NORTH COUNTY OUTLOOK • Nov. 27, 2013Home for the Holidays4

The first Saturday of De-cember is traditionally the day Marysville kicks off its holiday season, with the annual “Merrysville for the Holidays” festivities at Com-eford Park .

This year’s event, set for Dec . 7, adds an element of excitement with a fireworks show immediately following the water tower lighting at 7 p .m .

“It’s just a wonderful night out for families,” said Andrea Kingsford, recreation coordi-nator for Marysville’s Parks and Recreation department . “The event is a great way to

kick off the holiday season and get into the spirit .”

The day begins with a Holiday Craft Show opening at 2 p .m . in the Ken Baxter Community Center at Com-eford Park, located at 5th and State Ave . Shoppers can find unique gifts handcrafted by local artisans, including holiday wreaths, pottery, purses, garden art, jewelry and much more . The craft show continues until 8 p .m . that evening .

The park will be filled with holiday photo booths, ready to capture your own spe-cial memories (bring your

Explosive fun planned for ‘Merrysville’camera!) . Tasty food and beverages provided by local vendors includes the Marys-ville Kiwanis Club, Bite Me Cupcakes, Ivar’s, Pete’s Tof-fee, and Happy Trails Kettle Corn . Don’t miss the deep-fried Oreos, a specialty of the Hillside Church group .

State Avenue comes alive at 6:30 p .m . as the Electric Lights Parade starts at 10th Street and makes it way down to the park . Bundle up to see the lighted floats, fire trucks, marching bands…and of course, cheer Santa’s arrival!

Speaking of marching

bands, the Electric Lights Parade celebrates the debut of the Marysville Getchell Marching Band, under the direction of Ben Peterson .

This year the Parks de-partment partnered with Liberty Elementary School as students participated in a coloring activity . One stu-dent, whose entry was cho-sen at random from all those received, will ride in a shiny red firetruck in the parade .

A fire engine is also Santa’s chosen mode of transporta-tion to the park, where he’ll set up temporary shop to hear the little ones’ wishes .

Carol Kapua, who coor-dinates the Strawberry Fes-tival parade each year, was

selected to lead the Electric Lights Parade as the Grand Marshal . She will also have the important task of flip-ping the switch in the park gazebo to light up the water tower .

As the Marysville City Band plays holiday music, watch the skies over the park for a new fireworks show, made possible with spon-sorship by Judd & Black and E&E Lumber .

Throughout the evening, families can enjoy the bon-fire, hot cocoa and warm community camaraderie of the holiday season .

For more information, visit marysvillewa.gov, or phone (360) 363-8400 .

n Cub Scout Pack 26 participated in the 2012 Electric Lights Parade.

n Santa and Mrs. Claus set up shop at Comeford Park to hear wishes and visit with local children. Be sure to bring your camera!

We love trees . They clean our air and water, store our carbon, and lend a hand in creating many of the things we depend on, from our homes and furniture to our beloved Louisville Sluggers . So we should never, ever cut one down for the sole purpose of decorating our living rooms for the month of December, right?

Actually, wrong . “If you choose a real

Christmas tree over an artificial one, count your-self among the ‘greener’ holiday makers,” accord-ing to James Schroeder,

For a ‘green’ Christmas, choose a locally cut treeEastern Washington pro-gram director for The Nature Conservancy .

Here’s why: 30 million trees are harvested annually for Christmas, out of the 350-500 million growing on tree farms across the coun-try . As each year’s trees are harvested for sale, there are more than ten times as many left standing . A tradition of buying real trees keeps tree farms in business – and their lands covered in forest .

Conversely, about 10 mil-lion artificial trees are pur-chased each year . 90 percent are shipped to the U .S . from

China . Artificial trees are not recyclable . In fact, most are made from a kind of plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is derived from petroleum .

Want to make your already green choice even greener?

Visit a cut-your-own tree farm instead of purchasing a pre-cut tree . That way, you’ll know for certain that it wasn’t shipped in from outside your home state .

Use LED lights—they’ll use as little as 10 percent of the electricity and last for years .

Pass up the non-recyclable

tinsel and make garland out of popcorn and/or cranberries .

Keep using heirloom or-naments year after year, but if you’re still looking to fill

Picking the Right Tree

Buy real, not plastic . Real trees provide all those clean air and water benefits we need .

Buy reputable, meaning a tree from a local, well-established tree seller . That could be your local hardware store, the nearby nursery, or some other well-established business . Here’s why: A fly-by-night operation is more likely to have trees that have not been inspected for inva-sive bugs .

Buy resilient, healthy trees . Run your hand along the branches— they should be flexible . If the needles are falling off, that suggests a tree that’s been dead awhile, either cut too soon or maybe infected by invasive pests .

Dispose of your tree safely . When Christmas is over, don’t just toss it in the backyard to lay around and decompose . If there are any invasive bugs on the tree it may allow them to spread to your yard .

some space on the tree, you don’t have to go the store-bought route . Try turning holiday cards or your child’s artwork into ornaments . Or go for a walk to collect pine

cones or seashells and deco-rate with glue and glitter .

If you are planning to pur-chase ornaments, choose wooden ones over plastic . When you travel during the year, pick up a painted wood ornament from the destination you visit . Soon you’ll have a collection of ornaments that brings back memories of trips with friends and family .

Recycle your Christmas tree whenever possible . Many areas now offer a post-Christmas curbside pickup, and the trees are typically chipped or ground to use in mulch .

n Visit your local tree farm or established tree seller for the freshest Christmas tree.

You know the drill . De-scend upon the tree Christ-mas morning, pass out the beautifully wrapped boxes, and get ready to “ooh” and “aah” over that cashmere sweater or latest electronic gadget or shiny new kitchen appliance .

The truth is, many of us don’t need any of those things . Although the gift-giving is certainly appreci-ated and generous, we end up storing that fancy new Mixmaster in a cupboard somewhere or adding the beautiful earrings to an already overstuffed jewelry box .

A brilliant alternative could very well be the “experience” gift . It turns out, even rabid gifters can deal with this . They know they’re giving you something you want to do, they’re helping you make memories and they’re doing their part to leave a lighter footprint on our planet dur-ing the holiday season .

Instead of ‘stuff,’ give an experienceSome favorite ideas, courtesy of the Nature Conservancy, include:1) Lecture tickets . Fill your brain and impress your friends .2) Campground reservation . Too much for you? Upgrade to a cabin . 3) Zip line adventure . There’s one nearby, right on Camano Island .4) National Parks pass . Choose one of Washington’s many parks, or plan a road trip!5) Zoo or museum membership . Year-round fun; this is the gift that will keep on giving .6) Fill-in-the-blank class . Painting, cooking, photography, maybe an “Insanity” workout .7) Concert tickets . Rock on . Or mellow out .8) Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) membership . A gift for you and the local

farmers you’ll be supporting .9) Restaurant gift certificate . Hint: Keep it local and independent!10) Massage . The holidays can be rough . Go relax .

The third annual Holiday Tour of Lights welcomes guests to experience a lighted wonderland beginning December 5 and continu-ing through Dec . 28, each Thursday, Friday and Satur-day evening at Cedarcrest Golf Course, 6810-84th St . NE in Marysville .

The light show tour is closed Saturday, Dec . 7, dur-ing Merrysville for the Holi-days at Comeford Park .

The winter event has grown each year, with added attractions and more ac-tivities available to entertain families during the busy holiday season . This year two mini-trains, courtesy of Marysville Rotary, will transport visitors through the displays . The 20-minute tour includes a stop at Santa’s workshop .

“The displays are fun for everyone,” noted recreation coordinator Andrea Kings-ford of the Marysville Parks and Recreation Department . “From classic scenes to fun cartoon characters, every-one can relate to the lighted displays .”

While you’re waiting for a seat on one of the trains, enjoy the warming bonfire on the outdoor patio and assemble free S’mores while listening to holiday music . The Hillside Church Band and Northern Sound Choir are among the groups pro-viding free entertainment on the patio .

“It’s really a magical expe-rience,” said Kingsford, “and it’s so easy to do even on a week night . It’s local, fun and affordable .”

The suggested donation for the Holiday Tour of Lights is $3 for children, $5 for adults, or $20 for a fam-ily . No one is turned away,

All aboard for holiday lights

regardless of their ability to pay .

“Many families come up early, have dinner at Bleach-ers’ Grill, and make a night of it,” said Kingsford . “The res-taurant features holiday spe-cials with speedy service .”

The city of Arlington is “decking the streets” with Christmas decorations for the annual Hometown Holidays on Dec . 7, which includes bazaars, bake sales, caroling and a parade welcoming Santa to town, among many other events .

Santa will make his ar-rival with the Santa Parade, which begins at noon . A horse-drawn carriage will bring Saint Nick into town, preceded by floats, drill teams, bands and other local organizations .

Santa comes to Olympic Ave. for Hometown HolidaysThe parade marches down

Olympic Avenue and can be viewed from 3rd Street to Legion Park .

The city is still looking for entrants for the parade . Go to the Events page at www .arlingtonwa .gov to find an application to pre-register . Arlington churches are sponsoring a cash prize for best entry that will be re-warded at Legion Park after the parade .

Santa will light the tree at Legion Park shortly after the parade this year, earlier than

previous years, with all the participants and crowd from the parade available . A lot of new lights and ornaments will help brighten Legion Park’s tree this year .

After lighting the tree, Santa will be available inside ‘The Depot’ at Legion Park for visits and pictures from 1 to 3 p .m .

Small Business Saturday a win for community

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a shopping op-portunity that’s low on stress and big on personal service . Small Business Saturday, promoting the idea of “shop-ping small” is set for Novem-ber 30 this year .

The idea of a national small business promotion was developed by American Express in 2010, and it has been heartily embraced by merchants and consumers alike . In 2012 it’s estimated that shoppers spent $5 .5 billion at small, local busi-nesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving .

Support the local economy

By buying local, your money stays local . This means more jobs for resi-dents and increased tax reve-nues for local governments .

According to a study of the local economy in Salt

Lake City, an average of 52 percent of revenue from local

retailers returned to the local economy, compared with only 14 percent for national chains . Similar findings were reported

with restaurants, with local eateries returning

an average 79 percent to the local community versus just 30 percent for chains .

Even if buying local means spending a bit more, your community may receive a greater portion of your pur-chase in return .

Avoid crazy Black Friday shopping

Black Friday may have some of the best deals of the year, but the packed crowds and insane lines are a turnoff for some . Many of the door-busters advertised by stores are very limited in quantity,

so you’ll line up early with potentially nothing to show for it .

By shopping on Small Business Saturday, you might sacrifice a few tempt-ing deals, but you won’t have to battle other customers to get that unique gift item .

Better for the environment

Whether by boat or plane, shipping goods long distances carries significant environmental costs .

Two-thirds of goods pur-chased by American con-sumers come by cargo ships, which are major polluters . A 2009 article in the Guard-ian says that “just 15 of the world’s biggest ships may now emit as much pollution as all the world’s 760 million cars .”

W hile some small

businesses obviously stock products from faraway places, you’re more likely to find locally made goods, which lowers transport costs and pollution .

More local jobsAccording to the Small

Business Administration, small businesses employ about half of all private-sec-tor employees in the U .S .

Even though large chains create jobs, the downsizing or closure of competing local businesses can mean a net loss in jobs . According to a study on the effects of big box stores on local labor markets, opening a big box retailer actually reduces em-ployment by an average of 150 jobs within the county it’s located .

Shopping at local busi-nesses helps smaller shops keep their doors open and their workers employed .

Unique giftsYou’ll often find gifts in

local shops you won’t find in larger stores, like handmade jewelry or artisan foods . These gifts can add a special touch that you can’t get from mass-produced products .

Local servicesBuying local pertains

to more than just “things .” Service businesses, includ-ing hair salons, accountants, equipment repair shops, carpet cleaners and others depend on neighborhood customers .

These types of businesses develop relationships with their customers, offering that rare commodity of personal service and attention to your satisfaction .

Be sure to check out the many local retailers on Small Business Saturday, and throughout the year, for great gift ideas, everyday items and friendly, personal-ized service .

Send greetings to the troopsThe mailbox for Holiday Mail for Heroes,

a Red Cross initiative, is open through December 6.

Each year the American Red Cross provides assistance to more than 2 million service members and many of our nation’s 24 million veterans . And once a year, volunteers get the joy of delivering holiday greetings to veterans, military families and active-duty service members at hospitals and installations around the world .

The deadline for participating in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program is Friday, Dec . 6 . Cards should be sent to:

Holiday Mail for HeroesP.O. Box 5456

Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456The Red Cross initiative encourages participation in the

‘thank you’ effort, and suggests several ways to be part of the Holiday Mail for Heroes program . In addition to sending cards on your own, you may want to host card-signing or card-making parties .

Here are a few guidelines to help make sure the troops receive your holiday messages:

Ensure that all cards are signed .•

Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member .” •Cards addressed to specific individuals cannot be

delivered through this

program .

Only •cards are being

accepted . Do not send or include letters .

Do not include email or •home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships .

Do not include inserts •of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process .

Please refrain from •choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors .

If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes . Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution .

Gift-buying is as expensive as ever, and millions of shop-pers will be looking high and low this holiday season for a chance to save some money . Why not turn to one of the fastest-growing facets of the retail industry?

Resale is a multi-billion dollar a year industry that continues to see annual growth in the midst of a struggling economy . There are more than 25,000 resale and consignment shops across the country, includ-ing Marysville’s Play it Again Sports .

“These numbers are excit-ing, but they don’t surprise us,” Rob Scott, owner of Play it Again Sports said about the growth of his industry . “We not only provide local families with a value-priced source for quality, in-season sporting goods and equip-ment . We also give them a way to turn last year’s out-grown or unused equipment into cash, rather than simply throwing it away .”

The resale shop offers a wide selection of traditional sporting equipment, ranging from football cleats to golf clubs to snowboards . But they also buy and sell the un-usual and atypical: lacrosse sticks, disc golf targets, and foam rollers . Roughly a third of the Play it Again Sports in-ventory is gently-used items, but the rest is new, name-brand items that include products by Adidas, Nike, and Easton .

Besides offering name-brand sporting equipment at a fraction of the cost, the Marysville retailer provides access to a knowledgeable staff who know and play the games and sports you do and are available for any question you might have .

Resale shoppers are given the chance to make their holiday budget stretch even further than usual . By

Buy or sell sporting equipment at discounted prices

bringing in unused or out-grown sporting equipment to sell, shoppers can earn some store credit towards an inventory of already-discounted items, or receive cash on the spot .

Scott estimates that his store offers a 50-70 percent discount from traditional sporting goods stores . More than 11 percent of American

shoppers frequent outlet malls this time of year in the hopes of finding a good deal, according to the Association of Resale Professionals, but even more are turning to resale shops .

“We also offer a mix of gently-used and new,” Scott said, “which gives our cus-tomers the opportunity to buy the highest quality at the

lowest prices . It’s all about offering value . Whether you are buying or selling, you come out a winner .”

Play it Again Sports in Marysville is located on 36th Avenue, just south of 88th Street . For more informa-tion, visit www.playitagain sports.com .

The north county area has several fantastic local bakeries, with specialties that are sure to delight family and guests. Do yourself a favor and let someone else do the bak-ing this holiday season! Here’s a look at three favorites.

Oosterwyk’s Dutch Bakery

Right off of State Av-enue in Marysville, tucked in among the Third Street storefronts, Oosterwyk’s Dutch Bakery sits com-fortably where it has been for the last 58 years. It provides Marysville with the opportunity to indulge in American, Dutch and Norwegian pastries free of chemicals, preserva-tives and made completely from scratch.

Tuesday through Satur-day Oosterwyk’s doors are open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with trays of freshly baked pastries filling the display cases and the smell of fresh baked bread filling the air.

This holiday season you will find a variety of flavorful and culture rich desserts. Yule Kaka is a traditional Norwegian Christmas bread filled with green and red cherries and flavored with cardamom.

“Kerstkrans is our special Christmas ring,” Marja, the owner of Oost-erwyk’s Dutch Bakery explained. “It is a puff pastry wreath with almond paste filling complimented by our Almond Stick, almond bark shaped as a long round stick.” Fresh Lefse, bread, cupcakes and cookies will join these desserts on their shelves as the holidays creep closer; stop in early for the largest selection.

No time to bake holiday goodies? No problem!

Simply CaketasticAs Simply Caketastic

nears the two-year anni-versary of their opening, owner Jessica Graves is amazed at the business that flows through. Simply Caketastic is located on 1357 State Avenue, mak-ing it easily accessible to the people of Marysville.

The cozy bakery has a lot going on during this Christmas season. Every Saturday in December they will be providing opportunities for people to decorate freshly made gingerbread houses. They also have a Christmas tra-dition with a twist: Ugliest Sweater Cookie Contest. Details for both of these events will be posted on their Facebook page and website, www.simplyca-ketastic.com.

Christmas desserts such as peppermint and hot cocoa cupcakes, yule logs and Christmas cookies bring to life their motto; “Desserts With Style.”

Simply Caketastic’s main goal is to provide many affordable options. Care for their customers is evident as they cater to cupcake connoisseurs’ allergy needs, food prefer-ences and overall customer service.

“We want to make life

easier for people, whether they need something quick and small to take to a house party or they need desserts for gifts, we are here for them,” Graves explained with a bright smile.

Smokey Point Bakery

“Smokey Point is a quickly growing area,” Greg Neumiller, the owner of Smokey Point Bakery Cafe said, explaining how the location of his bakery is ideal. The store opened three years ago and rely

on word of mouth to ad-vertise. The business at Smokey Point Bakery Cafe has steadily increased.

“This place is absolutely wonderful,” agreed a fre-quent customer who was picking up an order. “It’s great, fresh and the sand-wiches are to die for!”

“Quality is a big deal to us. We bake classic pastries and we are con-stantly perfecting them.” Neumiller said.

Pies, breads, croissants, scones, cinnamon rolls, bread pudding and break-fast sandwiches are just a smattering of the options offered at the Smokey Point bakery.

Winter is here, and it’s a great time to sit down with a cup of hot cocoa, a good book and a fresh pastry from your local bakery.

n Pick up delicious desserts that will make your holidays merrier from local bakeries, like these hot cocoa-peppermint cupcakes, a specialty of Simply Caketastic of Marysville.

Even Scrooge learns to be generous during the holi-days, and for many of us, the season of joy is also a season of giving . There are many needs throughout our com-munities and each of us may choose a different cause .

While supporting the food bank or the Salvation Army may seem like a no-brainer, other community organizations also depend on contributions from gen-erous donors . Here are just a few ideas for giving .

Trees for SalmonThe holiday season is

upon us, and the Adopt A Stream Foundation has a special offer to make the season merry for fish and wildlife too .

The local conservation or-ganization will sell 200 “Live and Wild” Holiday Trees for Salmon . The trees cost $35 and will be available at the Northwest Stream Center

A time of giving… here are a few ways to help Sunday, December 15, be-tween 10 a .m . and 2 p .m . The Northwest Stream Center is located in Snohomish Coun-ty’s McCollum Park, 600 128th Street SE, Everett .

“There will be a great se-lection of 3 to 5 foot Sitka Spruce, Western Red Cedar, Shore Pine, Douglas Fir, and Grand Fir trees that are in pots,” explained Adopt A Stream Foundation direc-tor Tom Murdoch . “After the holidays, all trees that are returned to the North-west Stream Center will be planted next to local streams, helping out next year’s salmon runs .”

Murdoch added that all Holiday Trees for Salmon from last year are now grow-ing next to streams provid-ing shade that keeps water temperatures cool just the way salmon and trout like it . Everyone who purchases a Holiday Tree for Salmon

this year will receive a holi-day gift of an annual Adopt A Stream Foundation mem-bership ($25 value), which provides discounts on 2014 Streamkeeper Academy events and purchases at the Northwest Stream Center Nature Store, along with the good feeling that comes with knowing their Holiday Tree for Salmon will be doing

great things for the North-west environment long into the future .

For more information call 425-316-8592 or go to www .streamkeeper .org .

Help throw a partyThe staff of the Marysville

Sea Mar Community Health Center will host a Christmas party serving many low-

income patients and their families at Cedarcrest Mid-dle School on December 17 . The families who have at-tended the event in the past are some of the neediest in our community .

Sea Mar Marysville pro-vides a meal and gifts for each child under 13 years old . Each year they serve an average of 100 families who would not otherwise have a merry Christmas .

The health center is asking others in the community to participate with a contribu-tion of money or food . All money collected goes toward the purchase of food for a holiday banquet, and contri-butions are tax deductible . Every donation, big or small, helps make the event a success .

Contact Anayelle Lopez at 360-657-3089 or Laura Moreno, 360-657-3064 for more information about

how you can help .

Buy a coffeeThe Caribinieri Bar in

downtown Marysville is more than a coffee stand, although you can get a great cup of coffee and homemade scone at the Third Street drive-through .

But its purpose is big-ger than serving coffee: it’s all about serving the community .

The espresso stand was purchased last year by Allen Creek Community Church, and proceeds from its sales support the church’s Seeds of Grace food bank and a co-op garden, among other programs .

The baristas are friendly and professionally-trained, and they serve high quality Caffe D’Arte coffee . Their bakery items are also favor-ites among their customers .

So enjoy a latté and help support local good deeds .

We’re thankful for you!
