MELBOURNE: DerrynHinch expected to be thrownback in jail for his latest con-tempt of court.

Instead he walked awaywith a $100,000 fine and ascathing character assess-ment in which he was label-led self-opinionated andgrossly irresponsible.

Victorian Supreme CourtJustice Stephen Kaye optednot to jail Hinch, but slam-med the veteran broadcasterfor what he described as acalculated attempt to under-mine the justice system.

It is Hinch’s sixth convic-tion for contempt of courtor related offences, a recordwhich Justice Kaye de-scribed as disgraceful.

Hinch admits the huge finewill ‘‘hurt like hell’’ and

apologised foroffending thecourt, but hasvowed to con-tinue campaign-ing against sexoffenders, this

time legally.Hinch was found guilty of

contempt for breaching asuppression order made byJustice Geoffrey Nettle whenhe published details on hisblog about Adrian ErnestBayley, including that he wason bail and parole when hemurdered Melbourne womanJill Meagher.

Justice Kaye said whilehe accepted the 69-year-oldregretted what he had done,it was only because he foundhimself in very serioustrouble and that Hinch was

not genuinely remorseful.‘‘Your conduct was grossly

irresponsible,’’ Justice Kayetold Hinch.

‘‘Although you thoughtyou knew better than JusticeNettle, clearly you did not.

‘‘You were not aware ofcritical facts.

‘‘At your age and with yourexperience you should havebeen setting an example of re-sponsible journalism.’’

Hinch promised to con-tinue to campaigning fortransparency in the Victor-ian legal system regardingsex offenders, a cause forwhich he has previouslybeen jailed.

‘‘I have to find legal waysthat I can continue cam-paigning the way that Ihave,’’ he said.
