Eid Mubarak
Ramadan Mubarak, dear col-leagues! In this month of charity and mag-nanimity, I would like to extend my greetings, on behalf of NBK, to you and to your respective fami-lies and loved ones. I hope this month to be one filled with heart-felt blessings. Allow me also to reiterate the sig-nificance of your role as NBK team members in the society. As corporate citizens, we need to in-corporate within our business practices a solid commitment to supporting the welfare of our community and I urge you to vol-unteer for the NBK Ramadan Goodwill Drive to make this hap-pen. As we near the threshold of the fourth quarter, I would like to quickly brush upon those past few months. The financial crisis has become
our daily talk. Yes, we cannot hide it or run away from it. We just need to face it. And we did. We still are and we will have to con-tinue braving it with the help of each and every one of you. We know it has been a hard year. We've seen you worried and we've felt the restlessness. Yet, we all kept fighting and for this we thank you. You've shown unfaltering efforts, hard-work and belief in our or-ganization. At the end, you are all the crux of our success and any achievement we make, no matter how small or impressive, lies in our true team-spirit which is a hallmark of NBK's corporate cul-ture. Those are tough days and storms might put our patience and faith into test yet again. Here's when your commitment and support are needed the most. You've proved it before and now it's time to put into action every bit of skill, talent and knowledge you've acquired so far for we're all too familiar with the saying that goes "together we stand; divided we fall". I wish you all the best as we move forward – Keep it up! Regards,
Hussein Al-Siddiqui Chief Operation Officer Non Auto 2

SAP Key Users for Finance With the success of the SAP Key User Training Program for DBM, we’re taking the same approach with the Finance department in building a Key User team who will share their knowledge and expertise on SAP with their colleagues. Eight Key Users were identified to handle different topics in the SAP Finance module, On the 17th of August 2009, a kick-off meeting and a train-the-trainer’s work-shop was conducted for the first half of the group. In this workshop, the Key Users learned the different facilitation skills and various training techniques. They also had various activities which included a short impromptu presentation in front of the group. Another session of this workshop will be conducted to cover all Key Users and help them prepare in this new initiative.

MATTER U-Matter! NBK invites each and every one of you to share their thoughts, views and points of interest on a monthly basis. This month, our colleague Mahmoud Al-Moghrabi shares his views on winning strategies
Winning Strategies
“The strategy of the organization should
be clear and plain for every member in
the organization to know what the
company is trying to achieve, what the
goals are, and what strategies are being
followed, etc.”
Dear colleagues, During the last few weeks, I have been engaged in reading some very interesting articles and books about implementing business strategies and how to make most use out of a good strategy. Most authors carry the same essence on this subject, “Winning”. A winning strategy formulation and implementation is a careful blend of scientific analysis and strategic thinking needs to be addressed at two different but interrelated levels, the organizational level and the individual level. The main three elements of the individual level are: • Holistic understanding of the organization
and its environment • Creativity • Vision for the future of the organization In other words, the strategy of the organization should be clear and plain for every member in the organization to know what the company is trying to achieve, what the goals are, and what strategies are being followed, etc.
Moreover, with employees’ awareness of the company’s strategy, we are hoping to make them feel more loyal in order to have them try to develop the internal processes in their field within the organization in which to sustain the strategy plan. Due to the above, I do recommend, if possible, for our top management to share some of their plans and strategies with the staff which will also increase the staff knowledge by having some of the senior level experiences.

In keeping with its inherent commit-ment to continue contributing to-wards Qatar fast paced economy, Nasser Bin Khaled Holding in July 2006 initiated another successful joint venture called Select Transpor-tation Solutions with Al Mulla Group. Al Mulla Group, one of the largest private sector conglomerates in Ku-wait, was founded in 1947 by the late Abdullah Saleh Al Mulla. Within a short period of time, the company expanded into the automotive, ma-rine products, air conditioning, travel and equipment supply industries. Originally based in Kuwait, Al Mulla Group flourished immensely through-out its 30 years of business until the dawn of a new long-term strategy that promised increased growth op-portunities to the Group. A multina-tional board was appointed and a thorough diversification programme was devised to enable the Group new market entries in the fields of environmental systems, vehicle rental and leasing, fire protection, office equipment, security services, engineering products, computers and insurance consultancy. In early 2005, NBK and Al Mulla Group began exploring the possibility of joint business in the car rental and leasing industry in Qatar. Both groups were guided by a strong be-lief in market’s need for an exclusive vehicle rental and leasing company that defines excellence and pro-motes outstanding customer loyalty through superior services and valu-able quality products. With an innovative business strategy and a willingness to lead,

ROUND & about Neither half-filled nor half-empty is very good! by Alan Weiss, Ph.D., CMC – Founder, Summit Consulting Group
Someone said to me the other day that the problem with the stock market going up is that it may mean inflation is here and the supply of money is out of whack. Yes and my getting business from a new customer may mean that the customer could have used me two years ago but waited until now. I'm still delighted to get the business! Some people have a habit of looking at good fortune and happy events as merely an uptick in their personal cycle of doom, a temporary trip to the surface for a gulp of air before they once again are weighted down in the shipwreck be-low. The susurrus of trouble is their constant, whispering companion. I watched a woman weep once as she moaned that she didn't know what to do with her lottery winnings since she didn't deserve to win, and she would have to agonize about how to share the money with various family members, and that no one would ultimately be happy. (She later realized she had read the ticket incorrectly, and hadn't won $2 million after all, so I guess she could cheer up.)
If you only wallow in the troughs, valleys, and declivities of the roller coaster of life, and you don't rejoice in the view from the peaks and apexes, then you don't really need to be on the roller coaster. You can simply spend life in a trench. If every turn represents potential trou-ble, every new person is a threat, and each new request is a burden, then you're not really going to enliven many parties. You can step outside and ask what goodies life has in store for you today, or you can hide under the covers and hope nothing happens. I love it when clients of mine have asked their legal departments for advice on non-legal mat-ters, because lawyers are trained to be arch-conservatives. If you change nothing, then little bad can happen. If you do nothing, then the chances are no one will take offense. Well, maybe you shouldn't even open the doors or put the lights on, but I'd really prefer to meet customers. The threat of being sued is, to me, minor compared to the threat of be-ing ignored. I'm reminded of the famous defini-tion of Puritanism: The dread fear that some-one, somewhere, is enjoying himself. Enjoy life, take big gulps, and trust that oppor-tunity is to be seized. The person extending their hand may well be trying to do you a favor and is not attempting to steal your wallet.
