RodrigoMelladefendedhisthesisentitled“EvoluciónjurisprudencialdeldelitodemaltratoocrueldadanimalenChile”.ThisworkinvestigatedthecrueltytoanimalsinChilefocussingonthe legal framework, the doctrine and the decisions of judges. In this regard, Mr. Mellaanalysedsixrelevantlawcasesthatshowtheevolutionofthereasoningrelatedtothejudicialtreatmentofthiscrime.GeorginaCasas defendedher thesis entitled “ El fois gras un alimento controvertido.”Ms.Casas researched theproductionof fois gras. Since ingrowingducksor geesemake it, thewelfareoftheseanimalsisanissue.Thisworkisboththeoreticalandpractical.Ononehand,ithighlightsthehistory,thecharacteristicsofthisproductandthelegalrulesatinternationaland national level. On the other hand, it analyses the experience of a local industry thatintroducedinnovationsinthefeedingprocesstoprotectthewelfareofanimals,aswellastheresultsofasurveyabouttheawarenessofconsumerstowardthisproduct.IvanMartindefendedhisthesisentitled“AnimalWelfareRegulations.CaseStudyofWhaleWatchingTourism in thePelagos Sanctuary.”Whalewatching should reduce its impact intermsofsustainabilityandanimalwelfare.Thisworkinvestigatestheregulationsguidelinespertaining to the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean Sea, evaluates them with the

Estudio comparado entreFranciayEspaña.”Thegreyhoundsoftensufferanatrociousfate.Consideredbothpetsandthings,theyareutilisedforcompetitionsandhuntingforashortperiodoftime.Then,itcouldhappen that the owners abandon or kill them. This study compares the condition ofgreyhounds inFranceandSpain,andproposes some ideas to improve the legal rules thatshouldprotectthem.

Iris van Maarschalkerwaart defended her thesis entitled “Social progress and animalprotection”.Thisstudyinvestigatestheconnectionbetweeneconomicgrowth,socialprogressandanimalwelfareprotection.Tocarryoutthisresearch,Ms.vanMaarschalkerwaartanalyseddifferent indicators related to eleven European countries. The results show that theimprovementofanimalwelfarecanalsovarydependingontheconsiderationforfarmingorcompanionanimals.
