In Term 4 we made a trip to Wellington with the New

Zealand Studies Class. First we drove with the Bus to

Picton and then we caught the ferry to Wellington.

When we arrived we walked along the seaside to our

Motel and the view from the haven over the city was

really beautiful.

In the evening we prepared Sushi and the next day we

were in the famous Te Papa museum.

Afterwards we went to the Weta Workshop, the place

where the things Peter Jackson needs for his films are

made.

The last day we were at the Parliament and had a guide

who showed us around.

Pavlova

3 egg whites 1 teaspoon vinegar

3 tablespoons cold water 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

1 cup caster sugar 3 teaspoon corn flour

Serves 6.

Preheat oven 150 °C. Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites until stiff. Add water and beat again. Add

sugar very gradually while still beating. Slow beater and add vinegar, vanilla and cornflour. Line an oven

tray with baking paper. Draw a 22cm circle on the baking paper. Spread the pavlova to within 2cm of the

edge of the circle, keeping the shape as round and even as possible. Smooth top surface over. Bake

pavlova for 45 minutes, then leave to cool in the oven. Carefully lift pavlova onto a serving plate.

Decorate with whipped cream and fresh fruit.

Pavlova is a meringue-based dessert named after the Russian ballet dancer Anna

Pavlova. It is a meringue dessert with a crisp crust and soft, light inside.

The dessert is believed to have been created in honour of the dancer either during or

after one of her tours to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. The nationality of its

creator has been a source of argument between the two nations for many years, but

formal research indicates New Zealand as the source.

The dessert is a popular dish and an important part of the national cuisine of both

countries, and with its simple recipe, is frequently served during celebratory and

holiday meals. It is a dessert most identified with the summer time, but is eaten all

year round in many Australian and New Zealand homes.

Kahurangi national park is middle earth

Our first outdoor education camp took us into the beautiful mountains of

Kahurangi. We had enjoyed our first weeks in New Zealand. However, we

had only seen the area of Nelson. So the camp gave us a good opportunity to

see more of New Zealand’s awesome landscape. After we had organised our

gear, our journey began. We parked the vans and started tramping with

pretty heavy backpacks. The destination was Sylvester hut, which we

reached after 2.5h of walking. Now our challenge was to build a shelter to

survive the freezing nights in an altitudes of more than one thousand meters.

We put a lot of effort in ours and because of that we could sleep. On the next

day we woke up really early because it was so cold that we couldn’t sleep

any longer. After breakfast we had some possibilities to choose between

different tours. Anton and I chose to walk to Lake Lilly. Our way led us

through untouched nature with stunning views which reminded us of the

movie the Lord of the Rings. A freezing wind was blowing at Lake Lilly.

Therefore our lunch break wasn’t that enjoyable and we were all glad to

continue our walk back via Iron Lake. The hardest part was the way up to

Iron Lake because it was really steep and we had to cross Iron stream several

times. Exhausted we arrived at the highest point of our journey. The rest of

our walk wasn’t that hard. Back at the hut we cooked our tea in front of our

shelter. The next day we got up before sunrise and took a lot of beautiful

pictures. After breakfast we headed back to the vans. Finally, we arrived in

Nelson in the afternoon. It was a great experience for every one of us and we

will often look back at this awesome time at Kahurangi.

Same sport, Same sport, Same sport, Same sport,

different countrydifferent countrydifferent countrydifferent country

You would think through international the rules of the sports

around the world wouldn’t differ too much. Well the federations

are trying to reach an overall standard, so nobody has an

advantage or disadvantage. However, then you have to acknowledge

the situations in different countries.

I was born and grew up in Austria in Europe. Volleyball over

there is very big, like in New Zealand. However, the quality and

standard of playing are very distinct. In order to build a

national team in Europe, you have to be exceptional and you need

a sponsor, who funds you. Whereas, it is only for people, who can

afford it in New Zealand. If someone can’t afford it thenthe

next person will be asked.

Another thing I noticed is that the opportunities in New Zealand,

or better said the ones you don’t have, will make it a lot

harder for young, upcoming and talented players. In New Zealand

you need your own promotional DVD to get a scholarship even

though, it costs you a lot of money. On contrary, you jump in a

train and go to a practice in Europe. So the coach has a better

idea of your capability and your style of playing.

At the end of

March, we went

on a trip to

Wellington. We took the bus to Picton and the ferry

to Wellington. On the ferry we had lots of food and

looked for a dolphin but we could not find it. After

we arrived in Wellington, we went shopping and

took a rest. In the evening we cooked dinner and

shared it with everyone. There were many nice

dishes and we enjoyed them.

The 2nd day, we went to Te Papa, the national

museum. There were lots of interesting displays

like earthquake experience and Marae which is a

Maori meeting place. After that we went to an

Indian restaurant. We ordered some nice Indian

food and rice but the rice was not enough and the

foods were also really expensive. That is why we

could not enjoy the dinner that much well.

The last day, we went to the Weta workshop and

there were many displays of some movies such as

the Hobbit. It was quite exciting and interesting.

After that we took the ferry and the bus and

arrived at school in the evening. It was a nice and

fun trip and we really enjoyed it.

Page 33: Nayland college international student yearbook 2014 part 2 of 2

Norwegians Abroad

Nine stunning girls and one handsome boy were gathered at the biggest airport in Norway, Gardemoen. Everyone was from different parts of the country, and all of us were ready to experience a new life on the other side of the world. From the first day we met we became a family and ever since that day we've been stuck together. We're all happy with our host families, especially Thea which have bonded with her dog. She's always talking about him, yeah she found her best friend early, and they are very happy together. When a kiwi invites one of us, he/she will probably understand that we are a baggage/parcel that cannot be split up, so we're all coming. But come on, who doesn't love Norwegians? Well.. The Norwegians are a funny combination, we're so different! Even though the outsiders probably would say we're all the same. Some of us, also known as Vilde find everything really fascinating. Everything from writing in a notebook to the universe, Yepp - fascinating. However, everyone goes along as the perfect family we are. City Fitness has been like a diamond in all of the Norwegians hearts (minus Thea). Nine sporty teenagers are afraid to gain weight on these nine months, that's for sure. Luckily we have Trine; she's good at telling the others where the ice cream will go, right to our hips! Even though everyone knows she's just joking. We just care about our health’s. (And yeah, we deserve a block of chocolate after every workout). Everyone found Nelson quite small, and we all find it easy to get around. Well, except for Pia who always gets lost, she still struggles to find the bathrooms at Nayland College. We also have Brynhild, has she even heard of traffic lights? Or is she just too cool for them? She always crosses the road without looking; it’s almost a miracle that she’s still alive. In Norway, most of us didn't like (hated) to share our food with others, In other words; ego. But a thing we all have learned so far is that sharing is caring. If some of us ever bring a cake, it’s not only the person who brought the cake who's going to eat it. Luckily we have Anneli and Maja, they always share their food!

Page 34: Nayland college international student yearbook 2014 part 2 of 2

As told, we're been stuck together for a long time. Some of us are already a little bit nervous of the fact that we're not going to see each other every day when we're going back. However, we all have received a parcel from home, by the time we've been here, and sharing is caring, so if someone got "brunost" (brown cheese), hide it! Food, where to begin? Everything from amazing chocolate deals at countdown, to a delicious lunch in town - we love it. "It was a chocolate deal at countdown again, so I got two Top decks!" - Do we even need to guess who this chocolate lover is? Well, hello Frida. The funny thing is, if you don`t find a Norwegian either at city fitness or in town (often upstairs at Starbucks), something terrible must have happened. The Norwegians are known for heaps of things, first of all: They are always up for a party, especially our own party queen, Silje. Wow, she's an amazing dancer. Second, not a single day goes by without us hearing Jonas say "She is sooo hot!". Yeah, we're all hunters. We’ve only been here for three months, but we’ve already got strong friendships. We all enjoy every sunny day in Nelson, even though we can admit we miss Norway a bit. Everyone also agree that our decision to go on exchange has been the best choice we’ve ever made. Hokitika

I went to Hokitika on 25 October – 30 Octber 2013.

Miss Dara came with me.

She made Thai food for me and we went to the high mountains. The

next day we watched the nature and seals at the beach. We also

visited the jade factory. I bought presents for my mum, my dad and

my sister. In the evening we were watching movies. I like Hokitika.

It’s very beautiful.

My trip to Golden Bay

I spend one Weekend with my host family at Golden Bay in a beach next to the

sea. I loved it, it was all day sunny. We made damper, played Frisbee and were

hanging around in the sun. We went for few quick swims. I saw a baby seal and

she was so playful, she was swimming around me.

Looking back to Wellington,

where we first met.. first

impressions: Pauli happened to

be a real crazy 1D-fan ..lol (yes

- we all know she sometimes is

a little weird <3), Miri was so

smily and happy all the time,

and Katja was quite a bit older

than all of us; we all come from

different parts of Germany, and

yet we are kind of so alike.

We got to know each other

so fastly, spent so many

times together, had so much

fun and we always knew,

that whatever there is to

share...

the other girls will listen, laugh at you and tell you

to stfu and calm down. We shared a lot of

wonderful NZ moments, that we are never gonna

forget.. such as skydiving, nightswimming on

summercamp, heaps of sloverz and days at the café

and beach. ´The place to be´ in mornings before

finally going to school?! Paulis house, which

became our 2nd home.

KATJA PAULI

MENI MIRI

Those three r the best! They made my time in

nz to the best time in my life and also to the

funniest. I cannot imagine living without them

anymore. Meni, Pauli and Katja aren't just

friends they r like sisters for me - I can always

come to them, talk to them, laugh with them

and I know I'll never lose them, cause we r

family :)

...

Three girls that seem to be so crazy and

different but in the end just good friends

to me. Even if it is hard sometimes to

follow them and understand their way of

life I know that I can always count on

them and that they are always there for

me. Those three girls, who made my stay

in NZ what it is like in the end, and gave

it so much personality and character and

made it one of the best times of my life!

I can just thank Pauline, Mena and

Mira for becoming my own little

NZ family. <3

WE LOVE U

NEW ZEALAND!

Pauli, Miri and Katja have been as close as

family to me for the last 4 months of my life..

i cant imagine not laxing and joking around

with them anymore because a part of me will

miss them every day.

Miri is one of the most positive persons i

have ever met, Katja is just the best person to

go and talk to and Pauli is always keen on

doing anything crazy you come up with - that

is what i love so much about them.

They make New Zealand feel like home.

Thank you. <3

I think my time in New Zealand would

ve never become this amazing without

Miri, Katja and Meni! Even tho I have

only known them for have a year it feels

like we‘ve been friends for such a long

time. I cant imagine living without them

anymore. I‘m gonna miss every single

thing about them but I know that we‘ll be

catching up back home in Germany! <3

HOW TO SURVIVE A SOUTH ISLAND TOUR

1. Don’t forget your designer wallet on the bus, the first day of the tour in Christchurch. (Make sure you don’t put keys, ID, bankcard, back-up bankcard, money and address to your stay for the night in the same place…….)

2. Be open to any creative and\or unusual sleeping alternatives. 3. Be extra careful not to wear “sneans” unless you want to be taken as a tourist from

Poland. 4. Be friendly when you meet the people you are to travel with. One of them might turn

out to be $$ rich $$ and\or **famous**. 5. Remember to bring your raincoat, social antennas, wanderlust and other necessary

equipment. 6. Make sure the Italian(s) feel included and that they are informed about travelling

details and that YES we are travelling in a bus and YES we are sleeping in youth shelters with common showers. (They may disappear for unknown reasons the next day)

7. Make sure you experience and learn (and teach ;) ) trivial tricks and new culture from your room mates (like earplugs in nose, salsa or twerking)

8. Be prepared to hold on to your seat and buckle up, because travelling on a bus is highly dangerous. The bus door may, for instance, open at any given time, for no specific reason, making the bus like a spacecraft with and open window, the vacuum killing everything and sucking out all life inside, smothering your intestines and crushing your lungs. ☺

9. Be open to new culture, and try to use the opportunity to learn some new language (including Italian body language NOTE: be quick, you never know when the Italian will disappear).

10. When meeting new people, try bonding over mutual interests (like body waxing or cosmology).
