Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Little Wembley. We are delighted to welcome the players, officialsand supporters of Irlam to East Lancashire today and we wish them an enjoyable stay in our company beforehaving a safe trip home later this evening. At the time of writing Irlam have made a great start to the seasonand have enjoyed some excellent results including a draw with reigning league champions Formby lastweekend. I have seen them twice against 1874 Northwich and Widnes Vikings and on both occasions theyproved themselves to be a strong, physical side with good outlets on both the left and the right goingforwards. I am sure they will pose problems for us this afternoon and we will have to be at our best to getsomething from the game.

I am writing these notes before our midweek trip to Formby for what was expected to be our toughest testthis season so far. Last Saturday we enjoyed a hard fought 2-1 win over an improving Cheadle Town side andalthough our margin of lead should have been higher at the interval our visitors certainly came back into thegame strongly after the break. All of the games have been keenly contested so far this season and there isevery indication at present that the league is going to be very tight this season with a lot of sides havingimproved over the summer. We are certainly one of them and all that is important at this stage of the seasonis that we stay in the leading pack and do not allow a gap to develop.

I would like to bid a warm welcome to US based company SFI who are our designated match sponsors. Seemore about them and our developing internet marketing strategy on the Commercial Page. Don't forget thatthe best way to keep up to date with all the latest news is via our website www.nelsonfc.com . Social mediaenthusiasts can also 'like' our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/nelson1881 and follow us on Twitter@nelsonfc1 for regular matchday updates from all three of our teams.

Enjoy The Game.

On behalf of Nelson Football Club I would like to

welcome you all to another North West Counties League

encounter and also extend a special welcome to our

visitors from Irlam FC. Could their visiting officials please

note that this season hospitality will be provided in the

new Admiral Executive Suite which is the blue building

situated near the Main Stand. We had a great win at

home to Cheadle Town last week and hopefully we have

managed to get a result from our tough trip to Formby

on Wednesday evening.

Our Development Squad had a narrow reverse to Brighouse Town this week. I was not at the game but I

understand that we were very unlucky not to take something from it. Keep going Sam and the boys, you

are doing a great job and I know that results will come eventually. On another note we are looking for

someone who is interested in helping Sam out as Assistant Manager to the Development Squad. If this

might be a role that you or someone you know might be interested in then please e-mail our CEO in the

first instance at [email protected] for more information. Our Youth team had a good 5-2 win over

Lostock St Gerards last week and they will be playing their last pre-season friendly next Wednesday

against Accross Reserves before their league campaign gets under way.

Games with Irlam are always tough and I am not expecting anything different today. They started well

with some great results including being one of only two sides so far to have beaten Widnes Vikings and

no doubt they will be looking to build on that today. It is important that we all get behind the lads and

let them know there is a crowd on. I will also echo my comments in the last programme to encourage

you to come to Hanley on the coach next Weekend - your support really can make all the difference.

Enjoy the game and as usual I wish both teams all the best for the season.

Good afternoon everyone.

I’m writing this from before the Formby gamemidweek due to the print deadline, but my commentson that game will be online by the time you read this.

Irlam are the visitors today and they’ve had a goodstart to the season, Steve Nixon has done a great jobsince he took over and it’s my pleasure to welcomehim and his team today.

Those who watched us against Cheadle will know itwas a game of two halves from a performance point of view. We created some excellent openingsin the first period but let Cheadle back into the match second half and it’s something we are verymindful of. But as I said at the time, last season we would of drawn, or even lost that game and it’simportant for everyone to remember the distance we’ve travelled in a short period of time.

It’s still very early days, but I’m looking at our next 3 or 4 games as an opportunity to try andstretch our legs at the front of the pack. As I’ve said before, everyone is dropping points so theleague is there to be taken by the throat and ran away with.

Player wise we’ve trimmed the squad slightly, a couple of lads wanted guaranteed first teamfootball and we can’t offer that so they’ve departed. What we can offer is opportunities for ladswho want to progress, work hard and earn a place in the side, reputation doesn’t do much for me,I’ve seen players with big reputations really struggle in this league, you have to play a certain wayand that starts with hard work. I’ve been making some progress with a player who I feel willepitomise what we want to achieve, but as often is the case its taking a little longer thanexpected, once we have any news you will be the first to know.

Enjoy the game

Good afternoon everyone and once again welcome to LittleWembley.

By the time you read this we will looking forwards to a matchthat amazingly sees us already nearly a quarter of the waythrough our league fixtures. Whatever happened at Formby onWednesday night we are certainly in the top 4 and so we haveto say to Mark and the players 'so far so good'. The absoluteminimum requirement for this season is a top four finish and aguaranteed FA Cup place for next season but of course we areall hoping for a lot more than that. This game is the mid pointof a very tricky three match spell (the other two being Formbyand Hanley away) that will go a long way towards telling us ifthe current squad have genuine title credentials. If we can takesomewhere between 6-9 points from the 3 games then we are

going to be fairly close to where we need to be. Mark is still working on bringing players in to certain areas of theteam and I know that there has been criticism of one or two individuals on the unofficial forum. What I would say isthat our players are all of 'internet age' and so they are not immune from criticisms made online. I am all forencouraging healthy debate about the club but I would just like to ask you to put yourself in the players shoes forone moment. Think about it. You have had a bad game and you know that your place in the side is under threat. Youcan see from the video action that certain goals are coming from the areas of the field that you are entrusted withtaking care of. Do you think it is helpful then for that player to read on a Forum that they are useless (or worse)? Isthat going to help them to improve their game? I am not saying that we will not look to improve certain areas of theteam all that I am saying is that we are all in this together and the current squad is the current squad and all of themdeserve your full support whilst they are pulling on an Admirals shirt.

We are extending our Free travel offer for the Hanley Town away trip next weekend although I have to say that thetake up for the free coach offer has been a little underwhelming. I think that we have got a very attractive side thisseason that is playing some very high quality football and it is fair to say that it is not a squad that has beenassembled on the cheap!! It would be good then to see a few more supporters coming on our travels with us andshowing the world that Nelson FC once again means business. I know I keep going on about the 'lost generation' offans but the simple fact is that sooner or later we will need the public to come back to us. There is a certain amountof progress that can be achieved by commercial activity alone but at some point we will need to get bodies inthrough the gate if we are to progress as we want to up the leagues. The sooner the missing fans come back thequicker we can start progressing and so please continue to spread the word so that the momentum we are gainingis not lost again.

Enjoy the game.

The Development Squad continued their Lancashire League campaign with a 2-3 home reverse toBrighouse Town, although it was an improved performance after the opening defeat to AFC Emley. MickBerry marked his return from injury with a quick return to form, netting after just 3 minutes and therewas also a great performance in the first half from the returning Andy Eaton, although he suffered afurther reaction to his injury again at half-time which is a bit of a worry for us. Brighouse levelled beforethe break and then took a second half lead before Jonny Hession quickly restored parity once again. However a late winner saw the Yorkshireman take home all three points.

Phil Cain's Youth scholarship squad enjoyed an excellent 5-2 away win at Lostock St. Gerards as theygear up towards their opening East Lancashire Youth Alliance campaign. Next Wednesday they havetheir final friendly when they take on Accross Academy Reserves up at the college with a 12 Noonkick-off and once again your support would be appreciated if you can make it. FREE COACH TO HANLEY TOWN NEXT SATURDAYOn Saturday next the Admirals face one of their toughest away trips of the season when they travel to

Staffordshire to face currently unbeaten league new boys Hanley Town. The Stafforshire County League

champions have proved to be worthy opponents at this level and have already upset some of the

fancied sides in the division. It is the sort of game that we need to take something from if we are to be

successful this season and once again your support in this vital fixture would be very much appreciated

by the players. To book a FREE place on the coach please see Dave Edler this afternoon or call him on

07715 629525. Seats must be booked in advance to determine the size of coach required.

BIG LANCASHIRE CO-OP DERBY ANNOUNCEDNelson have drawn arch rivals COLNE at home in the opening round of this seasons Lancashire

Co-Operative Trophy. The competition offers a chance to play at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton to the

two finalists. The game takes place on Wednesday October 16th here at Victoria Park with a 7.45 pm

kick-off. With local bragging rights at stake it promises to be a great encounter against our Premier

Division near neighbours and we hope to have a decent crowd on.

AGENTS REQUIRED FOR NELSON'S NEW GOLD BOND LOTTERYThe new Nelson Gold Bond lottery is about to be launched and we are hoping that it will prove to be a

big money spinner that will eventually add funds to Mark Fell's playing budget. With a top weekly prize

of 2,000 pounds and many other prizes there are plenty of reasons to join for a One Pound weekly

stake. We are looking for collectors and agents to sign people up. People can pay weekly, monthly or

annually by giving cash to their agent or if they prefer by standing order or debit card. As an agent you

can earn commission on all the money you collect as well as a bonus for each new person you recruit for

the lottery. Agents hitting certain targets can also earn themselves extras such as a Free season ticket

and a Free Replica Shirt. Once again please contact Dave Edler on any of the ways above for more

details or to register your interest.

IN TOWN TODAYIRLAM FC

This particular section of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club was founded in October 1969 by a group ofemployees working for Mitchell, Shackleton and Company Limited, a well established engineeringcompany based in Patricroft, Eccles, which manufactures marine and diesel crankshafts.

The founding members of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club were Bob Cowlishaw (Chairman), Bill Russell(Secretary) and Charlie Flynn (Treasurer, who served the Club also served as Secretary with distinctionfrom 1981 until his death in 1994). They were ably supported by a Committee comprising of Alf Johnson(now Club President), Ged Moore (Kit Manager) and Stan Catlin (Team Manager). Although the Cub hasbeen in existence for over 30 years, Mitchell Shackleton FC can trace teams playing under the Company'sbanner as far back as 1935.

Initially, the Football Club was financially supported through the Company's active Sports and SocialClub, however the recession of the late 1970's led to the Company restructuring it's business interests, and unfortunately a reduction in the workforce.

These events inevitably led to the dissolution of the Sports and Social Club, and a splintering of thevarious sporting sections with each individual group becoming self-financing.

The Football Section based its headquarters at the Oddfellows Arms, Patricroft, before moving to StMichaels Community Centre, Peel Green in 1973, which was to become the Club's permanent base for thenext 29 years.

Mitchell Shackleton FC entered the Eccles and District Amateur Football League in 1970 where the Clubestablished itself without winning any major honours. After a two-year association with the Eccles

League, the Club sought pastures new by joining the Manchester Amateur League in season 1972-73.

It was in the Manchester Amateur League that the Club's reputation began to grow, winning the ThirdDivision (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships in successive seasons, and in 1975 areserve team was formed.

Between 1976 and 1978, the Club went through a transitional phase with younger players beingintroduced to the first team, and the formation of a new management team of George Walker, Billy Halland Jimmy Preston.

During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial 'B' Division, inwhich the Club were runners-up in 1979-80.

In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial 'A' Division runners-up, but ended the season on a highby winning the Gosling Cup.

Industrial 'A' Division runners-up once again in season 1985-86, and defeated finalists in the Gosling Cupof 1988-89 signalled the end of the Club's 17 year association with the Manchester Amateur League withMitchells again looking for a new challenge by joining the Manchester League in 1989.

Mitchells quickly found their feet and gained promotion to the Premier Division at the second attempt, finishing as First Division runners-up in 1991.

A change of management saw Paul Traynor and Kenny Davies take on the first team responsibilities, withGeorge Walker and Ron Parker managing the reserves.

In 1993, Mitchells reached the Gilgryst Cup Final, only to lose out to Woodley Sports in the Final.

1994 saw the formation of a third team which was entered into the Eccles and District League, and in thesame year, Paul Traynor departed due to work commitments and Kenny Davies assumed control, ablyassisted by Billy Hall.

This management team took Mitchells to their highest ever league position in the Premier Division,runners-up to Abbey Hey in 1995.

The Club was rocked prior to the commencement of 1997-98 season when Kenny Davies walked out, taking with him several first team players to local rivals Monton Amateurs.

Dave Rowan and Craig Woodley, who had forged a successful partnership with the reserves, werepromoted and asked to rebuild the side. Roy Bluer, a successful manager in Sunday football, wasrecruited to run the reserves.

By the end of December 1997, the first team were rock bottom of the Premier Division with two points, and were twelve points adrift and facing certain relegation. However, the Club kept faith with itsmanagement team and a run of six wins, three draws and only two defeats saw Mitchells catch the sideabove them. Losses in the next two games saw Mitchells drop into the bottom two, but a dramatic winagainst fellow strugglers Wythenshawe Town and mid-table Monton Amateurs saw the Club stave ofrelegation.

The experience was too close and the team have not been out of the top six since, finishing fifth in1998-99, third in 1999-2000 and fourth in 2000-01.

The start of the 2001-02 season saw the Club change its title to Irlam MS in anticipation of a proposedmove to Irlam, which is still ongoing.

It also saw the departure of Craig Woodley and the formation of a new management team of Rowan, former Willows boss Gary Fellows, and team coach Dave Mann, who have rebuilt the squad andintroduced several young prospects.

League form fell short of early expectations, but the team did put together a good Gilgryst Cup nun toreach the Semi-Finals...

Mitchell Shackleton were proud winners of the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy in 1998-99, atestament to the spirit in which the Club plays the game.

Also, in June 2000, Club Secretary Ian Street was named Secretary of the Year at the Annual GeneralMeeting.

A major change at the Club occurred in 2002 when Mitchells were informed that Salteye Park, theirexisting ground was to be purchased and subsequently be used for what is now to become the newSalford Reds rugby League stadium.

The hunt was on for a new ground, and with compensation from their move, plus football foundationassistance, Silver St in Irlam , once home to Irlam Town became an obvious choice.

The new ground at Silver St was officially opened in 2003 with a visit from Brian Clair’s Milk Cup winning,Manchester United youth team.

Since this time, the Club has been working tirelessly to bring the Club into the North West Counties, thehighest standard that the Club has seen. Manager Gary Fellows left the Club to take up the position ofmanager at Salford City FC, and after a season with manager Arthur Burns, who worked miracles with athreadbare side, including winning the Manchester Challenge Trophy, the mantle passed onto Dave Mannto continue the building of a new side for the following season.

A further name change saw Irlam MS become Irlam FC, and the appointment of Warren Dodd as secretaryof the Club, from Irlam Rangers Junior Club saw development increase at the ground.

The Clubs performances to date have fluctuated in the NWCFL as the Club adjusts to the higher level ofcompetition. Previous managers Dave Mann, Ryan Gilligan and Nick Parker have all poured their effortand commitment into the Club, culminating in the most recent appointment, Steve Nixon, a local managerwith an impeccable coaching CV.

Despite Irlam’s lowest finish to a campaign in its six seasons in the NWCFL a decent finish to the seasonprovides the Club with an optimistic outlook for 2013/2014.

ADMIRAL SHIPMATES

Building Up Nelson's Barmy ArmyGood afternoon everyone. Today I would first like to thank long time supporter Harry Manning forlending me a selection of programmes and documents that I will eventually be making the basis ofa series of 'looking back' features in the programme. If any of our other older supporters (or keenyoung collectors) have any archive programmes or documents that could be of interest then wewould be delighted if you could lend them to us for a bit. Harry, of course, is as keen as ever andwas proudly wearing his new replica kit at the last away game!!

I hope you have all been enjoying the new food choices that have been on offer at Victoria Park thisseason. If there is any item not currently on sale that you would like us to consider then please dolet us know. Once again today both the canteen/bar and the Old Kitchen will be open with a choiceof meals plus of course drinks and snacks in the bar. Nelson FC TV will be back in the bar today aftermissing a week due to some technical issues, apologies for this. Also apologies for the Club Shopnot yet being fully operational, we are still looking for someone to run it on a regular basis. It is nowgoing to be located in the old physios room at the end of the Main Stand near the new AdmiralSuite. If you are interested in taking over this small but important role then please see Dave Edler. Itwould only be a home Matchday requirement as internet orders can be dealt with in house.

On that note a reminder that home and away replica kits are still on sale and can be ordered in allsizes for the bargain price of just 24.99 each. If you order today you will get yours in plenty of timefor the forthcoming FA Carlsberg Vase tie away at Consett where I am sure a lot of you will want towear your colours.

PYRAMID PATTER All The Latest From The Non League Scene

LUTON TOWN continue to struggle and have made yet another stuttering start to their SkrillConference Premier campaign. At the time of writing they lie in 14th place in the league table.'The Hatters' of course were relegated on the back of a 30 points deduction in their finalFootball League season that most people thought was unfair (apart from a few Watford fanslike me who thought it was too lenient!!) and since then despite crowds that have regularlyaveraged 6,000 at their Kenilworth Road home (below) they have been unable to make theleap back. This was expected to be the year that they would finally challenge under theexperienced stewardship of manager John Still but once again so far it is proving to be yetanother false dawn.

In the FA Cup with Budweiser today there are plenty of very attractive looking ties. The tworemaining clubs from our division both have mouth watering home ties. FORMBY are at home

to Evo Stik side NORTHWICH VICTORIA and the Squirrels will be hoping to cause an upset, whilst ATHERTON COLLIERIES are home to another Evo Stik outfit RADCLIFFE BOROUGH whohave started the season pretty poorly and once again the Colls will be hoping to spring asurprise and gain some of the massive prize money on offer from the sponsors.

Meanwhile the two 'big guns' promoted into the Evo Stik League last season have madediffering starts. DARLINGTON 1883 and SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC were both formed by thefans of former Football League clubs that had gone bust and were this season surprisinglykept apart in different geographical divisions. However whislt Darlington, in the NorthDivision, have made a great start and currently lie 2nd in the table, down in the SouthDivision Scarborough have stuggled to find form and currenty lie in mid table. They did, however, pull of a remarkable comeback on Bank Holiday Monday, coming back from 3-0 atLINCOLN UNITED to salvage a point. Darlington are currentl ground sharing at BISHOPAUCKLAND and are pulling in the crowds there (see photo).

MATCH REPORTMATCH REPORT2 1-

Nelson sit proudly at the top of the NWCFL Division 1 aftera 2-1 victory over Cheadle Town at Victoria Park.

Nelson started with just one change from win against1874 Northwich with Nat Taylor preferred to AdamDawson, Danny Finch passed a fitness test and RichieAllen and Peter Wright made their home debuts in attack.

And attack was the order of the 1st half with Nelsoncreating a dozen clear cut opportunities. The first ofwhich came after only 2 minutes when Allen burstthrough from the left, and despite probably being fouledin the area, the big forward got his shot off which waswell saved by Piggott in the Cheadle goal. A minute laterCheadle weren’t so fortunate however, a lethal cornerfrom Boswell headed in at the back post by Josh Barrickfor his 3rd goal in 4 games, not a bad return for a centraldefender.

On 6 minutes the Boswell / Barrick combination nearlybore fruit again, a repeat of the first goal, but this timeBarrick’s header was over the bar.

The first real opportunity for the visitors came on 16minutes, the lively Chris Sherrington’s effort wide of thepost.

Chances followed for Chris Turner, Liam Boswell, PeterWright and two headers from set plays from Danny Finch. But the Cheadle defence stood firm and the visitorslooked dangerous on the counter. On 32 minutes aswitch from right to left nearly brought the visitors level,a Finch clearance bouncing off Ben Woodhead when theywent for the same ball and deflecting wide, the resultingcorner was cleared.

With a minute to go in the half Nelson got reward for thechances they had created, wonderful link-up playbetween Wright and Boswell leaving Wright with the goalat his mercy, and he expertly finished past Piggott to

send Nelson into the break with a two goal advantage.Indeed it could have been 3-0 as a cross from the left justbefore the break was mis-hit by Taylor as he stoodunmarked 5 yards from goal.

The second period began as a tepid affair, the only pointof note a ‘card happy’ referee who had become centrestage with a host of soft decisions and bookings in agame that didn’t have a bad challenge in it.

Nelson had opportunities to wrap things up as the halfwore on, Boswell missing from point blank range on 63minutes, and Wright mistiming an effort when 10 yardsout on 67 minutes. And as the visitors grew into thegame they were handed a lifeline 15 minutes from time,Nelson not closing down a 2nd ball and substitute Dannyjones who lashed a show through a crowd of players andinto the net.

With the goal came a resurgent Cheadle, but despitethem now being the better side it still looked like Nelsonwere the most likely to score, now on the counter.Boswell hitting the post in the closing stages thensomehow hitting a shot wide from 4 yards, with theofficial blowing the whistle a minute later to signal theend to an entertaining game where Nelson were goodvalue for 3 points on clear cut chances created.

The league leaders now travel to champions Formby onWednesday night.
