NOVEMBER 2017

For members and attendees of St. Michael’s United Methodist Church, the month of November is centered around stewardship toward the Lord’s ministries in 2018. We began Stewardship Month on October 22nd and it will end November 12th. The weeks of November 19th and 26th are designated for parishioners to submit financial or service pledge(s) toward the Lord’s ministries in 2018. When a person joins the United Methodist Church, he/she makes a pledges to be loyal to the church by offering prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness toward the church which he/she is joining. Stewardship month should be a reminider to all of us that we have already made a pledge toward the Lord and that we need to be held accountable toward that sacred covenant. The final week of the stewardship campaign is Sunday,

November 12th, and the theme of the week and the worship service is Don’t Worry ‘Bout a Thing

(taken from Jacob

Armstrong’s book Treasure). Of course, upon reciting those words, one cannot help but think about Stevie Wonder’s 1973 classic feel good record. This same tune has been re-recorded by Incognito (1992), John Legend (2005), and most recently by Tori Kelly (2016) through the eyes of Meena, a singing elephant in the wonderful movie, Sing. Worry is a human being’s attempt to control something. You and I worry for two reasons: 1) We want to have more control over an issue than we currently have; 2) We have no control over something and we want to have the ability to steer it in our direction. Worry creates doubt, fear, and anxiety, and it often culminates in suspicious behaviors toward others involved in various situations. In my opinion, worry is bad for the Church of Jesus Christ because it takes away our ability to trust each other and the Lord in very difficult situations. Once we are being led by fear and doubt we become territorial over Christ’s holy church. This is my church, my territory and you did not ask me first!

In the 6th chapter of Matthew,

Jesus tells us not to worry about various items of daily living (Matthew 6:25-34). But instead,we are told to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be givenunto you (Matthew 6:33). Jesus also says that freely we have received, freely give (Matthew 10:8b). So, in the church it is our duty and responsibility to give on good faith and to create ministries on good faith. When we truly open ourselves up to God and believe that God will take care of matters regardless, we should have no worries and no doubts about ourselves and our loved ones. I believe that a lack of faith and accountability have been the major reasons why the Christian Church Universal is in decline. Faith means looking to Jesus for our every need. Instead, we often see a church which is playing it safe with its resources, concerned about the future and its ministries, and being fearful of moving forward. Instead of being fearful, we should be investing ourselves fully in the Lord’s ministries. Through our prayers, presence, gifts and service, we should desire to

become more involved in church matters. Teach or participate in a class, become involved in outreach, invitation and hospitality. Try to give more than you gave last year to the church. If you cannot give 1/10th of your income, make steps to move closer to 1/10tth . Whenever we invest ourselves fully in the Lord, doubt subsides and the energy and enthusiasm moves upward. I look forward to seeing how we will invest ourselves in the Lord’s ministries here at St. Michael’s United Methodist Church in 2018. Yes, it’s Christmas Bazaar time, St. Michael’s Craft Group and other talented people here abouts have been working hard all year making beautiful gifts for you to buy for that special someone on your Christmas list (or any other gift you may need to give): jewelry, baby things, and lots, lots of decorations to beautify your homes this year during the Christmas season. The Craft Group also will be selling one pound packages of fresh lnuts – pecans, almonds, English walnuts, cashews, mixed nuts and trail mix. Come and get all your shopping done in one place and have LOTS OF FUN getttin it all done early too!! Donations for the bake sale will GLADLY BE ACCEPTED. Any and all donations of pies, rolls, coffee cakes, cookies or whatever happens to be your baked goodie specialty. Koinonia (Pot-luck dinners) have resumed. We meet every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite entrée and take a little bit from everyone else. Feel free to stick around for Nany Stoway’s class at 6:30 p.m. in the Library.

  Sunday, Sept. 17, was the debut of our 2017/2018 Chancel Choir as well as the Children/Youth Music. The congregation appeared to enjoy both performances. The Chancel Choir will be singing every Sunday at the 9:00 am service through spring. There will also be occasional solos and other special music during the year. We are also hoping to provide music for the 10:30 service as much as possible. The Children/Youth Music will be singing every third Sunday at both services starting in November. We sincerely hope that everyone appreciates the individual musical efforts that go in to making wonderful music to provide for the Worship Services!    Hopefully, as the winter visitors return for the season, both groups will add more members (and voices) for an even fuller sound. Please consider joining us at the 6:30p rehearsals on Wednesdays for the Chancel Choir, and the Children/Youth Music practices at 11:45 am on Sunday mornings. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us!

Grief Group Sessions:

We have a Grief Group session on which meets every other Wednesday in the Pastor’s Study. You will find below a schedule for these grief group sessions. All sessions are at 10 a.m. in the Pastor’s Study:

As we welcome cooler weather and the return of our winter visitors our church is going through a financial shortfall.  There are things that have to be done to make it safe

for our congregation to worship at our church.

Just a few things are:  The stained glass windows along the top of the Sanctuary are ready to fall out.  Finish installing A/C return vents in Sanctuary.  The Eva Mason Park "playground" does not meet ADA regulations.  We are having a problem paying for the maintenance contract for our air conditioners..

So I am coming to you, our congregation, asking you to please give your church a little extra help.

Handymen/women Group

We’ve got a lot of miscellaneous jobs around the campus that needs our attention. We are asking for your help the first (1) and third (3) Wednesday of each month. Fixing what needs to be fixed, painted, moved, or just cleaned up.

This is not work, look at it this way, you’re exercising at the LORD’S house.

November 1st and 15th 9am to Noon

Here are some Exercising Projects:

Repair Sprinkle system around Fellowship Hall.

Repair kitchen faucet front office.

Install A/C return vents in Sanctuary.

Remove broken playground equipment.

Clean cabinets in kitchen

Pull weeds

You get the idea; we hope you can find time, 6 to 8 hours a month to help out. Coffee and donuts at 8:30a

Over the summer some changes have been made to policies of the church. This is a friendly reminder that we now have Safe Sanctuaries in place. NO child under 18 is to be alone on our campus. Take your children, grandchildren or other child you are responsible for to church with you, the nursery or Sunday school. You or a designated adult must pick them up. We have 30 people that took the class and had a background check so they can work with children on our campus. Classes will be offered as requested.

Due to health and safety issues NO animals will be allowed on our campus unless they are certified service animals.

Outreach is busy making plans for several new projects. Please check the outreach report for opportunities to serve God and your fellow man while having fun.

100 HYGIENE BAGS!!!

We hope to get together 100 hygiene bags for senior adults in the Lake Havasu area by December, 2017. Liz Diego is the contact person for this vital outreach ministry.

We are currently collecting soap for financially challenged families in the Lake Havasu community. Feel free to drop off your soap

every Sunday at the kneeling rail, which surrounds the chancel area.

Feeding the Hungry:

Every last Sunday of the month, please feel free to pick up a brown paper bag when you leave this service. On the outside of the bag are a list non-perishable food items. Please bring these items to worship service on Communion Sunday (1st Sunday of the month). We will be sending these food items to St. Vincent De Paul for underprivileged people in our community.

Dog Park Ministry: Mark your calendars!!! Once again this year, we will be having our Dog Park Ministry at various dog parks in the Lake Havasu City area. Our first outing will be on Saturday, November 11th. We will meet at the church at 8:30 a.m. and head out to various dog parks where we will hand out dog treats to people within the Havasu community. Feel free to bring your furry little friends to this outing.
