent

enhancement program "Ujjawala" organized by the CBW attracted 150 participants.

CBW received support of 350 volunteers. The Centre also helped 35 VC girls to procure

disability certificate from AIIMS.

Workshops were conducted on Yoga and meditation, communication and soft skills, personal grooming, social skills and home management, theatre, music and dance,

self-defense; reproductive health, financial literacy, usage of assistive technology and rights etc. Adventure sports-cum-recreational trips and exposure visits were also arranged. Through job-mapping, extensive efforts were made to explore new

employment avenues in Manufacturing industry, automobiles and hospitality sector; export houses, real estate industry etc.
