Yesterday, the mining mag- nate was leading Liberal Nat- ional Party opponent Ted O’B- rien by just 42 votes in a recount for the Sunshine Coast seat of Fairfax. A high number of ballot challenges is dragging out the process. BIKIE BLITZ ADS UP BRISBANE: Almost $800,000 spent on advertising the Queensland Government’s bi- kie crackdown will be footed by taxpayers. New television, radio and print ads were launched on Thursday night. Police Minis- ter Jack Dempsey said the ads would reassure other riders that police will only target illegal groups. COURAGE IN A KAYAK BRISBANE: An Australian soldier who lost his legs while clearing land mines in Afghan- istan will kayak from Sydney to Brisbane in 21 days. Sapper Curtis McGrath is among 23 current and former Australian Defence Force per- sonnel who will clock up to 1000 gruelling kilometres in the Mates4Mates sea kayak challenge from this morning. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and his deputy Tanya Plibersek Picture: RAY STRANGE Labor reborn embraces Gen X NEWLY elected Labor Leader Bill Shorten has trumpeted the youth as well as the female influence in his new-look frontbench. Mr Shorten unveiled the portfolio positions of his ‘‘en- ergetic’’ leadership team in Canberra yesterday and em- phasised many senior people were women and were work- ing parents with young kids. But his vanquished leader- ship rival Anthony Albanese lost the suite of key jobs he had been given prior to the election, being left only with infrastructure, transport and the new role of tourism. Among the biggest shocks in the new Labor line-up in- clude the moves of former communications minister Stephen Conroy to Defence and former home affairs min- ister Jason Clare to commun- ications spokesman. Penny Wong moves out of the finance portfolio to trade as expected and Tanya Plibersek will take on Julie Bishop in the role of foreign affairs spokeswoman. Mr Shorten said his team was made up of more ‘‘Gen X’’ than ever before. Hinch fined $100,000 Derryn Hinch MELBOURNE: Derryn Hinch expected to be thrown back in jail for his latest con- tempt of court. Instead he walked away with a $100,000 fine and a scathing character assess- ment in which he was label- led self-opinionated and grossly irresponsible. Victorian Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kaye opted not to jail Hinch, but slam- med the veteran broadcaster for what he described as a calculated attempt to under- mine the justice system. It is Hinch’s sixth convic- tion for contempt of court or related offences, a record which Justice Kaye de- scribed as disgraceful. Hinch admits the huge fine will ‘‘hurt like hell’’ and apologised for offending the court, but has vowed to con- tinue campaign- ing against sex offenders, this time legally. Hinch was found guilty of contempt for breaching a suppression order made by Justice Geoffrey Nettle when he published details on his blog about Adrian Ernest Bayley, including that he was on bail and parole when he murdered Melbourne woman Jill Meagher. Justice Kaye said while he accepted the 69-year-old regretted what he had done, it was only because he found himself in very serious trouble and that Hinch was not genuinely remorseful. ‘‘Your conduct was grossly irresponsible,’’ Justice Kaye told Hinch. ‘‘Although you thought you knew better than Justice Nettle, clearly you did not. ‘‘You were not aware of critical facts. ‘‘At your age and with your experience you should have been setting an example of re- sponsible journalism.’’ Hinch promised to con- tinue to campaigning for transparency in the Victor- ian legal system regarding sex offenders, a cause for which he has previously been jailed. ‘‘I have to find legal ways that I can continue cam- paigning the way that I have,’’ he said.
