National Parks, Rivers and Beaches Authority Newsletter Black Point Heritage and Recreational Park: Black Point Heritage and Recreational Park is one of the most popular recreational and historic sites on the windward coast. Its main feature is the Black Point Tunnel which was constructed by the British around 1815 using slave labour. A marvel of engineering for its time, the 360 feet long tunnel enabled easier transport of sugar from the mills of Grand Sable Estate to the wharf at Byrea. Other attractions at Black Point Heritage and Recreational Park include a black sand beach, Grand Sable River surrounded by natural vegetation, a tropical garden and a large playing field. Outreach Activities June/2017 Park Highlight World Oceans Day Activities The National Parks, Rivers, and Beaches Authority (NPRBA) recently completed a week of events to commemorate World Oceans Day for 2017. The activities started on Friday June 2 nd with a beach cleanup at Colonarie bay. The cleanup is highlighted on the back of this newsletter. On Wednesday, June 7 th members of the NPRBA commemorate World Oceans day by attending the morning assembly at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School. During the assembly students were taught about the importance of our Oceans and how many valuable goods and services we receive every day from our oceans. Education about littering and pollution was also disseminated. On Thursday, June 8 th members of the NPRBA continued to commemorate World Oceans Day by participating in the NBC Radio program Face-to-Face with Desmond Arrendelle. This was an avenue for the NPRBA to reach a much wider audience across the country. The final activity conducted by the NPRBA staff happened on Friday June 9 th at the Imani Preschool. Students participated in an activity matching garbage found in the ocean to the amount of time it takes for them to decompose. The NPA staff had discussions with the children, focused on the importance of Oceans and fish and how everyone can help keep the oceans clean. SVG Sea Turtle Conservation Programme (STCPSVG)

The STCPSVG recently conducted four days of Education and Training activities from the 18th April, 2017 to the 21st April, 2017 as part of actions to increase awareness and develop capacity in sea turtle biological monitoring. The activities included School visits, In-house, and practical trainings that were facilitated by representatives of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project Dr. Darren Browne and Ms. Carla Daniel. The first In-house presentation was held on Tuesday 18th April, 2017 at the Fisheries Conference room targeting the staff of key agencies involved in the Programme, such as Fisheries Division, Forestry Division and National Parks Authority. School visits were conducted on the 19th April, 2017 for the purpose of educating the students about the importance of Sea Turtle Conservation, targeting the 4th and 5th Grade at Primary School level and members of the Young Leaders Programme at the Secondary level. In-house and practical training sessions were conducted on the 20th and 21st of April, 2017 within the communities of Sandy Bay and Colonarie. These sessions taught about sea turtle biology, monitoring and provided case studies and were aimed at local community members including volunteers and law enforcement officers.

The National Parks, Rivers, and Beaches Authority, in collaboration with the Fisheries Divisions under the STCPSVG hosted a beach clean-up at Colonarie Bay on Friday June 2nd at 9AM. This event was just one part of numerous activities scheduled to commemorate World Oceans day which is celebrated on June 8th. The Colonarie Secondary School Young Leaders program and community members participated in the clean-up efforts. Education was provided about the importance of our oceans and the effects of improper waste disposal. Thirty seven (37) bags of garbage were collected on the beach.
