Staff Notes

August 30, 1968 No. 115

This spot at the north edge of the mesa, just beyond the road into

the Mesa Laboratory parking area, is the site of a new building that will

be going up during the next few months.

This building will provide office space for some of our visitors, as

well as a medium-sized meeting room. It will also serve as UCAR headquar-

ters, and Dr. Roberts and his secretary, Nancy Wright, will have offices

there.

The new building will be constructed with private funds provided by

the Fleischmann Foundation of Nevada; by the El Pomar Foundation, of Colo-

rado Springs; and by UCAR, from its corporate funds. The National Science

Foundation has deeded the one-acre building site to UCAR.

I. M. Pei and Partners, architects for the Mesa Laboratory, also de-

signed the new building for UCAR. Construction will be of poured-in-place

cpncrete, mixed with native sandstone aggregate and sandblasted to expose

the red-brown sandstone color.

An informal groundbreaking ceremony for the new building will be held

on Tuesday, September 3 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Roberts and Dr. Firor will say a

few words about the building and how it will be used. All staff members

are invited to attend the groundbreaking.

NCAR staff members sometimes bring their children along when theycome into the Mesa Laboratory in the evenings or on weekends. Our se-curity men report that on several occasions they have found children inunlocked laboratories unaccompanied by their parents, who were workingelsewhere.

Many of the labs contain equipment and materials that are dangerousif handled improperly, and it would be easy for a child to be hurt verybadly in these labs. The safety committee urges that staff members whobring their children into the building keep the children with them at alltimes.

A couple of questions from the library:

Who asked for a copy of NCAR Translation No. 382, Monto Carlo Methodsand Methods of Computer Mathematics, by Marchuk and Ermakov? He forgotto sign the request form.

What NCAR staff member borrowed Chemical Engineering and Science,Volume 12 (1960), from the CU Engineering Library in July? The Engineer-ing Library would like to have it back.

If you have the answers, please call Jo Sanford, extension 423.

The first monthly meeting of the AIAA will be held on Friday, Septem-ber 13, 1968. It will include a tour of the new United Air Lines FlightTraining Center at Stapleton International Airport and a social hour anddinner at the Olive and Grape, across the street from Stapleton at 3535Quebec Street. For information and tickets, contact R. W. Arnett or GraceDarr, 447-1000, extension 3431 or 3227.

On Friday, August 16, the fire alarm in the Mesa Laboratory went offaccidentally. Although this was a false alarm, the safety committee re-minds staff members that they should vacate the building immediately when-ever the alarm sounds, even if they are doubtful about whether or not anactual emergency exists.
