Youth For the month of October, the Republic County Jr./Sr. High School Student of the Month nomination was awarded to senior Lucas Nutsch. He is the son of Mike and Robin Nutsch. Nutsch is Student Council President this year. He is also involved in BAG, band, choir, FBLA, FCA, NHS, Jazz Band, Show Choir and the play productions. In addition to being involved in several organizations, Lucas also participates in basket-ball, track, and helps with the volleyball team as their manager. Outside of school ac-tivities, he enjoys cooking, acting, speaking, traveling, helping others, being a life-guard, and anything to do with medicine and sports. Nutsch says he likes the atmosphere of RCJSHS. He also appreciates how every-one, faculty and students, are energetic about almost everything. The Student of the Month for the junior high was

Nineteen Greenhands from Republic County High School went to the Green-hand Conference in Chap-man on September 19. Five medaled on the Greenhand information test. This is the first activity for first year members, which informs the new members about the many opportuni-ties the FFA has to offer. Several workshops were conducted by the district FFA officers, along with a state officer. This year the National FFA President Ryan Best from New Mexi-co was the keynote speaker. Those from Republic Coun-ty medaling were Lanesa Aurand who tied for high individual, Cameron Wilber, Kale Johnson and Tyler Popelka. District horse judging was held in Manhattan on September 21. The Green-

hand team placed third overall. Connor Strutt placed second in the Green-hand division individually. Others participating on the team were Courtney Ander-son, Lane Shoemaker, and Daniel Meyers competed in the advanced division. The contest consisted of three halter classes and three performance classes as well a written exam and one set of oral reasons. The North Central Dis-trict land judging contest was held September 26 at Mankato. Nineteen stu-dents competed from Re-public County, 12 advanced students and seven Green-hands. Those who attended were, Nick Baxa, Eric Dusek, Jeff Hadachek, Marty Burger, Zach Brzon, Drew Hoops, Waylon Sheets, Micayla Pachta, Hughstin Pachta,

Kyle Strutt, Tyler Kasl, and Brandon Zenger. The Greenhands who at-tended were, Joni Sheets, Kali Valek, Cameron Wilber, Lane Shoemaker, Tristan Sis, Guy Filinger. Zach Brzon and Micayla Pachta tied for third place, Tyler Kasl was fifth, and Pachta was fifth. Joni Sheets was high individual in the Greenhand division. The advanced team finished second, four points behind Clay Cen-ter, The Greenhand team also placed second behind Washington County. The contest consists of six different sites to be evalu-ated for crop, pasture, or homesite considerations. The land judging team will compete in the state contest this week.

The 80th Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) added to the event’s his-tory with a 25-year high in livestock numbers and stiff competition for auction pre-miums and scholarships. The show took place Sep-tember 21-24 in Wichita. A total of 704 Kansas youth exhibited 1,453 head of livestock. The show is sponsored by the Kansas Livestock As-sociation, Kansas State Uni-versity and the Agri-Busi-ness Council of Wichita. Champion senior cattle showman was Hadley Schotte, Marysville, with Casey Jensen, Courtland, earning reserve. Gabryelle Gilliam of Washington earned reserve champion hog showman. Prior to the Auction of Champions, KJLS presented a record $23,000 in schol-arships to 13 exhibitors. Teams from 10 states competed in the Mid Amer-ica Classic Judging Contest held at KJLS. The senior college contest was won by Kansas State University, while second place was Texas A&M University. In the sophomore divi-sion of the junior college

Dowsing or witching has long been an accepted method of finding waterin the earth. The same dowsing method is used in finding unmarkedgraves. averaged 640 pounds, sold for $1.60.

“The calf price is actu-ally pretty good right now,” Justin Trost said. “There is a lot of risk if corn goes higher and the price of feeder cattle goes down.”

Premium Feeders man-ager Bob Craig said the high grain prices will af-fect the way feed yards do business, but he said there is more bunk space than cattle in feed yards across the southwest, including Texas, which he thought would keep prices high for the near future.

“There is vicious com-petition to fill those empty pens,” he said.

Trost said the Septem-ber rains gave the pastures more life for fall, and many producers' concerns about feed for the immediate fu-ture has faded.

“I've done more straw than usual, and I've done lots of CRP,” he said. “And we'll graze the cows on corn and milo stalks this winter.”

Trost said cattle pro-ducers are using forages in ways they haven't for sev-eral years.

“There are a lot of people who baled wheat straw,” he said. “And they are going to be baling corn and milo stalks. Years ago they made use of that, but for a long time people haven't been taking advantage of it. They are this year.”

“There's a huge number of straw bales that were put up this year, and people are ammoniating it,” Whitney said. “Ammoniated straw is not the same as grass hay, but it will feed cattle.”

In addition to lighter hay yields because of the drought, Whitney said many

producers lost a cutting of alfalfa this year because of the alfalfa weevil, which will make hay supplies that much shorter.”

“Some people will take advantage of grazing wheat to help with feed sources,” Whitney said.

Both Kort and Whitney said they thought most weaning weights on calves were up this year compared with last year.

“Part of it is because cattle were supplemented with protein and energy tubs,” Whitney said. “But the shorter grass we've had this year because it's been dry is actually more nutrient-dense. The stressed plants didn't have as much growth, but they had better quality, and that has probably kept on gains. The cows even look in good condition.”

Kort said most of the weaning weights he has heard of have been higher this year, and he contribut-ed that to the more nutri-ent-dense grass as well.

Kort said areas farther west have experienced more drought than Republic County and are seeing more livestock liquidation. He said he has seen that first-hand with the sheep and goat industry.

Belleville 81 Livestock had its monthly sheep and goat sale last Saturday and were expecting about 700 head.

“We had 1,200 head, and we aren't equipped for a run like that,” Kort said.

He said many of the sheep and goats came to Belleville from western Kansas.

“We had 70 goats from Wyoming,” he said. “The guy watched our sales on the internet and brought

a trailer load. He is going to bring 200 goats next month.”

Kort said the drought and high hay prices will put many sheep and goat pro-ducers out of business.

Premium Feeders man-ager Bob Craig said the drought means it will cost cattle feeders more to fatten cattle.

“The input costs are greater for sure,” he said. “It will cost more for a pound of gain.”

Craig said the fear of grain prices going even higher this winter concerns him every day. He said there are many feedlots that have lost millions of dollars this past summer.

“Cattle bought this spring were high, and there were lots of corn acres planted, so the future looked good,” he said. “But if you didn't buy up corn early, you got hit hard. There were some awful big losses through the summer, and even now, by some of these yards.”

Craig said Premium Feed-ers raises its own hay but buys all the grain locally.

“We are growing the cattle longer because of the high grain,” Craig said. “Before we would take a 650-pound animal and put it onto a finish ration right away. Now we'll grow it on a high roughage ration to 850 or 900 pounds and then switch it to the finish ration.”

Craig said the drought will also impact beef mar-kets because a large num-bers of cows have been taken out of production.

“The affects of this drought are going to impact the cattle industry for years to come,” he said.

Murdock said the site would be located at 304 N Cedar in Concordia, near the old Circle B eleva-tor in north Concordia. A traditional recycling cen-ter is also located at that site, where some Republic County residents are al-ready bringing in items on their own.

“I need to know if you’re interested in participat-ing in order to apply for the grant,” he said. “Your county residents would be able to bring stuff down to us. We wouldn’t do collections--it would just be a free-will bring-in deal,” he said.

State law prohibits charging a collection fee to individuals who bring items to the HHW site, he said, for fear of discouraging private individuals from prop-erly disposing of the HHW. Businesses can be charged per pound for the material they bring, and are limited on how much material they can bring to the site, Mur-dock said.

“This isn’t to make mon-ey,” Murdock said. “The biggest cost is in shipping items to the right processor or disposal facility.”
