JUNE 23, 2019 - THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST

At ROAR VBS, students learned 5 bible points that our activities, skits, prayers, crafts, and snacks were all based upon:

When life is unfair..... GOD IS GOOD! When life is scary.... GOD IS GOOD! When life changes.... GOD IS GOOD! When life is sad.... GOD IS GOOD! When life is good.... GOD IS GOOD!

A huge THANK YOU to all who participated, volunteered, donated or were involved in any way, shape or form! ROAR VBS was a huge success and we had a blast learning about God's goodness and watching for God sight-ings in everyone and everything around us. VBS would not be made possible without generous donations or the wonderful volunteer staff. Thank you to the staff for all they did to prepare for the week and make it fun and suc-cessful! We had a ROARsome week for sure. ~Maria Milazzo, VBS Director

JUNE 23, 2019 - THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST

Today we hear how Abram encounters Melchizedek, king of Salem . . . and a priest of God Most High (Genesis 14:18). Melchizedek appears nowhere else in scripture, but is nonetheless significant. Psalm 110 declares of the great King David, You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek, a description later given (in the letter to the Hebrews) to Christ as High Priest.

Early Christians saw in Melchizedek’s bread and wine the bread and wine of the Eucharist; Paul’s account of the Last Supper (in today’s second reading) is the oldest one in scripture. In the Gospel, Luke describes Jesus providing bread for a crowd in words similar to Paul’s, words still used by the Church: Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it. To-gether, these three readings reveal how Christian priesthood, Christ’s Real Presence, and the call to serve those in need are all found in the gift of the Eucharist.

DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME We are familiar with the instructions that Jesus gives his disciples at the Last Supper. But what exactly is it that we are to do in remembrance of Jesus? One answer focuses on the institution narrative found in the Eucharistic Prayers: we are to consecrate the bread and wine, changing them, by the power of the Holy Spirit, into the Body and Blood of Christ. This is true; but let’s think about what it takes to actually do this, as the Church has done for almost two thousand years:

* We are to remember Jesus--to remember Jesus, the Word of God in human form. To do this, we need that other word of God, given in a different form: the words of the scriptures.

* We need to assemble to do this. The Last Supper is a communal meal with Jesus. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul describes actions done within a group, actions that began with that communal meal with Jesus. We gather as today’s disciples and continue that group activity in our assemblies.

* We need to find a way to assemble with some degree of order. We need leaders. We need preachers to preach the Word, we need presiders to repeat the actions of Jesus, persons who are ordered --ordained--for preaching and for the consecration of the bread and wine.

CHURCH, EUCHARIST, AND THOSE IN NEED There is a saying: The Church makes the Eucharist, and the Eucharist makes the Church. In the Eucharistic celebra-tion, we find Christ truly present in the consecrated bread and wine. We also find him in the assembly, the scriptures, and the preacher-presider--everything we do to do this, and in doing this, we become the Body of Christ. Our Eucha-ristic remembrance of Jesus is a living sacramental memory that transforms us, too. We receive Communion to live in communion with Christ and one another, to become the real presence of Christ in the world. We do what the disciples did: we feed those in need with the love and compassion with which Christ feeds us.

TREASURERS FROM OUR TRADITION

We owe today’s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became con-vinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that nobody wanted. He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent.

Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the Eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ’s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ’s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an anchoress, a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imagine her de-light at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ’s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ’s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her struggle and sorrows with dignity and meaning.

ST. MARY’S OUTREACH CENTER NEWS

St. Mary’s Outreach Center News for May 2019 For the month of May, we assisted 140 families with food for a total of 433 people of which 126 were children and 33 were elderly. 1,674 items of clothing were given to 130 families. We assisted 6 persons with prescription assistance. Ten packages of diapers and wipes were given. Thanks to our volunteers who put in 411 hours in support of our services. In addition, on a routine basis St. Mary’s Outreach sup-ports Journey to New Life with clothing and miscellane-ous household items. Journey to New Life is a ministry to assist men and women who have been in prison to re-enter society. Journey House for Women is a part of this ministry and the Outreach re-donates clothing and household items that residents may not have access. Journey, in turn, will re-donate clothing Little Sisters of the Poor residents. You can find out more about Jour-ney to New Life/Journey House for Women at https://www.journeytonewlife.org. We also re-donate clothing items for the residents of Carmel Hills Nursing Home who don’t have families or others to rely on. These re-donated items are given only when we have been blessed with an overabundance of clothing and other items. These organizations do not resell any of the items we donate.
