Why Graduate Students and PostdocsShould Pursue Grants
By Victoria McGovern for Inside Higher Ed The need to succeed atgetting grants is acontinuing part of facultylife at researchinstitutions. Watching theprocess leaves somegraduate students andpostdocs convinced thatthey want no part of it.The stakes seem sohigh. And it's true, thestakes are high. Butbringing in outsidefunding is the only way to sustain an independentresearch-driven career in an academic setting.
If grant writing requires researchers to justify their upkeepand show continuing innovation, then they are hardly alone. It's not very different outside the ivory tower. Demonstratingone's creative prowess and professional mastery is a partof careers ranging from architecture to zymurgy. Rock starssing for their supper, and novelists need more than onestory to tell. Whether your destiny is in the professoriate orbeyond, if you become comfortable with writing down whatyou do, how it matters and why others should give youmoney to do more of it, you will strengthen your capacity tosucceed at many potential careers. country fordissertationresearch - oftenlost.
Back then, I was aNew Yorker livingin Texas, and Ididn't have muchdriving experience. To find my way to different archives, I relied on a usedGPS that would cut off in the middle of a long drive, announcing somewhere on I-10 that it was "recalculating."Similarly, when I first began revising, I knew where I wasstarting (the dissertation) and where I needed to end up(the book), but the map to help me get there kept goingblank.
Early on I assumed that most writers had a moment -walking to the store, going for a run, or driving to campus -when they finally, triumphantly figured out what their bookwas supposed to be about. So in my first phase ofrevising, I waited for an epiphany. In the second, longerphase, I turned off that metaphorical GPS, and devisedmy own plan to edit my way to an argument.

I could have beenprojecting, but I'm pretty sure they were signalingskepticism that they would ever see me again. Surely Ionly added to their doubts when, after moving to the otherside of the country, I proceeded to produce an entirelyextracurricular baby. Never one to pass up a dare - nomatter how imagined - I showed up to defend mydissertation a few years later, triumphantly pushing astroller.
I had correctly guessed that my own happiness(translation: location, location, location) would be the crucialdeterminant in my Ph.D. completion. Yet while it can bedone, writing a dissertation long distance presents uniquechallenges.

Helping Students in Distress: Tips forFaculty and TAs
As a teacher, students view you asa source ofinstruction, assistance, andsometimes personalsupport. In yourconversations with students, some will naturally share theirsuccesses and academic pressures, and a few willdisclose their own personal stories. Other students won'tintentionally share their problems with you, but you maynotice indirectly expressed signs of personal problems.Even if you are uncomfortable with this role, you become apotential resource in times of trouble.
