THE RECORD January 2018 VOLUME 57

Before we jump into 2018, there are a few things that need to be said about 2017.

> Pastor Bruce (& Gwen) retired after almost 18 years of ministry at Our Redeemer. Christ’s church on earth at Our Redeemer continues to be filled with faithful people who are in the Word and being a part of missions and ministry inside and outside our walls.

> We completed an intergenerational event in November in the form of Operation Christmas Child. 101 boxes were packed by young and old together. UPDATE: We tracked our shoe boxes and learned that some went to Namibia (in southern Africa), and some went to “a hard to reach area”. According to the OCC website, “For the safety of ministry partners and local believers…we cannot disclose the name of these countries”.

> Thank You to all who gave Christmas gifts to the church staff as a whole, and individually. It is a joy to serve the Lord with you.

A new year is often seen as a time to start fresh; to try something new, to set goals, to do better than the previous year. I challenge you to apply this to your relationship with Jesus as well. Whether that be as a couple, family, or individual, find five minutes (or more!) a day to spend with Jesus. Daily is ideal, but set a realistic goal for your family – maybe twice a week at first, then increasing as the year goes on. Below is a list of ideas for you to choose from – but don’t be limited by my list.

• “My Devotions” – quarterly devotion book for grades 2-8. These are placed in church mailboxes – extras are available in the resource rack.

• “Happy Times” – bi-monthly devotion book for age 3-grade 1. This is a 25-page booklet with stories, prayers, activities, and songs. These are also placed in church mailboxes.

• “Portals of Prayer” – quarterly, daily devotion book for adults. It can be found in the resource rack. • “God Talk at Home” sheets. These are sent home with our Sunday School children (through grade 3) every

week. There is an overview of what was learned and discussion ideas for families. • “Parent Cue” app. This app, developed by the rethink Group, is for families with children of any age. Based

on the age of your children, it gives practical things to read, do, or say to help you engage with the heart of your children every week. (Note: I do not have personal experience with this app, but have heard great things about it from others.)

• Learn a Bible verse each week. Write down a Bible verse and place it in a prominent location in your home (bathroom mirror, dinner table, car, activity board, etc.) Every time you see it, recite it. Encourage your children who can read to do the same thing. For children who cannot yet read, practice it in the car, meal times, and at bedtime prayers.

• Write the scripture. Pick up a notebook from the store to designate for this. Find a scripture plan and write a few verses every day. I have found that writing scripture makes it stick in my heart and mind better.

• Read a chapter a day. Pick a book of the Bible, and read one chapter every day. I suggest you begin with a book of the New Testament. You can journal in a notebook or write notes in your Bible.

God bless you a lot 😊😊 DCE Emily

Happy New Year 2018!

THE RECORD January 2018 VOLUME 57

MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that while the American food supply is among the safest in the world, there are an estimated 48 million cases of foodborne illness annually—the equivalent of sickening 1 in 6 Americans each year. And each year these illnesses result in an estimated 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. Symptoms of food poisoning include upset stomach, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and dehydration. Symptoms may range from mild to severe. I have posted a chart on the bulletin board by the mailboxes at church with specific information regarding agents that can cause foodborne illness and the specific symptoms a person might have. There is quite a variety and many can be prevented by handling food safely.

Follow These Steps for Food Safety

Clean: Wash your hands before, during and after handling food. Wash utensils, cutting boards, and any surfaces that food touches after each use. Wash fruits and veggies—but not meat, poultry, or eggs. Separate: Use separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw (uncooked) produce and for raw (uncooked) meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. Keep meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from all other

foods while shopping and in the refrigerator. Cook: Only a food thermometer can make sure meat, poultry, fish, and casseroles are cooked to a safe internal temperature. For example, internal temperatures should be 145°F for whole meats (allow the meat to rest after cooking for 3 minutes) and fish, 160°F for ground meats, and 165°F for all poultry. Eggs should be cooked until the yolk is firm. Chill: Use appliance thermometers to be sure your refrigerator is at or below 40ºF and your freezer is 0ºF or below. Between 40ºF and 140ºF is the Danger Zone, when bacteria can multiply rapidly. Generally, the more bacteria, the more likely someone will get sick. Most refrigerators have just a colder/ warmer adjustment, so the only way to know is to put a thermometer inside. Serving buffets: Remember the 2-hour rule: Discard any perishables left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours unless you are keeping it hot or cold (if the buffet is held in a place where the temperature is above 90 degrees F, the 2-hour rule is reduced to 1 hour).

For more information about food safety, call FDA's Food Information Line at: 1-888-SAFEFOOD. More information about preventing foodborne illness is posted on the bulletin board by the mailboxes at church. Please contact me with any questions.

From the CCC Director Angela Wheeler…

Happy New Year! The CCC prays that God blesses you and your family this year.

We are settling down from the festivities of the holidays and the kids are excited to play out in the snow and learn new concepts. The teachers are ready to continue to discover the world through their children, each day we learn something new alongside the children. It is awe inspiring to learn about the world through the child’s eyes.

Some items that we are looking to have donated:

• Plastic grocery bags • Kleenex • Hand Sanitizer • New Spray Bottles • Clorox Wipes

Times and Talents:

• We are looking for someone who has awesome knowledge of technology and social media. If you are willing to donate your time and talent, please let Angela know.

Thank you always for your support through prayer, donations and giving of time.

Angela Wheeler, CCC Director

Fundraiser for A Place for Hope -- Sunday, Jan 28, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

What is A Place for Hope? It is a warm, welcoming and safe place for people who need encouragement. It is a place where they can learn coping strategies and where walls of isolation are broken down and a forgiving environment is found. People who come enjoy activities of their choice.

Funds are needed to provide opportunities for members to participate in the community activities such as plays, concerts, zoo visits, and many more. Also, educational opportunities that help in their recovery and wellness journeys. A Place for Hope offers additional support by providing snacks, drinks, and occasional meals at their meeting place. They provide access to food, hygiene items, laundry facilities, and exercise equipment.

Our Redeemer has provided Christmas parties at A Place for Hope the past three years. We invite you to help support this community organization that works to improve mental health of people in our community. Plan “to eat out” Sunday, Jan. 28 beginning at 11:00 AM at Our Redeemer downstairs in the Dining Hall.

DCE Mark Noennig – Gave update on bible studies currently going on and new

bible studies starting in January.

DCE Emily Sagissor – “Christmas A to Z” is the Sunday School Christmas

Business/Facilities Manager — Jerilyn Kazeck

o Been busy with Open Enrollment, budgets and facilities – heating issues

and van had a flat tire.

o Custodian changes happened in November. The new custodian is from

Preference Personnel and we get a 20% discount from them because

the church is a non-profit.

o Jerilyn is currently working from the Sr Pastor’s office – quieter, less

distracting, more privacy for working with employees 1:1.

o Strive for 75 is complete. $115,022 was the final amount raised!

o Phone and internet were still being taxed – got the tax removed and

will be paying $70 less per month for service.

o Custodian supplies – $3,033 below budget due to cost savings

o Johnson Pest Control has been canceled. That was $125 a visit.

o Trustees are in desperate need of more members. There are three

members who have terms that are up and will be done.

o Good October (financially) - $13,000 income. November is at a $2,000

CCC Director — Angela Wheeler – CCC is at 83% capacity which is down from

the 92% that was expected. They took more school age kids during the summer

of 2016 which burnt out staff. This past summer, they had budgeted for the

same number (45) but only took 30. This had a much bigger impact on the

financials than Angela had anticipated. School boundaries are changing and that

affects the CCC as well.

5. Any Board Chair who would like to highlight something from their report

6. CALL committee update – Five phone interviews took place. They are now down to three

names. During a January 2018 Bible Study hour they will review the SET's (Self-Evaluation

Tool) on the pastors, but the actual voter's meeting will be after the 10:30 worship service.

7. Elections – M/S/P

a. District Convention Delegate/Alternate – Gary Euren

b. Council member – 3 year term – Ron Heiraas

c. Congregational secretary – 3 year term – Carrie Wuollett

8. Budget – M/S/P to accept the 2018 budget

9. Announcements

• Al Ziegler – Reminded everyone that we really need individuals to join the

Trustees. Lots of work to be done and help needed.

o Gary Euren reminded everyone that there are no term limits exist for

boards and committees.

10. Adjournment/Closing Prayer – Mark Noennig

Who is the Worklist? YOU are an essential part of the work list. Every member is assigned to one month throughout the year. What does the worklist do? The people on the monthly list are responsible to help serve or bring food for events such as potluck meals, dollar dinners and funerals. Two co-chair are needed to direct the work of monthly groups. Please pray about using your gifts to serve in this manner. For questions or to help call Carole Borchers 218-287-8049, Gina Strand 218-236-6743 or the church office. Thank You to those who have faithfully served over the years.

Quilting will start Wed January 10th at 1:00 PM in the Dining Hall. Please come and give it a try. We have been given many quilt tops to tie and a lot of new fabric. We are looking forward to a great year and we would love to have many new quilters join us. Questions contact Sonja Beltz 218-236-1876. Thank You!
