Paris 11 July - The International Coordinating Council of UNESCOrsquos Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) meeting in Paris from 9 to 13 July has added 20 new sites including two transboundary to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) The network now includes 610 biosphere reserves in 117 countries including 12 transboundary sites Biosphere Reserves were inscribed in Haiti Kazakhstan and Sao Tome and Principe for the first time this year

Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science

Biodiversity and Climate Change

The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the World Network of Biosphere

Reserves (WNBR) apply an integrated approach in addressing biodiversity and climate

change challenges

They rely on interdisciplinary mechanisms combining science culture and education to

find solutions for reducing the current rate of biodiversity loss for the benefits of both the

environment and human populations around the globe and support the implementation of

relevant provisions under the main multilateral environmental agreements dealing with

biodiversity including the Convention on Biological Diversity

The MAB Programme and WNBR are also committed to realizing the main objectives of

the UNESCO Strategy for Action on Climate Change tobuild and maintain the climate

change knowledge base through science assessment monitoring and early warning and

promote mitigation and adaptation to climate change including through enhanced

The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme is an Intergovernmental Scientific

Programme aiming to set a scientific basis for the improvement of the relationships

between people and their environment globally

Launched in the early 1970s it proposes an interdisciplinary research agenda and capacity

building that target the ecological social and economic dimensions of biodiversity loss and

the reduction of this loss

The agenda of the MAB Prorgamme is defined by its main governing body the

International Co-ordinating Council in concertation with the broader MAB Community

Sub-programmes and activities focus on specific ecosystems mountains drylands tropical

forests urban systems wetlands and marine island and coastal ecosystems

Biodiversity Science and Research for Management and Policy

UNESCO and its MAB Programme support biodiversity research through in situ and remote

observations using space technologies for the monitoring of biosphere reserves Integrated

approaches to biodiversity monitoring are used these consider not only ecological parameters

but also social economic and cultural factorsThe main body of biodiversity research and

monitoring is done by the MAB Ecosystem Networks

Major international scientific programmes developed under the MAB Programme include

GLOCHAMORE ndash Global Change in Mountain Regions and SUMAMAD ndash Sustainable Management of Marginal Drylands

The MAB Programme also contributes to a number of international projects and programmes

such as GRASP - Great Apes Survival Project and DIVERSITAS

The World Network of Biosphere Reserves is used to develop and test innovative approaches

to sustainable use and management of biodiversity In particular biosphere reserves are used as

learning places where conservation of biodiversity is embedded in social and economic

development The intersectoral approach of the MAB Programme also contributes to better

World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR)

Composed of 610 biosphere reserves in 117 countries including 12 transboundary sites the

WNBR of the MAB Programme promotes North-South and South-South collaboration and

represents a unique tool for international co-operation through sharing knowledge

exchanging experiences building capacity and promoting best practices Vision

The World Network of Biosphere Reserves of the MAB Programme consists of a dynamic and interactive network of sites of excellence It fosters the harmonious integration of people and nature for sustainable development through participatory dialogue knowledge sharing poverty reduction and human well-being improvements respect for cultural values and societyrsquos ability to cope with change - thus contributing to the Millenium Development Goals Accordingly the WNBR is one of the main international tools to develop and implement sustainable development approaches in a wide array of contexts

Jinggangshan China has a mid-subtropical humid monsoon climate and diverse landscapes of mountains valleys structural basins and Karst with elevation varying from 381m to 1779m above sea level It is the largest continuous area of primary broad leaf forest ecosystem in the whole sub-tropical zone There are 3415 higher plant species (with mutant species) Local residents live on agriculture and forest industries such as rice potato vegetables bamboo and tea-tree oil cultivation The tourism industry at Jinggangshan has developed not only because of the marvellous landscapes and scenic spots but also because of its historical sites linked to Chinarsquos Revolution

Tehuacaacuten-Cuicatlaacuten Mexico is located on an arid mountain and high lands system and has one of Mexicorsquos highest rates of biodiversity and endemic species It is the most emblematic of the old landscapes of Mesoamerica and is host to eight different ethnic groups It includes the original domestication sites for maize cucumber avocado and beans The most relevant ecosystem is a densely wooded expanse of arborescent cactus species (bosque de cactaacuteceas columnares) and the tropical dry forest (selva baja caducifolia)

Korgalzhyn Kazakhstan is Kazakhstanrsquos first ever biosphere reserve Situated in the northerncentral part of Kazakhstan the site is a complex of freshwater and saline lakes embedded in the dry steppe zone of Eurasia making it an important wetland site for migratory water birds (including globally threatened species among them the extremely rare Siberian white crane the Dalmatian pelican Pallasrsquos fish eagle) Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve is also one of the clusters of the UNESCO World Heritage site ldquoSaryarka ndash Steppes and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstanrdquo The total proposed area covers 1 603 171 ha About 12 500 people live in the area The territory is characterized by elevated plains hills lake depressions and marked by an extreme-continental climate Human emigration caused by overall environmental degradation (unsustainable use of water and biological resources unsustainable ldquowildrdquo tourism) is now addressed through a variety of pilot projects such as to foster sustainable pasture management ecotourism the creation of fishing and hunting farms and the demonstration of alternative power sources copy UNESCO 1995-2012

Aya - Japan

Aya Japan in the eastern part of Japanrsquos southern Kyushu Island harbors one of the countryrsquos largest remaining lucidophyllous forests The total area of 14580 ha includes Aya Town in the transition zone which has a population of 7283 The core area is made up of the preserved district of the Aya Forestry Ecosystem Protected Area and is included in the Kyushu Central Mountains Quasi National Park The area has never been used for human activities and is the object of scientific studies on the structure function and dynamics of the lucidophyllous forest The transition zone is mainly used for organic agriculture and Aya Town is the first community in the country to develop a traditional recycling-oriented agricultural system put in place in 1988 Ecotourism including ldquoforest therapyrdquo (for healing purposes) and forest environmental education is actively developed

13 New Sites Join the UNESCOs World Network of Biosphere Reserves

The 22nd session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere

Programme (MAB-ICC) has added 13 new sites from 15 countries to the UNESCOs World Network

of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) which now counts 564 sites in 109 countries More

Reserves were inscribed in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe for the first time this year Sweden and the

United Kingdom for their part decided to withdraw two sites from the World Network of Biosphere

Reserves - Lake Torne and Taynish respectively - because they do not meet the criteria set out in the

Seville Strategy of 1995 Biosphere Reserves are areas designated under UNESCOs Man and the

Biosphere (MAB) Programme to serve as places to test different approaches to integrated

management of terrestrial freshwater coastal and marine resources and biodiversity Biosphere

The reserve is located in the central highlands of the southern part of Jordan valley It lies between Wadi Zarqa Marsquoin the northern border of the reserve and Wadi Shegeig the southern border of the reserve The western border of the reserve lies on the Dead Sea Road which is the lowest depression of the earth 420 m below the sea level The reserve includes a system of mountains and wadis extending from the rift valley escarpment to the Dead Sea Shores The Rift Valley escarpment drops abruptly from the edge of the gently undulating basalt-crapped highland plateau (the rain-fed wheat fields at the heart of the ancient kingdom of Moab) with altitude and rainfall decreasing from east to west At the higher altitude the escarpment terran is composed of rounded relatively lsquosmoothrsquo spurs and promontories which descend gently westwards and which are dissected by numerous steep but smooth-sided valleys At the lower altitudes the escarpment terrain is much more broken and uneven At all levels there are cliffs but these are largest and most impressive at the lowest altitudes especially at the terminal gorge of Wadi Mujib just before it reaches the Dead Sea and the area where Wadi Hidan runs through the basalt outcrop copy UNESCO
