    Illumination of Indoor Areas

    Procedure

    1. ObjectiveThis standard establishes the average minimum illumination values for services at interior areaswith artificial lighting on commercial, industrial, educational, sporting or other activities.

    2. Complementary DocumentsThe documents listed below shall be considered when using this standard:

    NBR 5382 Illumination of Indoor Areas Verification Test Method

    NBR 5461 Illumination terminology

    3. DefinitionsThe technical terms used in this standard are defined in items 3.1 and 3.2 below and on NBR

    5461.

    3.1 Illumination LevelIt is the limit of the light influx at the surface around a given point when the surface are

    tends to zero.

    Note: the illumination level is determined according to NBR 5382.

    3.2 Working areaArea where suitable lighting conditions are required for the performance of visual work.

    4. General Conditions4.1 The illumination level shall be taken at the working area. If this cannot be determined, it is

    assumed to be a horizontal flat surface 0.75m above the floor.

    4.2 In case it is necessary to increase illumination in a limited area at a working place,additional lighting may be used.

    4.3 The illumination level at the remainder work place shall not be less than 1/10 of the levelused at the smaller area, even if the requirement calls for a smaller value.

    4.4 It is recommended that the illumination level at any point of the work area shall not be lessthan 70% of the average illumination level set forth on NBR 5382.

    Note: Classes, as well as types of activities are not fixed as far as recommended illumination level. It

    depends on the designer to define values of adjacent classes/types of activities, according to the

    characteristics of areas and tasks.

    5.2 Illumination level selectionIt is recommended that procedures in items 5.2.1 to 5.2.4 shall be considered on the

    determination of illumination levels.

    5.2.1 Table 1 shows the illumination level values per class of visual work. The correctdetermination of the specific illumination levels shall consider three factorsaccording to Table 2.

    Table 2 Factors to determine suitable illumination levels

    WeightCharacteristics of task and

    user -1 0 +1

    Age less than 40 years 40 to 55 years above 55 years

    Speed and precision not important important critical

    Background reflection above 70% 30-70% below 30%

    5.2.2 Procedure:a) verify each characteristic and determine the weight (-1, 0, or +1);b) add the three values considering their signals;c) If the value is equal to 2 or 3, use the lower illumination level value;

    If the value is equal to +2 or +3, use the upper illumination level value;

    Use medium level value in other cases.

    5.2.3 The majority of the visual work presents at least requirements for medium values.5.2.4 Three illumination levels for each type of activity or location are indicated in 5.3,

    and the value determination shall be according to the following criteria:

    5.2.4.1The medium illumination level shall be considered in all cases5.2.4.2The upper value shall be used if:

    a)

    the work presents a very low contrast and reflection levels;b) mistakes are of difficult correction;c) visual work is critical;d) high performance or high precision are important factors;e) visual capacity of the operator is below average.Note: For the sake of example, one can consider reading a newspaper a low

    importance task and reading a doctors prescription a critical task.

    5.2.4.3The lower value may be used if:a)

    contrast and reflection levels are high;

    b) performance or precision are not important;c) task is occasionally performed.
