DrWaldmanhasbeenaConsultantNeuroradiologistatImperialCollegeHealthcareNHSTrust(formerlyHHNT)since2001.Since2006hehasbeendepartmentalacademicleadasResearchDirectorforRadiology,andhasalsofoundedanacademictrainingprogrammeinclinicalradiology.
Hewasawardedthe2009RoyalCollegeofRadiologistsRoentgenProfessorshipandmedal,andholdshonorarysenioracademicappointmentsatImperialCollegeLondon.Hismainresearchinterestsareinquantitativeandphysiologicalneuroimaging,particularlyasappliedtoneuro-oncologyandneurodegenerativedementiasandneuroinflammatorydisease.

Intracerebralhaemorrhagesareacommonoccurrenceinadults.Differentiatingbetweenthevarioustypesandaetiologiescanbechallenging.Wewillevaluatetypicalpatternsandcharacteristicimagingfeaturesofhaemorrhagesandlookatwhatcanhelptodifferentiatethem.Wewillalsolookatpossiblemimicsandconsiderwhentomentiontheminreports.Theinformationwillbeintheformofdidacticandcasepresentation.

Infectiousdiseasesofthebraincontinuetoposeconsiderablediagnosticchallengesdespiteadvancesinneuroimaging.Althoughtherearewellestablishedimagingpatternsofthebroadcategoriesofinfectiousdisease,thereissignificantoverlapbothwithintheinfectiousdiseaseentitiesandbetweentheseandotherCNSpathologies,namelymalignancy,posingdiagnosticuncertaintyforradiologists.Globalisationandtheincreasingnumberofpatientsonimmunosuppressivetherapyaddstothecomplexityasweencounterinfectionsfromfurtherafieldandpatientswithalteredhostresponsesthatexperienceagreaterfrequencyofinfectionsandwhonolongerexpressanexpectednormalpatternofinjury.
Thistalk,togetherwiththeinteractivesessionandworkshop,aimstounravelsomeofthesediagnosticconundrums,topromptthereportingradiologisttoconsiderinfectionintheirdifferentialdiagnosisandtoprovideaframeworkforthegeneralapproachtoCNSinfections.

DifferentiatingbetweenmultifocalwhitematterlesionsintheCNScanbedifficult.WewillevaluatetypicalpatternsofwhitematterlesionsinthecommonCNSinflammatorypathologiesandlookatwhatcanhelptodifferentiatethemfromsmallvessel(microangiopathic)processes.WewilllookatMSmimicsandconsiderwhentomentiontheminreports.Wewillconsiderthedifferentcausesoflongsegmentmyelitis.Theinformationwillbepresentedinashortdidacticlecture,interactivebestanswerresponsequestionsandinaworkshop.

Theroleofimagingintheinvestigationofdementiaandotherneurodegenerativedisorderswillbediscussed,includingkeyimagingfeaturesofcommondementiasandextrapyramidaldisorders.Appropriateimagingmodalitiesandprotocolswillbedescribedindifferentclinicalscenarios.Lecturematerialwillbesupplementedbytheassociatedworkshopandinteractivesession.

Epilepsyisacommonneurologicalcondition.Whilstspecificseizuretypes,specificsemiologyandspecialisedMRprotocolincreasestheprobabilityofidentifyingtheepileptogeniclesion,themajorityofthetimeMRimagingwillbebegative.
ThisshortlectureaimstodemonstrateastructuredapproachtoMRimaging,giveguidancetopaediatricandadultprotocols,reviewtheimagingfeaturesofepileptogeniclesionsandprovidebackgroundknowledgealongwithkeydifferentialdiagnoses.
