UN GIORNO ARRIVERO

SILVANAMOSSANO

A century of Italian history retold through an intimate, universalfamily saga. Mossano is the new Sveva Casati Modignani

For Anita, America (that she pronounces ‘la Merica’) means dream, hope, and sorrow. Sorrow because her sister Irene migrated to Americanever to return; it is hope because she wants to go there too, to start anew and better life, far from the hardship of a peasant’s life and the dif-ficult years between the two World Wars; finally, it is a dream becauseevery year that goes by seems to push la Merica further away from Anita. However, Anita is not going to give up: she lives her life waiting for thatmoment when she will get to the dock, embark on the ship and cross thevastness of the ocean.History walks side by side with the novel’s characters; it touches themand turns their life upside down.

«At last an emotional, dramatic account of a time when we werethe ones emigrating to, and dreaming of, America».

BAMBINI ALL’INFERNO

CECILIAGENTILE

A report dedicated to those who suffer the violence and in-humanity of war. What it means to be a child in Gaza: forced to live in the middle ofa conflict, innocent children suffer more than anyone else.

A corridor is suspended in the middle of nowhere, running through adesolate, abandoned land, under constant observation by the Israeli sol-diers. This is what the last kilometer before getting into the Gaza Stripthrough the Erez Crossing looks like. The author covered that distancealone. Once on the other side, what she came across were Hamasmen, verses from the Quran and shabby-looking taxis that drive youaway from the border, but also heaps of rubble, and children who weredigging into them with their bare hands, hoping to find some rubble thatcould be used again. The book is the result of the encounter betweenthese children and the author, who entered their life, allowed them tospeak and to tell their story. It is a shocking investigation on the dramaticsituation in which the children of the Gaza Strip and the other OccupiedPalestinian Territories are forced to live. Entitled, just like anybody else, toinalienable human rights, these children are the innocent victims of vio-lence and war.

Cecilia Gentile is a journalist for the daily la Repubblica. She writes onsocial and environmental issues, immigration and childhood. She used tobe a high school teacher, an experience that gave her a high sensitivitytowards children and teenagers. UN PO’ DI TUTTO

IDAVISOCCHI

Eight notebooks are found in an attic quite by chance by a grand-daughter, just like in a novel

The notebooks are scrupulously written in neat and elegant handwritingand explain everything a young woman should know when contemplat-ing marriage. Or at least a young woman in the 1940s.

The notebooks are what Ida Visocchi, a brave and loving Neapolitan mo-ther who lived in the early part of the 20th century, gave to her daugh-ters as a wedding gift, in a period in which tradition played an importantrole in people’s lives. The gift to her daughters was to help them over-come their doubts and satisfy their curiosity on the eve of their marriage.

Ida Visocchi was the second of nine children. She spent her childhoodin boarding school; afterwards she married and had five children. Idawas a fighter: during World War II she used to go to the black marketby herself to buy milk and flour for her family. At one point she evenhad a hole dug in her garden to hide some political refugees. She wasa generous woman with impeccable good taste; despite dedicatingher life to her family, she was also a very talented business woman.
