Change is here – and yes, we all know that we have recently gone through very

Abbasi shares with us what he feels about these changes and where he sees NBK

going accordingly.

In this month, we also ask one of our colleagues Manoj Kumar about the essence

of being polite and give you some words of wisdom on the path to a successful life

that comes through the stairs of politeness.

Additionally, we speak to Mr. Ayman Mohammad Ali, Qatar Automobiles Compa-

ny’s General Manager about his 2-decade long career and his greatest and most

Ayman Al-Abbasi on Management Change

Hi everyone, First of all, I would like to thank our PR team for allocating a considerable part of this month’s Insider to this very significant and strategic step which took place on the management level. As you all know, the times are changing and this definitely necessitates every business to build enough internal flexibility to cater for changes. And this is exactly what we have done at NBK, which together with our innovative approach to business, is giving us enough confidence that our continued success story will only get stronger over the short and long terms. I’m sure you are all aware that we have refined our vision and mission and made it more in-line with our aspi-rations for the future. I urge you all to get in touch with Abed Mawass and Conchita Ponce at your earliest in case you haven’t had the chance to see our new vision and mission statements. The purpose of all these changes really is to renew our focus on our core businesses which we have defined into two: Automotive and Construction. Auto is not only about vehicles. It is also about everything surround-ing that such as services, sales and after-sales. And Construction doesn’t involve contracting only but also the product portfolio needed to support it such as ready mix, concrete etc. But that doesn’t mean that we will no longer focus on our other businesses! The needs and challenges of every unit will be addressed properly. Other reasons for change are related to the context of the Qatar. In other words, Qatar is not isolated from the rest of the world, which is witnessing a huge upheaval regionally and globally. Qatar has its own socioeco-nomic dynamics with visions and strategies - the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy for 2011-2016 - in place to guarantee a healthy development for the future. These plans will spawn a gigantic surge in construction and infrastructure and will need to take into consideration the increased influx of expatriates following the recent landmark milestones in sports and other fields such as petrochemicals. So that’s why when we restructured the hierarchy of the company, we decided to have two focal business points or two core businesses which will play a significant role in supporting these national plans. We are re-defining our core businesses to be aligned with Qatar’s vision. So this is all great, I know – but what does it really mean to us here at NBK and to all of you? It means that now we have an even clearer vision for our future too and we are moving towards a more corporate-led or-ganization and the new management board is here to meet the expectations of our stakeholders and particu-larly our shareholders and employees – this is part of our commitment to be one of Qatar’s employers of choice! And so now I firmly believe that if we have to gear our efforts towards achieving these new goals in order for us all to reap the great benefits that are in store for NBK over the new few years! Best, Ayman Al-Abbasi CEO

A Mercedes –Benz Veteran, a guru in management and sales—this month we feature our colleague Ayman Mohammed Ali who shares with us his journey through the world of Mercedes-Benz and some of his most memorable moments both on and off work! Tell us a bit about your career with NBK

At NBK, I’ve had the opportunity to be immersed in the essence of the brand and be able to lead a truly amazing team to reflect the global imagine of the iconic names that NBK represents in Qatar. In 2009, I was appointed GM of NBK Holding. Prior to that in 2005, I was GM of NBK Automobiles with a team of over 350 staff. In 2006, I was GM of NBK & Sons and QAC and Parts Manager at NBK Automobiles between 1998 and 2000.

You've worked a considerable number of years with the Mercedes-Benz brand; what were the best and

most challenging landmarks of this experience?

Mercedes-Benz is a brand that caters to top customers really. At Mercedes-Benz I got the opportunity to work with highly qualified senior personnel from across the world and by the time I joined, an up to 15 per cent in-crease in sales was noted. During my term with the Mer-cedes-Benz team in Qatar, the After Sales Operation and Customer Care centres were established which provided services that exceeded customers’ expectations. Change is here at NBK and with it we are looking for newer horizons on all levels - where do you see the auto business of NBK moving in the future following

this strategic restructuring?

Restructuring means putting forward a proper manage-ment structure to better assist all departments to perform their duties and increase their achievements. I believe this new strategy at NBK is going to do wonders to our already successful operations and we look forward to investing more effort and time in order to see all objec-tives achieved as planned.

On the lighter side - what is your favorite leisure ac-

tivity or hobby?

I love off-road adventures, camping overnight and boat-time with family, swimming, jet-ski and definitely riding with my Harley

Favorite book?

I really don’t have in particular but I read books to broad-en my horizons as much as possible

Greatest music of all time?

I just listen to what my kids are listening to! I practically listen to everything

Favorite country you have visited?

USA! The whole family has been there during summer. We drove for 37 days, 6000km with my wife and 2 kids from up north to Canada then to North America. It was a long tour and we’ve seen beautiful sceneries particularly in Ohio where I studied.

Best advice you've ever had

From a friend: “If you never take a chance in doing any-thing you want to do, you’re a 100% looser. But if you’re doing it, you’re a 50% winner.” Chances are you could be a winner if you try to do it.

Motto in life

Always talk positive, never be negative

“I believe this new strategy

at NBK is going to do won-ders to our already suc-

cessful operations and we look forward to investing

more effort and time in or-der to see all objectives

achieved as planned.”

As the head of the family, he loved us so much that he always put his children before himself and always tried to make us happy. He was also a good provider. I am thankful that I had a father who had taught me to live rightfully. Most of all, he had pro-vided me of what I would need to entail a bright future and better quality of life and that is to acquire a higher education. He believed that it will be the greatest legacy he would left me coz’ the value of education will last a lifetime.”

Itty Cherian Human Resources Coordinator NBK Holding "Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." -Buddha, Hindu Prince and Founder of Buddhism. We live in a world where people always want more. What we have is never enough. We are high-end consumers and obsessed with materialistic wealth. Our houses are filled with stuff that we don't need, yet we find a way to continue buying things. Am I thankful for what I have? Absolutely - I have worked hard to get to this point in my career and lives. I am thankful & fortunate to have my wife who understands me for who I am and values my strengths. I feel extremely fortunate to have parents who are also great leaders and role models. Last but not the least, I am thankful for All “My Experiences” in this beautiful life GOD has given me. Benefits of Being Polite

We all believe in the philosophy that the essence of life is talk-ing. Communicating with others is as necessary as food. If we don’t, we tend to fall ill. Today people are rarely talking. The art of conversation has almost died down. People just usu-ally sit and chat in their office breaks about things that are not even worth thinking about. Lets face it; we all are going to-wards doom where each one of us is talking to pass/kill time. The art of using communication is no more existing. People are concerned about others influence in their lives and not about their influence in others life. It is an unbelievable thing that an effective communication through polite words can have wonderful impact on you and others lives as well. You can win the hearts of many people, climb the corporate ladder, have promotions but not have won-derful relationship with people around you. The path to a successful life comes through the stairs of polite-ness. An act of politeness can do wonders that no monetary thing can do. Let us go deep in the art of efficient speaking by these methods. Talking about ideas and not people It’s truly said, great minds talk about ideas and small minds talk about people. Politeness is an attitude of life. Talking about ideas heightens your politeness towards innovations and stim-ulates your mind too. This is effective for the speaker and the listener both. To start talking about people you can breathe out all negative energies about anyone: latest crush, which dress she wears, which perfume she uses, her bad attitude. The idea is that everything you talk about people usually comes nega-tive. This develops a feeling of self-love and comparison at all means. You do not value your life as much as you do to others. Using intellect instead of the tongue

Usually people chatter on at length not worrying about the im-pact it would have on others. Since people are so occupied in themselves theyd rather talk about themselves only. This insti-gates them to speak rubbish endlessly. Have you ever thought how much of an impact we can have on others by our words? By trying to use our brains before speaking, we will save others sentiments and preserve a healthy relationship between our near ones. Avoiding gossip The one who usually starts a gossip or back-biting about someone does not know that he is the one to have the last laugh. People who start commenting and spreading rumors about others usually end up in a muck of politics and bickering about themselves from the other end. Such people should be avoided at arm’s length. Even listening to gossip is as harmful since the listener had the pow-er to listen to negative communication. This unhealthy gossip-ing could have been stopped if the listener would have ignored the speaker.

Exchange of compliments We should not limit our compliment intake be restricted to our close relatives. People like our helpers such as servants, cleaners, house maids are those on whom we can count on. Speaking politely to them will ensure that your day is made. They are the ones who offer your services to make your life comfortable. So we should make endeavors to enrich their lives by complimenting and praising them. Look for positive things in negative people We all have negative and positive sides. Nobody on this earth has a squeaky clean nature. We all have flaws, however some people are observed negatively by their rude behavior and we become very judgmental about them putting them in the nega-tive category. We should understand that people who are rude have their own weaknesses. They do not choose to be like that. Frustrations at work or domestic front make them act in this behavior. Such people should be offered more help than others comparatively. Talking politely with them will make a difference in their lives and yours too. Feel positive about you all the time Quite often we do not realize that we subconsciously become negative. Pent up emotions and unfulfilled de-sires make us behave rudely towards others and emit negative radiations from the body. Thus we tend to over-react and become rude and harsh to others in some or the other way. This might demolish the social circle that we have. So politeness in the hearts at all means will result in polite atti-tude. Whatever is rested in your heart is bound to come out in the open some or the other day. Make sure you have a prosperous life with a polite attitude and selfless love. This will make you immortal in the hearts of millions as people are going to re-member for your polite words and not by your status. A photographer once clicked a photograph of ex-president of India, Dr. Kalam with a shawl placed on his shoulder. After the photo shoot was over, the photographer rudely took off the shawl and walked off. The President smiled. After being asked about his composed behaviouir, he politely answered that may-be the photographer needed the shawl more than he did, and continued his work. People with big positions come and go but it is only their hum-ble nature that draws millions of people towards them. Their polite words filled to the brim with modesty and love melt the hearts of even the rudest amongst the crowd. By talking polite-ly to all we can make an impact on others lives.
