WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED
Q: If we have a separation of church and state, how should faith influence the way we act in soci-ety, especially for those who have a role in the government? A: No matter who we are, our inner lives affect the way we interact with the world. In the United States, we have freedom of religion. That means there is no official state-sanctioned religion. This does not mean that our faith is a private affair with no impact on public life! We have the ability to freely exercise our religious beliefs in accord with our conscience. Not only do we have the option to do so, but we also have the responsibility. We’re called to imitate Christ in every area of our life, not compartmentalize our faith. This means acting with respect and honoring the common hu-manity to all we encounter. It means recognizing the person behind the politics. It also means standing up for the truth of human life and dignity, and advocat-ing for just policies that serve the common good. The Vatican has produced a “Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.” It contains more de-tailed exposition of how our Catholic faith relates to various aspects of public life. One can find the text for the “Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church” by searching on the internet. It is found on the Vatican Website accordingly www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/justpeace/
REFLECTIONS – Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - For generations, people have often believed that the good prosper and when bad things happen to someone it is because they are being punished for their sins. Yet the very life of Jesus contradicts this notion. Who was more kind, compassionate, or just? Things that happen in our lives are not judgements against or for us. They are simply the realities we must deal with. If we seek God’s help, we will have the graces we need to use all things, the positive and the negative for good.
“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” - Romans 12:2

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 24, 2019
Reading I: 2 Samuel 5:1-3 • Today’s reading records how God orchestrated David’s anointing as king of Israel, a central figure in Jesus’ ancestry. What does this teach us about God’s divine providence? Reading II: Colossians 1:12-20 • In today’s reading from Colossians, St. Paul preserves for us one of the earliest Christological hymns (Col 1:15-20). How do you see this hymn affirming Jesus’ identity as our Lord and King? Gospel: Lk 23:35-43 • For St. Luke, those who mocked Jesus on the cross, failed to see how his suffering and death were central to his identity as Lord and King of the Universe. Why do you think this remains a mystery to so many?
