Brother Knights and Families in Christ,

I pray thisAdvent season is a blessed one as we ready ourselves to welcome our Lord’s presencein the world, which is the real meaning of Christmas.

The story of Jesus’ birth is very similar to our own life stories, of love, hope and prayer. As wecelebrate the birth of our Lord JesusChristwith our family, friends and co-workers, I praywe also givethanks for the many blessings He has so graciously bestowed upon us. I pray for a Christ-centeredChristmas for all brother Knights and Knight Families. Take some time to reflect on the real meaningof Christmas while spending quality time with Jesus and family this Christmas season.

Speaking of time, the demands of a State Deputy can be great and many, but I cherish each day Ihave the opportunity to serve. Just a few weeks ago, I had the honor and privilege of attending theMid-Year State DeputyMeetings in Orlando, FL.While mid-November typically is a great time for aNebraskan to visit Florida, I can assure you theweatherwas overshadowed by themessage deliveredby Supreme Knight Carl Anderson.

The Supreme Knight told us that our first and primary responsibility as leaders of the Knights isto assure the continued growth and sustainability of ourOrder. The emphasis of ourmeetingswas onmembership recruitment and retention, the need to need to set goals and enhance charitable activitieswithin our parish communities. Mr. Anderson stressed that while charitable activities are important, they arenot sufficient enough to advance theGoodof theOrderwithout continuedmembershipgrowth.

The State Officers and District Deputies gathered Dec. 2-4 at the Divots Conference Center andNorfolk Lodge and Suites in Norfolk for the 2016 Nebraska State Council Mid-Year meetings. Wediscussed the many challenges we face in carrying out the mission of the Knights of Columbusincluding, but not limited to, recruiting young men and fathers of young families.

Another topicwas the need to focus on programs relevant to familieswith young children and thenecessity to recruit youngermemberswith respect to the limited time young fathers have to participatein activities outside the home.

It’s also time we becomemore familiar with and use recruitment tools such as the Internet, socialmedia, text messaging. Times continue to change and wemust change with them.

We must remain optimistic and continue seeking the good in others, especially young adultCatholic men who want to be better Catholic men. We need to offer the gift of membership to them, and their “Yes” opens up opportunities to put their faith in action by coming together, serving others, growing closer to God and strengthening their faith.

Offering the gift of membership also is the gift of joy and fulfillment experienced in serving ourparish communities, thus living a more joyful Catholic life. Our Order evangelizes and brings thelove of Christ to those in need. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?

The Most Reverend George Lucas, Archbishop of the Diocese of Omaha, recently laid out hispastoral plan, “One Church: Encountering Jesus, Equipping Disciples, and Living Mercy.” HisExcellency is asking parishes to use existing programs to achieve those goals. Supreme Knights CarlAnderson’s “Building the Domestic Church” Initiative is designed to do just that. It gives Knightsand their families an opportunity to encounter Jesuswhile living out discipleship and showingmercyto others, drawing us to holiness and unity.

There is absolutely no organization in the world more committed to Pope Francis’s message ofcharity, unity and reaching out to those in need than theKnights of Columbus and I for one amproudto be a member!

Laurie and I pray for you, your families, and friends theseAdvent andChristmas seasons and askyou to pray for us as well. May the newborn Christ child fill your hearts with grace, peace and a lovethat pours out in abundance through the everyday witness of your lives.

Vivat Jesus!

4 Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Council

Words from our State ChaplainOur Supreme Knight’s initiative of “Building the Domestic Church while Strengthening our

Families,” continues to be a focus for the attention and energy of Knights around the world. Thewording has raised the question: What is the Domestic Church?

It will help to think about how we experience our participation in the Catholic Church. It iseasy to think about our parish experience. That is where we “go to church.” An importantdistinction to keep in mind is that the church building is a place set aside for the Church (withthe capital C), which is the Body of Christ, to gather in this particular place, to gather for worshipand prayer with each person fulfilling his or her own particular roles and responsibilities. Ourlife in the Catholic Church is experienced in our parish when we gather for worship; it is alsoexperienced when we work together to accomplish the mission of the Church. The Church isexperiencedmore fully at the diocesan level with our Bishop. This includes Bishops,Archbishops, and all who have receivedHoly Orders in the order of Bishop because that makes them successorsof the Apostles. When we are at a Holy Mass with the Bishop with all the orders and ministriespresent, we have a full experience of the life of the Local Church. Certainly if we were to havethe opportunity to participate in a Holy Mass with the Pope, we get the full experience of theUniversal Church.

In the Second Vatican Council, in the Constitution on the Church in theModernWorld, LumenGentium, we are taught, “From the wedlock of Christians there comes the family, in which newcitizens of human society are born, who by the grace of the Holy Spirit received in baptism aremade children of God, thus perpetuating the people of God through the centuries. The family is,so to speak, the domestic church.” (Lumen Gentium, 11)The family is the first place we experience the Church, the smallest unit of the Church, the

Church in the home, the Domestic Church. The Catechism gives more detail about this teaching:“In our own time, in a world often alien and even hostile to faith, believing families are ofprimary importance as centers of living, radiant faith. . . . It is in the bosom of the family thatparents are "by word and example . . . the first heralds of the faith with regard to theirchildren. It is here that the father of the family, the mother, children, and all members of thefamily exercise the priesthood of the baptized in a privileged way ‘by the reception of thesacraments, prayer and thanksgiving, the witness of a holy life, and self-denial and activecharity.’ Thus the home is the first school of Christian life and ‘a school for humanenrichment.’ Here one learns endurance and the joy of work, fraternal love, generous - evenrepeated - forgiveness, and above all divine worship in prayer and the offering of one's life.”(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1656-1657)The health and holiness of the family is important for many reasons. The Catholic Church is

first experienced in the family, and that experience gives a lasting impression about what it meansto be a Catholic, how one connects with the Catholic community colors, and how one willapproach life in the Church. From the parents, the children get their first experience of love -receiving and giving. This is the the children well-grounded, happy, as well as helps them toknow the goodness of God. Where the parents are full of faith and live that fully, the children aregiven the example not just of conducting their lives according to Catholic practice, but also ofconnecting with God and living out their relationship with God.

Pope Francis said, “Families are the domestic Church, where Jesus grows; he grows in thelove of spouses, he grows in the lives of children. That is why the enemy so often attacks thefamily. The devil does not want the family; he tries to destroy it, to make sure that there is nolove there. Married couples are sinners, like us all, but they want to go forward in faith, infruitfulness, in their children and their children’s faith. May the Lord bless families and

strengthen them in this time of crisis when the devil isseeking to destroy them.” (Pope Francis to the participantsin the 37th National Convocation of the Renewal in the HolySpirit, June 1, 2014).

Obviously, the enemy of our human nature, as St. Ignatiusof Loyola calls the devil, is working hard to disfigure ordestroy family life and families. It is more than the legalconfusion on what a family is, though that is destructiveenough. Where children don’t experience that kind of lovethat reflects the love of God, disruption, distance from God,and impaired sense of self impose limits or obstacles to thefull flowering of God’s possibilities for that child. Whereparents have a half-hearted observance of Catholic lifebecause of sin, self-absorption, or wrong priorities, childrenlearn life in the Church to be merely functional, without zeal, without love. These things have consequences for heaven, but they also affect future generations of their descendants.

Jesus came into our world from a family and into a family. The Divine Son, the Second Person of the Trinity, lives inunceasing communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit.God’s life is family life. When the Divine Son becameincarnate inMary’s womb, He also entered a family and livedfamily life. Howwonderful the family life of Jesus, Mary, andJosephmust have been! Certainly they had troubles, possiblydisagreements, but they persevered in goodness, faithfulness, and good example.

I think we can all see why our Supreme Knight is puttingsomuch focus on families and family life. Maywe as Knightsmake that extra investment in our families to make them fulland life-giving experiences of all that family life, our life inChrist, and life in the Church can be. May we also workdiligently with our pastors to help that reality be fostered inour parishes.

CHAPLAIN continued from page 4

We hope this time of year is a blessing to your family and that time allows youto enjoy your family in the spirit of our faith. With all the demands of the holidayswe must keep in mind the importance of family time and focusing on our SaviorJesus Christ. Even though basketball games, wrestling, hunting, movies, packages, getting goodies ready, and all the groups we are a part of are important and fun, wemust try to keep our family time and our focus on Christ a priority - something veryhard to do in these times. Including a quick prayer of thanks before an event orafter our successes is huge to a family’s understanding of how important Jesus is inour lives.

Our kids are extremely smart and really adapt to whatever we prioritize andfocus on. Theywill cherish and value the things that we as parents do and serve ourSavior just as we teach - if it’s our priority, it will be theirs.

God Bless Our Families!

Involve the Kids in Faith EventsAs a final note, we hope that our faith can continue to

grow and get stronger by involving our children in our faithevents. We are amazed at how excited our own children areto serve food, pick up trays, lead a prayer, sing at mass, andjust be helpful, but we have to be creative in asking them todo the work of God. We think that if you get them involved, you will be very excited to see their spirit grow.

Per Capita: Keep Your Council in GoodStanding and Eligible for Supreme andState AwardsPer Capita Due March 1, 2017

Every billable member of the Knights of Columbus is assessed by State and Supreme Councils. This state assessment is the per capita invoice each council’s Financial Secretary receives twice eachfiscal year. This payment does not require a council vote, so prompt payment should not be an issue.

Per capita is to be paid with council dues. Currently, the State Council assessment per billablemember is $8.75, with $4.37 to be billed January 1, 2017, due March 1, 2017 and $4.38 billed July 1,2017, due by September 1, 2017. Remember, a billable member does not include disabled andhonorary life members.Late Payment Risks Suspension

As your State Secretary, I am responsible for billing and collecting per capita payments. Whilea majority of our Nebraska councils remit payments on time, a few councils miss the deadline forpaying this assessment. The Grand Knight and Financial Secretary of each of these councils willthen receive a second notice billing. Prompt response to second notices helps avoid possiblesuspensions, but a late payment also disqualifies councils for all State and Supreme awards handedout during our annual April State Convention.

Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding State Per Capita and any other questions. We are here to support you. Thanks for all you do. May God bless you!

“We, as Knights andleaders in our parishes, need to help to build the

Domestic Church by sponsoringand promoting the many great

programs that our Councils presentthroughout the year.”

Building the Domestic ChurchThe Building the Domestic Church initiative calls on all councils to build up the

relationship between families and parishes and to strengthen our parish youth ministry. As we start our second half of the fraternal year, we really need to use our council

programs to enrich our parishes and communities. We need to heed the words of ourSupreme Knight Carl Anderson, “The family as domestic church is central to the work ofthe new evangelization and to the future sustainability of our parishes.”

We, as Knights and as leaders in our parishes, need to help to build the DomesticChurch by sponsoring and promoting the many great programs that our Councils presentthroughout the year.

This Advent, councils are helping to bring families closer to each other and to the HolyFamily by sponsoring “Journey to the Inn: An Advent Celebration”. This celebrationprovides ways to share the story of Jesus’ birth with the parish community and welcomesfamily participation, as well as consecrating the parish family to the Holy Family. These arejust twoways councils can participate in theBuilding the Domestic Church initiative. Checkout all the resources and other programs, such as “Family Fully Alive” and “Fathers forGood,” also available on the Supreme website, http://kofc.org/domesticchurch.Award Submission Due March 1, 2017

The Gift of Membership

Kevin OstdiekMembership Director402.438.2114 home402.613.1381 cell

[email protected]

“Every time thatwe offer a Catholic man

the gift of membership in theKnights of Columbus,

we are offering him a giftthat will be with himfor his entire life.”

I would like to take time during this Advent Season to discuss the gift of membership inthe Knights of Columbus.

Every time that we offer a Catholic man the gift of membership in the Knights ofColumbus, we are offering him a gift that will be with him for his entire life. Sure, we areoffering him a chance to secure the financial future of his family through our Order’s fantasticinsurance program, but we are also offering him a chance to grow in his faith and a place toput that faith into action. And, perhaps most importantly, we are offering him the possibilityof friendship with like-minded men who will be there for him wherever life takes him.

The great thing about the gift of membership, is that it rebounds to the council that recruitsthe new member. Each new member that a council recruits gains the gift of his work for thecouncil at fish fries, pancake feeds, and other projects. Councils gain the thoughts, ideas, andexperiences that each newmember bringswith him to help them run their eventsmore efficientlyand successfully. And, lastly, the council gains the gift of leadership that each newmember maybring with him as he is mentored and grows into a leadership role in the council.

This bringsme to the gift of continuedmembership in theKnights of Columbus to our currentmembers. Each year, every council has a few members who cannot or do not pay theirmembership dues andmust decidewhether to suspend these Knights. Unfortunately, there willalways be a fewmenwhodesire towithdraw fromourOrder, or are no longer practical Catholicsand need to be suspended. But, howmany othermen facing suspension could be offered the giftof continued membership in our order if we held out a hand of friendship to them?

In this, I don’t merely refer to offering to cover a member’s dues for a year. Primarily, Iwould suggest that the gift of continuedmembership should be offered through frequent androutine contact with all members. Most men join the Knights so that they can do something,to be part of something greater than they are, but if we never contact them, theymay never feellike they are a real member of the Knights. This may be as simple as calling members on theirbirthday or the anniversary of their 1st Degree, to ask them how they are doing and seeing ifthere is anything that the Knights could do for them. And yet, that annual phone call may bethe difference between amember gettingmore involved in the Order or feeling unwanted andforgotten about. That call may prevent him from one day being that Knight whom you haveto consider suspending.

So, in this season of preparation for the arrival of the Christ Child, I would like to ask everycouncil to look at making the extra effort to offer the gift of meaningful membership in our greatOrder. Offer it to all the Catholic men in your parish, whether they are current members or not.

A Sweetheart of a Deal!Everybody likes to give their sweethert a little something extra for Valentine’s Day, right?

This year, how about giving your council a little something extra, too?

I Will Defend ThemWritten by Josh Beaudoin,Beatrice Council 1723

I asked my wife, Tracy, to create adrawing to symbolize what a Knightdefends. I think the words “I willdefend them” summarizes the Knights’position.

The drawing includes a bishop, priest, sister and parish (the Church),a widow with children (the Knights’commitment to support the family) andthe U.S. flag with the Holy See symbol(for the principal of patriotism).

I have enjoyed this piece of art.It shows the importance of the Knightsof Columbus and of their duty to theChurch.

Tracy and I hope by sharing thiswith other Knights, it will help stir uptheir spirit for the cause.

On October 29, 2016, the St. Robert’s Knights ofColumbus Council 10108 in Omaha sponsored theJesusMy Friend retreat designed for adults 18 yearsand older who have developmental, cognitive,and/or physical disabilities. It was an interactivemorning filled with stories, scriptures, crafts, music, and games focusing on helping participantsunderstand Jesus as their best friend. It is designedto provide the participants with an opportunity toexperience Jesus as Friend and to deepen theirunderstanding of Christ’s personal love for each oneof them.

The Nebraska Knights of Columbus Intellectual DisabilitiesFoundation covered much of the cost of the retreat with adonation of $500 from the funds collected during the 2015Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

Three great ladies, Deb Brown, Anne Carter, and MaryNorris, were inspired to helpwith planning and conducting thisretreat. A variety of volunteers ranging from moms ofdevelopmentally disabled individuals to special educationteachers presented the simple lessons based on scriptures.

Rev. Eugene McReynolds, OSB, presented the openingsession. Fr. Eugene’s special warmth helped create a uniqueatmosphere for the attendees to encounterChrist andone anotheras Friend. He captured the retreatants’ attention almostimmediately.

Fr. Eugene has served as a Chaplain at Boys Town, and isdeeply sensitive to the needs of these special adults. Fr. Eugenewas assisted by theKnights of Columbus of St. Robert’s Council

Knights of Columbus Council 9264,St. Anthony’s, Columbus, recentlyhelped remove all of the pews and oldcarpet in the church and installed newcarpet. Initially the project was slated forthree consecutive weekends due to thetime for the carpet removal andinstallation, but after learning that itwould save the parish $1,000, theKnights removed the old carpet, and theproject picked up speed.

With approximately 75 Knights andtwo Squires donating their time overfour evenings, they were able to carpetthe entire church including both sidechapels in one week’s time. The carpetinstallers were busy trying to keep upwith us, and the results look great!

Sts. Peter and Paul Council 1918, St.Paul, welcomed theMost Reverend JojiGrovindu, Bishop of Nilgonda, India,as he visited the U.S. to check on the 25priests he has serving here. Fr. RayappaKonka of Sts. Peter and Paul CatholicChurch is one of these priests.

After celebratingMass onNovember11, the Bishop spoke of his diocese inIndia and his country. Then DeputyGrand Knight Neil Baquet presented theBishop with a check from the parish.Financial Secretary Chuck Schmid andGrand Knight Marshall Paczosafollowed Baquet and presented theBishop with a check for $250 from thecouncil.

It was evident that the retreatants really enjoyed themselvesand enjoyed their “friends of Jesus” in the activities. Their smilesand interactions made all the efforts of conducting the retreatmost rewarding. Many thanks to Council 10108 for sponsoringand for assistance with the funding of a fantastic retreat.

Next year’s retreat is already in the planning stages and is setforOctober 21, 2017 in theMainelli Center at St. Robert's CatholicChurch. Just knowing that many others strugglewith the same concerns as we do can invigorate and motivateus to continue our resolve to spread the Good News.
