Editor’s Note:Tru. Is now five… count ‘em FIVE issues in. And WOW…, it’s been an amazing ride so far!We, (my husband and I) as an original team of two, entered into the magazine world just a few short months ago, in January of 2012 not by intent and totally by accident. That’s a whole ‘nother story for a different day. And we had literally NO idea the work and the enormous amount of talent that it takes to produce; not just a magazine publication, but something special. Talk about a newfound respect for magazine publishers!! No kidding!Tru. Magazine has become and is a “tru” labor a love, from all of our hearts. It was born out of ‘old- fashioned’ commitment, dedication, perseverance, integrity, pride and a love & respect for the arts. Something that WE still hold near and dear to our hearts today, but, has evolved into a synergy of all of that and much more!Tru is all that is entertainment, inspiring and empowering. Tru is an evolutionary enigma in the sense that nothing controls it,

it conforms to nothing and no one component of it, can be complete on its own. We are the fusing of all that is wonderful and positive in this industry that we know and love so much called ENTERTAINMENT. And, just as LOVE is ONE, we are ONE. And through this motto, we have grown to possess the amazing ability as a group to outperform even our best individual member. We don’t compete with each other or anyone else… we just do what WE do.Today, I’m quite proud to say that we’ve grown from a staff of two to twenty-two and we are are still growing stronger with each passing day. Our staff of; reporters, contributing writers, photographers, graphic artists, digital content managers, editors, promoters and assistants live all around the country from the Midwest to Mississippi! Talk about VERSATILITY? Tru. Mag is ALL about that! We are now reaching thousands of viewers with hundreds of thousands and even millions waiting in anticipation of the magazine world’s new breath of fresh air….TRU.We have evolved into a magazine that represents the “masses” instead of certain “classes” of people. I get asked all the time “what’s our demographic”…and I have to laugh…”we have NO demographic…the entire world is our demographic”! Where else can you go to find; up close and personal reviews of Broadway plays, multi-platinum recording artists who emerge back onto the scene and make their comeback right in the pages of our magazine, current celebs as well as legends of the music and film industries, NFL Superstars, Comedians, famous Psychics to the stars, all hangin out under the roof of one magazine?! Plus…all of that “practical” stuff like; recipes that’ll make you wanna slap your momma, real live insight into the problems you deal with each and every day at work, at home and in your love life…are you beginning to get my drift? Now maybe you can see why I can’t/won’t put a “cap” or a “label” on Tru. Magazine. It’s a puzzle- you’ll have to de-cipher it’s value in your world all on your own. But I will say this… if you have any ideas for ways that we can make this product any better I’d love to hear them! We are a magazine of the people, for the people and by the people and much like facebook grew and skyrocketed out of a fusion and culmination of great ideas and great minds… so will Tru Magazine! So feel free to come and join our family, become a part of the Tru. Mag Camp, virtually or otherwise. My belief is that there is no such thing as too many brilliant minds being at work together at the same time. We plan to blow your mind…one issue at a time. How? Because the sky has no limit, and neither do we!1-Love/1-Mission ya’ll, that’s how we do this!

“Kickin it with Keith…the Relationship Doctor”

I ATTRACT THE SAME TYPE OF MAN…WHY? S. O. S. D. D. Translation:

(Same ole shi* different day)

Anitra knew she was very attractive; however she was neither vain nor smug. In fact, she is fairly humble about it. Although fashion conscious, she is more clas-sic in her dress, opting for a more subtle presentation of high end, upscale clothing, taking great care not to flaunt this detail. It is merely her choice over “en vogue”; A qualitative presentation versus quantitative. “Fads” do not justify her shopping decisions, class, classic, and quality does. I call this quiet confidence, an acceptance and belief that “less is more”. Intelligent, educated, suc-cessful in her career, spiritually grounded, politically aware, self-sufficient, popular and engaging, Anitra is a very desirable woman. This is the case five days a week and at church on Sundays. However, on this evening’soccasion, as is usual most every Friday and Saturday, she is wearing an outfit that indeed is trendy and com-mon for a night out with the girls. Sexy and suggestive, the outfit could not be misinterpreted. Thus present-ing what I call a lack of confidence. As you read, you’ll see why. You see Anitra is single and unattached and in search of a “meaningful-committed-relationship”. Yep, that is one word. I wrote it so that makes it gram-matically correct. She has had several, unfulfilling, un-successful relationships that have yielded more disap-pointments than one should have to experience, but she is not giving up. She was brimming with confidence of her quest, in her “lack of confidence” outfit. Anitra didn’t care for the Night Clubbing or Dance Club genre that much, but she did enjoy being with her girlfriends. They, in their own way, equally attractive and desirable, were also their own “support group” of sorts. The thing they had in common the most was picking the wrong candidate for a mate. Every weekend they would go out with a quest, dressed in their best for finding the “right one”. Each one wishing the best for each other and se-cretly praying for themselves to be personally fruitful. The capsulated version of this scenario is that these women continually attract, and yes migrate towards a type not indigenous to the characteristics they so de-sire and require in a man. I’m concluding this scenario

abruptly because you are intelligent enough to get the gist and direction I am going with this. (I could take this in the direction of a romance novel but this ain’t no romance novel.) They keep failing in their quest because they keep on doing what they’ve always done. (When you do that, you keep on getting what you’ve always gotten. Duh? Same old routine yielding the same results, S O S D D.< Can you figure that one out? Somewhere I heard that the definition of insan-ity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. Hmmm, makes sense to me.) All of the men they’ve met in recent years were via the same method, going to the same type of venue, projecting the same type of message, amongst the same type of prospects. You can’t find diamonds by panning the river for gold. Here’s a word for you, extraordinary. You don’t get extraordinary by doing the ordinary. Duh! Helluurr? Are you hearin’ this? Dressing up in very nice night club garb gets you night club people, people. Don’t want night club people…? Don’t go to a night club. At the very least, don’t go to the club mak-ing the same presentation everyone else is making. When you do that, guess what type of man you are going to attract? A Super Sexy presentation attracts people that are there for that reason; to meet super sexy people. For super sex maybe? Ya’ think? Makes all the sense in the world to me. But what do I know?

TRU.love

Page 11: Tru. / Issue 5

I only write books about relationship stuff and I’m not even in one. (I am however, pioneering a way for a successful one for you and for me) Listen, the one thing you have in common, for the most part, with night club folks is that you are there to meet some-one. Conversely, (I like that word) they may not have the same goals you do forthat meeting. One night stands, casual relationship, (usually computes to casual sex most times), no strings attached, are a few that come to mind. And here you are looking for a husband (ultimately)? Or at least a LTR?<Long Term Relationship. In a night club? Dressed in a fashion that exudes “sexy”? And you want someone that wants you for your mind? Do think they can read your mind? What image did you project? What did you communicate? What did you present? Well guess what you are not going to attract? Jesus, I need a break. I’ll be back, NEXT MONTH! ~ KICKIN IT WITH KEITH! PSYCHE! Okay I’m back now, but guess what? I’m still just as passionate as I was earlier, just in control of it now…I think. One reason for that passion is that I truly, truly, think and believe that women can control, mandate and dictate the di-rection of a relationship or acquaintanceship (I think I just made up a new word?) goes. (Oops, no I didn’t) Particularly, at the beginning!!! Remember Anitra? For six days a week, she presented and represented what she was really all about, yet on Saturday…she “presented” a whole different persona. ”Intelligent, educated, successful in her career, spiritually ground-ed, politically aware, self-sufficient, popular and en-gaging, Anitra, is a very desirable woman”- Sunday through Friday. And suddenly, on Saturday night…? However, on this evening’s occasion, as is usual most every Friday and Saturday, she is wearing an outfit that indeed is trendy and common for a night out with the girls. Sexy and suggestive, the outfit could not be misinterpreted. Anyway, I was convicted to write this because I want you to know one reason why I, as a man, think and believe you keep attracting the same “types of men.” Could it be that you present the same type of magnet? Could it be that you keep pre-senting yourself at that same level-typical? Are you presenting priorities or disguising them? Obscuring them in order to get more attention? Do you have to have attention to be attractive? No! What you need is one to be interested in you. Attract someone interest-ed in knowing you. What is your priority, attraction or interest? Let’s talk about priorities. Let’s touch and agree that your ultimate priority is marriage. What

image are you presenting when you dress sexy to get a man’s attention? What are you communicating to him? I addressed this in DANCE, my first book. You mightta, oughtta, wanna read it, if you haven’t already. People interpret what you are communicating mostly visually, 55% actually, by what they “see”, and 38% by what they hear. What they “see” is your boobs. What they “hear” is your boobs talking. They, your boobs, are not saying “I am an intelligent, sharing, sweet, sensual, not sex-ual, compassionate, kind, and Spiritual woman.” And you…a person have yet to say a word! So what have you communicated? What is your priority? I just heard someone out there say “I don’t dress sexy to get aman’s attention, I dress sexy for me.” Shut up! I heard Little Richard say that. If you look and dress sexy for you, or for any other reason, guess who else thinks you look sexy too? Folks, this is part of why you attract who you attract is truly not that complex, and if you are arguing to defend your right to “dress any way you want!”…

I really will see you next month! I’m out.KICKIN’ IT WITH KEITH

understand. Miki and Chaka Khan told me,

“You were given that task

because God knew that you would take

care of it... and Vesta did to.” Those words helped me get through that experience.

TRU: Wow, that had to be difficult. What helped you to transcend from that?SETH: I am finishing a book and documentary on my mother and her sisters in song in Parliament-Funk-adelic called “The Girl is Bad- The Story of the Wom-en of Parliament-Funkadelic.” I have been doing in-terviews with the original members of The Brides of Funkenstein and Parlet, as well as George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Garry Shider, Sly Stone, Bernie Wor-rell and many others in the P-Funk organization. I want to present a multi-sided account of their story. That has been a project that has been in motion for years. I am also still working with Maxi B. and Cheri Wells of the original Mary Jane Girls. They are doing shows with the original Stone City Band. Maxi is also writing her second cook book. Her first “Champagne and Collard Greens” sold out a couple of printings. This new book is a super foods book called “Beauty and the Feast (for life).” I always do all of the photog-raphy and layout.I am launching my own skin care company, “Ground-ed Skin Care.” It will be a line of skin care from liquid and bar soaps, to facial masks and exfoliates. All of the products are made with 75% or greater organ-ic content, that’s where the name Grounded comes

ON BLAST with….SETH NEBLETT

Seth is a young artist and business man who caught our eye on facebook a few months back. He’s the son of well known vocalist Mahlia Franklin, known for her singing chops and reign as one of the Queens of George Clinton’s, Parliament-Funkadelic-Brides of Funkenstein. He’s also the “adopted nephew “of R & B Legends like; Chaka Khan and Miki Howard, so needless to say Seth has been around music and ce-lebrities all of his life. We wondered what he’s up to and into so…we asked!

TRU: Do you play any musical instruments or dabble in music production at all, since it obviously runs in the family?SETH: My dream was to follow in my mom’s foot-steps and be a singer. I didn’t have the unbelievable voice that she had, but I could carry a tune and could dance my behind off. At 18, there was even interest from a fledgling new record company, called LaFace. They were interested in me possibly being their “Al B. Sure!” I was young, light skinned, with a curly flat top to the sky and had some musical pedigree behind me, but I was still really green and insecure. The guys that were LaFace’s A&R had gotten their hands on a demo and a picture when I was in a duo called Cherry Vine. They contacted me and told me that they were inter-ested in me, but not my partner. They were showing interest, but I wasn’t ready, not sure if that was a mis-take or not.

TRU: Hmmm, well I’ve gotta say I like your honesty. So Seth, which aspects of the music biz do you prefer the most and why?SETH: I am a creative person by nature, I was always the costume designer, choreographer, singer, pho-tographer, etc. That’s what comes to me naturally. I manage artists because I know how to. I have never solicited myself as a manager, but artists have always wanted me to manage them and I have been bless-ed to manage artists that have had track records like Miki Howard, Vesta and Mary Jane Girls. But if I had my way, I would be more on the creative side. But,

I am blessed to know both ends of the game. Miki Howard calls me “The fork in the road” because so many artists have come to me for some sort of com-fort. I unfortunately had the task of finding Vesta’s body when she passed and at the time, I could not

from-the gifts from the ground. We are de-veloping products with honey, sugar, flowers, spices, coffees and sea algae and scenting them with oils from all over the world. I am very excited about it. I am also working with some of my celebrity friends to do signature lines within the Grounded brand. Chaka Khan and myself are collaborating on a Chaka signature line called “Tunisian Nights” inspired by her songs “A Night in Tunisia.” The line will launch in September 2012, but go to the web sitew-ww.groundedskincare.com and sign up on the mailing list to get some samples and goodies. Also, “like” us on facebook at www.facebook.com/groundedskincare. We will be launching all the new products there first and offering greats specials, etc.

TRU: You sound extremely busy Seth, so what do you like to do in your down time?Seth: I’m a reality TV junkie... I confess. But I’m always thinking up ideas and being cre-ative for the most part. I love movies, concerts, etc. I also write stories and treatments for films that are swirling around in my head.

TRU: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?A: I see Grounded Skin Care being extremely successful. I see the book on my Mom and the Women of P-Funk being developed into a film. It would be a great vehicle for an ensemble cast of great black actresses. I see myself possibly directing that film. I see myself enjoying life, appreciating life, thanking God and giving something back to the world.

And that’s the Tru. Mag BLAST on Seth Neb-lett….till soon. Keep it Tru!

‘Smoove’ Second!Tru. Advice

Every now and then we ALL need… just a little help.w/Mike Smoove

Q; From: Fay, in ArizonaDear Mike, I’d like to know what possesses men to ask a lady for their #, act com-pletely interested, then NEVER CALL! -FayA: Well Fay, I’m sorry to hear that one. You thought you found someone to watch that Redbox with, now you’re back to taking the batteries out the remote control into your bedroom again. LOL… You know, unfortunately sometimes men and women are similar in the way that we all want to know that we “still got it.” Women take an hour getting ready, wear appealing clothing, and love the attention they receive. Men, shave, put on their favorite shirt & cologne, and go out for the hunt. That’s right, don’t forget men are primitively hunters. We go hunting & fishing and tell stories about our success and how big the fish was. In

this case, how thick she was… j/k. (no you ain’t Mikey). So my thoughts would be usually if a guy doesn’t call here’s my options of why he didn’t call you:a) He was just harmlessly flirting with you. He might’ve wanted to know that he could get it, but really didn’t want it.b) He has a woman at home and he has a free night. He might’ve been coming hard at you because he was on a time limit and was trying to see if you were “wit it…you didn’t give it up or show enough signs that he could hit it that night or you could be “smush-friends” and now he’s back to his real life.c) You show some symptom of “Psycho-bitch-ophelia”(translation, psycho-bitch) a common disorder that is usually well hidden, but after a few experiences men can sometimes identify this from a look, a twitch, or a reaction that sometimes you think you might have repressed.d) Or, a simple error might have happened; he could’ve entered a number wrong, didn’t save it right, or forgot what “guy name” he gave you in his phone…damn.

Q: From; Keith, in Atlanta: If you like someone and you think that the person is liking you back just the same, but the only thing is that the person your “diggin on” has a mate- what should you do?A: Hahaha…Good one. Yo, in that case brother, that’s when I say “Just K.I.S.S.” Just Keep It Smoove & Simple. First thing’s first. Is he or she thick? Na, I’m just play-in’! But for real; ask yourself what do you really want out of this? More than likely the only thing you might want from it is to get what you can’t have. It’s the hunt. But once you catch it & kill it (if you know what I mean…), then what? I mean, YEAH!! It’s fun, exciting, and sexy. But, it really comes down to how will you feel the day after. Have you ever, hit somebody you met at the bar and wake up the

next day like…DAMN! Now you gotta get rid of ‘em…LOL, and now that’s one more person you gotta text, fol-low up with, answer too, etc.… Be honest, would you want to date THAT person? Would you ever trust them? You know what? I’ll even give you the benefit of the doubt, maybe they’re truly in a crazy situation and are dying to get out, you’re the only dude they’re like this with, this is the first time they’ve ever been like this with someone, and you two really have something special. LOL, SIKE!! Alright, back to the real world.Brah, that person ain’t faithful. Do you like them or the fact that he or she is a sexy person who has an option and is choosing you as their preference? I’ve been there. Trust me, never forget what it REALLY is; he or she is a cheater. You said they have a “mate” not a confirmed girlfriend or boyfriend. Mates are supposed to be for life; this is how he or she acts with the person they’re supposed to be with for life? That person is a rat…so if you’re

lookin’ for love, it’s in all the wrong places! If you’re looking for lust in a cheap hotel, I can tell you it’ll feel better in a Microtel than in a Motel 6 and it’s only $60! Go ahead and have your fun playboy, I just hope two things: A: he or she ain’t married and B: you don’t know the spouse. Stick to the G Code (Guy Code), you don’t have to have the best standards, just have some! LOL

Q; From: Tracy, in NebraskaHey Mike, What is it in a person’s personality that causes them to Smile in your face & then turn around and tell people they hate you? Got to be a disorder...HELP!A: The First thing that comes to mind- Again…,“Psycho-bitch-ophelia”(transla-tion, psycho-bitch) Part of their issue is that they’re a coward! Wouldn’t you agree? I mean, if they weren’t a coward, they would at least express to you what they really think or feel about you.I think of when black people had have to deal with racism. I’d hear people say, “people are more racist in the south, but at least they’ll tell you to your face!” You know, I’d respect a person more if they told me to my face how they really felt.

I know everybody is cordial with certain people here and there or they will bite their tongue for authority. So, if this person is not your boss, they don’t pay your bills, or aren’t anyone of real relevance in your life; fu*%^ ‘em!Some people just are who they are and they ain’t gonna change! People that smile in your face have that disorder as a part of their character and it’s bigger than you. The worst thing you can do is take it personal. If it wasn’t you it would be (and more than likely is) someone else. The bigger question, the question that you should be asking is, why are YOU allowing them to remain to have so much significance in your life and giving them so much thought and energy? You would only disgrace yourself by letting them still be who they were in your life after you know how they really feel about you, and even worse how they talk about you to others…like I said earlier….Fu*# ‘em!

Q: From; Aaron, in Minneapolis: My Mom said I need to be single for “quite a while”......how long is that?A: Usually Momma knows best! My guess is, if your mom says you need to be single for “quite a while” she sees an issue she wants you to realize and fix your-self. Your mom ain’t stupid, she could’ve given you advice about women or relationships; and she didn’t. Instead, she’s wise enough to realize that you’re gonna do what you want to do. Which, is usually based off of what you feel; and that is based off of what you think. Mom’s telling you to slow down, step back, and make better choices. I’ve been that guy who just goes from one relationship to the other. I get it. Who wants to wake up alone or with the next contestant? It’s easy to dive into relationships. People are so damaged by precious failed relationships and so ready to be in a great one that they trick themselves into feeling like they love someone faster than they should. People almost reactively say “I love you” and “I love you too” like saying “God bless you” when someone sneezes. It’s a premature attachment.Maybe your mom sees

you doing this and hopping from one relationship to the next. It sounds a bit cliché, but she’s right. You should probably take enough time to get to know and love yourself so you don’t feel you need to be with someone else so they can love you. It will raise your standards for the next person and consequently probably make that person last longer in your life. YOU need to understand YOU better. If you’re just looking for a playmate cool, don’t change anything. But, if you’re looking for a solid and worthy relationship, listen to your mom. It’s the same reason we grab junk food; you have an appetite for something and you’re starving for it so bad you grab the first thing that looks appetizing! But of course, we think we always knowbetter, yet continue making the same dumbass mistakes. LOL….. Slow down brah; trust your mom, she sees something you don’t. Don’t give in so early. If you want someone or something worth the wait, you have to wait. You’ll know when it’s the right time. It’s Smoove and that’s my Tru. Advice in a Smoove second… I’m out.

*You can email your question to me (along with a good quality picture of yourself) to; truentmagazine.com Make sure that you address ME (Mike Smoove) in the subject line of the email and we’ll try to get your question answered in the next issue of Smoove Second!Keep it Tru!

Life Goes On..........Sometimes unfortunate things happen- you get bad news, there’s a loss of some kind, or plans fall through…and a little piece of you dies inside. It feels like it’s the end of the world so you cry, get angry, or isolate yourselves to try and escape your reality. This is normal. You may even say we quit, give up, and don’t care…but deep down inside, we do.Why? Because there’s a greater piece of you left that knows life goes on! One of my favorite affirmations is, “This too shall pass”. I say it all the time because it’s a reminder that this season won’t be around forever and that despite what has happened, life goes on….with or without me. So why should I get left behind! You also have places to go, people to see, and things to do!

5 Tips to Help You Let Go and Move On1. Accept what happened. It may or may not be your fault but nevertheless, you can’t change the fact that it occurred so be okay with it. This is often the hardest thing to do but the most important.2. Forgive yourself or others. Holding a grudge only allows others to have power over you. Take your power back by for-giving them for hurting you. Most importantly, you must for-give yourself. We all fall short and don’t always makethe best choices. Don’t beat yourself up, just move on.3. Learn the lesson. When you know better you do better so learn the lesson from all situations. Take time to evaluate what happened, why it happened, and what you can learn from it so the next time you see yourself headed in the samedirection or spot a red flag…you can avoid getting involved!4. Get focused. Instead of focusing on what has gone wrong, focus on what is going right. Don’t worry about the people who betray you but love on the ones who support you. Seek out people and environments that bring out the bestthoughts and feelings so you can move forward with passion and motivation.5. Make a move. When you sit around sulking and complain-ing…you not only sink deeper into negative emotions but you waste time that could be used on something more productive.

Getting up and doing something constructive is agreat way to get your mind on what is important- your goals and dreams. An idle mind is the devils playground. Take action daily and accomplish much. That’s a natural mood booster.

Have you heard the news? HEALTHY IS HOT!

I am sure your are bombarded with so much information these days about why you should eat more fruits and vegetables, move more, and take time for yourself. The reality is-IT’S TRUE!

……NEWSFLASH!!!!You don’t wake up with a chronic PREVENT-ABLE lifestyle disease. It takes years to de-velop. Think about what would happened if you never changed the oil in your car, it would blow your engine out and stop work-ing. At first it would drive, then problems, and finally one day while driving down the street, it goes clonk, boom- dead! Now… compare the car to your health! Our body was not designed to eat the way we do in today’s world. We literally are what we eat. As much as I love the way my homemade red velvet cake tastes, if I at the entire cake every day without a gazillion loads of move-ment and exercise, my outcomes probably would not be positive. So, I encourage you to get moving, eat less, stay healthy and be well in 2012!

Remember, HEALTHY IS HOT!

“Get in the Game”

Page 33: Tru. / Issue 5

“Get in the Game”- with Rickey Young!Hey it’s me again, Rickey.I would like to talk about the guy on the cover.

Mr. Adrian Peterson has, in a very short time, taken the NFL by storm. He is, in my opinion, one of the top 3 talents ever in the league. He is in the ranks of legend players like Barry Sanders and Walter Payton. People come to the game just to see what these electrifying players are going to do next. And non Vikings fans buy a ticket to a Viking game just to see what Adrian might do on the field that day. Other players when playing against the Vikings stand-up on the when the Vikes have the ball because they don’t want to miss AP and one of his special runs.I was in Mankato at the Vikings training camp on Saturday watching a team scrimmage. Out

of the corner of my eye I caught AP on the sideline waving into a section of fans in the stands. Kids calling out his name, & AP turns with his dynamite smile and waves. Each of the fans in that section swear he is waving to them. He makes people feel so good. He has it all…fame, ability, talent, good looks. He has reached super-stardom and is a busy man, but not so busy looking at himself to see all of the people around him. He still he makes the time to wave and smile at his fans. This is an amazing quality AP has.I played 4 years with Walter Payton at Jackson State College. I blocked for him tirelessly, & I couldn’t wait to get my block and watch him run & do his magic. It is a privilege to watch A.P. I know he has the talent to be that specialplayer and I wish I could block for him too, he is just as special as “sweetness” on the field. Adrian, to you I say don’t rush the heal, and please take your time to get back on the field. We need you for years to come, you are on your way to Hall of Fame, but make sure you take your time to heal. We care about you & your future health. On a related note, next week I travel to Jackson, Mississippi to participate in the Walter Pay-ton Memorial Celebrity Scholarship Golf Classic. It is Aug 17-19th. It is sponsored by Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica, Mississippi. Many NFL former players participate. Walter Payton was a dear friend of mine. My college roommate and team mate. Walter was always a caring man. Even in his death he never stopped caring for others. If you are around the Jackson Mississippi area, stop by and play with us. As we keep his memory & dream alive, always trying to give back.-Rickey

Traveling Incognito By: Poet Cathy Ketchmark

Dusk falls with an elongated hush, the Universe’s collected sighs As all God’s crea-tures struggle, to re-gather their tenacity once again To face the glorious promise of a

new dawn.It is during these magical twilight hours, that unseen spirits tend to gather. Awakened by the velvet of burgeoning darkness, as most of creation hunkers down for their eve-

ning rest. They are eager to take advantage of the temporary gossamer weightOf the veil that separates the living and the dead. Traveling invisible in moonlight shad-ows, silent but by no means taciturn, They speak softly of their bottomless secrets, to the slumbering hearts of former playmates. Startlingly alive in the hope that they may heard once again. So when dusk next falls with it’s elongated hush, Lay down to rest

and close your eyes. But rather than surrender to sleep’s heady narcotic, Listen close-ly, beyond the new ringing in your ears. You will hear a heavenly choir and the voices

of those Who have passed over to the other side before us.

Mike HolmesEntrepreneur/CEO Hustle Mode

Michael Holmes is a self-motivated entrepreneur. He attended Normandale Community College for Business Management and out of college went from being a server, to running six Check Cashing Stores, and spending 9yrs as a Mortgage Loan Officer. He now runs a Storm Restoration company in Minneap-olis that assists homeowners with Insurance Claims. He attributes his success to learning from others successful and unsuccessful businessmen, listening and understanding people, and actually caring about people and having integrity when dealing with people. That’s one of the secrets to my success; that and getting out of bed in the morning!”

O.k., so…I got curious because a few truly talented and successful individuals on the scene in Minneapolis caught my eye. I really wanted to know, what made them “tick” what drew them AND kept them, in the game. Being an entrepreneur/ business owner myself, I know that it’s no easy challenge. Quite the contrary, in fact there are many days that I wake up in a cold sweat totally gripping the sheets because I can’t imagine how I’m gonna make today happen! Seriously it’s like being in a scary movie sometimes, trying to hang on for your dear life. These Entrepreneurs, all four of them have a “secret” they have a lust, a zeal and a hunger that drives them forward each and every day-no matter what! Honestly, for me, this article is “personal” because I want YOU our readers to understand this struggle, to get THIS STRENGTH. I want you to have a glimpse into the life of…a self-made man/woman. And, if you are one…then, herein lies YOUR inspiration…KEEP IT MOVIN!

Question 1: Why choose to take the risk of operating your own business, especially in today’s economy when you can have the security of working a day job for guaranteed pay?

Page 51: Tru. / Issue 5

Filmmaker/Joe Carlini: As a filmmaker I can set my own schedule, and with different work i have on my agenda i can plan accordingly to make it all work. Plus the variety of work you can do is greater. Concert Promoter/ Pamela Weems: I actually work a day job for my security; Love Promotions is my hustle and has always been. My kids once said to me Mom this is your hobby because I did it be-cause I enjoyed what I was doing getting the word out to my community of what was happening in the City. Then one day I was beating the pavement putting up posters in businesses about an upcom-ing show. I decided to ride back around to see what the poster looked like from the street and the manager had taken it out of the window. I’ll never forget how upset I had gotten, I jumped out the car went into the business and had a talk with the man-ager. Of course he approved for me to put it back, my daughter looked at me and said Mom this is not a hobby anymore it’s a business. Love Promotions was established in 1990 we have over 2 decades of continuous service in the Twin Cities promoting everything from Hip-Hop to Opera.Talent Agent: Stephanie Allensworth: There never any guarantees these days. I watched my corporate department of 16 slowly get trimmed to just my boss and me. I felt like the writing was on the wall. I decided I wanted to be the master of my own destiny and not be one of those people that are shocked after 30 years of service when they no longer have that security of a corporate job. Entrepreneur Mike Holmes: My attitude is this: I can ALWAYS get a “9 to 5.” If I can always get that, it means that this is my comfort zone. Then ask is this where I want to be? Do I want to stay in THIS comfort zone? The answer is no. So you know the saying, “If you want something you never had; you have to do something you’ve never done.” I never had a Bentley, A Million-Dollar Home, or the comfort of knowing that if I didn’t go to work this week I would still have money coming in. It didn’t take long to figure out that most Americans are one paycheck away from being in poverty. I came from poverty; I don’t want to go back. So now I have to extinguish my fear.

Question 2: What is the most frustrating as-pect of being an entrepreneur?Filmmaker/Joe Carlini: Probably the inconsis-tency of work. It’s not Monday through Friday, it’s setting your own work schedule. Also the stability isn’t the greatest. The startup is also very challeng-ing. So it definitely takes a certain type of person. Concert Promoter/ Pamela Weems: The most frustrating part of being an Entrepreneur is being a woman in a man’s world. The music industry is predominately run by men so it gets frustrating at times. Like, when I’m the only female on the set and there are men acting and looking like; here she is

again! Yes I am Standing 5’12 and it also gets frus-trating with all the new comers, coming into the business with no business etiquette.Talent Agent: Stephanie Allensworth: Having to do EVERYTHING yourself to get it started. I wear many hats every day. Luckily I took an Entrepreneur class in college so I was a little more prepared than just winging it. I’m also extremely gifted at multitask-ing. I also hate the telephone but it’s a necessary utility. Entrepreneur Mike Holmes: I think one of the most frustrating things about being an Entrepre-neur is nothing is guaranteed. If you wanna swim with the big kids, you gotta take the lifejacket off. Some people want to stay in the shallow end with cute little floaties on; that’s the typical job. You will never be comfortable like that; you will learn to be dependent forever. In that analogy, it would be having a floatation device or standing on the pool bottom. You have to take a risk and go out in the deep end; and that will prepare you for the world. That will give you freedom. Trust me, there are times when I’m flat broke. But, like any practice you get better with time. So ask yourself this; “Would I rather be risk being broke when I’m younger or older?” It’s a no brainer huh? That’s what I thought…lol I’ll take the risk of being frustrated and having a time or few being broke now to have it figured out by time I’m 50. Being broke at 50 ain’t sexy and it definitely ain’t cool!

Question 3: If you could change anything about the game, what would it be? Filmmaker, Joe Carlini: If people who aren’t in the entrepreneur game would understand how hard it is to get established. And if they understood you really have to always self-promote because no one else will for you. And it’s not that you think your better then them or trying to show off, it’s just what it takes to survive. Concert Promoter, Pamela Weems: I would change things back to the way they were in 1990 when the game was real and you could trust peo-ple that you worked with. You didn’t have to worry about people not having your back. Members of the game respected each other.Talent Agent, Stephanie Allensworth: Having to do EVERYTHING yourself to get it started. I wear many hats every day. Luckily I took an Entrepreneur class in college so I was a little more prepared than just winging it. I’m also extremely gifted at multitask-ing. I also hate the telephone but it’s a necessary utility. Entrepreneur, Mike Holmes: I would change people’s way of thinking. You don’t get what you deserve in life; you only get what you ask for! And if you don’t ask for more you will not get it! I see people who deserve to sit and punch a clock, and I’m not necessarily bashing that lifestyle. I just can’t stand when I see people who truly are built for

Page 52: Tru. / Issue 5

more, but programmed for less. Also, when I try to convince some to switch into a different way and either they can’t, won’t, or just don’t. I’m not an expert on socioeconomics nor do I pretend to be, but I know there’s a place for everyone. I’m just blessed to have the blessings I do at this moment and I will SQUEEZE THE JUICE out this thing as long as I have it in my control!

Question 4: If it’s just not working out for your grind or hustle when do you say - when?Filmmaker/Joe Carlini: Always stay with your dream! Concert Promoter/ Pamela Weems: You know what… there is no “when” because it’s in my blood. I’ve thrown the towel in many times. But when I wake up in the morning I’m back on the grind!Talent Agent, Stephanie Allensworth: The bottom would have to totally fall out from under me for me to quit. I’m not a quitter but I am inventive. I will re-invent myself and my business as needed until I’m satisfied. Entrepreneur, Mike Holmes: I feel if you’re not really “swinging the bat” you’re doing yourself an injustice. On the other side of things, if you are giving it your all and it’s not producing; you have to give yourself a real-istic timeframe to judge if it’s working or not. “Give me 5 to 6 hours a day for 5 to 6 days a week for a month and if you’re convinced by then, it’s probably not for you.” So the answer to that question is different for every person in each scenario. Just be smart enough to know when that is. If you’re trying to swim, don’t get out the water too soon; and don’t wait until you drown.

Well, there you have it. Now it’s time to go and get YOUR hustle on!Keepin it Tru.

B’Tyli (Be-Tie-Lee) Natural Skin Therapies were created to bring healing not only to the skin, but also to the mind and spirit as well, by using the wonderful benefits of aroma-ther-apies, silky smooth butters and cell regenerating oils.B’Tyli is not just skin care in a bottle, but it is my message to educate people about the importance of using natural and or-ganic ingredients on their skin and how it really does make a difference in how we look and feel. I know this first hand. My

young son had a very severe case of eczema, and I could not find anything to relieve his discomfort. I did some research and started formulating my own oils and creams, and they worked. I was fas-cinated with all I learned about the chemicals they put in creams and lotions and how they can af-fect our bodies. The good news is that I created an alternative. I wanted to know more, so I decided to go back to school and study Holistic Nutrition. I have learned so much, and this knowledge has benefited my family tremendously. We carry natural and organic cleansers, moisturiz-ers, tonics, serums, scrubs, moisturizers, cleansers, clays, body butters, body oils, organic teas, body brushes, body muds for cellulite, chakra balanc-ing elixirs(oils), lip balms, mineral make-up and

B’Tyli Beauty Bar Tip! This month we are high-lighting our lovely, wise women in their 60s...A good skin care approach for women in their 60s includes keeping your face moisturized, wearing sunscreen, occasionally exfoliating gen-tly to remove dead skin cells, eating nutritious food, keeping your body hydrated by drinking lots of water, not smoking and exercising on a regular basis. A major key in this stage of life is moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Keeping skin hydrated from the inside and topically is key. Continuing with a powerful anti-aging serum is also key to keep your skin hydrated, lifted and tight.

Our OM3 Serum is the most powerful thing the ladies in this decade could use. Also using our facial elixirs on the face, neck and chest will keep that skin moisturized and feeling tighter.

“Chicago” takes the Twin Cities by Storm!Sex, Sizzle, Murder and Wow! These are words that define the stage production of “Chicago” currently playing at St. Paul Minnesota’s Ordway Theater.

“Chicago” is a dark and very sexy musical surrounding Roxie Hart (Tracy Shayne) and Velma Kelly (Terra Ma-cLeod), two wanna be vaudeville entertainers sent to the slammer for murder. Add one money hungry attorney Billy Flynn (John O’ Hurley), one crooked but likable jail matron, Mamma (Roz Ryan) and Roxie’s gullible yet lovable husband, Amos Hart ( Ron Orbach) and you have not only a great cast but a really great show.Bob Fosse’s direction and choreography is steamy and sexy from the opening act till the final curtain call. The musical numbers are fantastic and take you on a journey of highs and lows from the wonderful opener with “All That Jazz” through the dark and sexy “Cell Block Tango” to the sad “Mister Cellophane” then closing with a big bang with the “Hot Honey Rag”.The entire cast, including the ensemble players brought their A game to opening night.Bravo!
