COLIN COWHERD The Herd will talk abouteverything from politics
to sports culture to even his
love for strippers. He is un-apologetically honest with his
audience and is never afraidto speak candidly about other
members of the media andabout his personal encounterswith athletes. Despite it being
a sports show, Cowherd hasone of the smartest shows in
radio, and has an uncanny abil-ity to relate a simple game torace, love and entertainment.

THE WEEKLY DEBATE
Here are the knocks against Simmons: he lacks the killerinstinct required to be a superstar in the NBA and he can’tshoot, which is essential in today’s NBA. Here’s my rebuttal:Simmons is playing for a horrible LSU team with no chanceof doing anything in the tournament, and that is the reasonhe’s disengaged. Isn’t Lebron James constantly accusedof being passive-aggressive and detached from his team? And for the shooting critcisms, Kawhi Leonard also couldn’tshoot before he came into the NBA and has developed intoa 3-pointer sniper. Simmons has things you can’t teach:
length, passing instincts and rebounding. Future all-star.
I’d take LSU star Ben Simmons. I don’t care aboutthe recent criticism about his GPA, his shootingability or how he didn’t get LSU into the NCAAtournament. About the grades, if I was about toget paid $10 million I wouldn’t study either. Aboutthe shooting, that’s not part of his direct skill set. He’s a long forward who runs the floor and gets histeammates involved. Magic Johnson wasn’t a greatshooter either. And about the tournament, he wasa stud surrounded by scrubs. Basketball is a team
game. Not taking Simmons would be a huge mistake.

WHO WOULD YOU TAKE AS THE FIRST PICK IN THE NBA DRAFT?
Sports Radio
Personalities
WEEKLY TOP 5
1
BILL SIMMONS Simmons is much morethan just a radio host
(though he hosts podcasts),proven by his former websiteGrantland.com, and his current
sports and culture-centeredwebsite TheRinger.com. Sim-
mons, although educated andfor the most part objective, isadmittedly an enormous Bos-
ton sports fan. He speaks fromthe voice of a fan, which makes
him relatable for the averagesports enthusiast. Simmons
loves to bring on really smartguests to talk about movies, politics and even wrestling.
2
DAN PATRICK
The Dan Patrick Showis not so much a radio
show as much as six guys talk-
ing about what interests themin the world of sports. It’s
irreverent, spontaneous andmost importantly casual (the
studio is decorated with swim-suit models and a basketballcourt). Although relatable,
Patrick is obviously intelligent, and has a unique perspective
on hot-button sports issues. He is never afraid to talk
about sensitive issues and hisfavorite pastime is bashing hisformer employer, ESPN.
ZACH LOWELowe is the least-knownmember of this list,
but connections in the NBAmake him a fantastic listenfor pro-basketball fans. Lowe
is a longtime writer for ESPNand the guy knows everybody
in the league, makinghim a fountain of insider
information, which he loves tospew regularly. On “The LowePost,” Lowe analyzes the NBA
through a very detailed lens, discussing things like synergy
of the Houston Rockets, theorganizational dysfunction ofthe Sacramento Kings and the
Detroit Piston’s pick-and-rolloffense.
4
DOUG GOTTLIEBBy far the youngestperson on this list,
Gottlieb currently hosts “The
Doug Gottlieb Show” on CBSand focuses primarily on collegebasketball. Gottlieb was a star
point guard for Oklahoma Stateand led the country in assists
in 1999. Gottlieb’s style is high-energy, well-spoken honesty,
which occasionally gets himin trouble. Although CBS isn’tknown for its radio prowess,
Gottlieb’s show provides asmart, conversational outlet.

THIS WEEK’S GAME
MOUNTAIN WEST STANDINGS
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
BASEBALLThe reigning Mountain West
champion Nevada Wolf Pack has
struggled in the first month of the2016 season, entering play againstUNLV with a 7-12 overall recordand just one conference win.Maybe when the season endswe’ll look back at last weekend’sseries against UNLV as the team’sturning point, as the Pack sweptUNLV in the three-game series, including two come-from-behind-victories.
In the first game on Thursday,Nevada overcame a five-rundeficit for a 7-5 win. On Friday, the Pack grinded out a 6-5 win inextra innings. And on Saturday,Nevada trailed by two runs beforescoring four runs in the seventhand two in the eighth to pull off a7-4 victory over the team’s rival.
On Saturday, Bryce Greager
led the Pack, going 2-5 withtwo RBIs and one run. Two-wayplayer Trenton Brooks pitchedsix innings, allowing seven hits, three walks and two earned runs.Nevada’s next game is on Tuesdayagainst UC Davis at 2:30 p.m.
SOFTBALL Nevada completed a sweep
against Boise State last weekendin the first conference series of theyear. The third game of the series, which took place at Nevada’sChristina Hixson Softball Park, was won by a final score of 5-2 infront of 225 fans.
The Wolf Pack was led byfreshman Brooke Bolinger, who tossed a complete game
and notched a career-high 10strikeouts to improve her 10-2record on the season. Bolingerretired the first six batters viastrikeout before Boise State tiedthe game at one in the fourthinning.
Nevada responded by scoringthree runs in the home half of thefourth, two of which were drivenin by Raquel Martinez. That wasall the offense Bolinger needed,as she shut out the Broncos in thefifth and sixth innings. Nevadaimproved to 22-5 and 3-0 in theMountain West.
GOLFNevada earned a 13th-place
finish at The Goodwin in Stanford,California on Saturday. The fieldconsisted of 26 teams, with threeother Mountain West teams inColorado State, Fresno State andSan Jose State. UC Davis earnedthe championship with a score of13 under par, a whopping 10 shotsbetter than the runner-up.
“The course played toughtoday,” said Nevada coach JacobWilner. “The winds were up andthe greens were firm. We had agood tournament beating severalgood teams.”
Freshman Travis Fredborghad the strongest tournamentfor Nevada, with a score of 215,including two eagles on Sunday.
Nevada has its last tournamentof the season before the MountainWest championship, when it
travels to El Macero, CaliforniaApril 15 through 17.
