If you have had a baby in the last 12 months, the NCT would like to hear from you. The charity

is interested in your views about

the care you received from health professionals after your baby was born. Did you get the help you needed? Were the staff kind and understanding? We will use your feedback to publicise good practice and any problems that families experience, as well as using it for lobbying at a political level.

Weve included a survey with your copy of Newgen or go online and have your say at nct.org.uk/pnsurvey.

    Tell us about it!

NCT president Gail Werkmeister spoke to delegates on the subject of parental support services in the UK at the Australian College of Midwives 16th National Conference in Adelaide this September.

Gails address, Achieving change with parents, for parents the UK experience looked at achieving change within maternity services for parents, starting from a parents point of view.

Gail wanted to use the Australian Conference as an opportunity to explain how and why the NCT believes maternity and early parenting support services should be designed around parents needs. She also wanted to outline how Australian maternity services can look to UK practices and employ similar learning.

    The NCT go dowN-uNder!

A study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggests that there may be an association between drugs used during the third stage of labour and a reduction in breastfeeding 48 hours after birth.

This study suggests that injected synthetic oxytoxin alone or with ergometrine (e.g. Syntometrine), which is given to speed the delivery of the placenta and prevent haemorrhage after the birth, could also make breastfeeding more difficult. It is already known that pethidine and similar opioid drugs can have an impact on babies ability to start breastfeeding in the early days.

Rosie Dodds, Senior Public Policy Officer said of the research. The NCT welcomes the study, which is unusual in addressing the important question of how the

management of labour and birth may influence mothers and babies breastfeeding experiences, and also supports the need for further studies in this area.

Women need more support to start breastfeeding soon after giving birth and this study adds weight to that.

Many women are not provided with enough information about the medications that might be given to them during childbirth and women at low risk of bleeding may not need to take these drugs. It is important that women understand the risks and can give their informed consent before they go into labour.

For more information on oxytocin, third stage labour or drugs that may be offered to women during labour, please visit the NCT info centre at nct.org.uk/info-centre.

The NCT is celebrating a year of successful partnership with MIDIRS, the educational charity for midwives. NCT students are now automatically enrolled as members of MIDIRS, providing access to a wider range of resources, while NCT provides MIDIRS members with Perspective, a quarterly magazine showcasing the best in parent-centred care and best practice stories from the charity.

MIDIRS and the NCT have often worked together on various projects in the past and share common goals, especially in relation to the provision of and access to information about issues and services for pregnancy, childbirth, parenting and childcare.

This has now been formalised into a more comprehensive arrangement that offers greater opportunities to subscribers to MIDIRS and NCT specialist workers and students to make use of the resources of both organisations. There are also future plans for the two organisations to work together on products for consumers as well as resources for education and training.

Cynthia Clarkson was shortlisted as Volunteer of the Year in the Third Sector Excellence Awards, 2009.

Based in Edinburgh, Cynthia joined the NCT in 1968 and has volunteered with the NCT for more than 40 years. She was an NCT antenatal teacher for 30 years, an NCT trustee and co-chair of the NCTs Maternity Services Representatives and Research Networkers Panels. She is now a member of the Research Advisory Group and Campaigns and Policy Advisory Group for Scotland.

Cynthia is currently the NCTs representative on the Scottish Breastfeeding Group and continues to volunteer as an NCT breastfeeding counsellor. She also represents parents in the on-going steering and evaluation groups of Keeping Childbirth Natural and Dynamic programme; a way of treating pregnancy and childbirth as normal life events that centres on midwife-led care for healthy women.

Cynthia said: I am delighted to have been shortlisted Ive learnt so much through my work with the NCT and its been fantastic to see how our efforts can make a difference

This summer we joined forces with photo experts Snapfish an online

digital photo printing and sharing site in search of the photograph that best depicts the theme of My Family.

The competition ran between June and September this year and we can now finally reveal the winning pictures.

We had an overwhelming response from all over the country and, as the brief was left open to artistic interpretation, we received a varied collection of wonderful images.

We were extremely impressed with just how creative you all were. We had a very hard job picking a winner but we finally plumped for Hannah Koopman of the North of England in first place with her artistically taken shot of her baby girl enjoying her first ever Easter celebration (pictured). Second prize went to Elizabeth Todd of Ireland who captured a jubilant, happy moment in a very special picture of her and the family on her wedding day. And we felt a picture of Lexy Scott and her brother, walking arm in arm, was more than worthy of the third place gong!

The NCT will be hosting its first ever awards ceremony for maternity and family support services in Northern Ireland on 3 December 2009.

Set up by the NCTs Campaigns and Policy Advisory Group for Northern Ireland, the awards were open for self-nomination to any service providing maternity or family support services to parents of children under two operating anywhere in Northern Ireland.

Anne Fox, Head of Campaigns and Public Policy at the NCT and chair of the panel said: We were really impressed by innovative services working to make a difference to prospective and new parents in Northern Ireland. It was hard to pick the winners but we feel these awards will prove to be a great showcase for what mums and dads want from their public services. Knowing whats out there helps NCT to call for greater investment in the right types of services for families in Northern Ireland where there is no central maternity strategy and often a lack of strategic direction for the development of supportive services for new parents.

The areas covered include: Services promoting the

normality of birth Birth environments designed

around womens needs Innovation in improving

breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates (including reaching communities where breastfeeding rates have been low)

    Normalising breastfeeding in the community

Good practice in providing support for expectant and new mothers experiencing mental health distress

Good practice in supporting parents in the early months

User involvement in service development, design and evaluation

The judges, including NCT volunteers and staff and representatives of the RCM and RCOG met in Belfast on 20 October and selected winners in all categories from the nominations. The awards will be presented by the Northern Ireland Heath Minister Michael McGimpsey at the Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast.

Keep an eye out for the winners in your next issue of Newgen.

    NCT Campaigns

Your birth, your choice?DiD you DeciDe Where to have your baby? Were you given enough information? throughout the uK, Women are being DenieD the choice of Where to give birth. the nct has just launcheD a campaign to ensure that choice is DelivereD, anD Women can have the best possible experiences.

The Government has promised that, by the end of the year, all women in England will have the choice of where they give birth. Is this promise being lived up to? In short, no.

We commissioned research and found that less than five per cent of women have the full range of choice available to them. This is not acceptable. Women should have the choice of giving birth in their home, supported by midwife care, in a birth centre or in a hospital. England is the only country to have any guarantee, but we are campaigning to make sure that all four of the UKs countries make, and live up to, a guarantee.

Choice is really important, as it makes available the options of birth centres and home births, which help women to be more mobile during labour, need less pain relief and be more satisfied with the experience, among other benefits.

Jo, who gave birth to her first child in an obstetric unit in a hospital, believes that being given a choice in her labour would have improved her experience. Her hospital labour was very long, and ended in an assisted delivery. The information she received

about her birth and options all came from NCT antenatal classes. She says: My first birth experience was very negative I had little information or support from the midwifery team. I was left grieving for the birth I didnt have. Being given the choice of where to give birth is critical for women.

What are we doing? Were campaigning for women to be given all the information and support they need to make the choice about where they want to give birth. One of the main elements of the campaign is making sure women are supported with home births. This is because low home birth rates are the biggest factor in restricting choice.

We also encourage the development of more birth centres and better use of staff, to ensure women have the support they need.

you deserve the birth you want, in the place you want

What can you Do?We need your support to succeed with this campaign. Join NCT Active and receive an email once a month with very quick, simple actions you can take in order to encourage change. You can do as much or as little as you like and access peer-to-peer support for how to make change. You can sign up at nct.org.uk/active.

Handled with care I am the mother of 31-month-old

triplets, born in Princess Anne hospital in Southampton.

We found the staff at the neonatal unit endlessly patient and sympathetic. We were given plenty of skin to skin contact with our children and I was able to visit them whenever I wanted while I was staying in the hospital.

The staff encouraged us to do as much for the children as we felt able to do and were very supportive of my strong wish to breastfeed our babies. After one week Thomas and Grace were transferred to the Royal Surrey in Guildford, with Henry following them three days later, where they remained for a further four and a half weeks. I cannot praise the SCBU staff at the Royal Surrey enough. They were so caring and supportive. When the children stopped using their feeding tubes, the nurses showed me the best way to breastfeed and were full of encouragement, ultimately enabling me to continue to breastfeed the children without formula supplement until they were three months old and with supplements until they were a year old.

Being born in February, Thomas, Grace and Henry were still in SCBU for Mothers Day. The nurses went to all the trouble of making cards for all the SCBU mothers with wonderful photographs of their babies attached and a wrapped present from each baby to their mother. I was lucky enough to receive a card and present from each of my children. I cant tell you how much that gesture meant, particularly as I was at an all time low at that point because of the infection I had suffered. I will treasure those

cards and bags for the rest of my life. When our babies were ready to come

home, my husband and I spent two days and nights rooming in SCBU so that we and the nurses could be certain that wed cope. Again the nurses, many of whom had now become real friends, were incredibly supportive. When the whole family left SCBU we were urged by the nurses to bring the children to see them whenever we were visiting the hospital with them. We have done this and always received a warm welcome; the nurses being obviously thrilled to see the children again.

I can only sing the praises of the staff in Southampton and in Guildford for the care they gave our children and us. Were lucky parents of three perfectly healthy and very boisterous children and this is due in no small part to those nurses and doctors.ann MillerInformation materials for parents of premature babies can be accessed at nct.org.uk/info-centre

Better bottlesI was really pleased to read in the autumn edition of newgen that the NCT has been campaigning

to reduce the use of the chemical Bisphenol-A from infant bottles.

Clearly the charitys involvement has been influential in persuading Philips AVENT to add a BPA-free bottle to their range.

Its great to see that the NCT is not only campaigning on the issues of breastfeeding and homebirths but also about a wider range of issues which affect parents who choose to bottle feed. This inclusive approach by the NCT is to be congratulated and demonstrates how the NCT campaigns on behalf of all parents and the health of all children, regardless of brith experience or feeding choice.Pip westmacott

    Membership

We recently recruited our 100,000th member. So its time to celebrate! Mark Atkinson, NCT Voluntary Income

Director, shares everyones delight at this news: Were thrilled to have reached the 100,000 member milestone. Its fantastic recognition from parents themselves that 100,000 of them have chosen to support our work through membership.

As the UKs leading parenting charity, we reach more than a million parents each year through our website, helplines, classes and outreach work. Our evidence-based information is developed through detailed research, including collaborative work in

partnership with health bodies, leading UK research organisations and governments.

Long establishedWeve been supporting parents through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood for more than 50 years. Membership has grown from a small group of women, to several thousand in the 70s and 80s.

Since the very first member joined the NCT, our campaigning work has seen great changes being made to UK maternity services. Major successes include: fathers being present at the birth of their baby and their increasing involvement within birth choices plus women having increased access to one-to-

one midwifery care and a say in how their maternity services are run.

Still relevant We continue to be a voice for change. Our current campaigns include allowing women and their families to be able to choose the environment in which they give birth and ensuring parents returning to work receive adequate support.

From the time a woman finds out shes pregnant, she and her partner have to make decisions about the pregnancy, the birth and the sort of parents they want to be. But most people dont have information thats easily understood or available to help them make an informed decision.

As the NCT celebrates signing up its 100,000th member, we take a look at why the charity is just as important now as it when was founded back in 1957

    A groWing concern

Keep pushingAlthough there have been improvements in policy on maternity care and breastfeeding, maternity services generally are not yet in a fit state to enable every woman to have a positive, empowering birth.

All parents struggle with the transition to parenthood. There are additional challenges for parents who have specific social and medical needs or are from disadvantaged backgrounds. For example, parents from ethnic minorities, families on low income, families with disabilities, young parents and lone parents are known to have difficulties accessing the services and support they need.

We are working toward a future society that supports people making the transition to parenthood; helping make the key decisions about birth and parenting, enabling them to decide on the sort of parent they want to be.

Your help, your voiceThe NCT is run by parents for parents and its your support that makes it all happen. As a member, your donation means that we can continue to give parents a voice in the UK. Your support funds our work with national governments, fighting for change in maternity care, postnatal provision and recognition of the needs of mums and dads. It also allows us to run support groups and helplines across the UK, providing a lifeline for parents who often have nowhere else to turn for information and understanding. Thank you!

Our 100,000th member is first time mum-to-be Helen Warner, a 34-year-old exercise teacher from Bromsgrove. She says:

Its brilliant to be the NCTs 100,000th member. I joined the NCT a few weeks ago as my husband and I are planning on attending an antenatal course later in the year and I would like to get to know other parents-to-be in our area through the local NCT activities. Its great that NCT is able to provide so much information to help parents during their pregnancy and with their new babies. One of the things I really like about being a member is knowing that my membership fee will go towards subsidising NCT classes for those who cannot afford to pay for them.

The ncT was instrumental in helping me overcome postnatal depression. Being involved with my local branch helped me improve my self esteem and confidence. Cathy, Darlington

i couldnt have made it through my first pregnancy without the ncT. They helped me when no one else was available and i am so grateful to them. They gave me access to information that i didnt even know was out there. 32 year old new mum

    Co-sleeping

Nuzzling up to your sleeping baby can be one of the most precious, gratifying experiences of parenthood. Co-sleeping with your child

also provides another opportunity to bond, but is it safe? Or do the benefits outweigh the (perceived) risks?

In a recent article on bed-sharing in NCTs New Digest, Helen Ball, Professor of Anthropology at Durham University, acknowledges that there is a range of conflicting information and advice available, from the benefits in bonding and establishing breastfeeding to concerns over preventing accidental death or SIDS [Sudden Infant Death Syndrome]: Advocates on both sides of the discussion have the interests of parents and babies at heart, but the messages are sometimes contradictory, causing confusion and anxiety for parents, health professionals, and parenting support organisations who sometimes feel caught in the cross-fire.

The NCT has called for more information to be available to parents so that they can make an informed decision. Around half of all UK mothers sleep in bed with their baby at least some of the time in the first six months so it is important for parents to know how to share their bed as safely as possible, and to know about the

circumstances when bed-sharing has been shown to involve increased risks.

Western waysHelen believes that the relatively recent Western culture of infant independence has contributed to a suspicion of co-sleeping. Having a baby who sleeps through the night and in a separate room is seen as effective parenting, although it is historically recent and would be viewed very differently in other cultures. However, research shows that the impact of early physical contact between parent and baby is important, causing growing numbers of professionals to question these Western attitudes.

Helen says [There is a] renewed recognition of the importance of contact and touch for babies in the context of improving breastfeeding initiation and duration; an increased awareness of the role that close parental proximity and monitoring of babies plays in reducing SIDS and neglect, and the impact of early mother-infant separation on long-term mental health.

Why bed-share?So, why do a significant number of parents decide to share their bed with their baby? Helen and her colleagues have carried out several studies which show that most

    Nightvision

Is sharing a bed with your baby really so bad? We take a look at current evidence on the practice of co-sleeping

  • Winter 2009 Newgen Magazine 15

During the early months, parents often use feeding as a way to settle their baby to sleep, including during the night when the baby wakes up. Young babies need frequent feeds day and night. As they get older they can last longer between feeds.

There are gentle ways of encouraging your baby to sleep and to settle back to sleep if they wake briefly between phases of night sleep, without being fed or held. However, some babies are more relaxed, so respond more readily, some are more sensitive and find it more difficult to settle.

Breastfeeding at night when youre still sleepy, such as when sharing the same bed or with the baby very close by so she can be scooped up easily, is one way mother and

baby can return to sleep with minimal disruption. Breastfeeding hormones help women return to sleep more quickly.

However, babies who are regularly fed until they drop off can associate being fed with the onset of sleep and many then find it difficult to settle without being fed. Some parents enjoy sharing their bed for the first year or two, and are happy with co-sleeping and feeding their baby to sleep. Others seek a gentle alternative where baby sleeps close but separately for most of the night and learns to go off to sleep without feeding.

If you want to encourage your baby to go to sleep without feeding her, or without being present, you could try one or more of the following approaches.

Placing your baby awake in her cot with a favourite toy or comfort blanket has been shown in studies to increase the proportion of babies who go to sleep without a parent being present and the length of time babies sleep.

As babies become more aware, introducing a regular bedtime routine such as a bath, bedtime clothes, singing or reading a book together, are also found to assist settling and sleep.

In young babies, some people find that additional feeds during the evening, or semi-waking the baby for a feed between 10pm and midnight, can help babies sleep for longer stretches at night.

    Co-sleeping

prospective parents dont anticipate sleeping with their newborn baby, but by three months after birth, the majority of parents had done so. This is particularly the case for breastfeeding mothers who are often unprepared for the frequency of feeds or how long night-time breastfeeding is likely to continue. Her research shows that breastfed babies are generally still feeding as frequently throughout the night at three months as they were at one month. As a result For those committed to breastfeeding, sleeping with their babies becomes one of the means by which mothers cope with frequent night-time feeding.

To examine how mother-baby sleep contact may help breastfeeding mothers, the research team conducted a randomised controlled trial. They found that babies who slept in their mothers bed or a three-sided crib attached securely to the mothers bed while in hospital breastfed more frequently than those placed to sleep in a separate cot. The cot was a barrier between mother and baby that prevented contact, inhibited the babys ability to root and initiate suckling, obscured the babys cues from the mother, and prevented mothers from retrieving their babies without either assistance or the need to get out of bed. When they were 16 weeks old, 43 per cent of babies in a separate cot on the postnatal ward were breastfed compared with 73 per cent of the crib group and 79 per cent of the bed group.

The Department of Health advises that bed-sharing (or co-sleeping) should be avoided if one or both parents: is a smoker has consumed alcohol has taken mind-altering drugs or

drowsiness-inducing medication has a condition that can cause

an altered consciousness e.g. diabetes or unstable epilepsy

is very obese is excessively tiredOr if either parent, or the baby, has a

fever or has any signs of illnessWherever they are sleeping, babies should sleep on their backs, and shouldnt get too hot, so keep their heads uncovered.

The way mothers co-sleep with their children can facilitate breastfeeding

Helen says that prompt response to babies feeding signals and frequent suckling in the early days are essential elements in ensuring successful milk production a process controlled by the hormone prolactin. The mother produces more prolactin each time her baby feeds, so frequent attempts are key. These are facilitated by close proximity. This is especially important at night since breastfeeding at night triggers greater prolactin release than daytime feeding.

Instincts in actionHelen has observed that the way mothers co-sleep with their children can also facilitate breastfeeding and help to avoid presumed hazards of sleeping in adult beds. Breastfeeding mothers and babies have been observed displaying consistent bed-sharing behaviour. Mothers sleep facing their baby, and curled up around them. Babies are level with their mothers breasts, in the space created between the mothers arm (positioned above her babys head) and her knees (drawn up under her babys feet). This appears to be an instinctive behaviour by breastfeeding mothers to create a space for their baby to sleep.

Mothers who have previously breastfed tend to sleep in the same position characteristic of breastfeeders, but mothers who have never breastfed and fathers do not always sleep in this fashion. In families filmed sleeping at home, formula-fed babies were generally high in the bed, on top of or between the parents pillows. Formula-feeding mothers spent less time facing their baby and they did not adopt the protective sleep position as often. Helen says, For the time being some authorities

suggest that non-breastfeeders keep their baby in a cot by the bed for sleep.

Concerns have been raised that parent baby bed-sharing is a questionable practice regarding risk of SIDS and/or accidental death. Helen explains that babies sleeping on their front, parental smoking, poverty, and young maternal age are all well-known factors that are associated with an increased risk of unexpected infant death. Helen also notes that estimates of the risk of SIDS when bed-sharing vary widely: Assessments of the impact of bed-sharing on SIDS-risk in the UK range from no increased risk to babies of non-smoking parents to a 12-fold increase for infants sharing a sofa for sleep with a parent who smokes.

There is as yet no definitive one size fits all advice for parents but, as Helen points out, all parents should be provided with clear information about both the factors known to increase the risk of SIDS when bed-sharing (see box) and the aspects of adult beds that should be modified with baby safety in mind: such as gaps between bed and wall or other furniture, how near the baby is to pillows, and the type of bedding used. NCT is challenging misinterpretation of research studies and helping to get accurate messages put across in the media.

    Chapeltown

For even the most privileged of parents, the feeling of excitement and joy a new baby brings is normally accompanied by fear and apprehension. So

the prospect of having a baby when you have virtually no money, a precarious housing status and are living in a foreign country must be extremely frightening. This is exactly the predicament that asylum seekers and refugees in the UK find themselves in daily.

There are more than 3,000 asylum seekers living in Leeds, with no access to housing and benefits plus no rights to work. NCT antenatal teacher Rose McCarthy, along with her colleagues at Chapeltown and Shepherds Lane Children Centre in Leeds, is working to improve pregnancy and birthing experience for local refugees and asylum seekers. Her work illustrates the NCTs commitment to providing access to a positive birth and parenting advice for all.

Empowering womenFor the last five years part of Roses role has been to work with the Centre by leading local classes that are mainly attended by asylum seekers. Many of these women have very little and live on 35 worth of vouchers a week. Their needs are very basic, requiring bare necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. Along with Seven-Day Response midwife, Val Windor (also a qualified NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor) Rose runs classes on active birth and workshops that aim to empower the women to give birth their way.

The Chapeltown Centre in Leeds provides care and support to vulnerable women. We take a closer look at the project and the wider issues involved

    Reaching all paRents

  • Winter 2009 Newgen Magazine 19

Many of the women have wonderful ideas of coping strategies for birth that theyve learnt from their own culture. They love to share these with each other and we encourage them to not feel they have to adapt to British traditions, says Rose.

The Centre also provides doula support plus a crche and postnatal group. Theres also a clothing exchange and access to interpreters to help the women at the birth.

Support group Rose wants to provide an environment where the women can feel safe and have the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences. Rose also wants the women to feel like theyre part of a community. One of the first things we do in the antenatal session is get the women to discuss how they feel about giving birth. Through this, they realise that despite having different cultural and racial backgrounds, theyre very similar.

The session is wholly group-led, she continues. And we may end up going in another direction altogether. One week I asked people to name something they do to help them relax. I thought this would lead into a discussion on coping strategies for labour. The conversation about spirituality that followed wasnt at all what I had in mind when asking how they relaxed! Being able to be flexible is essential and due to my NCT training and 17 years experience of teaching, I feel able to be so.

In fact, Rose cites her NCT training as an enormous help with her work at the Centre.

    Reaching all paRents

Dorcus is waiting to find out if she will be deported to Botswana. She is HIV Positive and if she is deported she has no money to pay for the medication she needs; so effectively shell go back to die. She was directed to the Centre by a health-worker while pregnant with her two-year-old daughter, Toltol.

When I was released from the detention centre I was put on a train to Leeds I didnt know the place but that was where I was told to go. When I arrived I had no idea where I was or who to talk to. I had no money and I was hungry my pregnancy didnt help.

My first night was spent sleeping in the railway station. The following day somebody directed me to the Refugee Council who was able to find me somewhere to stay and tell me where I could get some vouchers. It was another day before I would eat.

By the time I got vouchers for food, I didnt know what to do. The person who gave me the vouchers wasnt meant to

take me to the shop but I didnt know where it was, so they took me to the supermarket where I had to rush and get some food before they were discovered. After two days of not eating and with severe pain in my pelvis it was too much and I couldnt walk very far. I was sad and lonely. And I was so very hungry.

After being sent here and there it was nice when I arrived at the Childrens Centre. Rose made me feel very welcome. I could relax and talk about my pregnancy and for the first time I felt that someone understood what I was going through. Plus I could make some friends there too.

Because Im awaiting my status, I dont receive any benefits so Im entirely dependent on vouchers. This is difficult, especially now Toltol is two as she needs a lot of things. I have often gone without food myself so that Toltol can have a small treat. Rose has been so good to me. She provides me with lots of advice and help.

    hOw chapeltOwn helped me

My NCT training was people-focused and taught me to listen, she says.By listening you help build a mothers confidence and you allow them to share techniques and offer advice to others. This has produced positive outcomes; some of the women have become voluntary bosum buddies

giving them a sense of empowerment and passing on their skills to other women.

The sessions with the women are not just centred on birth and breastfeeding. Many of the women are isolated in other aspects of their lives so the sessions provide much needed social contact, as Rose explains:

  • Newgen Magazine Winter 200920

    Chapeltown

We have one girl who first came here when she was 17. When she arrived in the class she hadnt had a conversation for weeks. In fact, for ages her session once a week was the only significant human contact she had.

Rose has also gained from the Centre. Ive enjoyed the friendships Ive built and my children benefit too that 17-year-old girl has helped my son with his French!

Branching outRoses links with the NCT have been vital in helping the women who use the Centre. Her local branch has appealed for hospital packs as many asylum seekers have no money to buy basics such as cotton wool, sanitary towels or nappies. The branch has also donated leftovers from its Good as New Sales to Chapeltowns Clothing and Goods Exchange. Rose believes that branches all over the UK could follow suit.

The NCT is committed to helping parents no matter what their status. There is a great need for this help among asylum seekers and refugees they literally have nothing and many have undergone trauma. The UK has lots of centres like Chapeltown with people whod really benefit from NCT-focused care. I cant speak all the languages

and Im not a cultural expert but my NCT background means I can communicate effectively with people .

Before I started in Chapeltown, I didnt know there were asylum seekers in Leeds and that while myself and my fellow NCT members were living in comfort, there were people in the same city who have nothing. The same is happening all around the country. These people are wonderful I didnt know what I was missing!

My NCT training was people-focused and taught me to listen. By listening you help to build a mothers confidence.

spoken in the group. at some sessions there have been six interpreters at once! Women get to know certain interpreters and these interpreters are with the women at the birth, if possible.

Men at the BiRth: the idea of men being at the birth seems a very foreign concept to many who attend the group. some welcome the idea, whilst others laugh at the notion as if it is totally inappropriate which in some cultures it is. We aim to enable the women to choose what is right for them.

siGnpostinG: our crche workers are amazing women, who not only care for children in an adjoining room while their mums attend the session but offer many postnatal sessions in the same building.

BosoM Buddies: they visit mums in hospital and their own homes, attend breastfeeding cafs and help them with any breastfeeding issues.

BuildinG a CoMMunity: life is easier when you have friends. We aim to build a multi-cultural community where people feel safe to share their hopes and fears as well as feeling confident to give birth and to be good parents.

    Fundraising

Lionel Green went above and beyond the call of duty, organising a London to Amsterdam bike ride all in aid of the NCT. His journey

lasted for four days arriving in the Dutch capital on Friday 8 May.

Lionel raised 1,150 for the NCT and acquired some very sun-burnt legs in the process. We asked him what inspired him to take on such a challenge

We attended an NCT antenatal course when my wife Octavia was pregnant with our daughter Alice. We made good friends with our NCT group and found the course very useful, supportive and informative. Without the classes we definitely would have been very ill-prepared.

The NCT has become a large part of Octavias life as she is undergoing training to become an NCT teacher. She has also helped out at several NCT Nearly New Sales from which Alice, now two, has done quite well. Thats why I wanted to do my bit.

Ive always been a big fan of cycling. I have cycled to and from work for the last ten years; often cycling 70 miles a week just going to and from work. I have also done several long distance rides, including a 12-day/500 mile ride in Scotland, and enjoyed

them greatly. Id never done a cycle ride of this type abroad before and thats where the idea came from.

Doing a ride like this is more of a mental than physical challenge. I didnt specifically train for the ride, as I knew I could do it. My general conditioning that I have from cycling 70+ miles a week was enough to be physically fit and I was sure that my previous experiences would help me through.

Cycling through lovely countryside, ocean views and meeting new people is an exhilarating experience. It was challenging too even more so when youre cycling on your own my knowledge of basic cycle mechanics came in handy!

I was elated that Id finished the ride in the time allotted; four days to cover 350

miles/500km is tough in anyones book! I was also very physically and mentally tired

as well as having badly sun-burnt legs! Peoples pledges were

dependent upon me completing the ride

in time, so that was another reason to be pleased as the NCT stood to gain as well!

    Myself and Octavia would love

to do something like this again but the

next one will have to wait for when Alice is a few

years older. Perhaps she will do it with me next time!

Its not easy to do something like this but its very rewarding. Even if you are used to cycling and physically fit, the mental challenge can be quite daunting. More than anything, know how to fix a puncture, to read a map and use a compass. Take sun-block and sunglasses and drink plenty of water (but nothing stronger while cycling) along the way.

Working the sale is hard work but the mums weve spoken to always really enjoy themselves, as Donna from Woking Branch can testify: Theyre so much fun, very sociable, and you get to make some really good friends.

Volunteering for the sales can also bring out hidden, or not so hidden, talents if youre a master baker why not make some cakes to sell, or perhaps you could help to advertise the event? Take the opportunity to unleash your talents by

All profits from NCT Nearly New Sales help us support new mums and dads on their journey towards becoming a parent. In fact theyre the NCTs biggest fundraising event. This season has been fantastic, with lots of branches holding really successful sales and generating lots of money for the charity. Here we focus on two brilliant branches:

Loughborough branch This branch sale really built on their previous successes. This season they recruited 102 sellers, 49 volunteers and welcomed 455 attendees. Guests could buy cakes from their fabulous cake stall and wash them down with teas and coffees. The branch also ran a tombola and were really pleased when they counted up and discovered that they raised over 2,500.

Gravesend Branch This branch doubled their profits from last years sale to raise more than 500. They had 34 sellers who served 283 attendees. Cakes, tea and coffee were sold and the volunteers had great fun and grabbed some bargains for themselves. One bought a travel cot, which another volunteer then used to keep her baby safe while she helped in the caf.

We are aiming this season to help 30,000 families through Nearly New Sales. It looks like we are going to smash this target as over 19,000 parents have attended sales in September.

    September sales have raised over

135,000, enough to support 80,000 mums calling the Breastfeeding Line. We are well on the way to raising the 400,000 that we hoped for.

We estimate that branches have diverted a massive 135 tonnes of waste away from landfill.

working with a team of other volunteers to bring it all together; all kinds of skills and contributions are more than welcome. Laurie, who volunteers for the Brentwood Branch, gets a real kick out of working with her fellow sellers on the sales. They are a great opportunity to get to know some other mums in the area, work on a fun project and have a sense of satisfaction at the end of it. Weve had the same core committee in place now for four sales in a row and were still having a blast.

    Returning to work

Vicky worked at a media company for 12 years. She announced her pregnancy when she reached her second trimester and worked up until six weeks before her daughter was born.

During the last trimester commuting became very difficult so her manager agreed to her working at home. This is the most useful and supportive thing that they could do says Vicky. During the last

trimester, she spoke with her line manager on the phone at least once a week and was in daily contact with her colleagues.

Towards the end of her pregnancy she had several detailed conversations with her line manager about the sorts of roles she could take up on return. Once she had the baby, she kept in touch with her line manager and colleagues during leave via email and visited the office. Although the

arrangement was ad hoc and driven by Vicky, she ended up speaking with her line manager about once a week.

In preparation for returning to work she had another discussion with her line manager where they agreed a re-induction programme to built up her responsibilities. Several months in, she feels that she has made the right decision to return to work.

Making it work A good trAnsition in Action

although the majority of women (60 per cent) return to work after giving birth, only three in ten found their return to work after

maternity leave easy. The NCT aims to rectify this situation by informing and educating employers on pregnancy and parenthood and by letting mothers know how to go about getting back in business.

The NCT is launching two guidebooks designed for employers and employees entitled Mothers Going Back to Work.

The online guides are free evidence-based packs to help managers and new mothers to ensure a smoother return to work.

Many employers want to do the right thing and have good policies but individual line managers dont know how to implement them. The employers guidebook aims to dispel the myths surrounding pregnancy. It focuses on how line managers can overcome their fears when dealing with pregnant employees and gives the business case for making maternity leave work for them.

A separate guide for new mothers provides practical advice on maternity leave and tips for returning to work. Employment rights are also covered, along with a checklist to request flexible working hours.

Written with the help of the charity Working Families, the guide features experiences of women who have recently returned to work following maternity or adoption leave. It also covers how personal values and emotional wellbeing change once back at work.

Both guidebooks are backed by research

How the NCT is informing employers and empowering mothers on the issue of going back to work

    Happy returns

The guides will be launched in December with the support of DHL, RJW solicitors and Vitabiotics. Both guidebooks will be available on the NCT website.

completed by HR Researcher Liz Morris who interviewed both mothers and employers on their experiences relating to pregnancy in the workplace.

Introducing the amazing properties of Hazelwood products. These unisex necklaces and bracelets are made from the bark of the Hazelnut Tree. Originally discovered by the American Indians, these products may have a unique way of absorbing the excess acid produced in our bodies when they are in direct contact with the skin.

Acidity is thought to be a symptom of the pain associated with a babys teething period. By using these 100% natural, safe products, which have a safety clasp which will break under pressure, your babys teething may be eased. They can also help their digestion, constipation, reduce colic, nappy rash & eczema.E-mail: [email protected]
