Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Is there anyone to whom this doesn't apply? Don't we all have to
labor at something, whether it be work, school, relationships, household affairs, or personal, emotional, or mental battles?
Aren't we all burdened in some way at some time? Jesus offers us powerful words of consolation in today's Gospel. He promises us rest. He calls all of us to himself, along with the baggage and burdens that we carry, and assures us that we will find relief. Thank God! What a
gift for our tired, weary souls. The strange part about the passage, however, is when Jesus suggests that in order to find this wonderful
rest, we have to take a "yoke" upon our shoulders. This of course is a reference to the animal harness of old that would join two oxen
together to share the weight of the load they carried. He tells us, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me... For my yoke is easy, and my
burden light." Somehow, joining Jesus in his work is supposed to bring us rest! Contrary to the standard belief that not working is the source of relief, Jesus urges us to join him in his mission in order to find peace. But what is this mission? To be "meek and humble of
heart." Jesus' work is to do whatever God the Father wants him to do. As he says elsewhere, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent
me and to finish his work" (Jn 4:34). So, it seems that if we also humbly submit to doing God's work-with Jesus right alongside us as
our partner in the task-we will "find rest" for ourselves. So as we labor through the trials of the day, may we bear this in mind, and pray that
we may handle them according to the will of God.

GIVE YOUR BURDEN TO THE LORD
“Remember, the burden of sorrow is doubled when it is borne alone.” ~ Goran Persson
In today’s gospel, we heard Jesus tell the people, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt 11:28) Jesus, being truly human, knew all the truths about our humanity.
One of those truths is that we do not bear burdens well when we are forced to bear them on our own. If, on the other hand, someone helps us bear a burden, that which was thought to be impossible can become light and tolerable. The “burden” may be the same; however, having someone to help makes all the difference in the world.
We are doing ourselves an incredible injustice nowadays. It seems that there is a belief that we must face things on our own and do things on our own. If we ask others for help, we often hear, that is an admission of weakness. Not wanting to appear weak, many try to face, lift, or carry their burdens alone. When they do so, they find themselves crumbling.
We should not feel ashamed to ask someone for help. If God wanted us to do everything on our own without help from anyone else, He would have created one person and one person alone.
He did not do that. No, He created many. One of the reasons God created so many people was so that we would be able to help one another.
Just as we should not be ashamed to ask someone else for the help that we need, we should also not be afraid to reach out to others in their need. We know what it is like to try to carry a burden ourselves and we know the incredible relief we feel when someone steps in and comes to our aid. That, alone, should motivate us to help others.
Think of all the people you admire. Ask yourself why you admire them so. I am willing to bet that, at the top of your list, you admire them because of their willingness to help others and their cheerfulness when doing so.
Never begrudge anyone the help that they need. Who knows when you will be in their position and need help yourself.
And remember, when you cannot find anyone to help shoulder your burden, the Lord is always there asking you to give your burden to Him. You will always have help.
FAITH ACTION: Cheerfully come to the aid of another today without expectation of any return.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A patient complained to his doctor, “I’ve been to three other doctors and none of them agreed with your diagnosis.” The doctor calmly replied, “Just wait until the autopsy, then they’ll see that I was right.”
OUR “NEW” PARKING LOT By the time this bulletin is delivered to the parish, the resealing of our main parking lot should be complete. If not, it will be finished shortly. One of the things you may have noticed is that we have designated a small “island” in our parking lot as handicapped parking. This area is close to the chapel entrance of our church, the entrance that many of our elderly and handicapped parishioners use on a regular basis. They have been asking for more handicapped parking for some time now. Please, if you do not need the convenience of parking closer to the entrance doors, leave these spaces for our parishioners who do need it. Work will begin soon on our new parking area. You will be able to park there if there are not any open spaces close at hand and walk to the church. If you have the ability to walk without significant effort, park away from the entrance and give your fellow parishioners who need a close space a chance to park.
ON RETREAT I will be on retreat this week, making my way down to St. Meinrad Archabbey Guesthouse after the 8:00 a.m. Mass this morning. I will be returning to the parish Friday evening. Rest assured that I will be keeping all of you in my prayers!
