Rembrandt illustrates the parable of the rich fool, as told in
Luke 12: 16-21. At night a rich man studies one of his golden
coins The usual interpretation of the parable is that there is no
point in spending a life gathering wealth. After all, once you die
money is of no use. It might even get into the hands of people who do not deserve it. It is the before thought to be wiser to be "rich
toward God".

Eastern-rite Catholics use leavened bread in Holy Communion, but Roman-rite Catholics use unleavened bread. Why the difference? The Eastern tradition likens yeast in bread to the soul in the body. The soul gives life, and therefore the “living bread” of the Eucharist must have yeast. The West uses unleavened bread because that is what Jesus used in the Last Supper. When the Churches split in 1054, the Patriarch of Constantinople condemned the West for using unleavened bread, but that was a spurious charge. The Council of Florence approved the use of either kind of bread in 1439, so the use of leavened or unleavened bread is a question of lucidness, not validity. This was infallibly defined.
continued from cover page - Parable of the Rich Fool If we allow money and the material things of this world to dominate our thoughts and the focus of our lives, we end up idolizing those things, and our hearts will be geared towards the pursuit of those things. The famous Scripture, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10), is clear that it is the love of money that is a root of all kinds of evil, not the money itself. Having money is not the problem, but our attitude towards it can become a problem. We need to regard our finances as a tool that we are being stewards of for the Lord. Rather than becoming possessive about our money and allowing the world to dictate what we spend it on, let us instead allow God to move us in how we spend our money, which is ultimately His anyway because He gave it to us. People say “what I do with my money is my business!” Just remember, it is God who gave you the intellect, the physical capacity to do things, and the mental drive to reach your goal, which enabled you to get a job in the first place

November 13th: How To Put Mercy into Practice The Jubilee Year of Mercy will end shortly. So what to we do now? We put into practice all the insights and graces we have gained during the past twelve months. It is Saint Paul himself, in his letter to the early church at Ephesus, who tells us how simple—and necessary—this is. “Be kind to one another, compassionate and mutually forgiving,” he wrote, “just as God has forgiven you in Christ.” (Ephesians 4:32) But how difficult is this guidance! Because it’s up to us as individuals to swing the pendulum in the direction of love and respect for others. Will you hold the door open for unappreciative people behind? Let arrogant drivers cut in front of you? Greet strangers with a smile as you go about your day? Saint Teresa of Avila offers this advice: “Our Lord asks only two things of us: love for him and for our neighbor. If we practice these perfectly, we shall be doing his will and so shall be united with him.” (Interior Castle: V, 3) Our prayer today: Merciful Lord of us all, help us wrap our thoughts, words and actions within the embrace of your loving kindness, so that we are pleasing to you this day and always.

Don’t scatter cremated ashes or keep them at home, Vatican says
26 October 2016 - The Roman Catholic Church prefers burial over cremation and wants ashes of the dead to be kept in “sacred places”, not at home, divided among family members or scattered to the wind, the Vatican said on Tuesday, informs Reuters. A two-page instruction issuing new rules on cremation also said that there were even some cases where a Christian funeral could be denied to those who request that ashes be scattered. “The conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted,” the instruction from the Vatican’s department on doctrine said, except in “grave and exceptional cases” to be decided by the local bishop. For centuries, the Catholic Church prohibited cremation because it clashed with teachings about the resurrection of the body in the Last Judgment at the end of the world. It started allowing cremation in 1963, but has always frowned on the practice. “The Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places,” because it showed the dignity
and respect for the human body, said the document approved by Pope Francis. If cremation is chosen, “the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area which has been set aside for this purpose,” it said. “It is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects,” the document said. The Church could not permit or condone attitudes such as considering death as the “definitive annihilation of the person, or the moment of fusion with Mother Nature or the universe, or as a stage in the cycle of regeneration.” A Christian funeral could be denied if a person requests scattering of ashes as a means to mock the faith, the document added. “ A population that does not take care of the elderly and of children and the young has no future, because it abuses both its memory and its
promise.” – Pope Francis.
Monday, November
14th; we celebrate the feast of Saint Philip the
Apostle. Saint Philip was first a disciple of Saint John the Baptist, but one day Jesus said to him, “Follow me!”
and Philip left everything to follow Jesus. The first thing
that Philip did after deciding to follow Jesus was to rush to share this good news with his friend,
Nathaniel. This teaches us something very important
about evangelization - that is, about sharing the Gospel with others. Consider the following
story: One day, two missionaries were sent out to teach others about Christ. One missionary spent his time speaking to large members of
people and preaching in a very eloquent manner. Over the years, thousands of people heard his words, yet a very few of them ever
became Christians. The other missionary, however, spoke plainly and simply to only two or three more people. They became Christians
and each one of them, in turn, shared their faith with two or three more people. Over the years, many hundreds of people became Christians - and it all began with one man sharing his faith
with a few others. Personal contact is the most effective way of
sharing the Good News. Perhaps that’s why Christ came when He did: before mass
communications, email, facebook, iphones and social media. He wanted His message to be
shared personally because that’s when it works best! On this feast of St Philip, let’s reflect on the kinds messages we convey to the people around us with our words, our attitudes, our priorities,
and our conduct.
