A new member in the inter-

national office!!

As you probably all know Jo is leaving Nayland College after 12 years to work in a family business. For all of you who don’t know what Jo’s job is, here a short expla-nation. Jo did all the administration work in the international office. Such as organ-ising all the insurance details when you get injured, helping you apply for the visa, ac-cepting you here at Nayland and much more. Jo told us that over the years quite a few things changed. The numbers of students increased, her office finally changed from a 3x3m room to a big and friendly office, the students became more demanding but one thing that always stayed the same was the warm and friendly en-vironment. She will miss all the people here. The students and all the staff members. We just wanted to say thank you for the amazing job you did, Jo!! You always helped us with everything. Jo’s replacement is the lovely Sytske. I’m sure most of you have already met her but here is a short introduction. Sytske is from Holland (but lived in NZ since 2011) and recently moved to Nelson

with her husband and her 6 years old daughter Ruby. Sytske enjoys working with internationals and she thinks that her job now is a great opportunity to meet new people from different cultures although we are quite far away from every other country. I’m sure you will perfectly fit into the ‘international team’ and enjoy working here at Nayland. Have a great time!! :) Lena Ramm

To ease the farewell for international students when they leave, at the end of every term Nayland sets up a

meeting to give everyone the chance to say goodbye.

Gavin Millar, whose involvement as the international program coordinator started at the end of 2012, thinks

that it is a very emotional time for the leaving students. "Sometimes you're only here for a little time, some-

times people are here for a long time, and a lot of people pass through a lot of their friends," he said. This is the

reason why he decided to set up a farewell event at the end of each term instead of only once a year, so that

every international student could at least attend to one of them. "For me it's just a really nice way every term to

say goodbye."

The Farewell are traditionally set up in the Boathouse in Tahuna. "It's a really cool venue," Mr Millar said about

the location. "When you try to do something and set it up as a tradition, like a farewell, then it's really good to

have a place that is special in some way."

Since Mr Millar took on the organisation of the Farewells, there have been a few changes in the evening pro-

gram. While it used to be rather an opportunity to have coffee, biscuits and a chat, it now appears more formal.

"It's now become a chance for students who leave us to do something to acknowledge the time here."

This can be done by presenting a slideshow of pictures, having a performance or even just saying a few words

about the stay. Also, the International Department prepares a slideshow that contrasts each a baby photo and a

current photo of the leavers. "I like looking at the baby photos, I think it's really cute," Mr Millar said.

At the Farewell at the end of term 1, for most of the students a highlight of the evening was a song for Mr Mil-

lar, sung by the leaving Norwegian students and a few Germans. The students rewrote the song text of the Cup

Song and thanked Mr Millar for his commitment. "Mr Millar does great work," Lisa Birkenbach explained. "I

think that was really nice and I think everybody should actually do it."

For the leaving students it is not easy to say goodbye to what has become a second home. "I'm going to miss

most the amazing people here," Lisa said. "Just everything, honestly." To Mr Millar, forming relationships is

what the exchange is all about for international students. "I hope they make lasting friendships, " he said.

One of the things Nayland gives leaving students to take away is a folder filled with things that should remind

them of their time in New Zealand. "The little booklets students get given used to just have a report in it and a

banner," Mr Millar said. Now they also include a poem about friendship and 30 little Quotes by Dr Seuss.

"Sometimes people ask for photos and we do a group photo," Mr Millar added.

He also has another quote to give leaving students on their way. "It goes 'If it is to be it is up to me'," he

said. "It's true," Lisa agreed. "You do what you want and it's only up to you."

Farewell lightens goodbye for students

My trip to Golden Bay

I spend one Weekend with my host family at Golden Bay in a beach next to

the sea. I loved it, it was all day sunny. We made dumper, played Frisbee and

were hanging around in the sun. Although went for few quick swims. I saw a

baby seal and she was so playful, she was swimming around me.

EMINEM CONCERT—AUCKLAND

Slim Shady/Eminem/Marshall Mathers en-

tered the stage, and the crowd, including

the girls, went absolutely crazy. They

screamed, sang, jumped and shouted like

only real Eminem fans can. Mr. Mathers

played for one and a half hour, and each

song was as good as the next.

The girls couldn´t feel their feet at the

end of the concert, nor could they speak,

but they didn´t care. They had just seen

Slim Shady/Eminem/Marshall Mathers per-

form on an outdoor stage, what more could

they possibly wish for? Their dream had

come true, and it was amazing and beyond

words.

NZ birds One reason for choosing New Zealand was the seven parrot species which can be found there. However, soon after I arrived I realized that it is hard to find parrots in the wild and all the other birds are interesting as well. So I changed my focus from just parrots to all native birds in New Zealand. Every time I went for a walk in the bush my camera was at my side ready to take a picture of yet another bird. During my stay I had many opportunities while traveling around. In October I finally saw my first parrot. It was a Kea (Nestor notabilis) up at the Cobb. Just a few weeks later I had a perfect opportunity to take pictures of a flock of Kea in Milford Sound. Due to their curiosity they aren’t exactly loved by the locals (probably because Kea and men have different opinions about the use of sealing rubber on cars), but tourists like them even more. In a bird park in Queenstown I saw Blue Ducks, Black Stilts and Kiwi. But my favorite was the Antipodes Island parakeet (Cyanoramphus unicolor). These birds just live on the Antipodes Islands to which access is prohibited. Furthermore they cannot be seen in any zoo in Europe. So it was my only chance to see them. In the summer holidays I did the Heaphy Track. Untouched nature in the midst of Kahurangi National Park sounds promising. There I’ve seen my first New Zealand Robin (Petroica australis), Tomtit (Petroica macrocephala) and a group of Riflemans (Acanthisita chloris). These just 5 to 6 g light birds are New Zealands smallest birds and usually hop up and down tree trunks to catch little insects. Despite the fact that I didn’t see any parrots the Heaphy Track with its varying landscape is one of my favorite experiences. In Dunedin I went to Taiaroa Head to see the only mainland albatross colony worldwide. It was my first of two visits. The parents were incubating their egg and from the viewing platform three nests could be seen. Later in April when I returned I saw three chics waiting for their parents to feed them. Northern Royal Albatrosses (Diomedea sanfordi) breed only every second year and spend the other year entirely at sea. In fact they are just going on land for breeding and spend their first 5 years without touching the ground at all. In April I finally saw my second parrot specie in the wild. A Yellow-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus auriceps) at Haast passes. However, it happened too fast to take a picture. New Zealand’s birds are endangered. Introduced predators, such as stoats, possums and rats, and habitat loss lead to a decrease of birds all over the country. However, there have been some amazing recoveries. The Chatham Island Robin (Petroica traversi) was reduced to just one breeding pair and Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) and Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus) were thought to be extinct, but all three species have done a remarkable recovery. Every second weekend I went up Marsden Valley to check and bait traps. A program which started 10 years ago has created an oasis for birds and now New Zealand Robins, Tomtits, Weka and Riflemans can be found just 20 minutes by bike from school. Anton Mothes

Nelson became during the last couple of month my second home. It is a lovely area to stay as there are heaps of different places to explore. Which I would recommend as an international student. One of the most stunning places in the area is the Abel Tasman. It overwhelms with golden beaches, beauti-ful tracks through the bush and the blue water. The Abel Tasman was the first trip I did with my Outdoor Ed-ucation Class this year. And it was one of the most stunning places. " My highlight on the camp was watch-ing the sunrise on the sea" the German international student Heiner says. It is a great spot for the outdoors

since there are several opportunities to discover the national park for instances in kayaks on the sea. Another nice trip I would recommend is a bike ride to Rabbit Island on a sunny day. This island is a beautiful spot very close to Nelson with a long beach and also a mountain-bike track. It takes about one and a half hours to get there. It is a beautiful ride along the coast and finally at the island there is nothing better than to jump into the sea. Remember to take something to drink and to eat. There are some more BBQ pits if you want something more extravagant. Inter-national student Jasmin said " The trips to Rabbit Island with my friends were the nicest" Another nice day trip with friends or host families is to Lake Rotuiti. It is a stun-ning place in the mountains and in the winter there can be snow. At the lake are some nice places for lunch and then to work your food off a walk can be done on the small track along the lake. For people not keen on biking or hiking there is heaps of stuff to do in town. One thing everyone must visit is the famous Nelson Market on Saturday. The stalls are charming and you can buy heaps of souvenirs for family and friends. There are plenty of food stalls and you can get food from most home countries too. Of course there are heaps of restaurants in town where you get good food as well. My favourites are Lambrettas and Smugglers. And the best pizza in town is at Stefano's. " My absolute favourite shop in town is Yogi's because I get the best frozen yogurt there" international student Lena says. Probably one of the most famous place in Nelson is the Centre of New Zealand. It is close to town and it is great to walk up there. It takes about 20 minutes to walk up there but it is worth it. Up there you will have an amazing view over the whole area, Nelson, Rabbit Island and Abel Tasman. Nelson offers heaps of different things to do and I enjoyed my time so much due to the trips I made and I would recommend you to do as many trips as possible to discover the beauty of New Zealand.

Bucket List - places to discover before departure

The time in New Zealand was awesome. I learned heaps of stuff, made new friends, learned to enjoy the outdoors of New Zealand with Outdoor ED. I really enjoyed subjects like Outdoor ED or Earth and Marine Science because we did a lot of practical things. Actually we did in Outdoor ED most of the times activities outside or we prepared for a trip. I really like the spontaneity of Kiwi’s. For example once we wanted to go to the climbing hall, so we did it. Compared to Germany it’s easy as. A highlight of my New Zealand stay was definitely the two Outdoor ED camps. The first one, which was in the Abel Tasman, was absolutely stunning. We had great weather which made it awesome. The sea kayaking wasn’t that hard and we did at the second day a trip to Cleopatra’s Pool which was bloody cold but amazing.

The second camp was really cool as well. The walk to our overnight stay was amazing because part of the forest looked like forests from “The Lord of the Rings”. We slept under a stone shelter and did a night walk while the full moon was shining. The snow covered mountains gloved in the moonlight. The next day we walked to the summit of Gordon’s Pyramid I had two new subjects that I haven’t had before: Outdoor Ed and Earth and Marine Science. I was in the Kiwi Earth and Marine Science where I was the youngest due to the fact that it was a level 2 course. Mr. Bloomfield was an amazing teacher because he taught in a nice way but unfortunately he left at the end of term one. The relieve teacher was okay but I just did lessons on the board and we had to read or write in the book which was pretty boring… Due to the fact that I was with my family in New Zealand I made a lot of trips at the weekends which were wonderful because I had the opportunity to see a lot of New Zealand. In addition we traveled in the holidays around the South Island. In other subjects like geography we did great things as well. In the second term we went to Kaikura and did there geographical research but we did also whale watching. I really like the school system in New Zealand and would love to come back. By Finn Frerks.

Outdoor Ed camp Anchorage 2014 Every level two international class was going to do a camp in the first term in the Abel Tasman national park for three days. Our class started preparing for the Outdoor Education Camp weeks ago, we discussed what foods are good and practiced to take, and we practiced how to steer a kayak and how to paddle correctly. We learned most of our skills in the Nayland pool with the kayaks. Then, after weeks of preparation the day came to leave. We all met at the outdoor rooms in block four at 8:30 on a Monday morning, looking forward to three sunny days in the Abel Tasman park in Anchorage. We loaded up the kayaks and discussed the plan for the day. After an hour drive we all arrived in Mapua and unloaded the kayaks and the hiking bags. We split the group in half, so that always one half hikes and the other group kayaks. I was in the kayak group. We got our kayaks with a tractor to the beach while the other group started walking. We had paddled about three hours when we arrived at "sandy bay", that was where both groups met and swapped over, so the kayakers were hiking now and the hikers, kayaking. After two hours of hiking we reached Anchorage, our home for two days. At about 6 o' clock the kayak group arrived as well and we started to build our tents and prepared some food. We managed the cooking quite easily and were all filled up when we went to bed. The next morning some of us decided to wake up very early to take the kayaks and paddle out of the bay to see the sunrise, while the others were sleeping. We had to wait for maybe 10 minutes for the sun. It was a great picture; golden and red stripes. Then we went to a little island, where we could see some seals. Then after two and a half hours of paddling we arrived back in the camp. Finally we all had some breakfast; we went to Cleopatra's pool, where a natural water slide is. The water was very cold so we didn't stay long. When we got back to the camping ground we decided to go to Silent bay. The water was very nice and warm and after we played some group games we kayaked/ walked back to our tents. After we cooked some dinner we went down to the beach. We wanted to walk to a cave, but it was high tide so we had to swim. The cold swimming tour was definitely worth it, it was really beautiful with all the glow worms. The usually dark cave was full of small lights on the wall. It was a very interesting cave, but we had to go back because of the high tide. We didn't want to get stuck in the cave. So we swam back to the beach and then went to bed early to be fit, because we were going to leave this Friday morning, and that means that we had to kayak, or hike the whole way back. We started putting the tents down after we had breakfast. It went relatively fast, the real challenge was to get everything back in the kayaks and the hiking bags. We finally started our long trip back to Mapua bay and then from there with the vans back to school, which took us about seven hours. Finally we arrived wet, hungry and looking forward to a nice hot shower. Our three days in the Abel Tasman national park was a fun adventure. By Heiner Prey

This letter is written by Moritz Weiss and Mathias Neidhart (check our Facebook). This letter is written on 03.07.2014, 3 days before we are going to leave this amazing country NEW ZEALAND! We both just really enjoyed the time here at Nayland College and wrote obviously only good grades O_o. Nah we are joking, of course we had some good grades, of course bad grades too! In case we had bad grades or if something bad happened there was always somebody there! Like for example Mr. Millar or Mrs. Gibs and we both wanted to say thanks for your support during our time at Nayland! And by the way Nayland College is awesome if you want to learn for life, improve your English and of course education! Moreover the students are all so nice and accept you on the 2nd day like you have been best friends! So that was our experience!! We have been on two outdoor education trips. Both of them were just amazing. The outdoor ED teachers were all the time relaxed, in a good mood and showed us interesting things in the outdoors. It always made you feel excited for the next outdoor lesson. All in all we both recommend OED. We always had heaps of fun and learned a lot. Outdoor education was really worth choosing! ;)

Kaiserschmarrn

Kaiserschmarrn is a traditional Austrian dessert. It is a caramelized pancake made with rum-soaked raisins, eggs, flour, sugar, and butter. The pancake is split into pieces while frying, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served hot with plum sauce on the side or on top. For 4 servings, PREP 45 mins - COOK 15 mins - READY IN 1 hr.

1/4 cup raisins 1/4 cup rum 1 cup whole milk 5 eggs 1/4 cup white sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract salt 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar, plus more for dusting plum preserves for serving

Directions: In a small bowl, combine raisins with rum and let soak 30 minutes then drain. In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the milk, eggs, white sugar, vanilla, and salt. Gradually whisk in the flour to make a smooth batter. Stir in the drained raisins. In a large skillet melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Pour the batter into the skillet and cook 5 to 6 minutes, or until the pancake has set and the bottom is golden brown. Turn over the pancake and cook 3 minutes, or until this side is also golden brown. Using a spatula or two forks, tear the pancake into bite-size pieces. Drizzle in the melted butter and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Turn up the heat to medium high and use a spatula to gently toss the pieces for 5 minutes, or until the sugar has caramelized. Sprinkle with additional confectioners' sugar and serve with plum preserves.

Art - A blind man’s profession

Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.

I want to thank the art teacher of Nayland College for teaching us that profession. And I want to thank the students, who made this in an awe-some way unforgettable. It was a pleasure being a part of your lessons and I really enjoyed it. You made it

something very special.

School in NZ

Hey my name is Timothy Dietrich and I was an international student at

Nayland College. I had an awesome time here during the six months I was

studying at Nayland. Of course it took me a time to get used to it.

Compared to my school in Switzerland it is a huge difference but

actually only in a positive way. I realized how much relaxed the teachers

and the students treat each other. For example I wrote a PE exam and

got a merit instead of an excellence, which actually isn’t too bad. The

problem was that I just mixed up something in a hurry which I actually

would have known. So in the end of the term I was allowed to repeat the

test verbal because the teacher knew that I could have had an

excellence, so he just gave me a second chance. Because of that I

actually got the excellence I was working for. That motivated me to work

even harder for all of my other exams. This all would not have been able

in the school I go to in Switzerland. I wouldn’t have got the grade I

actually deserve although I would have actually known all the answers.

This was a very interesting experience and only a small example of all the

cool things that happen in this school.

In my opinion this is an absolutely awesome school with a very high level

of support to their students..

Now I would like to thank all the teachers and students at Nayland

College, who made my life so wonderful with their presence and their

support.

Greetings

Timothy Dietrich

My favourite memory of my stay in New Zealand

I must say that I haven’t got A special memory about New Zealand as everything during my stay there was awesome but as I am asked to choose, I’ll have too.

Thinking about it, I’m pretty damn sure that the greatest memory that I have from NZ is the people and all the friends that I made there. I’m talking about Alina, Lina, Sander, Mikkel, Linnea, Nicolas, Anna etc… Those laughs and afternoons together were cool. I really appreciated when everyone came to my place for my last night there. I felt something special and will always thank you for coming. Another great point was seeing people coming to the airport the next morning just to say goodbye. Playing for the soccer team of Nayland College was an unforgettable experience just as with Suburbs with Nicolas, Maurice and Sander. Enjoy your stay in NZ and hope to see most people next year during my European Tour.

Cheers from Jordan.

Hello! Our names are Alina, Theresa and Laura, but we are usually called

Bob, Ted and Lol. We came from Italy. Germany and Austria in July. We

were not really close at the beginning, just normal friends that in Sep-

tember decided to go on an adventure together, the 14 days South

Island Tour with Flying Kiwi.

On September, the 28th 2014 I went to Cirque Du Soleil TOTEM in Auckland. Besides that it took me almost two hours to get there and that I had to ask several people how to get there, it was pretty awesome. The acts were wonderful; sometimes I

even liked it better than the show I saw last year in Bratislava. Once more I felt the absolute desire to work for this company, later on in my life; to create make-ups and costumes like that.

I think even though Cirque Du Soleil tickets are really expensive, they are worth every penny you pay!

The Art of Pole Dance

For us coming to New Zealand was all about trying new things and getting to know ourselves better. Pole Fitness was the perfect opportunity for us to do so, as it is all about fitness,

acrobatics and fun. Not only did we gain confidence and strength through Pole Dance, but also learned to trust

each other, which really strengthened our friendship. We know now that we can always rely on each other and that we got each others back.

Through Pole Fitness we found our own little family within the Pole community, which always cheered us up if we didn’t nail a move the first time we tried and always helped us mentally to

push our boundaries to improve ourselves. Starting with Pole Dance made our exchange extra special, as we not only established a strong

friendship but also achieved something we never thought we could. Isabel and Anna

Pole Facts

1. Most pole dancers, regardless of age, are in the best shape of their lives.

2. There are many different types of pole dancing.

3. Some are pushing for pole to become an Olympic event. 4. You need your skin exposed to grip the pole. 5. It can be dangerous without proper training.

6. Men can (and do!) pole dance. 7. “Not having upper body strength” or being “curvy“ is not an excuse to not try it.

8. Even though pole dancing is growing in popularity, we still can be judged. 9. Pole Dance is hard work and bruises, burns and scrapes are inclusive.

10. The community is very tight-knit. 11. Pole dancing is emotionally healing.

12. There’s an immediate reward for your effort

13. It combines many types of exercise

14. It targets your whole body

15. There’s something for everyone

16. It’s addictive!

My South Island Tour I had an awesome South Island Tour with 13 other internationals. The first day we met in Christchurch and went to Kaikoura by bus. The next morning we could either go to whale watch (where we didn’t see any whales but king

albatrosses) or for a walk to find some seals. After an overnight stay in Nelson we went to Abel Tasman National Park where we were kayaking and

hiking in fabulous weather. On our way to the west coast we saw some beautiful landscape like rainforest covered mountains and the rivers glinting in sunlight. Our next stop was the Pancake Rocks with their blowholes. It

was quite noisy how the water crashed against the rocks. And we had also a little cheeky visitor (it is not a kiwi). This evening we went also to Franz Josef Glacier. The first glacier I have ever seen! The next day those guys who weren’t skydiving had a look at Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson. After a

Haast River Safari in bad weather we visited Puzzling World and watched two in our group bungy jumping. After some snow-trouble the next morn-ing we finally got to the stunning Milford Sound. This evening I ate my

first Ferg Burger. So delicious! On our free day in Queenstown we made our way to the film locations of Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and many more

on horseback. On our last day we had a good look over Queenstown from the Gondola and some funny rides with the Luge. Before we got back on our planes we had the chance for some shopping at the Container Mall in

Christchurch. It was the best time I had so far in New Zealand and I have also made some great new friends.

Year 10

I spent my 5 month at Nayland

College in Year 10. In the beginning

I was really shocked and kind of

sad because I was the only one of

my friends in year 10 which meant I

was the only one who had to wear

uniform.. Everyone elsewas in Year

thing that could have happened to

me! It was great that we had real

everyone in my classwas really nice!

On the 27th of October I flied to Christchurch with Luci, my previous host sister.

There I joined my previous host family

And we went to one of their friends house! They already had been there for the weekend.

We visited Christchurch, we went to Victoria Park, we went shopping in the big Mall of Christchurch, Westfield

Riccarton.

But we didn’t go there for tourism and shopping. The reason why we went to Christchurch was to watch Lorde

in concert with Luci, Meg and Nick! So we took part to...

This was one of the most amazing experience I have had here in New Zealand since I arrived 3 months ago!

Lots of people told me that it will not be that great because Lorde’s music is not really the one you dance to.

But actually it was a real entertainment!

Those two days in Christchurch were amazing, even if it wasn’t a long trip, I discovered another part of the coun-try and I enjoyed the concert of a New Zealand Interna-

tional star!

Outdoor Ed - the best subject in the world! If you come to New Zealand and don’t have Outdoor Education you will miss out. Outdoor Ed is more than just sitting in a classroom studying. You learn how to strengthen team work, organization and surviving 3 days in the outdoors with no more than a backpack on a trip. In Term 3 we went on a camp for 3 days in the Kahurangi National Park. For most of us it was the first time to sleep outside under a shelter not having anything else to eat than what we took. We stayed near Lake Sylvester and tramped to Lake Lily which involved 8 hours of tramping. Fortunately we had 3 days of beautiful sunshine. The highlights were: a night walk to the lake and observing the stars and ice axing through the snow. The Abel Tasman Camp, which followed in Term 4 was amazing. It was a kayaking and tramping camp. While half the group was hiking, the other half was kayaking. In the beginning we had wind and rain but therefore awesome waves. The remaining days were sunny and we explored really nice places in the Abel Tasman National Park, e.g. the Cleopatra Slide and a glowworm cave. Outdoor Ed made us experience the most beautiful scenery of New Zealand we would not have been able to see otherwise.

Exchange

Exchange is change. Rapid, brutal, beautiful, painful, colourful, amazing, unexpected, overwhelm-

ing and most of all, constant change. Imagine getting on a plane. 32 hours later you get out and

everything is different. New life, new language, new family, new people, new lifestyle, new tradi-

tions and culture, new school. Everything is new except the things in your suitcase. You know how

it feels to be on your own. Away from home with no one you really know and to rely on in the be-

ginning. You find out that you can actually do it. Exchange is thinking. All the time about every-

thing. Thinking about the different clothing, the different food, the different language. About why

you are here and not back home. About how everybody at home is doing about this whole time-

zone-thing. About what’s right and what’s wrong and about who you want to be and what you

want to do.

It’s feeling the connection between you and your host family grow. It’s known in which cupboard

the peanut butter is.

You get to know so many people from everywhere, that might think similar to you and have same

interests because you all are in the same situation. They can understand what you are going

through.

An exchange is one of the best things you could possibly do! Just taking opportunities when they

are offered to you! And see as many places as you can! Exchanges make you richer even though it

is very expensive. Exchange is not a year in a life, it’s a life in a year. It is unbelievable. It is the

best year of your life so far. It is something that you will never forget, something that will be a part

of you. Exchange is growing up. Realizing that everybody is the same, that there are so many

things to do in your life. you just have to do it. It is your life! You are the one who lives it. Take this

chance! It’s worth it in the end and it makes you very happy! Exchange is nothing like you ex-

pected it to be and everything you wanted it to be. There are surprises every day. Exchange is fall-

ing in love with this amazing, beautiful wild country, with it’s fantastic nature. New Zealand is

wonderful. It is paradise. Diverse in it’s landscapes. You can lie on the beach, sunbathing, looking

at the snow covered mountains on the other side of the bay, jump in a kayak and paddle into the

sunset.

It will stay in your heart forever. Your second home. And if you want to, it stays there forever.

Your heart will get bigger and bigger. It is impossible to fill it up. It will just grow...

Golden Bay

Over the holidays I spent one week in the beautiful countryside of Golden Bay, which is situ-

ated in the very north of the south island. I went there together with my host father and lived

in a cottage closed to the shore.

We made a lot of great trips to waterfalls, beaches and to the place where James Cook first

anchored and discovered New Zealand. The best trip was when we went to Farewell Spit,

which is a 26 km long sand shore. We visited Wharariki Beach and enjoyed this unique and

remote area. I was impressed by the different and steadily changing nature and I am looking

forward to go there again with my parents when they come here. Even though we didn’t go

to the lighthouse I enjoyed this trip and the view over the Spit.

Who could have known that we have to travel around the whole world to find our soul mates?

We have had heaps of amazing events and experiences here in New Zealand that we could write about but none of them means as much to us as one thing – our friendship. It is one of those things that we are sure are going to last a lifetime. Even when we can’t see each

other every day anymore we are always going to carry this memory in our hearts. Now this sounds cheesy as, we know, but it’s true. Of course we saw a lot of awesome things, together or alone, but it is the everyday life that brought us so close together – sharing our

deepest thoughts, food, fears, happy moments, food, problems, beds, food, tents, clothes, make-up, money…oh and have we mentioned

food? We don’t know what made us come to Nelson at the same time, whether it was fate or just a coincidence, but we are incredibly

thankful for it.

Nevis Bungee Jump

I am going to dedicate this article to one of my absolute highlights so far in New Zealand: The Nevis Bungee Jump. In the Spring/September Holidays I was on a ten day student tour of the South Island. We went down the West Coast, stayed a few days in Queenstown and came back up the East to Nelson. Every part of the Tour was amazing and the people I met were just wonderful. I had not booked any activities beforehand, but on the first day I signed up for a Bungee Jump. Instead of doing the Kawarau Bridge Bungee, that lies in my family, my mother and her parents (age 70+) have done it at least once, I decided to go all out and do the Nevis Highwire Bungee, thrice as high. On that evening we met some backpackers in

our motel and one of them had just done this exact Bungee Jump, so he showed us the video he bought with it. Seeing how high it actually is really frightened me and my friends who were going to join me. We spent the next days wondering what exactly we had signed up for. By the time we got to Queenstown though, I was way more exited than scared about it. The second of October we went to the AJ Hackett centre and made our way out to the location. They suited us up with the belts and went through the safety instructions, I felt very secure because you really noticed that the instructors knew exactly what they were doing. Next step was going out by gondola to the floating platform. They were playing music that got you pumped up immensely. I had to jump first of our group. The scariest moment was when all was prepared and you waddle out onto the little platform…my thoughts were: things just got real! Good thing is that they do not really give you time to think, but the moment you are out there they count down, 3,2,1…I was looking around at the mountains, and just jumped.. Those first few seconds simply can not be put into words. So I won’t try. That has to be experienced by yourself. It took me a few seconds to grasp the whole situation, and when I did, I started screaming of pure joy and exitement. When they pulled me back up and I saw they offered a second jump for less than half price, I decided to go for it.

Life & Food in NZ: My host mother cooked very well. It was so yum. My favourite food

in NZ is fish and chips.

I really enjoyed my NZ life with my host parents, we had lots of laughs as well ;)

We don't have much of house rules, so I was always relaxing at home.

I don't have to wear an uniform at school here at Nayland College, however I had to

wear an uniform to school in Japan. I really like uniforms so I wanted to wear it in NZ,

but I didn’t have to. I love the NZ education system, because in the NZ education sys-

tem is student centred in the class. Students can also sit anywhere, so they can get

better communication. I think Japanese people need to be more assertive, and it's re-

ally good skill for us.

In addition, kiwi students can make their own time table, and they can take an artistic

subject. For example, outdoor education, drama, photography and hospitality. I've tak-

en outdoor education class before, It was awesome. I've never done it before, so It

was a really nice experience:)

Queenstown

In the spring holidays, I went to Queenstown with my host family and two

friends of mine. The weather was nice the whole trip, and we had a really

great time. We went to an Ice Bar, did the Nevis Bungy and Nevis Swing,

went shopping and took the gondola and luge.

At the restaurant up the gondo-

la. The view was amazing, felt

like we were sitting in a boat on

the sea. Surrounded by water.

We did the Nevis Swing (the

worlds biggest swing, 300m) up-

side down!! Brave girls.

On our way back home, we

stopped in Punakaiki to see the

Pancake-Rocks and blowholes.

It was so fascinating and when

the water went through the

holes we could see a rainbow

on the other side.

South Island Tour

I did a South Island Tour with Flying Kiwi in October. I'm

so grateful that I got to spend two weeks with such an

amazing group of people. I can't describe how much I

enjoyed seeing so much of New Zealand. I saw places I

never dreamed to see myself and all thanks to the

amazing Flying Kiwi Tours that show us the real New Zea-

land and not just the tourist places. I’m so happy that I

had the opportunity to explore this beautiful country

somewhere in the Pacific Ocean so far away from home. I

would definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to

have an fabulous time, meet fabulous people and enjoy

fabulous outdoors. It is definitely something I will always

remember as an important part of this exchange year.

All year long fellow students seemed to assume I’m German. But I’m not. I’m

Swiss. It seems to confuse others.

Everyone’s heard about Switzerland as the neutral country but when it is about locating it on a map they struggle.

Thinking it’s a part of Germany or even Sweden although the only similarities to that are the cross on the flags and the

Sw at the beginning of the name. After a while I gave up explaining that being from Switzerland doesn't mean I can

speak Swedish or that I know the Swedish national dish.

Although I’d consider my name as rather easy some kept calling me Liz instead of Lynn. Now I’m Liz from Germany,

who speaks Swedish to others, who I ’d call my friends, despite the fact they keep forgetting my name and nationali-

ty.

Exchange

An exchange is change. Rapid, brutal, beautiful, hurtful, colourful, amazing, unexpected, overwhelming and

most of all constant change. Change in lifestyle, country, language, friends, parents, houses, school, simply

everything.

An exchange is going from thinking you know who you are, to having no idea who you are anymore to be-

ing someone almost entirely new. You know how it feels like to be on your own. Away from home, with no

one you know or love. And you find out that you can actually do it.

An exchange is thinking all the time. Thinking about those strange differences. About why you’re here and

not back home. About how it’s going to be like once you come back home. How your mother and father are

going to react when you see them again. About who you want to be, what you want to do. And about what

the hell that guy just said.

An exchange is meeting people from all over the world. Those people who are too afraid to talk to you,

and those people that you’re too afraid to talk to. And those people who invite you into their homes, into

their lives. The most amazing people in the whole wide world. Those people from everywhere who know

exactly how you feel and those people who become your absolute best friends even though you only see

most of them 3 or 4 times during your year. Those people, who you want to take home with you at the end

of the year.

An exchange is music. New music; music you will remember all your life as the soundtrack of your ex-

change. Old music; music that will make you cry because all those lyrics express exactly how you feel, so far

away. Music that will make you feel like you could take on the whole world.

An exchange is uncomfortable. It’s feeling out of place, like a fifth wheel. It’s wanting to climb into the big-

ger bed and wait out the storm, but knowing the bigger bed is an ocean and a few thousand miles away.

It’s homesickness, it’s awkward silence and its feeling guilty because you didn’t talk to someone at home.

An exchange is falling in love with this amazing, wild, beautiful country. And with your home country at the

same time, with a new thankfulness.

An exchange is frustrating. Things you can’t do, things you don’t understand. Things you say, that mean the

exact opposite of what you meant to say. Mixing up which language you’re trying to speak and questioning

a word’s existence in your mother language.

An exchange is not a year in your life. It’s a life in one year.

An exchange is the best year of your life so far. Without a doubt. And it’s also the worst. Without a doubt.

Exchange is something you will never forget, something that will always be a part of you. It is something no

one back at home will ever truly understand.

And it is realizing that you can be on your own, that you are an independent person, carrying more wisdom

and world knowledge than most adults that you know. It’s knowing you’ve accomplished things some peo-

ple never accomplish in their lives before you’re even 18.

An exchange is a turmoil of every emotion possible.

An exchange is everything.

Base:

6 egg whites (at room temperature)

A pinch of salt

1 1/2 cups caster sugar

2 tsp. cornflour

1 tsp. vinegar

Topping:

1 cup Berry Compote

3 punnets fresh mixed berries, eg. Raspberries, blueberries and hulled and halved strawberries

To make a pavlova you really need an electric beater and egg whites that are not too fresh. If they are the pavlova will

weep. Heat the oven to 180 C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and mark a circle about 16 cm diameter with a plate.

Place the egg whites into the clean bowl of an electric beater. Add the salt until stiff. Slowly add the sugar with the beat-

er running. Beat for about 10 min at high speed until the meringue is thick and glossy - it should be thick enough not to

fall from the beater. Last of all, whisk in the cornflour and vinegar. Use a big spoon to drop dollops of meringue into the

circled area of baking paper. Form into a circle of meringue, making swirls the spoon on the top rather than flattening to

a neat tidy disc. Bake at 180 C for 5 min then reduce oven temperature to 130 C and cook a further hour. Turn off oven

and leave pavlova to cool in the oven. Pavlova can be cooked a couple of days ahead and stored in an airtight contain-

er, or frozen. To serve, spoon Berry Compote over pavlova and scatter over mixed berries.
