A young person in Kentucky may join 4-H at the age of nine and continue his/her participation up through age 18. The age of a young person is determined by the age he/she is on January 1 of the program year. In 2006, this general policy was revisited and a clarification was put in place, particularly for the upper end of the age range. It becomes especially important when issues of fairness regarding competition are in question. Our ultimate goal is to offer the 4-H experience to as many Kentucky youth as possible.

Program Year: As of September 1, 2006, the “4-H Program Year” in Kentucky is September 1 through August 31. The 4-H Program Year is twelve months in duration.

Upper end of age range: Kentucky 4-H Age is the young person’s age on January 1 of the current program year. On January 1 of the current program year, a youth must be 18 years old or younger to participate in 4-H during that 4-H Program Year. When a youth is 19 years of age on or before January 1 of the current 4-H Program Year, that youth has completed his/her 4-H eligibility and may not participate in 4-H during the current 4-H Program Year.

For the 2020-21 Program year, if a young person's date of bir th is…

4‐H CROSS COUNTY LINES POLICY

Kenton County 4‐H Council will address cross county lines concerns for the 2020‐21 program year during their regular November 16 mee ng.  All requests to exit or enter a program must be received in wri ng and turned in to Diane Kelley, at the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on 11/16/2020.  As a general rule, a young person becomes a 4‐H member within the county where he/she is a resident or a ends school. Par cipa on close to home usually allows the young person and his/her family to become more fully engaged in 4‐H and more ac vely involved in the greater community. The family involved may bring the cross county lines form to the November 4‐H Council mee ng as well. Generally, where a young person par cipates in 4‐H becomes an issue when compe on is involved; where a young person is a member becomes important to fair and ethical compe on. It is assumed that a young person is a member of 4‐H in the county of residence or county where the young person a ends school. To compete as part of any other county’s 4‐H program, a transfer of membership must be clearly established through a request by the member, approval by the agents and councils involved, and appropriate documenta on. Determina on of whether a young person may cross a county line is to be completed on a case by case basis by the agents and councils involved.

Sincerely, County Extension Agents

The Huelsman family started their 4‐H journey with the horses and the Trail Blazers Club over 15 years ago. When their son Bradley turned 9 years old they became involved in the Livestock Club and Michelle started the Blazin’ Bridles Horse club. Through the years they have put many miles on their trailer hauling the family horse, Klu around to various events and shows and raising hogs for the fair each year. They have enjoyed the friendships they have developed within their clubs and ac vi es. It has been a pleasure to watch so many kids grow and learn through the values of the 4‐H program.

The Huelsman family is honored to receive the Lloyd Bridges 4‐H Family Award and have enjoyed their years with the Kenton County 4‐H program.
