Executive chef and part of the South African Chefs Association (SACA) Hanroe Erasmus has

achieved 17 awards in his 13-year career as a chef. Among his numerous accolades, he has won the Protea Hotels’ F&B Achiever of the Year Award in August 2014 and Best Dish at the Taste of Joburg Festival in 2012 and 2013.

Hanroe, who works at African Pride Irene Country Lodge, has also worked at the Sheraton Pretoria Hotel and says he doesn’t simply do a job, but has adopted a lifestyle. After high school he went on to study for an LLB degree at Rand Afrikaans University in 1999, but dropped out after six months to pursue his dream of becoming a chef. Today he could not imagine doing anything else.

“I really enjoy cooking South African-inspired cuisine and working with meat in any form so that I can showcase what South Africans have available in terms of cuisine. My favourite dish to prepare is the Kudu Wellington with port jus, but if I am home, I enjoy making a good ribeye steak on the braai,” he says.

Hanroe joined SACA – a non-profi t industry organisation representing chefs, cooks and caterers at all levels – in 2002. He says the association has

According to Hanroe, SACA holds regular seminars, workshops, educa-tional conferences and competitions annually and its assistance ensures the continuous development of young, aspiring chefs raising the profi le of South Africa’s diverse cuisine in countries across the globe.

He says with the predicted growth in tourism, the association’s role is becoming more important in maintaining the highest level of culinary excellence, food standards and professionalism throughout South Africa.

“There are many highlights working as a chef, but the main one that makes me extremely proud, is seeing chefs who previously worked for me grow and excel in the industry. I look forward to my future at Irene Country Lodge and encourage other young individuas to become chefs. Although it requires an enormous amount of work and dedication, being a chef is the most rewarding career anyone could dream of following,” says Hanroe.

F looring treatments can be the defining feature of a home, placing it squarely within

a specific style context. From the refined parquet of old flats to the shiny linoleum of suburban bungalows to the terracotta tiles of ’90s renovations, each style has a story to tell. The current trend is generally back towards either concrete or wood flooring again, but the most interesting developments lately have been in the latter.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a trend towards wood with a heavily distressed, almost burnt finish. It’s different from traditional stains and varnishes, however, in that the wood is literally distressed and not simply painted to look the part. At interior trade shows, pieces are often put through their paces – they are smoked, charred and boiled in oil to create a deep, dark finish. It’s a continuation of the trend towards

heritage and heirloom items, and immediately imbues pieces and spaces with a sense of timeworn appeal.

At the consumer end of the spectrum, we’re seeing the black wood trend surfacing subtly in wooden flooring and furniture. As Barry Solomon from Cape Town’s BestWood Flooring says, “After years of relatively lighter and neutral tones, we are seeing a return to the assuredness of a richer, deeper look.” Most homeowners would balk at floors and furniture that look like they’ve survived a blaze, but the appeal of pieces that look like they’ve survived the decades with some scars to prove it, seem to be more than welcome.

Fix your debt

Value of global property is 2,7 times the world’s GDPThe total value of all developed

real estate on the globe reached $217 trillion in 2015, according

to calculations by international real estate advisor, Savills (represented in Africa by Pam Golding Properties).

The analysis measures the entire developed property universe including commercial and residential property, as well as forestry and agricultural land.

The value of global property in 2015 amounted to 2,7 times the world’s GDP, making up roughly 60% of mainstream global assets and representing an important store of national, corporate and individual wealth. Residential

property accounted for 75% of the total value of global property.

Yolande Barnes, head of Savills World Research, says, “To give this fi gure context, the total value of all the gold ever mined is approximately $6 trillion (about R96,47 trillion), which pales in comparison to the total value of developed property by a factor of 36 to 1.”

Overall, the biggest and most important component of global real estate value is the homes that people live in, totalling $162 trillion. The sector has the largest spread of ownership with approximately 2,5 billion households and is most closely tied with the fortunes of ordinary people.

In property terms the announcement of an increase in capital gains tax is

slightly concerning because it also affects properties in the mid-income range, but at the same time we’re grateful that there was no increase in transfer duties below R10m, nor an increase in VATLEW GEFFEN, CHAIRMAN, LEW GEFFEN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

A ccording to the latest fi gures from the National Credit Regulator, 23,45 million South

Africans are credit active. Of those, 42,3% have impaired credit records.

The stark reality is that many South Africans are struggling to meet the repayments on their debt. Over the last few years the people of this country have had unprecedented access to credit, and unfortunately many of us have not managed it very well. Many have found themselves in a spiral of taking on more and more debt to survive, and they need to fi nd a way out.

Unfortunately, this can be a very di� cult, and very painful process. However, it is possible if tackled in the right way. Anyone with debt problems needs to take these key steps:

1Commit to not taking on any more debt. Draw a line in the

sand so that you don’t make things any worse than they already are.

2Understand the situation you are in. Before you can fi x the

problem, you need to work out exactly how much you owe, to whom, and what interest rates you are being charged on every store card, credit card and loan you have taken.

3Negotiate with creditors. Speak to the companies you owe and

fi nd out which might be able to o� er lower interest rates or repayment holidays. Ultimately, they want to get their money back so they may be willing to come to an agreement that will give them a better chance of recovering what they have lent you.

4Settle on a game plan. The usual advice is to pay o� the debt with

the highest interest rate fi rst, but this may not always be the best approach if this will take a long time. You may prefer a quick win to make you feel that you are getting somewhere and that your goal is achievable. Paying o� the smallest debts fi rst may therefore give you the confi dence and momentum you need to tackle the rest.

5Make sacrifi ces. You are going to have to fi nd the money to pay

o� your debts, and that has to come from somewhere. Start by preparing a spending plan that allocates your monthly income to specifi c expenses, cutting back on those things that aren’t necessities. Also sell things that you no longer use or need or can simply do without. A cash windfall from selling clothes, electronics or DVDs could wipe out a chunk of what you owe and put you on the road to recovery.

Q: How did your business start?A: My business started when I

first began to participate at local fashion shows. Some of my designs were being showcased on the ramp and, after this, people started placing orders.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: I chose Arcadia as this is where I live. It is more convenient to operate my business from home, as it allows me to work extra hours without being worried about finishing too late.

Q: How did you find your premises?A: An agent assisted in

finding the premises.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: My home has a very modern feel to it and I literally live two blocks away from Metro, a material shop, which is very convenient.

Q: Who are your neighbours?A: My neighbours are young

professionals between the ages of 30 and 40.

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?

A: The rental prices are quite affordable.

Q: What is your shop footprint?A: I often go out to do some marketing

for my business. I try to reach a minimum of 20 people per week.

About the area

D ie Wilgers is a well-established and sought-after suburb in the east of Pretoria. Laid out

in the early 1970s, it is has a wealth of beautiful gardens and trees.

The suburb is located between Rubida Street to the west, Simon Vermooten Road to the east, the N4 highway to the north and the Bronberg range to the south. It has access to several major routes including the N4 highway, Lynnwood and Simon Vermooten roads.

The main attractions of the area are its location, amenities and active involvement of residents in managing the suburb. The residents of Die Wilgers strive to maintain the special character of the area through Die Wilgers Residents Association. It aims to maintain the quality environment of the suburb and facilitate communication between the community, the city council, and police to address issues such as traffic, safety, commercial development and street lighting.
