COACH’S COLUMN

On Sunday I thought we played well pretty much through all four quarters against admittedly Division 2 opposition.

Our visitors today always provide a stern test with their ability to score in transition, rebound well and have good one on one offensive threats.

Enjoy the game

Coach Mellor

Hi everyone and welcome to the Dragons Den for this afternoon’s Division One encounter against the Westminster Warriors.

Last weekend was a good one for us with a double against Lancashire Spinners Saturday in league play and Newcastle Knights Sunday in the National Cup.

It was obviously pleasing to win both games but defensively Saturday we were poor and we definitely don’t want to be giving up 96 points too often and expecting to win.

Tables as of 21/10/16

On Saturday 15 October, eight Dragons players from the U16 team travelled to Durham for the season’s first match against Durham Wildcats.

Facing an opposition with a full bench of twelve players did not phase the Dragons players in any way and they quickly settled into a strong defensive match play which enabled some positive offensive moves.

Dragons won the first quarter by 20 points and had set the tone for the rest of the match. Four quarters of similar play produced a winning score of 40 - 105.

scorers: Haben Malcolm-Warner 30, Theo Antwi 27, Jack Cavanagh 24, Joe Barrett 18, Sam Davis 4, Alex Gabbittas 2

Meanwhile, with Coach Pawel away with the U16 team, our U14 team were treated to a home match versus Manchester Magic II at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College with D1 Coach Chris Mellor in charge, ably assisted by Bartek Kromer.

On paper, Magic, having had an excellent start to their season, were looking like a formidable opponent. However, at half time the score was neck and neck and the atmosphere in the sports hall was electric. In the second half all players fought well to maintain the evenly balanced match and with the lead passing between the two teams it was Dragons who finally broke away urged on by a vocal and animated group of supporters, producing a final whistle winning score of 64 - 59.

A fantastic win which concluded with a bench of grinning players and a “bouncing” coach. No better preparation for a Division 1 match could have been asked for. Coach Mellor was up with the players on cloud nine.

A special mention this week goes to Great Osobor who, assisted by his team mates scored 41 points.

Rihards Sulcs, followed by a Lancashire turnover and a Rafi Saipe three-pointer, gave the Dragons the slightest of leads going into the break (46-45).

The Dragons took firm control of the game in the final quarter and, with only four minutes remaining, they restored their lead to eleven points (94-83). The Spinners tried their hardest to reduce the extent of Bradford’s lead, however the final buzzer sounded to signal a home win, with the Dragons hitting a ton for the first time this season (102-96).

Marcus Gooding was on fire for the Dragons, hitting 39 points, Rihards Sulcs contributed 14 points and Ricky Fetske,, added a further 13. In a great team effort, Jermayne Laing and Jason Swaine also bagged 12 apiece.

Sunday’s visitors, Team Newcastle University Knights, sit a division below the Dragons in the National Basketball League division two.

The Dragons did not have everything their own way in the opening quarter, the second division outfit putting pressure on the home defence. Going into the first scheduled break the hosts held a slight advantage at 28-23.

Bradford upped the tempo in the second quarter, with little respite for the visitors and at the half-time buzzer the Dragons were sitting comfortably at 57-41.

The Dragons continued to dominate throughout the second half, increasing their lead to twenty-three points by the end of the third period (79-56). In the final quarter the home side stretched it out further to forty points, the game finishing at 110- 70.

Rafi Saipe capped an impressive performance with 27 points to finish as the game’s high scorer. Fetske contributed 21 points, whilst Sulcs recorded his second double-double of the weekend with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Last weekend, Bradford Dragons faced a League and Cup double header in the Dragons Den, going on a scoring frenzy to clock up over two hundred points across the two games.

Saturday’s game was a repeat of two weeks previous when the Lancashire Spinners visited Bradford in the National Trophy. On that occasion Bradford claimed the win, with a 92-76 score-line and it seemed as though the home side were going to have it their own way again as they streaked into a ten point lead within the first five minutes of the game.

The Spinners turned the lead around in the second period and, with only fifteen seconds left of the first half remaining they held a four-point advantage. A two-point layup by

What do you remember about your time at Bradford Dragons?

I still look back on my Dragons’ days so fondly … my time in Bradford was one of the most formative and fun experiences in my life. I have many amazing memories of my time there. However, my fondest memories relate to the wonderful times that I spent with both my teammates and the families from the Dragons’ community. I will never forget celebrating our Division 2 Championship win, with the entire team at the Westleigh Hotel.

So, what have you been doing since you left us?

After my one season with the team, I started a job in Washington DC, working as an aide in President Obama’s White House. I spent four years in DC, all working in the Obama administration and worked my way up to be Special Assistant to the White House Chief of Staff. I feel so fortunate to have worked for this President and it was a fascinating professional experience.

In the last few months, I left the White House and moved back to my hometown of Chicago, Illinois. I took a job as an Advisor to Mayor of the city of Chicago. It is great living near family and friends and I am enjoying my time in Chicago immensely.

I still try to keep tabs, from afar, on the how the Dragons are performing and I hope that I can find my way back for a visit sometime in the near future.

We start with a player that helped Bradford to claim the Division 2 championship back in the 2010/11 season:

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?Throughout this season we will be looking back at some of our former Bradford Dragons’ players.
