The fall is a time of change in Western New York. The leaves turn vibrant colors, and there is a distinct energy in the air. It might be the football, but it’s more likely that we all pick up speed as the end of the year rapidly approaches. Everyone at NetPlus Alliance is on the move right now, attending conferences and trade shows, participating in supplier training, and making on-site visits to our members.

One of the most important meetings at this time of year is with the NetPlus Alliance Distributor and Supplier Advisory Councils. For the first time, we will

host both councils at the same time, each with their own separate sessions to give us feedback and discuss ideas for group growth. We conclude the day with joint sessions to brainstorm on common issues and challenges. Shortly after, the NetPlus Team comes together for an off-site meeting to determine how these initiatives talk up to our group goals and work them into our 2015 strategic plan. Do you put together a plan for your business? Now is the time to think about planning, and Paul Byrnes, our Vice President of Distributor Development, provides guidance on how to put together a strategy for 2015 on page 11.

I always anticipate fall with excitement for the annual Women Industrial Supply Executives (W.I.S.E.) retreat and conference. Held every October, W.I.S.E. is an all-female group, comprised of industrial and contractor distributors, suppliers, and service providers affiliated with the Industrial Supply Association (ISA). Women from across the industry come together to attend leadership seminars, network, and learn from each other in open forum discussions. NetPlus Alliance will continue to remain focused on providing you opportunities for continued growth. Take time to plan for success in 2015 and let’s keep it rolling!

As I’m writing this, our Buffalo Bills just made a change at quarterback. E.J. Manuel, who struggled to find

his receivers, is out in favor of journeyman Kyle Orton. (Of course, by the time you read this, there could be even more changes at quarterback.) So, why the change? The obvious answer is that the Buffalo Bills need to win now. The AFC East is wide open, but more importantly, the coach, general manager, and president of the team will get a new owner this month. They definitely need to win now in order to keep their jobs under the new regime.

It’s no different in your business or in ours. We all must change in order to keep growing and to keep winning (i.e., in order to keep being successful and profitable year after year). It does not have to be as drastic as benching a first round draft choice, but it does have to be significant.

For industrial and contractor supplies distributors, this might include:

∙ A significant technology enhancement, such as an e-store, tablet and smart phone apps, or data analytics.

∙ Possible upgrades to warehousing and shipping systems.

∙ Adding major new product categories.

∙ Acquiring a company in an adjacent market or in a new distribution field.

And yes, a commitment to upgrading your personnel in all areas through training and improving hiring practices.

NetPlus Alliance also continues to change and evolve. We are now in our twelfth year, and we are a significantly different operation than we were ten years, or even five years, ago. We have added both distributor and supplier advisory councils, which meet late fall each year. Last March, we had our first Annual Meeting, where we brought our suppliers and distributors together for one-on-one meetings and a variety of social networking events. Additionally, our technology has been significantly upgraded, allowing our suppliers and distributors access to a vibrant portal full of information that makes them a better NetPlus Alliance partner.

For NetPlus distributors, change involves becoming more engaged with your buying group. Become committed to participating in our regional and annual meetings. Grow your business opportunities by selectively adding more NetPlus suppliers to your vendor roster. And use the resources available in your NetPlus portal to generate real change in your company. Become a more involved NetPlus member, and at the end of the season, you will be the winner by being a more profitable enterprise.

If you have any comments or questions about how NetPlus Alliance can help you to change and watch your business grow, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or (716) 438-2014.

We must be creating quite a buzz out there. The number of inquiries from the supplier community to join NetPlus

Alliance has certainly picked up over the past 6 months or so. At this moment, we have 46 potential new supplier leads. Of course, not all will develop into a partnership program, but stay tuned for some more new suppliers to be announced later this year.

Here’s a quick review of what’s new at NetPlus Alliance since July 1st.

Diamond Products Ltd is one of several new supplier partners that launched their program on July 1st. They are a US manufacturer of diamond tools. What’s unique about Diamond Products is they are a single source for the concrete saws and drill rigs that power the bits and blades. Look for the CORE CUT brand. Also available is the full line-up of Tyrolit Abrasives for industrial and construction applications. Visit www.diamondproducts.com for more details.

Knipex Tools is the US Sales and Marketing Organization of Knipex, Germany, a premium quality manufacturer of pliers, cutters, nippers, and wire strippers. They are based in Arlington Heights, IL. Did you know the proper pronunciation is actually “kuh-nip-ex”? Check out their broad offering of products, including numerous specialty tools at knipex-tools.com.

Komelon is the world’s most vertically integrated tape measure manufacturer. What does that mean? It means that since 1963 they continue to do it all from raw material manufacturing to marketing and distribution to their network of authorized resellers. Since 1997, Komelon USA has operated their marketing and distribution center in Waukesha, WI. Komelon USA also provides private label tape measures for customers across North America. Check out www.komelonusa.com for more information.

Are you looking for a source that offers a complete line of hydraulic lifting tools? Eagle Pro Industrial Tools is a competitive, professional manufacturer of hydraulic tools for industrial applications. From cylinders, pumps, jacks, nut splitters, and other accessories, Eagle Pro is the source. Go to www.eagleprotools.com for more details.

We kicked off a program with International Enviroguard in August. When it comes to protective clothing, they offer the full spectrum of products. With selections of materials for controlled environments, chemical protection, and general protection, they have about every type of coverall you could need. They also offer surface protection products, foot protection, cooling products, and FR (flame retardant) coveralls. Check out their website www.int-enviroguard.com for product details and to request samples.

Sunex Tools has been in business for over 35 years, manufacturing innovative tools for the automotive aftermarket, commercial, and industrial segments. They offer a complete line of impact sockets, air tools, hand tools, service carts, creepers, hydraulic jacks, and USA made hydraulic presses. Their program allows low minimum orders and extremely competitive pricing to compete with the private label brands everyone sees in the market today. Check out www.sunextools.com for more information.

Have you ever thought of selling sunscreen or insect repellant? If not, now you should! Croc Bloc from Degil Safety Products is an industry leader in skin care. Many of your current customers provide sunscreens and insect repellants for their employees. Anyone working outside, like construction companies, utilities, and railroads, all use large amounts of this stuff. There are very few manufacturers focused on serving the industrial worker and selling through industrial distribution. Croc Bloc should be the brand to sell!

Maxxeon is the world’s most innovative LED work light company. These are not flashlights; they are area work lights that are functional, portable, incredibly bright, and durable. Maintenance engineers and technicians will love the small yet powerful lights that will make their jobs easier. Go to www.maxxeon.com for more information.

And finally, you see it here first! Launching a program effective November 1st is Snap Vending LLC. Snap Vending offers an affordable vending and inventory management solution for our distributors that will allow them to compete with the nationals. Snap Vending and the VendNovation software system provides an easy to implement system with the support and training needed to be successful. Check out their website at snapvend.com. There are links to software functionality demonstrations and introductory training for new customers.

If you have any questions about any of these suppliers, or if you have any suggestions for potential new suppliers, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Proto® Industrial Tools are among the safest available, thanks to innovative designs, high-quality materials and precision manufacturing. However, even the best tools require regular inspection, maintenance, and proper use, which is why a growing number of companies are turning to Proto’s Safety Obsessed Training Program to promote workplace safety.

Safety is not just one facet of the Proto Industrial Tools philosophy - It’s the thread that runs through every socket we design, every

wrench that we manufacture and each hammer on which our name appears.

We are Safety Obsessed and proud of it!

We’d like to show you how to ramp up core safety practices, protect your workers from danger, and preserve your bottom line with our Safety Obsessed Training Program.

With a keen focus on hand tool safety awareness, the program conveys the critical importance of proven safety techniques, as well as ways for workers to protect themselves on the job. The program includes an onsite seminar and accompanying DVD – available in English, Spanish and French – that presents the latest information on safe and responsible tool use for professionals who handle industrial tools. The program helps users identify when tools become worn or damaged and need to be replaced, as well as identifying specific tools and procedures that can improve worksite safety. The program can be customized to focus on the specific safety concerns of each facility. Each program segment provides a refresher on the proper use of hand tools and general tool knowledge for that product category. The objective is to raise safety awareness and empower workers to identify potentially hazardous situations, offer safe alternatives, and minimize the chance of injuries.

I have had the great pleasure of getting to know and work with hundreds of distributors

over the past three decades. While each company individually defines success, some are more consistent at achieving their goals regardless of outside influence or economic climate. Simply put, I have found that those with a plan reach their goals and outperform the market more often than those without a plan.

Many good businesses avoid planning simply because they aren’t sure how to start the process or the thought of it feels like too large a task. For the sake of reading this article, I ask you to set aside any struggles you may have about business planning and consider the rewards. A plan can be as simple as you want it to be and more rewarding than you might think. To get in the correct mindset, think about doing anything in your life without a plan and what the results are. Imagine driving to the office, running your day, or taking a vacation without a plan. The plan helps you achieve your goal of getting to your destination on time, being productive, and vacationing as you want, either partaking in many activities or simply relaxing, but it is the plan that helps you reach your goal.

A business plan typically starts with an objective or goal that comes from analyzing your business. The goal might be to increase your market share, expand into new product categories or verticals, operate more efficiently, or increase sales and profit. All achievable goals are most likely reached earlier with a plan.

To start your plan, analyze your business by asking yourself a few questions:

∙ What keeps you up at night?

∙ What business difficulties would you erase if you could?

∙ What are your customers asking for?

∙ Can I create more profit from what is already being done?

∙ Are you delivering profit at the “Typical ISA distributor” or “High Profit ISA distributor” level?

∙ If you wanted to sell your business, what would need to be done to make it sellable?

Once you have identified your goal, develop the strategy, actions, and tactics necessary to reach that goal and share them, along with your goal, with your team. They will feel part of the plan and understand what it means for the business and how it benefits them, making it much more likely that they will work with you to achieve the goal. Build review dates into the plan and make adjustments as required. Then, enjoy the journey and results. Again, you can make this as simple or detailed as you like. It is better to make a very simple plan than to not make one at all, so create a plan that fits your personality best.

Including NetPlus suppliers as part of your plan will deliver multiple rewards with the front-end values, base rebate, and growth rebate opportunities. Review the NetPlus supplier list, targeting a new category to expand into, a new supplier to add to your portfolio, an existing supplier you can plan to grow with, or convert a non-NetPlus supplier to a NetPlus supplier and reach those goals with compounded results.

The fourth quarter of each year is an ideal time to build your plan for the following year. I’ve added a few helpful documents to the NetPlus Community Portal to help you get started, or pull out a piece of paper and answer the questions above. This is one of those chances to work on your business rather than in your business. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions about this article or the documents in the NetPlus Community Portal.

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together!

NuTrend Disposables is an industry leading manufacturer and supplier of DISPOSABLE WIPERS, SAFETY PRODUCTS, and WASHROOM ESSENTIALS. We strive daily to achieve excellence in product and service through a “customer-specific” approach: Flexible, Forward-Thinking and Strategic.

Though NuTrend is a new name in the industry, we are part of a company that dates back to the early 1900s. The NuTrend team has a combined 124 years of experience in our product categories.

What Sets NuTrend Apart? In additional to our passion for this industry, NuTrend offers 3 KEY ESSENTIALS to our distributor customers.

1. Unique Bundle of Products Available Directly from the Manufacturer / Processor a. Wiping Cloths (Paper/Nonwovens & Rags)b. Safety Products (Sorbents & Disposable Gloves)c. Washroom Essentials (Air Care, Disposable Toilet Seat Covers & Feminine Hygiene)

Typically to purchase these items, a distributor would have to source from three to six different manufacturers and/or a re-distributor.

With NuTrend’s offering, the distributor can bundle all these items together to achieve low prepaid freight requirements and reduction in transaction costs related to fewer PO’s and ease of dealing with a single supplier

2. Customization of Product and Servicea. Most of our product lines are available in three packaging configurations: NuTrend branded, Distributor

Private Label or Generic Packaging. Private labeled wipers, as an example, require only one pallet per SKU for your company’s label on the boxes AND that is at no extra charge to the distributor.

3. Sales Toolsa. There are greater demands on the distributor salesperson’s time and knowledge than ever before in the his-

tory of our industry. As a result, NuTrend has developed a solution: “Apps” (Apple and Android) to guide your salesperson through the best product solution for your customers’ applications.

b. Apps in our wiping cloth category (to be expanded to other categories): 1. Competitive Cross Reference2. Wiper Selector

Try out our wiper selector app by CLICKING ON THIS LINK or by going to http://nutrenddisposables.com/AppDemo.

NuTrend is dedicated to providing our customers with these three key ingredients to ensure our distributors’ success in selling this unique bundle of products. Your salespeople, if not already selling our categories, walk by these products every single day when visiting your customers. You have the relationships; now your salespeople can easily add these products on to your customers’ existing orders, further increasing your value to that customer.
