Recuerde que como miembro registrado recibe sobres

de contribución semanales, y al final del año fiscal,

Hoy celebramos el nacimiento de Juan el Bautista; es

una fiesta de mediados de verano así como el

nacimiento de Cristo es una fiesta de invierno, Juan

nació seis meses antes que Jesús

Hay una especie de lógica teológica en esto, aunque

algunos podrían llamarla lógica romántica, en el

sentido de que una de las profecías más famosas de

John es que "debo disminuir y debe aumentar". Y

refleja el hecho de que a mediados del verano los días

sí Disminuye hasta la llegada de Cristo en Navidad

cuando aumentan nuevamente.

El nombre de Juan, que eligió Zacarías, significa "Dios

le demostrará favor", lo cual es ciertamente auspicioso.

Por supuesto, todos en el pueblo asumieron que John

se llamaría Zachariah por su padre y también creían

que lo seguirían como sacerdote en el Templo, pero

Dios tenía otras ideas.

Hay una buena lección para nosotros aquí. A menudo

pensamos que sabemos cómo resultará alguien en la

vida, a menudo tenemos ideas muy firmes sobre lo que

haremos en nuestras propias vidas y carreras, pero

pronto descubrimos que con frecuencia Dios tiene

otras ideas.

Juan fue marcado desde su mismo nacimiento para ser

el heraldo de Cristo. De manera similar, Dios nos ha

marcado a cada uno de nosotros para un trabajo

particular en el mundo. Quizás ya sabemos dónde

quiere Dios que vayamos y qué quiere que hagamos, o

nosotros fue bautizado, cada uno de nosotros hizo las

promesas bautismales de rechazar a Satanás y abrazar

la creencia en Cristo. Esto es más que una pista de lo

que Dios quiere para nosotros. Él nos ha elegido para

ser sus testigos en el mundo.

Podemos decir con confianza que Juan el Bautista fue

el último de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento. En

su manera y discurso, claramente tiene algo de

Jeremiah o Elijah sobre él.

Pero también podría decir que Juan el Bautista fue el

primero de los Profetas del Nuevo Testamento, el

primero de los testigos de Cristo. Siempre hay una

necesidad de profetas en la Iglesia y Dios no ha sido

negligente al proporcionarlos.

Pablo fue invitado a decir algunas palabras en la

sinagoga de Antioquía, se puso de pie y dio el hermoso

relato de la historia de la salvación que escuchamos en

la segunda lectura de hoy.

Y lo concluyó diciendo a sus hermanos judíos: este

mensaje de salvación está destinado a ustedes. Habla a

los judíos de Antioquía pero también nos habla. Este

mensaje de salvación es para nosotros también.

Recibimos la salvación que Cristo ganó para nosotros,

pero también somos, como Juan, sus heraldos.

Nosotros también proclamamos un Bautismo de

arrepentimiento para la remisión de los pecados.

Nosotros también rechazamos el pecado y

proclamamos nuestra creencia en Dios el Padre, el

Hijo y el Espíritu Santo.

Today we celebrate the Birth of John the Baptist; it is a

midsummer feast just as the Birth of Christ is a

midwinter feast, John being born six months before

Jesus. There is a sort of theological logic in this,

although some might call it romantic logic, in that one

of John’s most famous prophesies is that ‘I must

decrease and he must increase.’ And it reflects the fact

that from midsummer on the days do decrease until the

arrival of Christ at Christmas when they increase

again. The name John, that Zechariah chose, means

‘God will show him favor’ which is certainly

auspicious.

Of course, everyone in the village assumed that John

would be called Zechariah after his father and they

also believed that he would most likely follow him as a

priest in the Temple, but God had other ideas. There is

a good lesson for us here. We often think we know

how someone will turn out in life, we often have very

firm ideas about what we ourselves will do in our own

lives and careers, but we soon learn that quite often

God has other ideas. John was marked out from his

very birth to be the herald of Christ. In a similar

was God has marked each one of us out for a particular

work in the world. Maybe we already know where

God wants us to go and what he wants us to do, or

maybe not.

John is the one who brought Baptism into being for the

Church and maybe this could give us a clue. Each one

of us was Baptized, each one of us has made those

Baptismal promises to reject Satan and to embrace

belief in Christ. This is more than a clue to what God

wants for us. He has chosen us to be his witnesses in

the world. We can with confidence say that John the

Baptist was the last of the Old Testament Prophets. In

his manner and speech he clearly has something of

Jeremiah or Elijah about him.

There is always a need for prophets in the Church and

God has not been neglectful in providing them.

Paul was invited to say a few words in the synagogue

of Antioch he stood up and gave the beautiful account

of the history of salvation that we heard in the second

reading today.

And he concluded it by saying to his Jewish brothers:

this message of salvation is meant for you. He speaks

to the Jews of Antioch but he also speaks to us. This

message of salvation is meant for us too.

We receive the salvation Christ won for us but we are

also, like John, its heralds. We too proclaim a Baptism

of repentance for the remission of sins. We too reject

sin and proclaim our belief in God the Father, Son and

Holy Spirit.
