Simon Says When my children were young, I would really look forward to Advent. Perhaps it is the fact that we gather round an Advent Candle at meal times and Jessie and Peter daily open the doors on their Advent Calendar. In church we open the window slowly on the unfolding story of God’s purpose and plan for our lives. This year this will be happening in a really poignant way. Many churches and pulpits proclaim peace and goodwill, our world seems to be headed in the opposite direction. The threat of possible terror attack, concern about the continuing conflict in Myanmar, in Iraq and Syria, and other fears of living in the modern world, all of these conjure feelings of uncertainty which mature and can leave a legacy of distress and depression. Yet Advent provides us with another focus, a time for thinking about the coming of Christ. True, we mostly think about it in preparation for Christmas, good food, candles and carols. As we view our world today, we may understand something of what Alfred Delp, a pastor in the German Resistance, condemned to death by Adolf Hitler, meant when he spoke of ‘an uncertain fate ahead.’ He also wrote ‘Light your candles quietly, such candles as you possess, wherever you are’; the hope that is a central Advent theme. Be prepared and be prepared to be ‘light‘ in this world. Towering above the conflicts of our age is the message of hope that ‘Advent’ brings. At the time of his first arrival on earth an angelic chorus heralded the birth of Jesus. “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and goodwill to all men.” It is easy to forget in the busyness of Christmas preparation, just how stark that first Christmas was; cold, dank stable; the experience of rejection; the apparent ordinariness of it all. Yet the birth of the babe in Bethlehem was the culmination of a dream hundreds of years old. Prophets and other wise folk had longed for this day, for it was to mark the beginning of God’s kingdom coming on earth. Heaven’s desire, for our world, is that our attention be so fixed on giving glory to God that human conflicts will be turned into peace and goodwill

for all humanity. This isn’t ‘pie in the sky’ talk. It is heaven’s prayer for our world and is achievable in every life. It starts with the decision to share happiness with a neighbour, whether they deserve it or not. It is amazing how an acorn or kindness can mature into an oak tree of friendship. Advent is about anticipation still. It is about working for the fulfilment of dreams, believing that one day Christ will arrive in our midst again. That remains the dream of the New Testament writers, and it should be something of our dream too. “To love people, to be indispensable somewhere, that is the purpose of life. That is the secret of happiness.” So how will you spend this Advent time? There are many who are trapped in spaces ‘three paces this way, and three paces that way’ with hands tied. Many of course are political prisoners, refugees, asylum seekers, the hungry, the poor and those whom no one seems to need. Some such folk live around us. There are others who are nearer us, trapped in spaces because of fear, depression, isolation, or who are discriminated against because they are different in some way or another from us. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, another German pastor who suffered under Adolf Hitler, once observed that Advent was ‘frightening news for everyone who has a conscience.’ I think what he meant was that God’s love is like a fire that burns brightly to light up dark corners, and consume all that destroys or hurts human beings, and prevents them from living fully human lives. So listen to our preaching this Advent, look at the ‘Advent Daily Thought’; we are hoping to develop themes of hope during the season.

God’s Surprise

Who would think that what was needed to transform and save the earth Might not be a plan or army, proud in purpose, proved in worth?

Who would think despite derision, that a child should lead the way? God surprises earth with heaven, coming here on Christmas Day

Shepherds watch and wise men wonder, monarchs scorn and angels sing;

Such a place as none would reckon, hosts a holy helpless thing; Stable beasts and by-passed strangers, watch a baby laid in hay; God surprises earth with heaven, coming here on Christmas Day

Centuries of skill and sciences, span the past from which we move Yet experience questions whether with such progress we improve. While the human lot we ponder, lest our hopes and humour fray God surprises earth with heaven, coming here on Christmas Day

(Tune: Scarlet Ribbons: lona Community)

St Peter’s Advent Calendar From the 1st December St Peter’s Church will be displaying a unique Advent Calendar. Each day a door will be opened and there will be 25 doors to discover dotted around the church. Each door will reveal a piece of artwork reflecting the part of the Christmas story which is retold bit-by-bit throughout Advent. On Christmas day there will be a full sized door to

be opened beneath the pulpit. The aim is to have a simple nativity scene with small photographs of the congregation and other visitors to HPC reflecting all of us are involved in the incarnation of Jesus. Further, there will be a resource available to go alongside the telling of the Christmas story. A daily reflection will be printed and available in church and posted online.

Twelve things you cannot do at Christmas (The Weekly News 22 Dec 1992)

1. You shouldn’t ride or drive to church

on Christmas Day. If you do, you risk breaking an unrepealed law of 1551 which clearly states that you must walk to and from church on December 25. It was introduced by Edward VI, who also added that everybody HAS to go to church on Christmas Day or go to jail.

2. By rights, if you risk driving to church in your car or horse buggy or even by bike, then be careful where you park. Under George III act of 1780, the police can confiscate and sell ‘any vehicle parked close or outside a church, the money being distributed among the poor and needy’.

3. You can’t go carol singing round the houses collecting money for charity, unless you have the express permission of your local chief constable. A 1939 law says that you could be fined £400 or sent to prison for six months if you do.

4. You can’t kiss anyone you like under the mistletoe. The ancient custom holds no water in legality. In a court a few years ago, a young woman party-goer told how she was kissed under the mistletoe against her wishes. She won the case. Office Romeos please note!

5. You shouldn’t have more than three courses if you’re eating your Christmas meal at a hotel or restaurant. It’s something that William IV decided back in the Peoples Charter of 1863, and nobody has bothered to change it.

6. You can’t take part in any sports other than archery, leaping and vaulting on Christmas Day, according to the Unlawful Games Act passed by Henry VIII in 1541.

7. Neither can you go shooting on Christmas Day because the only use allowed for a gun on December 25 is to defend the country or defend yourself. That’s clearly ruled under a 1831 Act of William IV which states that ‘no person whatsoever shall kill or take any game or use any dog, gun, net or other

engine or instrument for the purpose of killing or taking any game on Christmas Day’.

8. If, as an employee of a company, you are ordered to refuse Christmas gifts other than perhaps calendars or diaries, then you are duty bound to do so under the Prevention of Bribery and Corruption Act. Not long ago a tobacconist who gave a £5 present to an office clerk (who always bought his firm’s cigars for his gifts to clients) was prosecuted and fined.

9. You can’t make mince pies on Christmas Day thanks to a law introduced by Henry VIII in 1536, which says that nobody shall be ’concerned with their preparation’.

10. Indeed you might also be in trouble from an over-zealous and knowledgeable officer of the law if you ate a Christmas pudding with the Christmas meal. The same Henry VIII Act described them as ‘abominable and idolatrous things to be avoided at Christmas’.

11. You can’t work on Christmas Day, even if it’s an essential service you’re doing. In 1677, Charles II decreed that it is illegal for ‘any person whatsoever to do or exercise any worldly labour on December 25’.

12. If you are a store owner, you can’t advertise a Father Christmas without making it clear that women as well as men can apply. But if you only want men to apply, then you must certify that Father Christmas is a ‘genuine occupational qualification’ which would allow you to specify the applicant’s sex under the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act.

On Friday 3rd of November the church held a Requiem Mass to say farewell to our very much loved family member of St Peter’s, Vivien Gill. And as everyone who knew her would have predicted the service was organised by Vivien herself, even the refreshments at the end of the service. It was a beautiful service with all our clergy taking part and we all felt that Vivien would have loved it. The picture shows Vivien after being presented with the Maundy money by the queen in 2005. Rest in peace Vivien.

St Peter’s Building Work and Grant Applications The Building Group thought it would be a good idea to bring you up to date with where we are with our grant applications which support the building work we plan to do next year. The main grant is from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). We have spent our initial Development grant (just over £12000) on surveys of the tower, stonework and glazing which has enabled our architect to draw up a Specification of Works that has been sent to various companies to tender for this work. We are working towards a mid-December deadline for the HLF 2nd round application which will support the so-called Delivery Phase. The Delivery Phase will cover some minor repair work to the Tower, Stonework repairs on the South wall and West entrance and repairs to the glazing around the Baptistry and on the South wall. We are also trying to attract matched funding to the tune of £30000. We have applied for funds from the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust, the Wolfson Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation. We plan to apply to the National Churches Trust when the tender figures are returned. To support the alterations at the back of church, which are being developed in parallel, we have applied for grants from the Diocesan Bishop’s Fund and Allchurches Trust Limited. The good news is that the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust have granted us £5000 following a site visit at the end of October. The YHCT are very keen for grant recipients to become Friends of the organisation. The cost of becoming a “Friend” is £25 for an individual member or £30 for two people at the same address. I would like to ask you to consider this step if possible. Details can be obtained from me or from the organisation’s website. We are hoping to hear over the next months whether we have been successful in being awarded other grant amounts. We also need to fundraise ourselves so please support St. Peter’s social events over the next year as we move into some exciting times. Prayers and fingers crossed for our bids would also be useful. Watch this space, we will keep you all informed as to how things are progressing. Mike Bembridge, Churchwarden.

Fund Raising St Peter’s has had a very successful year of fundraising: the money raised by sponsored races has enabled the pew runners to be ordered to furnish the pews, the choir stalls, the Lady Chapel pews and kneelers for the High Altar and Lady Chapel Altar. The coffee mornings have been very successful; our social events, especially the beer festival have all brought money into the church and we have had another very rewarding pop-up shop event. Once again, the week captured everyone’s attention with many of our congregation acting as salespeople. Others joined in as drop in visitors; others fetched and carried and others donated items to sell. The shop was absolutely full from the beginning and additional stock was brought over during the week, which meant that all week there were items of interest for our customers. Can I say a massive “Thank You” to all those who were involved in any way in the week. The final total of money raised was around £2500. This included over £110 of gift-aid money reclaimed added into the total. Over the four years we have run the pop-up shop we have raised £8107 in total, a fantastic effort all round. We have already provisionally booked the shop for 2018! The mission work and numerous conversations during the week have been the most striking. There have been all kinds of positive aspects to this work and the church has very much impressed people with its enthusiasm, positive attitude and community spirit. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and we do seem to have started a trend with other churches copying our pop-up shop idea. Overall, the result of our work has been fantastic. We have raised a huge amount of money for the church at a time when it is really needed, we have raised our profile in Huddersfield and last but not least we have been able to continue our very important mission role in the town centre. Give yourselves a huge pat on the back! Mike & Jane Bembridge

Beggars in Church We want to help people, and of course Jesus told us to give to people who ask. But please be aware that: Many of the people who appear to sleep rough and ask for money are not. If someone is a genuine rough-sleeper and we give them money, we can simply help them to stay on the streets. Many people who ask for money have problems with alcohol, other substances or with gambling. Giving them money is adding to temptation. At Huddersfield Parish Church we want to help people in the best possible way. As a church we give money to the Huddersfield Mission

and to the Welcome Centre, who support people, helping them out of the cycle of poverty. We direct people and sometimes take them there to get help. But it is our policy not to give money directly to people, as this does more harm than good. It can be very difficult to say no when we are asked for money. It can also be difficult if others see us saying no: it looks heartless, and we may be criticised. But, if we really want to help people, then we need to say no to giving money, and instead offer to give help in other ways.

Pew Runners. Having raised the estimated cost of replacing our very old pew runners by the runners and walkers throughout the year, we are now going ahead with the project. By a majority vote, the PCC have selected the colour for the pew runners as gold. The colour chosen for the carpet is a dark red. We are now negotiating with the supplier to have the runners made. Each pew will have three lengths and each length will be reversible and the covers washable. The old carpet type runners will go up into the balcony being slightly better than the bare wooden seats.

Street Angels Huddersfield Christians offering a caring, listening and helping presence to anyone in need

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I am writing on behalf of Street Angels Huddersfield to ask for your support. We are part of the Churches Together initiative and volunteer on a Saturday night in Huddersfield town centre. Our aim is to show the love of God by providing practical help and support to the people who are working in and accessing the night time economy. This support might include: spending time talking with people liaising with door staff at the various venues offering directions and local information providing a friendly face for Huddersfield’s rough

sleepers helping people to taxis administering First Aid giving out bottles of water collecting discarded glass bottles providing another set of eyes and ears for the Police and

liaising with the town’s CCTV operators giving slippers to ladies who have discarded their

uncomfortable heels and may be in danger of standing in something unpleasant

brightening up the town centre with our high vis jackets.

We have just celebrated our 10th anniversary and during those years we have established a very positive relationship with the Police and various venues within the town centre. We have a wonderful rapport with the young people who are out enjoying themselves. They will often stop to chat with us, to thank us for what we do and even to talk about how they or their friends have been helped by Street Angels. For example, we recently met a young woman who we had helped to a taxi on a previous night out and she was delighted to tell her friend all about her adventures and the part we had played in getting her home safely. We hope you agree that this is just the kind of practical help that Christians should be offering to our communities. There are lots of ways in which you could help us. At the moment we are struggling to get teams of Angels out each week and we would really like to recruit more volunteers. We try to commit to one Saturday night per month and anyone who might be interested could come along as an Observer to see exactly what is involved. We would be very happy to come and talk with the congregation, PCC or anyone who is interested in our work. Finally, whilst we have received some grants in the past we raise the majority of our own funds and so any financial contributions would be gratefully received and used to continue our work. You can also read about us on the Huddersfield Examiner website http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/bishops-praise-hardworking-street-angels-12473166 and you can find us on Facebook. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Ian Atkinson, Chair, Street Angels Huddersfield Email: [email protected] Mobile: 07821759802
