1. Key informant interviews. SEI will schedule and conduct key informant interviews by telephone to gather insight on the nature of food insecurity within their community as well as recommendations for solutions.

Content experts related to food and nutrition that have critical information that should inform the planning process. May include some if not all Steering Committee members.

Up to 20 interviews can take place at 30 minutes per interview. Target timing is May 23-31.

2. Surveys. Surveys would be developed and issued electronically and via hardcopy through food providers and social service agencies that provide direct food services (i.e. soup kitchens such as St. Vincent’s, food banks, food pantries, etc.).

Issue surveys throughout Nevada in hard copy and electronically between May 23-June 15.

Posted on Facebook Pages for Three Square and FBNN

Distributed to Steering Committee members. Sent electronically to service providers who participate in the Northern Nevada and Rural Nevada Continuum of Care

As an incentive to complete the survey, $20 gift cards to a local grocery store will be distributed at select sites where surveys are administered (allowance of 25 in Clark County, 15 in Washoe County, and 10 in the Balance of State). Included in the survey would be the option for individuals or families to provide contact information for details to participate in a focus group.

Questions will be approved by the strategic planning Steering Committee to capture critical issues related to food insecurity and “what works” to address these issues

3. Focus Groups. The purpose of the focus groups is to further gather community perspectives and recommendations regarding priorities and strategies relevant to their geographic area.

English and Spanish speaking Individuals and Families who are food insecure in Nevada

Focus groups with providers can be conducted during Phase 2

Up to 10 90 minute focus groups throughout the state with allowance to take place in Carson City, Elko, Las Vegas, Reno, Tonopah and Winnemucca.

Option to volunteer on consumer survey and public service announcements (PSAs) over the radio and through social networking (such as Twitter and Facebook) would be utilized to encourage individuals and families facing food insecurity and other stakeholders to attend.

Flyers regarding the focus group would also be distributed to food service providers and social service agencies to further promote focus group attendance

Participants will be asked to RSVP. As an incentive to attend, $20 gift cards to a local grocery store will be distributed for each focus group site.

Outreach Summary

• 50 participants, representing the public and private sector all across Nevada took part in workgroups to develop this plan.

• 17 national, state and local leaders from a variety of industries participated in key informant interviews.

• 90 Nevada residents from 6 counties provided input in 10 focus groups.

• 1,673 Nevada residents, representing 14 of Nevada’s 17 counties provided input via surveys.

• 81 providers of emergency food and resources across Nevada completed surveys.

A Food Security Steering Committee was created to oversee the strategic planning process. In addition, four workgroups were

created to address specific core areas of food security in Nevada.

The four workgroups: Grow Nevada, Feed Nevada, Lead Nevada, and Reach Nevada.

LeadGoal 1 Establish the systems and positions necessary to implement a permanent, sustainable, accountable state leadership structure for food security to increase all Nevadan’s understanding, value and support of food security solutions. Goal 2 Promote a policy agenda to increase food security in Nevada.

FeedGoal 1 Maximize participation in each federal nutrition program available to the state.Goal 2 Establish and integrate an actual or virtual “one-stop-shop” system to increase access to food and other services for food insecure Nevadans.

ReachGoal 1 Change the current models of purchase (commodities) and distribution of nutritious foods to increase economies of scale, and link frequency of deliveries, and availability of local food to the specific needs of communities throughout the state (rural, urban, and food deserts).Goal 2 Develop the technology to connect and share data among multiple state agencies, regional food banks, community agencies, and faith-based organizations for efficient and effective targeting of services and populations.

Food Security Survey Results

• Encourage donations and incentivize businesses to provide food using (also reducing waste). Many

identified the importance of reducing waste (the throwing away of food by businesses) and enhancing what is available for people to eat. More support from the private sector (e.g. business, or individuals) was identified as a potential

solution.
